Click Editorial Board Executive Committee 2016
How time flies! It seems like yesterday
that I took over the role as editor of
Click. The journey has been a good
one and along the way I received
constant encouragement from the
Committee and my friends. During
this period I made many new friends
both locally and abroad; some sharing
their knowledge with me regarding the design of the
magazine others contributing with articles, images and
statistics and proof-reading. Now it is time for me to move
on and sadly this will be my last issue of Click as editor. If
there is anyone of you who can dedicate some time and
take over this role, please step forward and contact any
Committee member or myself. I take this opportunity to
thank everyone for their continued support.
It is being acknowledged that today people are taking
more pictures than ever before. This is due to the fact that
practically any gadget in use has an inbuilt camera. The
sad part is that few of these pictures are being printed
and most of these digital images are being lost. Some are
purposely deleted to make space for new images on their
storage devices while others are lost due to corruption
of data. It is important to leave some tangible record of
our work which will be part of our history in the years to
come. Also for this reason it is important to keep Click in
print format as this will be part of the Society’s heritage.
As usual, we have some interesting articles and images
for you to enjoy.

In June of this year it would be 55 years since
the Society was set up; in fact it has already
been five years since we were celebrating our
50th Anniversary. The book which the Society
produced to celebrate the occasion has been
distributed to all Club Members, various entities,
as well as special guests who were present at our
activities or visited our club premises.
I am sure that all photographers like to have
their photography published and when we
were working on this book we had asked the
members to submit a photo from their archives
as well as a personal profile so that we would
include them. This was a great opportunity to
give Club members exposure of their work and
there was also an overview of the history of
the Society since its inception with a highlight
on photography in Malta. The Society also
helps members on this issue through the
“Click” Newsletter and the yearly catalogue
of the annual National competition. As a
photographic Society it is important for us to
have more periodicals highlighting the recent
photographic trends and top photos emanating
in Malta from our Society.
While on the subject of publishing, regrettably
we have been given notice by Noel Portelli that
he will be relinquishing the post of editor of the
Society’s quarterly issue of “Click”. On behalf of
the executive committee I would like to thank
Noel for the first-rate job he has done since
he took over this rather important task, and it
goes without saying that his contribution and
input will be greatly missed. The newsletter
‘CLICK’ has been the Society’s voice and it served
as a window of exposure for our members’

photography for a good number of years. Due
to this recently developed situation we are
looking for another member who would be
kind enough to take over the editorial duties
so that there would not be a break in process
of such an important service offered by the
Society.
This particular issue will take us to August and
past the half way mark of this year. During
May and June we will continue with the
internal club competitions and there are a few
interesting talks and/or presentations lined
up for you. Our usual summer social event for
members is set for the 14th July and after that
we will be closed for the summer and open
again on the 1st of September. In August we
are aiming to celebrate World Photography
Day as we have done for the last few years.
More information will be forthcoming in the
near future.

Best Assignment in the Starting Photography Course
When I purchased my first DSLR camera,
a friend of mine invited me to join the
photographic society. It happened that at
that time a Starting Photography Course
was going to be held so I applied and
joined in. The course was very interesting
and helped me to brush up some techniques and I was able to use the
camera to its full potential. The lectures were held in a professional way,
where every tutor explained to us in a way that everyone was able to
understand. I found it enjoyable and fun, especially the workshops that
were held on Saturday mornings where we would meet up for a photo
shoot. The course was beneficial to me and I recommend it to anyone
who wants to improve in photography. I know that the society organizes
various other advanced courses, which I am eager to take part in the near
future.
I am so glad I took this course as I have learnt what I need to do with various
settings that the camera has and create better photographs. Looking back
through my old photographs I can now spot how I could have improved
the end result to produce a more professional photograph.

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR
Getting to know you......
STANDINGS AS AT 16TH APRIL 2016
Imagine you have been chosen to take part in a photographic
reality show where you can be sent to any location of your
choice in the world. Which location would you choose and why?
I would definitely choose Cuba, the largest of the islands in the
Caribbean Sea, surrounded by many small islands. The place, till now,
is still stuck in an era where you can see old cars still running perfectly
all over the place, children playing in the streets and old ladies
smoking cigars on their door step. One thing that is noticeable is the
street art, which one can find literally everywhere. But it’s not only art
that Cubans use to express themselves. They use clothes, music, and
dance. I believe that Cuba offers a good photographic opportunity
that few places in the world can still offer. It would be a pity should this
magnificent place evolve and thus changing the way their life is or has
been in the past years. There is still unspoiled territory of which swamps
bursting with wildlife, rain forests and cloud forests, grasslands and
lagoons. 22 percent of Cuba’s land is under some form of protection.
Johann Debono FMPS, AFIAP, Dip.Photo.
My choice would be London since, from past experience, it has
a certain fascination over me and there are a myriad subjects to
photograph. It is a happening City and there is always something
to attract my photographic taste buds. Since I love rock music
and theatre London is a great place for me. Its urban environment
presents some great opportunities for Street Photography too.

Questions by Emanuel Cauchi:
I would like to ask about the sky, how do you get that effect in the clouds and how do
you bring out the shadows? It would also be helpful if you explain your work flow.
Kerstin Arnemann
Biography & Interview
For Kerstin the best way of expressing herself is photography.
One of her specializations is Fine Art, Monochrome, Time
Exposure, “Architectural Street Photography” and Landscape.
The medium enables her to express her own personal vision
and to recreate, in her images, a world according to her
personal imagination and interpretation. She avoids showing
the viewer a simple game of patterns and lines, but tries to
reach the hidden soul of the structure. Meanwhile, in what
she terms “Architectural Street Photography,” she combines two subjects of equal
importance: the presence of people is intended to reveal the architectural object.
Kerstin presents intriguing architectural images with a view of reaching an inventive
understanding of the very essence of architectonic structures or compositions. Her
main aim is to create images that provoke emotion and concurrently stimulate the
mind of the viewer. International Award-Winning B&W Fine Art photographer,
with high distinctions in some of the most important photography competitions
worldwide: Black & White Spider Awards, MIFA (Moscow International Foto Awards),
IPA (International Photography Awards), PX3 France, Monochrome Awards, ND
Awards, Fine Art Photography Awards. Her photographic work featured in the
prestigious Black & White Magazine (USA), Photography Week (UK), and Camerapixo
and in the top local media. Kerstin’s photographic work has been exhibited on an
international level: Malta, Athens, Germany Oregon (Portland) and others.
Question by Rik van Colen
Which artists inspire you (photographers and others)?
Preferred painters: Canaletto, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Albrecht Duerer,
Francesco Di Giorgio Martini etc….. Architects: Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, Richard
Meier, Santiago Calatrava, Renzo Piano, Zaha Hadid, Cesar Pelli, Le Corbusier etc….
Photographers: Michael Kenna, Alexey Titarenko, Julius Shulman, Henri Cartier
Bresson,….

For my long exposure images I use Firecrest ND Filters by Formatt-Hitech, mainly the 4
ND filter. By using filters I have the possibility to keep the shutter open for a long time
and be able to catch the movement of the clouds, which in the final image result in the
streak of clouds.
My post processing is not a very logical or organized process, but I follow mainly my
intuition and vision for the final image. After some initial adjustments in Lightroom 5, I
upload the image in Photoshop 6 and convert the image into black and white and start
using the digital brush with dodge and burn to enhance the light where necessary
and darken the less important parts to give the image a more 3D feeling. I keep my
post processing workflow simple in order to be creative. In Photoshop I use mainly the
following tools: Dodge & Burn, Curves, Masks, Selection tool and Gradients. It is all I
need to create the image according to my vision.
I think every photographer needs to find his own workflow and his own way,
experimenting by her/himself, in order to feel comfortable. This can be done very
easily: by experimenting, through attending lectures in photography, enrolling in
Photoshop courses. By becoming more and more confident with the different functions
in Photoshop, you will be able to decide which workflow is the most convenient for
you, and make it yours.
Questions by Doreen Gauci
I would like to ask for some tips in achieving great photographic lighting such as yours...
which is the best ideal lens to shoot architecture? Have you ever attended art school?..
There’s no question that your work is out of the ordinary and truly fine art.
Best time for excellent lighting conditions, as we all know, are the golden hours.
However manipulating my images via the previously explained post processing, I
create the lighting in post processing according to my vision.
I have never attended an art school, but I was always very interested in art, especially
paintings. From a very young age, I visited a lot of exhibitions, and studied the
composition and lighting in the paintings. However in 2014 I attended an online study
course related to photography and art, a perfect combination for me, which gave
my photography a big push. I attended this online course to improve my personal
photography and I studied in depth photography in general, paintings, composition,
vision etc.

Travel Photography
by Alexandra Schembri
Hi!
My name is Alexandra: a nurse, an
enthusiast photographer and a keen traveller
at heart. Ever since I was a kid I’ve always had
a love for travel and adventure, however, little
did I know that by time this passion will flourish
to the extent that it becomes an addiction to
travel the world...
The travel bug bit me hard when I took the first plane to Germany
in 1984 and since then my life became a home to a collection
of the world’s best experiences and destinations. Most of all
travel has created a solid platform for personal growth, global
understanding and eventually a foundation for my love affair
with another hobby - photography. Soon I tied the knot between
the two.
Travel photography has since then helped me to take a step
back and breathe in the world, rather than charging ahead and
missing it all. Capturing intimate or precious moments in time,
portraying the subjects in different perspectives, recording the
vibrancy of colours and playing with light...it is simply amazing!
It also has become my passport to meeting people, learning and
experiencing new cultures. Bearing in mind that preparation
prior travelling is of utmost importance some of the rules that I
consider do include:
•
Researching the destination – Waste of time is a waste of
money, energy & opportunities so I do plan very well. Whether I
am travelling for a week or a month I always have at hand a day
to day itinerary with timings and places of interest to visit.
•
Photographic Equipment – Be familiar with your camera
and the rest of equipment. Also, serious travel photography
entails finding the right balance between having the required
equipment in your bag when you need it, and having to carry
it all. It can be quite disappointing if you realize that you have
forgot your tripod back home when you mostly need it, but your
holiday will be equally ruined if you are so loaded that travelling
from place to place becomes almost impossible and certainly
unenjoyable.
•
Shooting & Gaining acceptance – Once you are all geared
12
Click
up, it is now time to take
the road and start enjoying
yourself. You will surely find
a photographic opportunity in
every step you’ll make! Yet,
the magic really begins when
you stay in a place and give
yourself time to gain insight
and understanding. It requires
Modern Architecture - Baku Azerbaijan
The Homeless - Varanasi India
The Painting - Hanoi - Vietnam
tremendous persistence and
patience, but I would rather
spend more time in one place
than try to see it all. Timing
is important, avoid harsh light
and look out for that golden
hour.
Wake up early when
streets are empty from regular
folks and slowly watch the
streets filling up with life. Be respectful and polite especially
when photographing people by gently approaching them
and ask for permission. I find it much easier to connect with
people prior requesting permission, whether it’s simply a nod
of acknowledgement, a greeting, an explanation of what you’re
doing, or a long involved conversation.
In conclusion to this, I do suggest enjoying the overall experience
in bringing back powerful images whilst allowing your camera to
be an opportunity to serve as an extension to your heart rather
solely to your eyes...

Questions by Charlot Scicluna
I would like to ask about the equipment you use, your favourite editing
software, future equipment shopping list and any shooting locations on
your bucket list.
My main equipment which until today serves me very well and is still my
preferred equipment:
Camera Canon 550 D
Sigma Lens 10-20mm f/4-5.6
Canon Lens EF 28-70mm f/2.8L for portraiture
Firecrest ND Filters by Formatt-Hitech
Remote control
Steady tripod, brand Manfrotto
Last year I decided to add a Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L to my equipment.
Future shopping list: I decided to add a Fuji X100T, a small handy and
silent camera to my equipment, to build up more my street photography
project, as I noticed that a DSLR scares people and I often loose” the
decisive moment”. The reason why I chose a Fuji X100T with a fixed lens
is very simple; it will be a camera, exclusively dedicated to my scouting
visits to locations. The second very important aspect is the fixed lens of 23
mm which will help me to improve my composition and it will be a further
learning curve.
There are many shooting locations on my bucket list  one of them is
Berlin, Germany. I visited Berlin once on a school trip thirty-five years ago,
and I would love to see how it has changed since then. There are many
other cities I visited in the past, when I was not yet so passionate about
architecture photography, and I would like to go back to express the
beauty of the buildings I still have in my mind, through my images.
I would like to conclude this interview with a statement, which I hope will
be of help as well for other fellow photographers.
Keep your inspiration alive by activities aside from photography. I love
going for long walks in remote places, reading, diving, and socializing with
other people. These activities keep me alive and relax my mind so I feel more
open to new ideas. I feel that working on a photographic series instead of
isolated images is an effective way to generate creativity. A series helps
14
Click
me to improve artistically, it gives me the ability to express myself in
a more effective way – it is my visual language of telling a story. My
aim is creating images that stay with me and fulfill my personal vision
instead of creating only popular images. I feel very happy when people
understand the story behind the image, which is the most rewarding
aspect for me, when publishing or exhibiting my images.
