of a farmer who intends future generations
of their family to be the beneficiaries.

Establishing a plan for how the farm is to be run, the
distribution of the assets, and who is to benefit, requires
the security of a succession plan. Failure to opt for the
guidance and certainty of a well-considered succession
plan leaves the farmer’s business and assets vulnerable
to liquidation to settle the estate if no agreement as to the
management of the farm can be reached by feuding family
members.
The complexity of having to cater for the differing interests,
values and objectives of the successors has led to farmers
putting off planning for their future. Observations of farmers
have highlighted that little discussion has been occurring
between the older and younger generations as to how to
plan for the future management of the farm business.
