Armed with PFSBers manning the golf carts, registration tables, and dinner setup (not to ignore the Bell Tower constructed of cheese), the France A. Córdova Recreational Center was transformed into a ballroom for one of the largest and most talked about events at Purdue. From live violinists and stage actors to Purdue Musical Organizations and a live band, the night was nothing short of entertaining. After much anticipation, President Daniels took the stage and, in front of nearly 900 in attendance, announced Ever True: The Campaign for Purdue University. Ever True seeks to raise $2.019 billion by the middle of 2019, celebrating the 150th anniversary of Purdue University. This money will go towards a variety of areas, headlined to “Place students first, build on our strengths, and champion research and innovation.” As a student who has been fortunate to call this place home, it’s such a blessing to experience the energy and excitement that surrounds the shaping of Purdue’s future and the worldwide impact it will continue to make. 1 EVER TRUE THANK YOU ALYSSA BEGLE As a component to Stewardship, the Purdue Foundation Student Board members met to individually write thank you notes to President’s Council members present at the Ever True Campaign Dinner. Each attendee was written a note from a member of the board to thank them for their time and their continued support to students and the University. The PFSB members were able to witness the event and share their gratitude for all those donors in attendance do for Purdue. EVER GRATEFUL TYLER BERRY On October 28th at both Armstrong Hall and Krach Leadership Center, PFSB assisted the development office in hosting an outreach event to students to let them know about the Ever True Campaign. There was free coffee and T-shirts for students who participated in the event. Students would write notes of gratitude on Ever Grateful postcards that were later sent to Purdue donors. Students also signed a large Ever Grateful banner; it was great to see it filled with so many grateful students. Students liked learning about what the campaign was, how it pertained to them and how donors to Purdue played such a crucial role in their education. Check out PFSB members, Kayla Bacon and Trevor Lear’s video capturing the event: https://vimeo.com/144787118. PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL ANNUAL WEEKEND IN NAPLES ALYSSA BEGLE EVER TRUE STUDENT EVENT TYLER BERRY The week following President Mitch Daniels’ campaign announcement PFSB set out on Memorial Mall with buttons, chocolate, and informational flyers for students regarding the Campaign. On the mall there was also two huge picture frames where students would write what they would donate to if they had $250 to give back to Purdue. It was a great experience to get students thinking of how private gifts affect them and the things they are involved in. On the weekend of February 13th and 14th, five Purdue Foundation Student Board students traveled to Naples, Florida to attend events with the President’s Council. These students helped prepare events, take photos, interact with alumni, and serve as student ambassadors on behalf of Purdue. The students assisted with events such as the Welcome Reception, the Women at Purdue event, the Back to Class sessions, the Annual Dinner, the Engineering Breakfast, and more. The students had a wonderful time assisting the development office and learning from prestigious alumni. The students were also able to serve a speaking role during the Saturday night Ever True dinner. Alumni gained insight to Purdue Foundation Student Board’s efforts on educating students about philanthropy and private giving. Our hope is that the interactions we had with the alumni and donors that weekend, left them feeling proud of the work we are doing as student ambassadors on campus 2 PFSB shares PURDUE PRIDE BACK TO CLASS JACOB TEBBE October 9th was a date buzzing with events as the President’s Council marked its 43rd year in existence. The President’s Council event “Back to Class” kicked off the day bright and early. Excitement was buzzing in the air as Boilermaker alumni were reunited and connected once again by their alma mater. There were a series of “classes” that provided updates on current Purdue programs and how Boilermakers are innovating for the future. PFSB members manned the registration, helped ensure smooth turnover between classes, and ultimately provide proper Boilermaker hospitality to our returning alumni. Lucky PFSBers who were able to attend the luncheon got the opportunity to meet a couple of the Purdue Astronauts and hear their tales of adventure. I had the opportunity of working the first shift of registration and to my surprise another Tebbe had registered for the day’s activities. The much anticipated, Stanley G. Tebbe, arrived in the early morning and I met my long lost distant uncle! Both of my parents attended the school of which we shall not speak of, so it was great to hear that there is some black and gold high up within my family tree. I always knew there was Black and Gold in my blood and Stan Tebbe helped me find it. PURDUE VS. IU TAILGATE TYLER BERRY The President’s Council Purdue vs. IU tailgate was held in the Union ballrooms. Oaken buckets were scattered everywhere and everyone was decked out in their Purdue gear, there was even some ugly crimson sweaters in attendance as well. PFSB member, Ali Johnson, recipient of the President’s Council 40th Anniversary Scholarship, spoke on how her scholarship from the council impacted her academic career, Jessica Huber (a researcher at Purdue) talked about her work to combat Parkinson’s disease, and the Glee Club serenaded the room at the end of the event. The tailgate was a lot of fun; it was also neat to meet the Wilmeth’s of the Wilmeth Active Learning Center and hear what inspired them to donate. HOMECOMING 2015 CLAIRE LEE & DANIEL ROMARY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH On Friday, November 6th, students from the Purdue Foundation Student Board bundled up and walked in the annual Homecoming Parade on campus. With the PFSB banner leading the way, chocolates and information about the Ever True Campaign were distributed to students, alumni, and community members along the parade route. The parade was a wonderful evening to show PFSB’s Boilermaker Pride, promote the Ever True Campaign, and support PFSB members Michael Fouch and Patrick Sullivan and PFSB President and Homecoming Queen, Alyssa Begle in the parade. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7TH One of the most iconic alumni events of the year, homecoming, took place unusually late this year, on November 7th. Colleges and organizations all had tents set up on Stadium Mall to welcome their alumni home. From free food to unique photo-ops, Stadium Mall was alive and buzzing with networking and reunions. PFSB had the opportunity to help set up the event (even driving signs around on golf carts!), and talk with visitors about Ever True: The Campaign for Purdue University from a student’s perspective. It was great to see all of the alumni and their families who came back for homecoming, and even better to know that PFSB helped orchestrate such a fantastic event to keep alumni informed and welcomed. 3 GRISSOM RE-DEDICATION EREN BOZBAG Friday October 9th, Purdue’s School of Industrial Engineering had the privilege of re-dedicating their newly renovated home, Grissom Hall. One of the most iconic features of this building is how the complete renovation of the interior fosters group work, transparency and better learning while the exterior, which was not altered, gives a sense of the great legacy and tradition that this building and Purdue holds. Abhijit Deshmukh, the James J. Holberg Head of Industrial Engineering, along with Purdue President Mitch Daniels, Leah Jamieson the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering and Ransburg Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Sue Ellspermann all addressed the crowd on the patio during the opening ceremony. The ceremony was concluded with the four speakers pulling a series of switches that projected “ReThink IE” on a screen, which has been the slogan of the School of Industrial Engineering for the past few years. As indicated during the ceremony, this renovation was a product of President Daniels’ vision for academic excellence and from what it seems we will be seeing similar events in the upcoming years! RACING TOWARDS INNOVATION AMY BURBRINK On Tuesday, October 20, 2015, the Purdue Foundation Student Board was able to participate in the groundbreaking of a new equine surgical center in Shelbyville, Indiana. The groundbreaking was hosted at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino, which is owned by the surgical center’s title sponsor, Centaur Gaming. During his speech Purdue University President, Mitch Daniels, declared that this new extension of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine will be As a member of PFSB, I was thankful for a great step in making Shelbyville the the opportunity to attend the event and Thoroughbred Capital of Indiana. A simple yet tasteful reception featured student scholarship ambassadors and Purdue Foundation Student Board members, as well as a small band who performed on the second floor of the beautiful atrium. The main event followed in one of Armstrong’s signature lecture halls - Wine Tasting. Stephanie DeMarco of PFSB started off the event with a great speech on the impact giving has on our students, followed by an introduction of Dr. Christian Butzke. Dr. Butzke is a world renowned wine enthusiast and is a part of Purdue’s great faculty. Christian gave a tremendous presentation and led the tasting ceremony. Everyone in attendance loved the presentation and of course enjoyed the wine that accompanied it. As a member of PFSB, I was thankful for the opportunity to attend the event and interact with such influential Boilermakers. “ R.B. STEWART SOCIETY EVENT ” ANIMAL AND LIFE SCIENCES GROUNDBREAKING ALI JOHNSON On November 6th, Purdue trustees honored the two donors for the upcoming Agriculture and Life Sciences buildings. The Hobart and Russell Creighton Hall of Animal Sciences and the Land O’ Lakes Center for Experiential Learning and Purina Pavilion are set to open in 2017. Purdue Foundation Student Board helped unveil the construction plans for the expansion of the College of Agriculture. This expansion will move Purdue forward and further promote research by students, faculty, and staff in the Department of Animal Sciences. President Mitch Daniels thanked each donor for their generosity as well as expressed his excitement for the upcoming facilities. Alongside President Daniels and Purdue Pete, the Creighton family and Land O’ Lakes representatives broke ground on the corner of Harrison and Russell streets. 4 SENIOR SENDOFF CLAIRE LEE Purdue Foundation Student Board took part in congratulating and sending off the graduating seniors at Senior Send Off. This event provided a unique opportunity for PFSB to educate the university’s newest alumni on philanthropy and Ever True: The Campaign for Purdue University. Through cheerful discussion and passing out Ever True buttons PFSB members were able to spread the news on opportunities for private support to Purdue in hopes of encouraging young alums to give back. PFSB CONNECTS WITH CAMPUS THE “WHY GIVE?” INITIATIVE LUCAS BANTER During the third week of February, national philanthropy month, Purdue Foundation Student Board launched a new initiative geared toward educating students about private giving and all that it affords our University. Early on in it’s development we decided the slogan for this initiative should be coined, “students educating students on private giving.” And what a week full of education it was! The “WHY GIVE?” Initiative team hosted several events throughout the week with a new theme tied to each day. Our first day, we handed out cookies that were missing a section (they looked like pac-man cookies). This section reflected 13% which reflects the percentage of private support to the University. Our goal was to help students understand that we need to grow the percentage of private support in order to provide more scholarships, study abroad, and other student related opportunities. For the named professorship day we played musical chairs with students to show the professors that would not be at Purdue without private giving, to share about scholarships we passed out hot chocolate while educating, and we shared the “opportuni-keys” of study abroad and research experience with an interactive game. Gift tags around campus highlighted buildings provided with private giving and on the last day students wrote thank you notes to donors for private giving. The event in its entirety was a huge success. Hearing students across campus talking about the initiative and fun facts about private giving that they learned made me proud to be a PFSB member. Hopefully through our efforts this past week we were able to teach students at Purdue how large of an impact private giving has on them and all of the astounding experiences they wouldn’t have been able to have without it. PURDUE PAY IT FORWARD DANIEL SHYU A new initiative co-chaired by Bridget Maloney and Daniel Shyu, Purdue Pay it Forward, launched in Spring 2016. It was aimed at encouraging Purdue students to get involved in philanthropy by allowing them to donate on behalf of five different people. The donor then sent personalized messages to them, showing how large of an impact other students have made on each other. During the spring semester leading up to Purdue Day of Giving, PFSB members advertised and started the “giving chain” to target different on campus organizations. With the official launch to the student body in April just prior to Purdue Day of Giving, PFSB had three-four on campus days, where Purdue Pay it Forward set up tables at various buildings to encourage on-the-spot giving. The eventual goal was to have 16% of all students Pay it Forward. 5 PURDUE DAY OF GIVING MICHAEL FOUCH Last year, Purdue Day of Giving raised $13.7 million in a day with over 9500 donations, more than ever before for the event. This year, PDOG had a theme of “Bigger and Better,” and the day itself did not disappoint, raising $18,293,665 with 12,872 donations! From the student perspective, there were smaller events going on all day, spearheaded by a large event with various different activities in the Cordova Recreational Center. Headed by PFSB co-chairs Collin Schmid and Michael Fouch, the event expanded further into campus and had a more visible and accessible presence for students this year. By a offering more convenient event locations to Residential students and a variety of different social media challenges to all student organizations, the event, along with the Purdue Pay It Forward Initiative created a sense of connectivity between the University and the student body in appreciation of Purdue. FUN TIMES WITH PFSB PFSB RETREAT PFSB CHRISTMAS PARTY On September 13th, new and returning PFSB members attended a retreat for the afternoon to learn more about Purdue and establish the direction of PFSB for the year. Several Purdue employees from the Development Office spoke to us about the upcoming buildings on campus and how PFSB can help educate the student body about the changes that are taking place. We also went on a scavenger hunt around campus to find various locations, buildings, statues, etc. that were made possible by private support. The clues were definitely not easy to decipher, but we all learned a lot about gifts that donors have made to the university. Overall, the retreat was a great way to kick off the year for PFSB. Members of Purdue Foundation Student Board came together on December 9th before the annual Christmas Party to drive to University Place in West Lafayette, and sing for the residents there. Dressed in Christmas sweaters and reindeer antlers, the students brought their holiday spirit and shared in the warm environment that was provided by the residents, ending with everyone singing “Hail Purdue!”. After the caroling, the Purdue Foundation Student Board met in the Dauch Alumni Center for some games, delicious food, friends, and a few White Elephant gift exchanges. With everyone full and carrying more than enough supplies to get them through finals week, everyone left eager to come back in January and start a new semester of activities and events.
