Plant materials from agricultural producJon, including cellulosics (straw), starches (grains), and oils are potenJal sources for fuels, chemicals, and polymers for industrial and consumer use. •
Dr. Nathan Mosier, in Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) and the Laboratory of Renewable Resources Engineering (LORRE), has research programs focusing on the development of catalysts and catalyJc processes to transform cellulose and plant oils to valuable fuels and chemicals. •
Poten9al graduate students are expected to have a strong background in chemistry, biochemistry, and process engineering with a passion for developing innova9ve approaches to make renewable, plant-‐based products. The water-‐energy-‐food nexus provides a framework to examine the interconnecJon of food producJon with water and energy consumpJon. The research effort will focus on the water conservaJon component of a water-‐energy-‐
food nexus research effort for a locaJon or locaJons in Mexico and locaJons in Indiana. The effort will examine relaJonships between increased food producJon that will require increased irrigaJon and the impacts on energy requirements as well. The project will examine the impacts of a range of water conservaJon pracJces on their ability to reduce water consumpJon for the study sites and the economics of these pracJces. Water conservaJon pracJces that will be examined include irrigaJon pracJces as well. The SWAT model as well as other models will be used to explore the impacts of these pracJces. •

The focus of this project is invesJgaJng new innovaJve technologies and management pracJces that will permit farmers, elevator managers and grain processors to safely and effecJvely manage stored grain in silos without entry (zero entry). The following specific objecJves will be pursued toward this end: 1) Develop a deep grain probe for localized sampling of CO2, temperature and relaJve humidity in bulk grain. 2) Improve on current CO2 monitoring technology by using the probe in ObjecJve 1 to quanJfy and differenJate biological acJvity in a stored grain mass due to grain respiraJon, fungi, and/or insect pests acJviJes. 3) Develop an expert management system with real-‐Jme grain quality tracking for improved management of large grain stocks in bins. Students aCached to faculty lead of this project will be involved in research towards sensors development, tesJng and modeling related to bulk storage of grain. •
