Dear Temple Avodah Families,
Temple Avodah PTO is a volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the Religious School experience for our children
and their families. Annually, we participate in holidays with apples and honey at Rosh Hashanah, glow sticks at Yom
Kippur, Sukkah decorating and celebration, Chanukah and Purim parties for the children and Passover seders in the
classroom. We also participate in various mitzvah projects throughout the year to help teach our children and youth the
importance of giving back to their community.
When you join PTO, you help to support these events and others throughout the year. Family membership dues are only
$18 per year. Whether or not you have children in the Religious School, please complete the form below and enclose a
check made payable to Temple Avodah PTO.
We are always looking for people to volunteer their time to support PTO events. If you are interested in helping out, you
can contact the PTO president. We welcome new ideas and help in planning upcoming events.
You can stay apprised of PTO functions for you and your children by visiting the Temple website at www.avodah.org and
viewing the general calendar or the PTO page http://www.avodah.org/study/pta. We also have a PTO facebook page :
https://www.facebook.com/groups/741317192679385/
On behalf of the PTO, we thank you in advance for your support and involvement.

The Jewish Community Council of Oceanside (JECOCO)
and the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC
together with community synagogues are collecting pennies
for the “flowers for the children” areas of our Holocaust Memorial Garden
that will remember the children that perished.
Your pennies will be used to plant the blooming flowers in their memory.
This memorial garden, at the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC,
will provide a sculpture, landscape and benches so that anyone can come
to honor and remember those that perished and those that survived.
Dedication will be Erev Yom Hashoah, Wednesday, May 4.
Also participating in this project:
Temple Avodah, Chabad of Oceanside, Oceanside Jewish Center,
Darchei Noam, Young Israel of Oceanside, Shaar Hashamayim,
South Baldwin Jewish Center, and Congregation Beth Israel of Hempstead.

PJ LIBRARY COMES TO TEMPLE AVODAH
UP TO RECEIVE FREE JEWISH CHILDREN’S BOOKS & MUSIC !
SIGN
Temple Avodah is thrilled to offer PJ Library, a unique program, made possible through the generosity of the
Amanda Rose Kanowitz Children’s Library Fund at Temple Avodah. Families with children 6 months through
8 years of age living in Oceanside and its surrounding communities who are interested in exploring Jewish life
are invited to sign up. PJ Library at Temple Avodah is a one- book-per-family program. If you have more
than one eligible child, you will need to select the appropriate books. Please fill in this sign-up form and
circle only one choice from the book categories described below for your family to share. Please
select carefully – once made, your choice is final.
Apples & Honey (ages 6 months to 2 years) – simple pictures and concepts, often in the form of sturdy
board books
Bagels & Lox (ages 2 to 3) – books with eye-catching illustrations, predictable language and action
Challah Toast (ages 3 to 4) – slightly longer stories with predictable plots and more detailed illustrations
Dates & Almonds (ages 4 to 5) – longer stories with more advanced vocabulary and character
development
Egg Matzah (ages 5 to 6) – more nuanced stories including fantasy, folktales, Bible stories, and realistic
fiction connecting to children’s daily lives
Falafel (ages 6 to 7) – imaginative storylines imbued with rich language, featuring folklore and tales from
different time periods
Gefilte Fish (ages 7 to 8) – increasingly complex stories with plots that twist and turn; some picturebook biographies and engaging historical fiction
Hamantaschen (through age 8) – more sophisticated narratives to encourage meaningful discussion
with older children; some historical fiction and story collections

Many in our congregation are unaware that our Temple has
grave sites available to members at greatly reduced prices
when purchased through Temple Avodah.
There are still spaces available in
New Montifiore Cemetery in West Babylon
and Washington Memorial Park in Coram.
When buying through Temple the savings can be
in the thousands of dollars.
Although we tend to put off these matters,
it is an inevitability that eventually needs to be addressed.
Temple Avodah does not require full payment at the time of
purchase and allows its members to pay off the cost.
Your purchase will also help your Temple raise needed funds.
For your family’s sake, please don’t put this off.
Contact the Temple office and they will be able to help you
with the very important matter.
