Gentleman of the Road
If you haven’t heard yet there is a
huge music festival coming to
Waverly this June. There will be
thousands of people visiting
Waverly, many of them camping
near the music sites by Wartburg.
We’ll extend hospitality to the
visitors by offering nice warm
showers. The Iowa Annual
Conference Disaster Shower
trailers will be here the weekend
of the concert. We’re asking guests
to make a donation—the
donations will be used as a
fundraiser for our UMCOR Mission
Trip in February 2016.
We’ll also be selling snacks as a
fundraiser for our Youth Group
Mission trip!
We need a few volunteers to help
with hospitality. Please let the
church office, Pastor Deborah or
Lauren Loonsfoot know if you’d
like to help. Dates are
June 19 8am-4pm and June 20th
8am-Noon. We will not be open
during the main stage
performances.

June / July 2015
1,825 days/60 months/5 years, give or take a few days here or there.
That’s how long I have called Waverly, Iowa home. Not really a big
deal unless you put things in perspective, this is the second longest I
have lived in the same home…in my nearly 54 years.
By the time I was 15 I had lived in 5 different homes in 3 different
states. I spent nearly 20 years in the south. I graduated from high
school and college in Tennessee and spent most of my first career in
Georgia. But, I’ve also lived in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Colorado!
It’s almost enough to give a gal a complex. Except. Except for one
thing…
You see, first and foremost I consider myself to be a citizen of the
Kingdom of God.
As an infant I was claimed by God, baptized and adopted into God’s
big family in a Methodist Church in Butler, Pennsylvania. In 1977 I
was confirmed by God in a United Methodist Church in Morris
Chapel, Tennessee. In 1991 God called me back to the church by
profession of faith at Mountain View United Methodist Church in
Stone Mountain, Georgia. In 2002 my call by God to enter the
ministry was affirmed by Eldora United Methodist Church here in
Iowa.
All along the way, no matter the twists and turns, I am reminded again
and again that first and foremost I am a citizen of the Kingdom of
God – and that makes all the difference in the world.

This month I give thanks for the community that has been home
for my 4 children and myself over the past 5 years. You have
been with us to celebrate both my daughters’ marriages, the birth
of grandson Zayden (aka Z), Ethan’s graduation and y’all are
getting to watch Justin grow into a fine young man.
We have been adopted into the Waverly community because of
who you are – sisters and brothers in Christ. No matter what our
culture says about church folk (and, alas, most of the time there
isn’t very good news from pollsters and the like), do not doubt
that we have been blessed to be a blessing and called to lift up
and build up the Kingdom of God in our particular place and
time.
So how do I see Trinity United Methodist Church doing this? We
are doing Kingdom work together! I am so proud and blessed to
be able to witness the many ways that our church throws open our
doors to our community – we are known as a place of hospitality,
learning, healing, and sharing. Because of your faithfulness men
and women, young and old meet Jesus here, and for this I give
thanks and praise!
I am curious to see what the Holy Spirit has in store for us in the
months to come. More than anything, I am looking forward to
the ways that we will grow as children of God and citizens of
God’s Kingdom.
We have some fun things planned for this summer! Enjoy our
June/July newsletter and I hope to see you soon!
In Christ, together,
Pastor Deborah
Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness,
And all these things, shall be added onto you, Alleu, alleluia
Ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find.
Knock and the door shall be opened onto you. Alleu, Alleuia

Building repair update.
As you may have noticed we have experienced some roof/wall
leaks at the Wesley Foyer drive-up canopy. A roof membrane leak
was detected about 1 ½ years ago and was repaired. The repair did
not last and further damage has occurred.
We have removed the damaged areas including some windows.
To insure there is no further damage we will be removing the row
of windows just above the roof canopy so we can further inspect
for damage. We will be replacing the roof but we will not be
replacing the windows. If you have any questions please contact

From the Director
of Discipleship
Summer is upon us. School is
out, Sunday school is over until
September and we’ve moved to
one worship service at 9:30.
Normally we think of our
church activities slowing down
during the summer but that is
definitely not the case at
Trinity. This summer we have
many opportunities
to connect with
your church family
and the
community. We
hope you’ll join us
for some fun!
Lifetree Café will continue on
Wednesdays at 6pm. I hope
sometime this summer you’ll
join us. If you haven’t been to
Lifetree Café yet you may be
wondering what to expect.
Don’t be shy, I promise we
don’t bite. What you can expect
is respectful conversation on
fun, silly, interesting,
informational, serious and
sometimes difficult topics. We
talk and we listen. The
beautiful thing about Lifetree
Café is “You’re welcome just as
you are. Your thoughts are
welcome, your doubts are
welcome, we’re all in this
together…” Unlike more
traditional church studies - there
is no homework. You
don’t have to prepare
anything; you can
come as you please
when a topic interests
you. Each week we
offer free child care
and always plenty of
snacks. So please, come check
out Lifetree Café!
June also brings Vacation Bible
School! VBS is a guaranteed
great time! We will be
gathering Sunday, June 14th18th starting each evening at
6pm and ending at 8pm. The
theme this year is G-Force:

exploring how to put faith in action! Go to page 21 for more
details!
June also gives us the opportunity for Trinity to exhibit
hospitality to our community and visitors during the Gentleman
of the Road concert. Read page 3 for more information.
Also, the community garden is now under way – we are still
looking for folks to join us in growing some yummy veggies in
the green space this summer. Contact me for more information
or stop by the office and visit with Ross.
This July we will have a group of Senior High Youth and adults
participate in a mission Trip to the Matthew 25 ministry in the
Czech Village of Cedar Rapids. While there the group will be
working on the Urban Farm, assisting on a housing project, and
helping neighbors in the community.
There are so many ways to Celebrate, Learn, and Serve together. I know we all have many summer activities on our plate
but I hope you’ll join in on some of the great group activities
your church is offering. Through all of the busy-ness of the
summer don’t lose focus on what’s most important. The love of
God and neighbor and making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the
transformation of the world! We have many opportunities to live
into our faith and deepen our relationships with one another. So
take a dive off the high board and join us as we remember to love
one another and serve Christ together!
God Bless,
Lauren Loonsfoot

conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse
setting.
This is the kind of place where you'd meet a friend for food and drink
and fun, where the atmosphere encourages conversations, questions
and sharing one’s story.
An hour long, it features real stories of real people, Biblical insights,
laughter and opportunities to serve; we hope you’ll join us!
