Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Pastor’s Cornered ……33rd
Edition
So, what’s going on in your neck of the woods?
Are you having a good summer? Did you get a
chance to vacation at your favorite spot? Did you
work on that project you wanted to complete? Did
you get to do something that you really enjoy
doing? I hope you did. If you haven’t already –
then what are you waiting for?
August 10, 2014
“Oklahoma!” – you have heard him sing haven’t
you? He is in Oklahoma doing what he loves to do
most – making disciples!
DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR THE
PICNIC!!! IT’S NEXT WEEK AND THEY
HAVE TO ORDER FOOD!!!
THANK YOU
I’m sure you have heard that we (Catholics in the
Diocese of Pittsburgh) are now evangelizing! Yep,
you and me and those other people at Mass (even
the people still at home in bed on Sunday
mornings) – we have been called to evangelize.
Don’t look at me with that confusion on your face our Bishop crafted a 60 page booklet on “The
Church Evangelizing”. (It’s a great piece by the
way – lots of people collaborated with him to
publish the final product.)
The Church Alive
campaign that we just over-the-top, successfully
(thank you), finished up with the pledge drive is
about so much more than money – it’s about
reaching out to people; all people, Christians and
non-Christians, churched and un-churched, regular
Mass attendees and the “nod-to-God” once a year
people , all people.
It’s about the New
Evangelization.
Now I know you are wondering how you can be a
part of this New Evangelization because you surely
do not want to go knocking door to door recruiting
people to the Catholic Faith so let me share a
statement I came across in an online catholic blog
– “Be the change you want to see”! Get excited
about something in the church and recruit others
with the same passion to build on it and soon more
people will join in.
Be welcoming with your
excitement, let your light shine and reflect God’s
image outward to draw others in. Jesus charged
us to go and make disciples. I also saw another
catchy phrase on a catholic blog describing Jesus
but thought it would be a good slogan for any
church moving full speed ahead with the New
Evangelization – “The Way. The Truth. The Light.
Reaching the ends of the earth one person at a
time!” So what are you waiting for?
Again, I have to put to rest the rumors as to why Fr.
Lou’s regular column did not appear this week. He
did not get cast in the starring role of the musical
We received a letter from the Mission Office of the
Diocese that read as follows…
“Thank you for your donation of $3,004.00 that your
parish contributed for the 2014 Mission Cooperation
Plan (MCP). This heart-felt gift will help the missionary
who made the appeal to your parishioners to pass on
the message of Christ to those who have not heard it or
still do not understand it, and to serve the poor as Jesus
has instructed us.”
In Christ’s love, Rev. Ronald P. Lengwin
DIOCESAN CHOIR AUDITIONS
Auditions for 2014-2015 Diocesan Choir season will
soon be held. The Choir, under the direction of Fr. Jim
Chepponis, Music Director for the Diocese of Pittsburgh,
sings for the major Diocesan events at St. Paul’s
Cathedral throughout the year. Currently there are
openings in the soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections.
In addition to being good singers, potential members
must be capable sight-readers due to a limited rehearsal
schedule, and at least 18 years of age. Rehearsals are
held at St. John Capistran Church in Upper St. Clair.
Audition times may be scheduled by calling Doris Anne
in the Diocesan Music Office (412-456-3042) before
August 19th.
RECIPES WANTED
The Pittsburgh Catholic is looking for recipes for the
annual Fall Events Guide to be published in the
Pittsburgh Catholic Magazine in September. Send a
recipe for your favorite fall dish to Peggy Zezza at 135
First Avenue Suite 200, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 or email
[email protected]. Be sure to include your
name, parish and why the recipe is one of your favorites!
A Family Perspective
by Bud Ozar
The demands of family can be so overwhelming we feel
walking on water would be easier. When Jesus was
pressured, he dismissed everyone, so he could be “by
himself and pray.” When overwhelmed and stressed, go
to a quiet place and surrender your pressured feelings to
the Lord using Peter’s prayer in today’s gospel: “Lord,
save me.”
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: Rejoice!”
