THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING
Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and
so they endure from generation to generation. The
Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this
Sunday’s Gospel: “Bread is the beginning of everything.”
Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have
felt that it was too late for bread—too late for life itself.
This great prophet was at the end of his rope and
endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One
offers food and drink. The other gives startling
directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread
for his journey. On the strength of the heaven‐sent gift
of food, he walks to the mountain of God.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers Himself, not just as
bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He
gives His flesh as life for the world. “I am the bread of
life” (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything.

WHAT IS RCIA?
RCIA stands for the
Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults.
It’s a series of classes
that present an adult
exploration of the
Catholic faith. RCIA is an opportunity for people to
learn the basics of what it means to be Catholic, to
ask burning questions, and to seek ways to more fully
open their lives to Jesus Christ. It is a faith formation
program for those who are not Catholic, or for the
baptized Catholic who has not completed the
Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and First
Communion).
WHEN DOES RCIA START?
The RCIA Program at St. Catherine of Siena Parish
meets every Tuesday from 6:45 pm to 8:45 pm, year
round. New participants are welcome to join at any
time. While Tuesday evening is the primary time
commitment, occasionally there may be other
commitments depending on what part of the process
you are going through.
WHAT IF I'M NOT SURE I WANT TO
BECOME CATHOLIC OR BE CONFIRMED?
Not a problem! Our RCIA Program is structured in a
way that invites you to make small commitments
until you're sure you want to proceed. The initial
meetings are designed to answer some basic
questions, and give you a feel of what the journey is
like. After the first few classes, we'll explore the core
Christian message while beginning to answer your
most burning questions. As a new inquirer goes
further into the program, we invite you to decide
where the RCIA program is taking you.
WHAT IF I'M ALREADY CONFIRMED
CATHOLIC, CAN I COME TOO?
You are welcome to join us on Tuesdays to learn more
about the Catholic faith. It's not uncommon for us to
have some questions about the faith, and we want to
help you find the answers you seek. Together, we can
journey to grow closer to Jesus Christ.
I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS.
Great! Just contact Carlo Perez at 925-448-1100 or
email him at [email protected].
Help Needed! The RCIA Program is
looking for volunteers to help to provide
hospitality for participants on the first
and second Tuesdays of each month.
Time commitment is from 7:45 pm to 8:30 pm and
would be a wonderful chance to interact with people
who are exploring our Catholic faith, and bear
witness to them through a concrete act of charity.
If you would like to help us in this RCIA ministry,
please get in touch with Carlo at 925-448-1100 or
email him at [email protected]. Thanks so much.
From the Pastor’s Desk
Nineteenth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
Food for the journey would be a good topic sentence for
today’s readings. In our first reading Elijah prays for death after
his one day journey into the desert. He despairs of his life and
his seemingly unworthiness, but an angel intervenes and
provides food and drink. The angel orders him to nourish
himself so that he will be strengthened, and his journey of forty
days will be completed.
We are all in a journey in this life. We are journeying home
to God. We need to be nourished and be given strength to be
able to accept the challenges that life will confront us with.
When we enter from the back of our church, we will notice
that on both sides of the church that there are an equal number
of stained glass windows. They lead us to the altar. They are all
images of saints. They were all humans like us. They were not
perfect. Many were very imperfect in some aspects of their
lives. What made them saints was their connection to God and
their willingness to surrender themselves to the plan of God.
They were nourished by the Holy Spirit and Jesus.
We can be nourished just as they were, for we have the
opportunity to receive the Holy Eucharist at Mass. Jesus tell us
that He is the “Living Bread come down from heaven. If anyone
eats this Bread he shall live forever.”
Unlike the Jews in Jesus’ time who doubted and murmured
against His teaching because they could not recognize the
presence of the Holy in their lives, we have the benefit of
knowing who Jesus really is. It is this difference that can help us
to paradise.

FULFILLING THE PROMISE
Heavenly Father, Creator of all, we thank You
for the many blessings You have bestowed on us.
We offer praise and thanksgiving for those
who have handed down our faith from
generation to generation for over 140 years
at St. Catherine of Siena Parish.
Open our hearts to Your call, teach us
to serve as good stewards of our parish,
our community, and our Diocese.
With hope and trust we ask You to send
Your Holy Spirit to guide our good works
and be with us as we fulfill the promise to follow
Jesus, share our gifts, and give glory to Your name.
We remain grateful for Your constant love and
entrust our journey into Your hands,
through the intercession of our Blessed Mother,
and our beloved patroness, St. Catherine of Siena,
through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
