quality workmanship.
• Encouraging landscape contractors and landscape
architects to continue their efforts to raise the industry’s

consideration. Jury and judging procedures for the Judges’
Special Award will be the same as the Grand Awards. Merit
Awards may be given at the discretion of the judges. Awards

Residential, Less Than $20,000
Sponsored by Monrovia Nursery, Azusa, California
Veridian Landscapes, LTD, Bexley
Bickford/Ward Home
“A second floor office and master bedroom
overlook the garden as well as large windows on
the first floor. All these perspectives were taken
into account and the garden was designed for
season round interest and minimal maintenance.”
Grand Award
GreenScapes Landscape Co., Columbus
The Burnell-Potter Residence
“Our design solution maintained an existing gas grill and
included space for a portable charcoal grill. We
incorporated low-maintenance, shade tolerant
landscape plants that blend with the existing casual
gardens bordering the perimeter of the yard.”
Merit Award
Oakland Design Associates, Columbus
Thompson Residence
“Multiple focal points include a Japanese Maple,
serviceberries, a magnolia, birches, and a pergola. The
geometric layout of the paths are consistant with the
lawn edge, thus unifying the hardscape and plantscape
into one piece.”
Merit Award
Residential, $20,000 to $50,000
Sponsored by Buckeye Resources, South Charleston, Ohio
The Clearwater Group, Westerville
Parry Residence
“This project’s goal was to create a terraced garden walkthrough down to a patio overlooking a golf course. Our
design challenge needed to incorporate a terrific nine foot
grade change and included the use of an existing deck
spanning the side and back of the house.”
Merit Award
The Clearwater Group, Westerville
Zapf Residence
“Our challenge was to create a unique outdoor living space
in a typical suburban development. The goal of this project
was to create a paver patio with a pergola along with
plantings to create a lush garden space.”
Merit Award
American Beauty Landscaping, Boardman
The Cuddy Residence
“An avid gardener, our client wanted to have lots of color,
and attractive side yard visible from the dining room, and a
large patio space to enjoy her evenings outdoors as well as
to entertain. Harmonizing with her turn-of-the-century
historical home was essential.”
Merit Award
American Beauty Landscaping, Boardman
Ken & Elizabeth Anderson
“Our client wanted to create a more inviting entranceway for
her home business. With little time for yard work, the new
landscape needed to be as maintenance free as possible.
A new garage door, trim paint, all new lighting, an address
stone, a new wrought iron window garden, and carefully
selected pots completed this project.”
Merit Award
Residential, $50,000 to $100,000
Sponsored by Scarff’s Nursery, New
Carlisle, Ohio
GreenScapes Landscape Co., Columbus
The Hill Residence
“The new owner of a small, cottage-style home wanted a
simple front landscape that would lend a Cape Cod feel.
Completed in two phases, over 60 tons of stone were
brought in to create a serene summer garden featuring a
Moss Rock wall and a mulit-tiered waterfall on the hillside.”
Merit Award
Residential, Over $100,000
Sponsored by Shemin Nurseries, Columbus, OH
Schill Landscaping & Lawn Care, Sheffield
Village
The Grossi Residence
“Our homeowners asked us to create them a
beautiful outdoor living area. They requested only
that we incorporate unique plantings, multiple
entertaining areas, concerns for privacy, and a
water feature. We met these goals by creating
rolling mounds of landscape gardens that surround
the property for privacy and by creating many
inviting areas to entertain.”
Grand Award
Grunder Landscaping Co., Miamisburg
Doubleday Farm
“This residential landscape retreat was designed to allow
the family to entertain and relax in several areas. Designed
to have four seasons of interest, the landscape blends well
with the surrounding woods and new garage. Features
include an arbor and a gazebo that allows for visitors to
enjoy their beautiful surroundings.”
Merit Award
Rice’s Nursery & Landscaping, Inc., North Canton
Weinsz Residence
“The client asked us to design and install all site features
such as vehicular and pedestrian access, swimming
pool, patio/decks and water feature for their new
home. The hardscapes consist of Pennsylvania
bluestone paver walkways, terraces and steps. Mass
perennial and ornamental grass plantings mimic the
natural effect of the adjacent wetlands.”
Merit Award
Commercial, Less Than $50,000
Sponsored by Willoway Nurseries, Avon, Ohio
Natorp’s Inc. Landscaping, Mason
Maxwell Drive Entry
“The goal of this project was to create a pleasing
view from the street while also screening surprise
design elements that can be enjoyed only after
entering the estate section of this golf course
community. Once beyond the pergolas, a
miniature golf hole can be found to the left, with
heavy backdrop plantings its entire length, while to
the right, a water feature hosts various trees and
seasonal color.”
Grand Award
Commercial, Over $50,000
Sponsored by Warner Kingwood Nurseries, Willoughby Hills, Ohio
GreenScapes Landscape Co., Columbus
Muirfield Drive Landscape Improvements
“A statue of Jack Nicklaus was installed in the center
median of a suburban boulevard and sat for several years
without any landscape surrounding it. The landscape
architect was challenged with making the statue look
appropriate even though it was not at a golf course.
Mounding was formed to resemble a links fairway.
Thousands of perennials were used to create drifts of color.
Over 100 shade, ornamental and evergreen trees were also
planted.”
Merit Award
Fredericks Landscaping, Inc., Cincinnati
Landscape Renovation
“The mission from this company was twofold: to create a
park-like campus for employees and to replace the mature
trees they had to remove to accommodate new
construction. A garden setting adjacent to the cafeteria was
designed with an emphasis on color and texture variation.
We also emphasized the reestablishment of as many
hardwood trees as possible, blending a variety of
evergreens and ornamentals throughout the property to
add color through the year.”
Merit Award
Natorp’s Inc. Landscaping, Mason
Heritage Clubhouse
“Our challenges for this project were to screen the parking
lot from view as you enter the site, while drawing people to
the second entranceway and to create separation between
various use areas without blocking views onto the course
from the second story balcony. The use of a long Viburnum
hedge provided the needed parking lot screening and
concealed the first entry. Separation of the use areas was
accomplished primarily through the use of ornamental
grasses and a thin tree planting.”
Merit Award
Unique or Unusual, Unlimited
Sponsored by A.M. Leonard, Piqua, Ohio
American Beauty Landscaping, Boardman
Paradise Point & The Boathouse
“This unique project is a piece of Adirondack
paradise in Ohio. A boathouse and summerhouse
are anchored in place by tons of naturally placed
boulders. Flagstone and gravel paths link the two
structures while manmade mountain springs
entertain both eye and ear. No natural stone was
on site. Every piece was placed by a
discerning foreman’s eye.”
Grand Award
Spellacy’s Turf-Lawn, Galena
Outdoor Fireplace
“This Southern Delaware custom exterior masonry
fireplace includes low voltage sconce lights, one of
which illuminates a flagstone mantle and “Lobster
Tile” that has personal significance for the
homeowners. Construction began in late December
and, to counter the winter weather, we constructed
a cold frame over the previously poured footer and
heated our structure with a kerosene fueled heater
until the fireplace outgrew the tent.”
Merit Award
Larry Lang Landscaping, Ravenna
Steinert Glass School
“The Steinert Glass School is located in the 1888 water
plant building, which closed about 1985. The building
was purchased by John Steinert in 2001 and
remodeled into a blown glass school facility. The
water feature is an original feed line from a nearby
well field. The plant materials are water plants created
from metals used at Steinert Industries. The cattails,
arrowheads and rush plants are copper; the lily pads are
brass.”
Merit Award
Water Features, Unlimited
Sponsored by Green Vista Water Gardens, Enon, Ohio
Wheeler Landscaping, Chagrin Falls
The Manchen Residence
“The goal of this project was to create a water feature which
blended with this heavily wooded backyard, while providing
a focal point for the patio, screen porch, and living room.
We created a cascading stream bed which appears to be
coming out of the surrounding woods. Over 15 tons of rock
was used to create the finished product. The constant
sound of cascading water creates a soothing, peaceful
environment for this wooded backyard.”
Merit Award
Theme Gardens, Unlimited
Sponsored by Decker Nursery, Groveport, Ohio
Floralandscape, Inc., Toledo
Eldridge Residence
“This garden is nestled in a quiet corner of a wooded yard
overlooking the Ottawa River floodplain. The existing
deck and sunroom gave the client plenty of outdoor living
space, but lacked intimacy and character. The designer
was asked to create a separate area for relaxation with
distinctive focal points viewable from the home’s living
room and sunroom. The solution was a circular terrace,
a small water pond and stream, and colorful shade-loving
plantings.”
Merit Award
Residential Landscape Maintenance, Unlimited
Sponsored by Klyn Nursery, Perry, Ohio
The Brickman Group, Ltd., Columbus
A Residence in Bexley
“This property is the result of demolishing two
established houses to create the owners’ visionary
estate, which has a diverse and complex array of
landscape materials that require a full range of
estate gardening services. The project has an
extensive scope of work including over 80 hours of
bed care, spring and summer pruning, Integrated
Pest Management, fertilization, turf care, irrigation
service, arboriculture, two rotations of seasonal
color, 134 yards of mulching, edging, leaf removal,
snow removal, and deep-root feeding of the large
mature trees.”
Grand Award
The Brickman Group, Ltd., Columbus
A Residence in Delaware
“This residential estate is host to numerous social
events and home to a very active family. The renovation to
a 55-acre site resulted in an array of landscape materials
that require a full range of estate gardening services. Three
rotations of seasonal color, in addition to plant material in
every nook surrounding play areas for children, present a
lush and colorful outdoor environment. Crews spend 25
hours each week over two visits to ensure that all of the
homeowners’ expectations are exceeded.”
Merit Award
M.J. Design Associates, Inc., Dublin
Various Projects
“Attention to detail is the key to a successful maintenance
program. During the winter months, we provide dormant
pruning of trees and deciduous shrubs. During early spring,
clean ups are important, along with edging and mulching.
Fertilization programs are begun in spring along with a
proactive approach to weed control. In summer, annuals and
perennials are cared for, along with selective pruning.”
Merit Award
Schill Landscaping & Lawn Care, Sheffield Village
The Docherty Residence
“The scope of this project is total estate management. This
includes annual and perennial plantings, tree and shrub
care, insect and disease control, erosion control, animal
management, Christmas lighting, lawn maintenance
(twice per week), edging, pruning, container plantings, and
water management.”
Merit Award
Commercial Landscape Maintenance, Unlimited
Sponsored by Studebaker Nurseries, New Carlisle, Ohio
Jeffrey Allen Corp., Cincinnati

traffic island plantings. The emphasis here is on an
abundance of flower color from April until December, with
annuals, perennials, and chrysanthemums.”
Merit Award
Buck & Sons Landscape Services, Hilliard
Advance Drainage Systems
“This corporate headquarters in Central Ohio is located in a
neighborhood in transition. It is bordered on two sides by
residential neighbors and otherwise surrounded by
undeveloped commercial land. The main landscape feature
is a beautifully landscaped pond on the west side of the
building.”
Merit Award
Garden Structures, Under $15,000
Sponsored by McArthur Lumber and Post, McArthur, Ohio
Merit Award
Spellacy’s Turf-Lawn, Galena
Outdoor Fireplace
“The complete design for this Southern Delaware county
home includes a custom exterior masonry fireplace. The
scale of the home and lot, the size of the existing interior
fireplace, and 1200 square feet of multi-level flagstone
patio called for a proportionately sized fireplace. The 14
foot width of the structure’s base and hearth follows the
curved contour of the perimeter of the patio and acts not
only as retention for the patio base, but also as a seat
wall that can comfortably seat 8-10 people. The arch
details were constructed referencing Ian Cramb’s 1984
book “The Art of the Stone Mason” using Scottish
methods of arch construction.”
Garden Structures, Over $15,000
Sponsored by McArthur Lumber and Post, McArthur, Ohio
M.J. Design Associates, Inc., Dublin
Walden Residence
“The transformation of this outdoor living space featuring a
patio, hot-tub and screened-in gazebo, has created an
environment that is inviting and relaxing. The upper level,
featuring a grill, is flush with the backdoor threshold,
allowing for easy transition from one room to another. The
three steps down to the lower deck, sitting two feet lower
than the threshold, allows for additional seating with views
towards the woods and for easy access from the stone
path from the garage. With the gazebo being the main
outdoor deck use, the remaining deck space could be
minimized to allow for easy traffic flow and still hold a table
and 6-8 chairs.”
Merit Award
Dan Druffel Inc., Maineville
Bohlke Residence
“The purpose of this project was to install a pool and
convert the lower levels of the yard into usable space. A
dilapidated playhouse on top of the old smokehouse was
removed. In its place we constructed a cedar arbor. A
stone hearth was also constructed, using the smokehouse
chimney. We were further responsible for constructing the
new pool, quartzite deck, stone retaining walls, quartzite
stairs, fencing, wrought iron railings and gates.”
Merit Award
Pavements, Under $15,000
Sponsored by Coffman Stone Co., Gahanna, Ohio
Floralandscape, Inc., Toledo
Zychowicz Residence
“The primary goal of the designer and
homeowner was for the landscape to reflect
and enhance the Georgian Style of the residence.
Supported by a natural stone retaining wall, this
terrace seamlessly connects all of the outdoor
living spaces while providing plenty of space to
relax and entertain. The terrace overlooks a wide
lawn space and natural woodlands. Simple, yet
bold, plantings harmoniously tie the architecture of
the home and the terrace together while adding
scale and structure to the landscape.”
Grand Award
Grunder Landscaping Co., Miamisburg
The Bradshaw Residence
“The client requested a patio that would be more open and
inviting. A rectilinear design was chosen to emphasize the
open view to the Southwest of the property. Taking cues
from the client’s collection of oriental rugs, each patio
section is defined by the soldier course to mimic a random
overlay effect. Stone, plant material and a water feature
work together to create a relaxing private space for the
homeowners.”
Merit Award
American Beauty Landscaping, Boardman
Whitehill Residence, Patio & Walk
“The owners of this Civil War era home wanted a safe,
welcoming area in their backyard. Located in a
historic district, they were concerned with the
material selection and compatibility to the home.
Barnstone, antique flagstone, toprock and decorative
gravel were used for compatible colors and
contrasting texture.”
Merit Award
American Beauty Landscaping, Boardman
The Cuddy Residence
“The client’s historical home provided very little outdoor
space in which to entertain. The client loves the outdoors,
to sit and read or entertain guests. An avid gardener, she
wanted to access her side yard and grow flowers which
she loves. The choice of materials and the design needed
to maintain the historical feel, yet provide a modern
lifestyle.”
Merit Award
American Beauty Landscaping, Boardman
Ken & Elizabeth Anderson
“The client wanted to create a safer and more inviting
entranceway for clients. The goal was to create curb appeal and
bring this 50s ranch into the 21st century. The cement porch and
steps were veneered to match the new patio. Beds were raised
to help drainage, while rock-faced sandstone defines the walk
and reduces soil movement.”
Merit Award
Pavements, Over $15,000
Sponsored by Lang Stone, Columbus,
Ohio
Dan Druffel Inc., Maineville
Bohlke Residence
“The purpose of this project was to install a pool
and convert the lower levels of the yard into
usable space. Features include single piece
quartzite treads for the staircase and a blue
quartzite deck. Pieces were hand selected to
match the roof of the home. Bull nose quartzite
coping was selected to accentuate the Roman
pool.”
Grand Award
Wheeler Landscaping, Chagrin Falls
The Cook Residence
“For this project, the client had two goals. With their
existing outdoor area on the north side of the house,
overlooking a heavily shaded ravine, their desire was
to create a seating area wich provided privacy while
relaxing in a semi-shaded area. The second objective
was to encourage visitors to use the front door.”

Sponsored by Ammon Wholesale Nursery, Inc., Burlington, Kentucky
Lifestyle Landscaping, Inc., North Ridgeville
2004 Home & Garden Show
“The purpose of this 1,038 square foot indoor
display garden is to showcase the creativity,
workmanship, and overall capability of our
company. In four days, eighteen tons of fieldstone,
350 square feet of paving, 100 feet of curbstone,
90 shrubs, 275 tulip pots, 120 flats of moss and
over 300 perennials were used to build the
garden, in addition to the two water features,
structure, and arbor. Overall, we tried to achieve
a garden highlighting the many aspects of outdoor
enjoyment through texture, color, sound and
fragrance.”
Grand Award
Schill Landscaping & Lawn Care, Sheffield Village
2004 Home & Garden Show

steps leading you to an outdoor grill area with a unique
water feature falling through a sandstone table sitting area.
A large cedar pergola is strategically incorporated. The
garden is filled with lush plantings of Hosta,

“Land And Living”
“The intent of the ‘Land and Living’ Exhibit, constructed
during the Ohio State Fair, is to show various soil and water
conservation, and erosion control techniques. Sixty-five
tons of a variety of Ohio stone is used to construct an
artesian water source, stream corridor with gravel bottom
and sidewall, mock drain tile with limestone rip rap, and a
culvert system under the bridge. Other features include:
1000 native and nursery plantings, two agricultural fields
with corn and soybeans, a photo area and native fish.”
Merit Award
Use of Seasonal Color and/or Container Gardens, Unlimited
Sponsored by Rusty Oak Nursery, LTD, Valley City, Ohio
Geauga Lake, Aurora
Topiary Gardens
“Topiaries represent a departure from what is normally
thought of as container gardens. The frames
represent the containers, the basic component, while
the packing and plants complete the finished product.
All of our topiaries have internal irrigation and serve
as accent or focal points of many of our landscape
themes.”
Merit Award
The Brickman Group, Ltd., Columbus
A Residence in Delaware
“The family-oriented homeowners of this property
have a unique desire to create a ‘Disneyland’ look to
their property. Three rotations of seasonal color, in addition
to plant material in every nook surrounding play areas for
children, aids in accomplishing this goal. Each year, it is
typical to install more than 4,750 four inch annual flowers.”
Merit Award
Perennial Gardens, Unlimited
Sponsored by Millcreek Gardens, Ostrander, Ohio
M.J. Design Associates, Inc., Dublin
N.G. Residence
“This residential landscape began as a blank canvas.
Overall, our goal was to provide color and texture
throughout the seasons. Great effort was made to create
balance and harmony with the colors. We achieved this by
repeating small pockets of color to tie the entire landscape
together. Our main focus was summer, as the clients enjoy
spending time on their deck, collecting fresh flowers, and
photographing nature.”
