Chef In My Garden 2005 3rd Annual Dinner Series to Benefit Growing Gardens- 2005 June 26, 2005| Chef Kevin Gibson in Gay and Steven Nance’s Garden The third year of the Chef in My Garden tradition was a great success and brought many new friends to the Growing Garden community. We couldn’t have wished for a more elegant setting to kick off the first dinner of the summer. MENU Duck and porcini rillettes Grilled fresh Gulf prawns with salsa San Sebastian Fava bean puree and speck Caipirinhas English pea and lettuce soup With Oregon white truffles Clos Val Bruyere, Cassis, Provence 2004 Fennel roasted loin of pork Romano beans with savory Roasted beets with walnut oil Salt roasted Charlotte potatoes The Nance’s inspiring garden and palapa house— a gorgeous setting for our first dinner of 2005 Chef In My Garden Dinner Series. Plant expert and writer SEAN HOGAN of Cistus Design Nursery was on hand as special guest. It was a fabulous evening that even the rain didn’t dampen! Monique Siu and Kevin Gibson, Sean Hogan from Cistus Design Nursery, Hosts Gay and Steven Nance, and Growing Gardens Executive Director Debra Lippoldt Page 2 Chef In My Garden 2005 July 24 | Chef Marco Shaw at Beasley & Simpson’s Bella Madrona On July 24th CHEF MARCO SHAW of FIFE brought his trademark blend of traditional regional American cuisine featuring the best of local foods to BELLA MADRONA, the garden of GEOF BEASLEY and JIM SAMPSON with garden expert LUCY HARDIMAN. Guests toured this magical, five- acre, 25-year-old garden featuring diverse and exotic plants, whimsical and sophisticated art pieces and a natural pond and water features - all of which inspired a song by Pink Martini. Guests were surprised to learn that even the crayfish Marco served were local - from Oregon's own Lake Billy Chinook! Chef Marco serves his fabulous bisque. MENU First Course Crayfish bisque with sweet corn and wasabi flying fish roe Second Course Green bean salad with tarragon and tomato tartar Third Course Seared pork loin with Walla Walla onions and shiitakes Enjoying hors d’oeuvre in a fabulous setting! Final Course Roasted peaches with blueberries and vanilla ice cream Relaxing in one of Bella Madrona’s many garden spaces. Writer Vern Nelson regales guests with his wealth of garden knowledge. CHEF VITO DILULLO of CIAO VITO returned to us on August 7th at the garden and art studio of BONNIE MELTZER and RICHARD ELLMYER with food garden writer VERN NELSON. Inspired by the talent of Bonnie Meltzer in the shadow of her art studio, guests experienced Vito's artistic passion for sustainable and simple Italian cooking. The dinner was held in the midst of a mini, urban farm in the heart of North Portland, where our hosts grow much of their yearly produce. Bonnie previewed plans for her latest project- “Sustaining Change on the American Farm”- sponsored by American Farmland Trust and Maryhill Museum. Selected as one of only a few artists, Bonnie will create a special work reflecting her experiences observing a local farm family. Page 4 Chef In My Garden 2005 August 21 | Chef Morgan Brownlow in Susan & David Kobos’ Garden MENU HORS D’OEUVRE Peaches wrapped with speck ham Crostini of eggplant, summer peppers and basil Shrimp arrabiata Special Chef In My Garden Cocktail On August 21st, CHEF MORGAN BROWNLOW of CLARKLEWIS set up his kitchen on the three-acre farm of DAVID and SUSAN KOBOS. Our special guest was garden writer KYM POKORNY. Guests had free range of the farm where the Kobos' raise over 200 varieties of vegetables, dahlias, sheep, geese and chicken. Page 5 Chef In My Garden 2005 September 11 | Chef David Machado in Jerry Grossnickle and Bruce Wakefield’s Garden CHEF DAVID MACHADO of LAURO KITCHEN presented our last dinner of the season on September 11th at the garden of JERRY GROSSNICKLE and BRUCE WAKEFIELD with garden TV and radio host ANNE JAEGER. Guests dined overlooking a terraced, twoacre, hillside garden with extensive perennial beds and borders and unusual trees and shrubs. Guests enjoyed the extensive gardens in a tour led by garden celebrity Anne Jaeger.
