A Community for a Peaceful World
Annual Report
2014-2015
Our vision is to cultivate learning communities in which each and every student, parent, and staff member
falls in love with learning, realizes their profound beauty, and lives with courage and authenticity.
Dear Friends, Parents, Donors, Faculty, Staff, Students,
Alumni, and Fellow Community Members—
During my first months at Khabele, I have witnessed many remarkable
moments of self-expression, unity, effort, and thoughtfulness. One of the
most moving came from a family (like mine) brand new to the school. One
afternoon, while house-hunting in Austin, they went to a park for a picnic
supper. They laid out their food and got comfortable when they noticed a
group of students playing nearby.
As they tell it, the group of kids behaved differently from others. While the
students were energetic and boisterous, they were also kind and inclusive.
The family continued to watch and, eventually, introduced themselves to
the students and asked where they attended school. "Khabele," they
responded. That's when this family knew that Khabele would be the right
choice for their son.
Like many of you and like this family, I knew early on that this was "our
school." One measure of a school's health is enrollment and admissions
interest. Another, as you'll see from our financial statements, is fiscal
health. I'm pleased to report that our fiscal health is good.
Thanks to the generosity of many community members and the disciplined
work of the board, administration, faculty, and staff, the school continues
to mature, and continues to inspire and care for the children who join us
each day.
Khabele is now in a position to think ahead. Imagining the school's future
is a great gift, a welcome opportunity, and a genuine responsibility. I hope
you'll find a way to participate in strategic planning this year.
I remain grateful for the faith and trust so many people have placed in the
school, and I am proud to have joined such a resilient and caring community.
Sincerely,
Letter from Our Head of School

This is my second year at Khabele. I feel very
lucky to be a part of a community where I have
such great opportunities to grow as an educator;
I learn a great deal from my highly talented
colleagues and I have a high level of autonomy
in what I teach and how I teach. I feel greatly
supported by my administration, appreciated by
the parents of my students, and respected by the
young mathematicians who walk into my
classroom everyday.
School Stories
Thom Gibson, Middle School Math Teacher
We feel so lucky to be a part of the Khabele community. When
looking for a school for Lily, we wanted a place where she would
be nurtured and her true self would be cherished and enhanced.
We found that at Khabele. Lily is in her second year in the
Roadrunner classroom, and we have watched her grow and learn
in the most fantastic ways. She comes home singing songs, talking
about her work, and sharing about her friendships. At drop-off and
pick-up, we get to chat with other classroom parents and engage in
the Khabele community. We cannot imagine a better or more
nurturing place for our child.

Elementary Campus
Enhancements
In September 2015 we opened our brand new 3000 square foot Elementary building, which houses
three classrooms. It was designed by Derrington Building Studio and built by American Constructors. A
new playground, sports field, and sport court were also added to the campus.
I was drawn to Khabele for many
reasons, but paramount among them was
the palpable sense of community I feel
every time I walk through the door. As a
teacher, I’m deeply grateful for the bonds
I’ve made with the children and families
I’ve been honored to serve, as well as for
the close connections I’ve made with my
incredibly gifted colleagues. As the parent
of a 4th grade Khabele student, I feel
blessed knowing that my precious child
walks into his classroom each day, feeling
honored and respected for who he is, but
simultaneously challenged to become the
best possible version of himself.
Ultimately, that's what I appreciate most
about Khabele. It’s a community that
lovingly supports all of its
members—children, parents and teachers
alike—on their journey toward becoming
their highest selves.
School Stories
Jennifer Giroux, Elementary Guide
I first heard about Khabele through a high school application
seminar at Breakthrough Austin. Breakthrough Austin is a
program that helps students become the first in their family to
graduate from college. Students apply as 6th graders, and
from there they help prepare students for college. That includes
applying to rigorous college preparatory high schools as an
8th grader. When I first heard about Khabele, I knew I wanted
to be part of the close-knit community that Khabele offers. My
gut also told me that it would provide the necessary tools to
further my education. As a low-income student in a
single-parent household, paying for private a high school was
not a possibility. But when I first visited Khabele, I knew this
was where I wanted to go. So I decided to apply, and luckily
got accepted with a great financial aid package.
I really enjoy the close knit community here. Khabele is a safe
learning environment where students can voice their opinions
without judgement, which really intrigued me. Also, being in a
small school has its perks. Things like knowing everybody's
name in school as well as being able to bond with teachers
helped create a great experience for me as a student.
School Stories
Jorge Delgadillo, Khabele Senior
Khabele has shaped my life in many different ways. The Five
Attributes have influenced the way I learn and approach new
lessons inside and outside of Khabele. Khabele has also
helped me realize what I would like to do for the rest of my
life: become a successful film director. After I graduate I plan
to get my Bachelor in Fine Arts and become the first person in
my family to graduate from college. After I graduate I hope to
become an innovative film director who has a positive impact
on my audience and who inspires them to think and become
better people.
We are happy to be in continued partnership with Breakthrough
Austin as part of our larger financial aid program.

Every day is a new beginning and the opportunity to create an
amazing life. Our community has the gift of people who believe in this,
allowing us to be fully impacted and inspired by the beauty and
growth of one another. You can see it in our administrators who
tirelessly hold the framework of our school's logistics and wellbeing; in
our teachers who creatively focus their minds and hearts to offer the
best to each individual child; in our parents who fiercely love their
children and offer a helping hand when needed in the community; and
most importantly, in the children who show up as their authentic selves
to guide us in fine-tuning our abilities to see all things with fresh eyes.

Getting Ananth enrolled at Khabele was one of the quickest decisions we have made for him. Looking back, it has
certainly been one of the best decisions too. Ananth's pre-school teacher strongly urged us to consider Khabele as
she felt it would suit his personality well. As parents we were drawn to the peaceful environment, positive, cheerful
and knowledgable staff, and the variety it had to offer to the inquisitive brain. After his initial class visit, getting
him to join Khabele felt like a complete no-brainer because Ananth felt so comfortable with Ms. Yvonne and Ms.
Jennie. Ananth is a pretty thoughtful child and the environment at Khabele suits him very well. In addition to a
strong academic curriculum, he is getting ample exposure to nature through on-campus gardening and field-trips.
Oh yes, thanks to his friends and physical education, he is also getting an ample doze of exposure to football too!
As parents, we found the teaching staff to be very experienced and very astute in judging the child's character
and personality traits. We have also found the Khabele community to be very close-knit and caring and we are
extremely grateful for all the support and care.

This has been a year of continued stability and strength for
our school, as we welcomed Ted Graf as our new Head of
School as well as four new Trustees to our board. After two
years of fairly intense transition, we are pleased to now be
able to focus more deeply on strengthening our foundation
and moving the school forward into a new era. We continue
our careful oversight of the school's healthy financials, and
we look forward to the strategic planning process that will
guide our our vibrant and thoughtful community as we
continue to define our priorities, passions, and purpose in
the coming years.
