a history of
fish creek
Officially established in 1857, early
settlers recognized the immense
potential of the Door County area
and took advantage of Fish Creek’s
ample water access and wooded
landscape.
In the mid 19th century, Asa Thorpe,
considered the village founder,
settled in a log cabin on Green Bay’s
shoreline. Thorpe purchased much
of the surrounding land, began a
lumbering business and constructed
the first pier on the waterfront.
Thorpe’s entrepreneurial spirit led
to the opening of a tourist hotel,
and soon visitors from across the
Midwest discovered for themselves
the beauty of Fish Creek.
Dr. Hermann Welcker, another
early Fish Creek resident, opened
a resort in the area modeled after
a European spa. The luxurious stay,
coupled with the breath-taking
natural appeal of Fish Creek, made
patrons long to return to the area. It
didn’t take long for seasonal visitors
to begin building their own homes
on Cottage Row.
Today, a leisurely walk down the
streets of Fish Creek allows guests

Door County Half Marathon, May 4
Hairpin Run, July 4
The entire course of this wildly popular half-marathon is set
on the traffic-free, paved surfaces of Peninsula State Park.
U.S. Track and Field certified, this race winds through the
park, giving runners breathtaking views of the water, shaded
areas through the woods, and challenging hills through one of
Wisconsin’s most beautiful parks. Nicolet Bay 5K also available.

Always held on 4th of July morning, the Hairpin Run is a fun and
festive 5K run/walk for all ages and abilities. The course begins
at the base of the Fish Creek bluff and winds back down through

Concerts in the Park,
mid-June—mid-August
Summer Festival & Fireworks, July 6
Each Tuesday during the heart of the summer, enjoy a free
concert featuring local and visiting talent in the quaint, shaded
setting of Fish Creek’s Noble Square. Visitors are welcome and
encouraged to bring their own blankets or chairs. Concerts run

On the first Saturday in July, Fish Creek hosts a traditional
Independence Day celebration at the picturesque setting of
Clark Park’s waterfront. Partake in old-time games for the kids, a
dunk tank, great live music, tasty summer treats and cold drinks.
The day is capped off with a spectacular fireworks display over
the bay.

Plein Air Festival, July 22-July 27
Nationally recognized artists from around the country will be
seen creating their paintings throughout Fish Creek. View their
work and interact with the artists as they capture the diverse
beauty of Door County. Hosted by the Peninsula School of Art in
Fish Creek, this is the largest outdoor painting festival of its kind
in the Midwest.
Inside/Outside Sale, September 27-29
This is the one weekend of the year Fish Creek retailers bring
special sale merchandise outside of their shops for unbeatable
end-of-season savings. Stroll the leaf swept sidewalks, grab a
bite to eat at one of Fish Creek’s many wonderful restaurants,
and enjoy the charming shops, galleries and boutiques
showcasing autumn sales both inside and out.
Jack O’ Lantern Days, October 24-27
Putting the “eek!” in Fish Creek, the town hosts a hometown
Halloween celebration. Little witches and goblins of all ages
will love the Haunting Halloween Parade, town-wide trick-ortreating, pumpkin carving and a Halloween Party at the Old
Town Hall. Adults will love the costume parties at night.

January 31-February 2, 2014
Fish Creek’s longest standing tradition, Winter Festival
continues to entertain locals and visitors the first weekend of
every February. Enjoy quirky games, music, food and a festive
atmosphere under the large heated tent overlooking the frozen
waters of Green Bay. Join in the human foosball tournament,
the chili cook-off, minnow racing, a bike toss, candlelight skiing,

FISH CREEK PARK
27 acre park with walking trails
through the woods to small ponds. Beautiful wooden gazebo for

FISH CREEK PUBLIC BEACH
As the only designated public swimming beach, this half-acre park
is a hot spot to be in the summer. Children can play on a small
jungle gym and enjoy making sandcastles in the sand. Port-apotties are open for use in the summer. Beach access is off Hwy.

LIGHTHOUSE ON CHAMBERS ISLAND
This historic lighthouse is an adventurous find as you must travel
by boat to the 2834-acre Chambers Island. The lighthouse sits
on 40 acres of rocky shoreline and woods. Tours are available by
special arrangement by contacting the Fish Creek Information
Center. Restrooms open when lighthouse is open.
NICOLET BAY BEACH
Located inside Peninsula State Park. Swim, play, rent watercraft,
concessions facilities.
NOBLE HOUSE SQUARE
This quaint shady square, less than an acre, is an oasis in this
bustling town. Like taking a step back in time you can see the
Noble house in it’s original glory as it was meticulously maintained
as the historic Noble House Museum. Every Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
you can gather for free Concerts in the Park. Restrooms available
in summer. Access on the corner of Highway 42 at the bottom of
the hill as the road turns northeast.
PENINSULA STATE PARK
The gateway to this 3.776-acre park is in downtown Fish Creek.
The park is noted for the 150-foot rocky bluffs that drop off into
the shores of Green Bay. Peninsula State Park is the most popular
camping destination in Wisconsin & boasts 468 campsites. Visitors
