Projects for 2016-17
In our last HURRAHS the message included
details of our Twentieth Parks and Recreation
Anniversary. There are other exciting plans on
the horizon that will be getting started during
the upcoming fiscal year.
Town staff will begin studying the details
involved in planning for a new convocation
center. This facility would be constructed to
provide gymnasium space for our overcrowded
basketball program and give staff the ability to
add new programs throughout the year. This
facility would also be used for large gatherings
of people such as banquets, conventions, shows
and other types of events, as well as provide
future office space.
Using Town staff, water and sewer will be made
accessible to The Sugg Farm at Bass Lake Park,
which will allow the eventual construction
of park restrooms and other buildings. The
Parks and Recreation staff is also working with
other Town staff to improve greenway and
sidewalk connectivity to residents west of the
NC55 By-pass. The current plan is to construct
greenways from the underpass to Avent Ferry
Road and also add to the Ballenridge greenway Town staff is working to improve greenway and
connecting to Ballentine Street resulting in sidewalk connectivity.
the ability for residents west of town to walk
downtown or to other shopping centers and neighborhoods. Finally, Sportsmanship Way will be
completed to the NC55 By-pass making access to the North Main Athletic Complex much improved
and provide better commuting for many residents.
In the previous paragraph, mentions have been made where Parks and Recreation staff are working
with other Town staff. One of the key components to making things happen in Holly Springs is the
ability and desire of Town staff to partner and work together on projects that otherwise may not be
possible. These include Public Works, Engineering, Planning, Code Enforcement, Public Affairs, IT,
Police, Fire, Water Quality, Economic Development and Administration. This unit, along with Town
Council make it possible For All The Ways You Play.

Cartooning
HUNT RECREATION CENTER
AGE: 6-13
This fall, we’ll “fall” topsy-turvy for our
cartoon lessons. Eating broccoli may not sound
appetizing to some, but in a Young Rembrandts
classroom, it’ll make for a fun and storied
drawing. The never ending rivalry rages on as
the cats and dogs go at it again in the month of
September. Develop a different and definitely
more expressive appreciation for vegetables
as we draw veggie expressions in October. In
November, weirder means better as we draw
unusual pets. We’ll draw these (and many more
exciting lessons) while we enhance the creative
and critical thinking skills today’s students need
— both, in the classroom and in the life-long
learning process. Enroll today!

with a cute bear dressed and ready for school,
a video game favorite pixel block character and
the geometrical world of architecture as we
draw the Notre Dame Cathedral. Later, students
will immerse themselves in the seasonal spirit
as they learn still life technique of pumpkins,
draw a detailed scarecrow and draw a silly but
challenging patterned bat. Finally, get ready
for winter as we turn out a “sweet” drawing of
a ginger bread house (almost good enough to
eat). We’ll draw these (and many more exciting
lessons) while we improve creative and critical
thinking skills today’s students need. So what are

Yoga has so many benefits. However, as parents
or caregivers we cannot always acquire childcare
to attend a fitness class. This class is designed
for students 16+ who can get up and down
from the mat without assistance. It is designed
so that the kids can stay with you in the class.
As parents or caregivers, those taking the class
will have an understanding that it may or may
not be the quietest environment during class. I
will have small toys for the children to play with
if they choose. Feel free to bring their favorites
as well. They are welcome to practice with you.
However, as a 200 Registered Yoga teacher and
Yoga Alliance instructor I will teach a full yoga
class despite any interruptions. These classes will
be in various styles including but not limited
to Vinyasa, Slowburn and Yin. As parents or
caregivers, we know this is part of our lives
and any opportunity to take a few moments for
ourselves will be rewarding. Please bring a mat if
you have one as there will be a limited number of

STUDENTS UNDER 15 MUST HAVE A PARENT PRESENT
DURING CLASS
Students learn the basics of modern sport
fencing and participate in friendly bouts. For
new students, emphasis is on learning the skills
needed to compete safely and successfully —
rules, footwork, attacks, and defenses — so
that they may participate in bouts as quickly
as possible. Experienced fencers welcome too!
All three sport fencing weapons (foil, epee,
and saber) are used, with instruction generally
focusing on one at a time. Class consists of
warmups, instruction, and drills, followed by
bouts. Students must provide or purchase their
own approved fencing equipment: mask, jacket,
glove, weapon, appropriate pants and footwear.

or even Inigo Montoya? Then perhaps you have
the desire to learn historic fencing. Using modern
fencing weapons, you will learn to fight in the
styles of rapier, cutlass, small sword, and military
sabre. Then, fight instructors and fellow students
in friendly bouts! Instruction is based upon
historical information and the sword instruction
manuals of the Renaissance, Enlightenment,
British army, and the US and British navies. For
safety, modern fencing equipment is utilized.

of barre and center work, guided movement
explorations, floor progressions, and short center
sequences.
