Dear Willowville Parents and Students,
Fall has arrived and finally brought some cooler weather! There are a few important things that I would like to inform
you of for the month of October. As I mentioned at Open House, the staff and I participated in A.L.I.C.E. training
which we will implement during our lockdown procedures. In October, we will describe a situation and have class
discussion around what we could do to remain safe. Additionally, we will use the read aloud book, “I’m Not Scared…I’m
Prepared,” by Julia Cook. I will provide more information on when we will practice our drill in my weekly Sunday Night
Call.
Walk-a-thon is Friday, October 3rd. This is our biggest fundraiser for the year and will determine the additional
programs and opportunities we will be able to offer to our students. Thank you in advance for your support of this and
the many fundraisers throughout the year. All students receive a t-shirt and will participate in a class picture along
with the walk around the school. Parents are welcome to walk with their child and join in the fun! Morning kindergarten
students may return to school with their parents around 2 pm to walk with their children. I promised the students that
ONLY if they raise $20,000 will we have “dress up” day on October 31 st.
On Wednesday, October 8th, our 3rd grade students will take the OAA Reading Test. This assessment is linked to
the 3rd grade Reading Guarantee. Please see the following link for more information: (http://education.ohio.gov/
Topics/Early-Learning/Third-Grade-Reading-Guarantee/Third-Grade-Reading-Guarantee-Family-Resources ).
Students will have two opportunities to meet the benchmark score of 394 in order to promote to 4th grade; fall 2014
and spring 2015. We will be sending a letter with more information to our 3 rd grade students. Thank you for your
support in reading with your child and encouraging them to do their best!
Karate Club Classes are October 21, 23, 28, and 30 at the Martial Arts America School on Glen Este
Withamsville Road. We will have a brief demonstration on October 13th and a flyer with information will be sent home.
Martial Arts America generously donates all proceeds back to the school.
The week of October 20th is our Fall Book Fair which includes a Night Fair/Grandparents Dinner on Wednesday,
October 22nd. All students will have the opportunity to visit the Book Fair during school. On Wednesday the 22 nd, your
child can invite their grandparents to our evening event. More information will be sent home during October. You will
also be able to order on-line. What a great gift idea since there is nothing more important than sitting with your child
and reading a good book!
A couple of weeks ago, the State released our Report Card. We were disappointed with some of our grades and have
made some changes in order to improve our efforts. We definitely cannot do it without your support. We appreciate
your efforts to read with your child each night, check their planner for assignments, read the weekly emails from the
teacher, check progress book and work on homework each night. Both our reading and math programs have helpful
websites. Please check your child’s planner for their login information or just ask them; almost all students have used
both websites.
One more reminder, if you are not receiving the weekly All-Calls or emails, please check the website and sign up for
e-Communication. Again, we appreciate working with you to ensure your child’s academic success!
Sincerely,
Michelle Kennedy
