Zucker NORT FALL A NETWORK & 20 FRESH LOCAL H UN ION FARM ERS M ARK E T www.northunionfarmersmarket.org OF ANNUAL GI 10 MARKETS ACROSS NORTHEAST OHIO V I NG LE T T E R 2015 YEARS & GROWING Inspired and encouraged! That's how we feel about the stories we hear at North Union Farmers Market – shoppers energized by year-round local foods …chefs jump-starting a career… market vendors launching a storefront business… single moms learning to create healthy meals with simple, fresh ingredients… and farmers sharing their expertise and saving their family farm. Finding Their Way: Young People Grow & Learn at Snake Hill Farm On a certified organic farm in a secluded valley of the Chagrin River in Geauga County, there’s a different sort of education going on. College students or recent graduates come to work, find their place in the world and consider what to do next with their lives. Most come with an interest in farming, eating healthy and earning some money – but at Snake Hill Farm L.P., they come away with much more. Over the past 20 years, Savery and Louis Rorimer have hired more than 50 folks, both young and old, to help on a farm that produces organic vegetables, beef and pure maple syrup." Some of the “interns” live in the 80 year-old home on the farm while others commute. They all help plant seeds, sift compost, lay mulch, pull weeds, harvest, go to market and whatever else needs done. But what they do more than anything – is learn. That’s because Savery loves to teach. She doesn’t set out to do it. She’s just wired that way. She was a dance teacher for many years and put that energy into running their farm with her husband (“He’s the boss. I pull weeds,” she says with a smile.) Savery is energized by being around young people who share the same passion for eating wholesome foods grown with organic matter and minerals. “It’s better for the brain,” says Savery. “You don’t get smart on Pop Tarts!” A fascinating group of young people have passed through Snake Hill Farm, soaking up respect for the earth, learning where food comes from and experiencing the hard work it demands to be a farmer. Savery sees a huge need for a new generation to rise up, since the average age of a farmer is 60, according to Joel Salatin, author of Fields of Farmers. Recalling some of her interns over the years – both men and women -- she thinks of Margaret, a gifted young woman who left Snake Hill to work on an organic spinach farm and help start up two small markets in rural New Mexico. Or Taylor, an art student at CIM who picked crops every Friday for six years. She moved to Vermont to learn organic cheese making and now has a job tracking seed production for High Mowing Organic Seeds. “I used to take her to farming conferences,” muses Savery, “She was so impressed that farmers share their secrets. She realized that farmers are really needed in this world.” “We’re all sustainable. One generation leaves, and the next one comes to take its place.” Snake Hill Farm sells their organic produce and beef at North Union Farmers Markets and to restaurants. They’re pleased to create jobs while teaching a new generation. “We’re all sustainable,” says Savery. “One generation leaves, and the next one comes to take its place.” YOU are an important piece of our pie! Dear Champions of Local Fresh Food, Life is full of surprises – and some are amazing! There we were feeling like it couldn’t get much better after celebrating North Union’s 20-year anniversary and becoming a strong 10-market certified producer-only system -- when a call came into our office. It was the USDA in Washington, DC asking us to meet with an Advance Team for the Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack. Wow. Out of 8,000+ farmers markets in the country, the Secretary of Agriculture chose to visit our market in honor of National Farmers Market Week. A week prior to the visit, his staff and secret service team met with us to learn more about our operation and to walk the site of our Saturday market at Shaker Square. Mr.Vilsack recognized the work we do and the success we have achieved. Many of our farms received USDA grants for “high tunnel farming” using plastic on tall arched hoops to create protective places for a longer growing season. Mr.Vilsack was very interested in seeing any impact and positive changes in these small farm operations. Yes, it’s been a good year… and a lot of hard work. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture,Tom Vilsack, visited our Shaker Square market during National Farmers Market Week. Here, he chats with Caleb Swope who works at his family’s Heritage Farm with parents Sarah and Kevin Swope. Recently graduated from Ag School, Caleb received a USDA grant for “high tunnel farming” and will eventually manage Heritage Farm. In 2015, we certified and trained many new farms: Quiroz Farm, Hawkeye Farm, Kai Cultured Mushroom, Forest Fungi Farm,Tombstone Farm, Hartzler Berry, Holmes County Garlic, and Pure Dawn Organic Farm. We were also pleased to see our anchor farms harvest successful peach crops and add varietals of produce to their tables. It’s so rewarding to see small farm businesses grow and bring new local foods to our markets! But what issue remains first in our heart? Providing access to those who most need healthy fresh foods. This year USDA is supporting our efforts through a grant specifically connecting folks who receive SNAP (food stamps) with fresh and local foods at farmers markets. Thank you for shopping at North Union Farmers Market – and for supporting our growth. For the 2016 market season, we have more big plans. We truly need your support to make them happen. We are 20 years and growing! With our Board of Directors and Staff, please join us with financial support to keep fresh, healthy, local foods accessible to all!
