In 1989, the development started as a small collection of houses. Today, El Gouna is the flagship destination of the Group, representing a community ranging between 18,000 – 22,000 permanent residents and visitors from all over the world. El Gouna has become a model for luxury resort destinations throughout the region and acts as the standard for all the Group's destinations. Keeping El Gouna as the model, the Group gradually started increasing its holdings. Currently, Orascom Development owns and manages four fully-integrated towns: our tourist destination El Gouna (Red Sea, Egypt), Taba Heights (Sinai Peninsula, Egypt), The Cove (Ras Al Khaimah, U.A.E.), and our budget housing community Haram City (Greater Cairo Area, Egypt), each with the complete infrastructure of a self-sufficient town. With several projects under development in Egypt and internationally, Orascom Development had to give this massive expansion and development a base that both compliments and nourishes its standing as an internationally renowned town builder, moving its headquarters to Switzerland in 2008. Since the creation of El Gouna, Orascom Development’s ideology has consistently revolved around the initiative of providing its customers with the full package. This is illustrated by the creation of an integrative community that incorporates all of the basic and leisurely facilities including residential properties, hotels, marinas, golf courses, beaches, sport facilities, and all essential amenities that make the town an exclusive entity of its own. Taking its ideology to heart, Orascom Development’s primary ambition is to expand around the world transforming virgin lands into eco-friendly living communities. Group History 1989 The beginning Samih Sawiris, founder and CEO of Orascom Development, begins the development of his dream to build a collection of houses on the serene coast of the Red Sea. A large plot of land is chosen, just north of the Egyptian town of Hurghada. 1991 Getting off the Ground The first phases of El Gouna become operational, and residents begin to move in. Although still small, this project demonstrates the official launch of the Group's flagship destination. 1997 Expanding Locally The Group's second destination, Taba Heights, is chosen to be on the Gulf of Aqaba at the eastern edge of the Sinai Peninsula; plans are approved and construction begins at the end of the year. 1998 Testing the Waters The Group signs an investment agreement with Jordan Projects & Touristic Developments to participate in the development of Tala Bay, one of the largest tourist projects ever undertaken in Jordan. 2004 Becoming International The Group's first community outside of Egypt, The Cove, is announced to be in Ras Al Khaimah, U.A.E. The project will house a hotel operated by Rotana, one of the region's top luxury hotel operators, real estate properties and complete town services. 2008 Group History 2006 Venture into Oman The Group signs the first cooperation agreement with the Omani Government, ushering forward the development of a total of four major projects in the country. Our budget housing project, Haram City in Cairo was also announced. A Global Corporation 2007 International Expansion Unfolds The Group signs the development agreement for Andermatt Swiss Alps, Switzerland and Chbika, Morocco. The Group moves its headquarters to Switzerland and successfully completes a dual listing on both the Swiss and Egyptian stock exchanges. Meanwhile, the first phase of Haram City is delivered to its owners, and the Group announces an additional project: El Roboue, in El Fayoum Oasis. 2009 expansion to ROMANIA, and Montenegro The Group initiates an affordable housing project in Constanta, Romania. Luštica Development, the Group's third integrated project in Europe and its first project on the Adriatic Sea, is set to become a fully-fledged destination in Montenegro. 2010 expansion to THE UK In accordance to UK certifications, the Group's new project in Cornwall, UK will be a fully-operational sustainable town. Corporate Social Responsibility Environment As global citizens, the Group is responsible for its activities as an international developer. It is imperative to ensure that the natural and cultural environments of all project destinations and investment locations are carefully preserved. Starting in 2002, in an aim to promote El Gouna as an environmentally friendly destination, the Green Gouna Initiative was launched. Since then, a vast number of environmental practices have been enacted to help preserve the local environment: Operational Destinations Orascom Development's corporate environmental goals aim to make our operating destinations low-waste communities through the following initiatives: Waste recycling plant Solid waste is sorted and used in recycling projects such as organic fertilizers/compost, plastic hangers and bricks. Water desalination Seawater is desalinated and used to supply the entire destination. The resulting highly concentrated water is then used in our lagoons with special fish species adapted to such an environment. Water management systems Sewage water is recycled and used for landscape and golf course irrigation systems. In El Gouna, the Group-owned sewage plant has a capacity of 5,700 m3 per day, treating not only wastewater from El Gouna but also around 8,000 m3 per day from nearby Hurghada. Around 15,000 m3 per day of the gray water from the sewage treatment plant is used to irrigate the extensive gardens of El Gouna and its golf course. In Taba Heights, two sewage treatment plants with a combined capacity of 2,000 m3 per day handle all the water and sewage needs of the resort. Planting projects The Group's local organic farm supplies destinations with fresh products to be used in restaurants. Green Star Hotel Initiative 3 Green Stars: 4 Green Stars: 5 Green Stars: In 2008, El Gouna was chosen for its dedication to environmental protection as the pilot destination for the Green Star Initiative, a partnership between Orascom Development, the German consulting firm AGEG Consultants and the German Technical Cooperation. Captain's Inn Dawar El Omda Turtle's Inn TTC Rihana ClubMed TTC Ocean View Arena Inn Sultan Bey Mövenpick Resort & Spa Sheraton Miramar Steigenberger Golf The first of its kind in Egypt, the Green Star Initiative is working together with hotel operators, destination management teams, as well as the Egyptian and German governments to create a comprehensive set of environmental standards that can be applied to hotels throughout the country. Holding its first international conference in El Gouna in the end of 2008, the Green Star Initiative brought together environmental and business specialists from Egypt and beyond to discuss appropriate criteria and solutions to create a system of Green Stars. Ranging from one to five Green Stars, hotels in Egypt can now be accurately measured as to their local environmental friendliness. International Awards El Gouna served as the pilot project for this initiative and as a result 11 of the town's hotels were awarded the Green Star Hotel eco-label. Additionally, in recognition of the success of the environmental hotel certification project, the German Travel Association DRV (Deutscher Reiseverband) awarded El Gouna with the DRV Environmental Certificate of Excellence 2009 for the Green Star Hotel Initiative. Hotels throughout El Gouna have been awarded Green Globe certificates by Green Globe International, a non-profit organization that promotes environmentally and socially responsible tourism, including: • • • • • Mövenpick Resort & Spa Sheraton Miramar Resort Steigenberger Golf Resort ClubMed Village El Gouna Panorama Bungalows Resort Destinations Under Construction Destinations in the Pipeline Because we believe in developing environmentally friendly destinations, during the planning phase, we conduct an EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) to evaluate the impact a new project may have on the area’s environment, covering natural, social and economic aspects. Eco-Bos, Cornwall will include more than 5,000 homes intended to have sustainability standards significantly higher than existing towns and cities. Key features of the United Kingdom’s sustainable town proposals include: In Oman, namely in Jebel Sifah, Salalah Beach, and As Sodah Island, the Group has a dedicated HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) teams at both the corporate and on-site levels. The aim is to monitor the construction process to comply with Omani regulations. It is worth mentioning that the Group preferred to develop an in-land marina rather than reclaim sea area so as to avoid disrupting the shoreline and natural inhabitants, including marine life and coral reefs. • Achieve zero-carbon across the sustainable town • 40% of land allocated for green space • Between 30% and 50% affordable housing with a good mix of tenure and house sizes • More sustainable transportation, reducing car reliance and encouraging walking, cycling and public transport • Good quality business space offering one job opportunity per household • Average distance between homes and frequent public transport or neighborhood services should be 10 minute walk • Robust management and delivery strategy to support new communities longer term The Group’s project in Andermatt Swiss Alps is designed in accordance to the highest ecological standards in the construction industry. Furthermore, our team works closely with local NGO’s such as Mountain Wilderness, Pro Natura Uri, Switzerland’s Traffic Club (VCS) and the World Wildlife Foundation to preserve rivers, water surfaces and natural habitats. Also, we plan to use a carbon-free energy supply system for the entire destination by using renewable energy sources. The planned parking lot will offer capacity for approximately 1,970 cars parked below the podium, creating an almost car-free destination where residents and guests primarily commute via dedicated pedestrian zones. Sponsorship Sawiris Foundation for Social Development The Group actively contributes to charity and social development projects. One of the largest contributing entities is the Sawiris Foundation, which has funded over 90 small and medium enterprises throughout Egypt. The Foundation operates in all sectors of Egyptian society, providing over 26,000 jobs for underprivilaged individuals, including those who have received micro-loans totaling almost exceeding CHF 36 million. In addition to funding projects for the nation’s underprivileged, there are currently multiple active programs providing training for nurses in state hospitals, training home healthcare workers to visit the elderly, and training education specialists to cater to the growing needs of Egypt’s student population. To support Egypt’s future, the foundation also has provided 176 scholarships for talented Egyptian students to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK, USA, Germany and Egypt and has additionally handed out 24 awards honoring local literary and film works reaching up to CHF 20,000. Human Trafficking The issue of Human Trafficking is a world-wide dilemma that has escalated over the years. Figures for human trafficking around the world, be it of women, children, or young men, is highly alarming. According to the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN GIFT), 1.2 million children are traffick every year, with an average of 36,000 persons trafficked on a daily basis. More than CHF 34 billion of illegal profits are made from human trafficking per annum. The Group was motivated to support this cause by contributing approximately CHF 535,000 to fund the UN project’s communication’s plan in collaboration with top media partners. Welfare of Society At Orascom Development, we aim to develop sustainable communities; therefore, it is essential that local communities feel integrated in our projects. We believe in the importance of maximizing local culture, resources, and knowledge. In the construction phase of our projects, we typically hire manpower from the local community and later encourage locals to operate small businesses in the destination. In Jebel Sifah (Oman), the Group will build an international hotel school to graduate the next generations of Omani hoteliers. At Salalah Beach (Oman), the Group has entered into a social development program with the Omani Ministry of Tourism to enhance the living standards of local elderly and underprivileged by providing monthly donations. The Group is also partnering with the Omani Ministry of Agriculture in several essential local industries to create more jobs and improve the micro-economy in the immediate area. With regards to the Group’s affordable housing project, Haram City (Egypt), we have executed the following: • Created a rehabilitation center for street children that provides accommodation and vocational training. The center also serves as a point of sales outlet for products handcrafted by the older children • Offered units to single mothers at a subsidized rental rate. These mothers receive paid training in an embroidery workshop within the community, the local primary school and the recycling facility onsite. These training opportunities potentially lead to full time employment. • Offered subsidized rent for commercial activities undertaken by residents who were victims of the 2008 rock slide disaster (approximately 1,000 Egyptians) and have been hosted in Haram City since the event. Individuals who had lost their homes and livelihood in that disaster were also offered jobs in construction activities. Local Impact To ensure that the Group has a positive impact on its communities, great measures have been taken to blend in with the local culture and initiate projects to improve the living standards and welfare of local populations. In El Gouna, for example, the local Nubian architecture was taken and incorporated into the destination; while in Taba Heights local Bedouins (the traditional tribes of the Sinai) were employed to work and live in the destination, where they are encouraged to present their culture to visitors. Employees With 18,481 employees, the Group is backed with a strong support system that has long been one of the key drivers of its success. At Orascom Development, we fully support our 18,481 employees to grow as individuals. Our focus on staff training and development is critical to our philosophy of offering employees development opportunities and also serves to maintain the competitive edge of our team. The Group aims to create a positive environment where employees can reach their potential both personally and professionally. Individual growth takes place on three levels: • Current job growth: is increased ability in the existing job, including both general knowledge and functional competence. • Career growth: is development that aims to maximize an individual’s future career prospects within the Group. • Personal growth: is growth that enables employees to capitalize on personal strengths. For example, employees may wish to attend programs or events to improve teamwork or interpersonal skills. The Group strongly believes in the added value of diversification. Orascom Development employees’ demographical pool includes 33 nationalities and an age range from 20 to 60 years of age. Our employees are a true reflection of the Group’s international presence. Orascom Development is proud to employ a minimum monthly wage that is higher than required by each country’s Labor Law. In Egypt, for example, our minimum wage is nearly 2.5 times higher than that required by Egyptian law. Through consistent staff training, and housing for a large number of employees and their families, the Group ensures that Orascom employees are well taken care of. What is Egypt without the glory of the Ancient Egyptians, the pristine coastal shores of the Red Sea, and the beauty of the Nile Valley?
