■A Happy New Year to One and All!
In February, Japan International Broadcasting, JIB, will celebrate the
fourth anniversary of the start of its broadcasting. Previously,
international television from Japan was provided by the country's public
broadcaster, NHK. JIB was incorporated jointly by NHK and a number of
private-sector companies to meet rising calls for expanded global access
to programming produced in Japan. Since its establishment, JIB has
been developing its worldwide network, producing and offering
television programs in English as a private-sector broadcaster
specializing in international services.
One example is “FORWARD,” a series of 42 programs reporting on people’s reconstruction
efforts after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. The series, broadcast in 2012, was made
with the cooperation of commercial broadcasters and TV production companies around the
country. Each episode showed the world a different aspect of people in the disaster-stricken
areas coping with difficulties and working to restore their way of life: among them, children living
with their chins up and farmers struggling to grow vegetables amid worries of radioactive
contamination. The programs were well-received. Some were subtitled in Chinese, Arabic, and
Spanish, allowing for wider viewership.
This year, JIB will continue to produce programs of excellence to report on Japan as it is today.
We do so with the cooperation of program sponsors and shareholding companies, determined to
make Japan’s international television broadcasting even more informative and entertaining.
JIB is also planning to enhance its information transmission around the world through the
internet in 2013. One element is the internet radio site, “Enjoy Network Japan.” The service
began on an experimental basis last November. This year, it goes into full operation, streaming
a wide range of music from Japan. We also will keep refining the JIB website to make it even
richer in content. And we will seek ways to add value by closely linking television broadcasting
and internet services.
All of us working for JIB will do our best to bring Japan to the world
through an array of programs and platforms. We look forward to your
ongoing guidance and support. May 2013 be a good year for all.
Jun Kawakami
JIB President and CEO

■NHK WORLD/jibtv joins Nova in Greece
NHK WORLD/jibtv has formed a partnership with Nova, the first digital, satellite Pay TV
platform in Greece. Nova is part of the Forthnet Group, the largest privately owned group
of companies providing broadband and pay TV services to households in the territories of
Greece and Cyprus. NHK WORLD’s programming from Japan and Asia offers more
choices to Greek viewers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Thanks to this tie-up, more
than 350,000 households in Greece and Cyprus can now watch NHK WORLD/jibtv.
■Message from Nova
“We are delighted that the NHK channel is joining Nova.
NHK WORLD TV is a major international channel
introducing the Japanese and Asian culture to global
audiences with remarkable talent and proficiency. The
influence of Japan worldwide nowadays is considerable in
matters as diverse as business & technology, fashion &

entertainment and therefore we strongly believe the
addition of NHK World TV in the Nova bouquet substantially
enhances the breadth of choice for Greek viewers”.
■ HD+ Brings Japan to Germany
More than 2.8 million German households subscribing to the HD+ service are able to
watch NHK WORLD/jibtv. The programming can be found on each set-top box with the
HD+ label on channel number 927. The availability results from NHK WORLD/jibtv’s
ongoing relationship with HD PLUS GmbH, which runs the HD+ platform, and its parent
company SES, the global satellite operator.
The German market is rapidly shifting from SD to the HD format and 4k in the near
future. That evolution has led NHK WORLD/jibtv to focus its attention on HD distribution
there.

Coexistence for East Asia
East Asia has encountered a number of major natural disasters
in recent years, among them the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the
Northern Sumatra Earthquake, the Sichuan Earthquake, and the
Great East Japan Earthquake. One of the cities that suffered
major damage in the East Japan quake, Sendai, was the site of
the East Asia Kyousei Forum, December 15-16, 2012.
The Forum provided the basis of two programs for broadcast in
January. Topics included the role of culture and the arts in healing emotional wounds and
restoring optimism. Participants also considered how recollections and evidence of disaster
conditions should be preserved, in order for the lessons to be shared in other places and
across generations.
