The newsletter of Smith Drug Company A Division of j M Smith Corporation Spartanburg, SC Paragould, AR Valdosta, GA April 2013 First in Service. First in Commitment. 135 Years of Fun On Monday April 1, 2013, the First Family will host the 135th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This year, more than 35,000 people will be on the South Lawn for games, stories, and, of course, the traditional egg roll. In addition to all the fun and games, the day's activities — which will include sports courts and cooking demonstrations — will help educate families on smart ways to incorporate healthy eating and exercise choices into their daily routines, which are key pillars of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative. White House Keepsake Eggs The 2013 souvenir eggs come in four bold colors — purple, blue, yellow, pink — and include the stamped signatures of the President and First Lady. A commemorative teal “Bo” egg featuring the First Dog’s paw print is included only in the 2013 5-pack Collector’s Egg Set. April is National Occupational Therapy Month. To recognize and show appreciation to therapy professionals. Understanding Occupational therapy An occupational therapist is a health professional with at least a 4-year college degree that specializes in evaluation and treatment of people with limited functional independence. Recovery after an injury to your hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder can be difficult. An occupational therapist can help you return to your work, sporting and home activities. After receiving your doctor's order, the occupational therapist will complete a comprehensive evaluation of your condition. He or she will then develop a unique, individual treatment program and provide education about preventing a recurrence of the injury or condition. There are about 103,000 occupational therapists in the U.S. Salaries vary with industry and geographical location but run from $24 an hour to $80 in specialized fields. table of Contents April 2013 The newsletter of Smith Drug Company A Division of J M Smith Corporation Spartanburg, SC - Paragould, AR - Valdosta, GA • HealthWise™ Circular Program • DollarWise™ Program • Good Sense® Controlled Label Program • Greeting Cards Program • Continuing Education • Gift and Trade Show • Rx QuikShip™ • GeneRx QuikShip™ • Third Party Station • Pharmacy First • DrugSmith™ Monthly Newsletter • Smith Weekly e-Blast • • Diabeticare™ Program (Medicare Vendor Contracts) • Perfect for Profit Catalog • Hamacher Retail Zone Pricing • Home Health Care Catalog • HealthWise Signage Program • Smith Gift Box Gift Category • Vials and Vitamin Program • Direct Mail Advertising • Well Staffed Customer Service • Excellent Service Levels • Store Fixture Program • Merchandising Services 9098 Fairforest Road Spartanburg, SC 29301 (800) 572-1216 this month 135 years of Fun White House Easter Egg Roll (2) Industry News (4-5) Drugs.com Releases Q4 Sales For Top 100 US Drugs (6) Congress Approves New Tool to Combat Violent Rx Drug Robberies (8) Retail Loss Prevention Research Reveals Changing Practices (9) OTC Products Now Available (10-14) CE & Trade Show Information (15-16) Register Online http://www.smithdrug.com/events/2013-customer/ 1104 Jones Road Paragould, AR 72450 (866) 346-9147 4 1500 Commerce Drive Valdosta, GA 31601 (800) 572-1216 Teva Gets FDA Approval for Generic ADHD Drug From Associated Press (February 14, 2013) NEW YORK -- Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. said Thursday that it received marketing approval for a generic version of Shire PLC’s Adderall XR, a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The Food and Drug Administration approved Teva’s generic in six strengths from 5 milligrams to 30 milligrams. Teva sells an authorized version of the drug supplied by Shire and is not launching sales of its own generic right now. The product supply agreement between the companies ends April 1, 2014. Teva said U.S. sales of the brand-name version and generic versions of Adderall XR totaled $2 billion in 2012. Teva has been selling an authorized generic version of the drug since April 2009 as part of an agreement with Shire. The agreement resolved a patent infringement lawsuit between the companies. Impax Laboratories Inc. began selling an authorized generic version of the drug in October 2009. Actavis Inc. launched its own version in June, further cutting the price. Retail Customer Service Have Them at Hello and Goodbye Whether you have a store of any kind, a beauty salon or a restaurant, the advice of customer service advisors Michael Landau and Allison Webb is worth considering * Hire the right employees. They should have a pleasant disposition and like people. * When you think about your level of customer service, ask yourself, will they come back and will they refer you to prospective customers? * First impressions are important. Greet customers with a smile as they enter the store. Ask what they’re interested in today and guide them to it. Shire, which reported its fourth-quarter results Thursday, said it gets "insignificant" income from its deal with Teva. * Make a great effort to solve any problem a customer has. Offer more solutions or alternatives than your competitors do. Adderall XR, an extended-release version of an older ADHD drug called Adderall, was once Shire’s biggest selling product, bringing the company $1.1 billion in revenue in 2008. Sales have fallen because of the introduction of the lower-priced generic versions. Shire’s current top product is Vyvanse, a newer ADHD drug that still has patent protection source: www.drugs.com■ * Have them at goodbye. Don’t just ring up the sale and say thank you. Walk them to the door and say you look forward to seeing them again. Make sure the last contact with you is the signing of the bill. Monster Beverage Corp. Will Add Caffeine Content to Energy Drink Labels Monster Beverage Corp. says it is revising product labeling so that its energy drinks are no longer classified as dietary supplements, and the new labeling will include information on the drinks’ caffeine content. The new labeling is required by U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines for traditional drink products. The move comes as energy drink makers face increasing pressure to alert consumers to possible dangers of overconsumption of caffeine, CBS/Associated Press reported. Lawmakers have pressed the FDA to examine the safety of caffeine levels in energy drinks. Monster’s CEO told industry tracker Beverage Digest that product labeling for its energy drinks will switch from “Supplement Facts” to “Nutrition Facts,” CBS/AP said. Manufacturers of such drinks are currently allowed to categorize them as either a dietary supplement or a traditional drink. Once a product is classified as a traditional drink, companies are then restricted to using ingredients that are approved food additives or “generally recognized as safe,” Elizabeth Campbell, a senior adviser at EAS Consulting Group, specialists in FDA affairs, told CBS/AP. Accurate label information on energy drinks’ caffeine content is thought to be important to safeguard consumers’ health. A recent Consumer Reports investigation found that caffeine levels varied widely from brand to brand, leaving consumers with little guidance on whether they were drinking more caffeine than was good for them. In October 2012, the FDA investigated five deaths and one heart attack linked to Monster Energy Drinks dating back to 2004, CBS/AP reported.■ 4 More Fun is on he Menu for the 60+ Set Whether you're retired or just thinking about it, it's time to consider some active pursuits to keep healthy and happy. Travel is great but, in the days between trips, active seniors want to keep the good times rolling. A full and independent life demands activities for the body, mind and spirit. Silver Sneakers is a program that offers Medicare-eligible adults free or low-cost memberships at participating fitness centers. Their programs include fitness classes, social gatherings and health seminars. Walking and biking are happy choices now that communities have walking paths and bikeways. Check out some of the roadworthy recumbent bikes, that put the rider in a reclining position, instead of perched on a tiny, uncomfortable seat. Geocaching can make your walks more interesting and you can find clubs of people who look for hidden caches. See geocaching.com If walking bores you but you love the water, boating is a good way to have fun outdoors. You don't have to buy a boat. You can rent a canoe or kayak that includes everything you need. Spending time at the pool is enjoyable whether you swim like a fish, or just paddle around. Since it's not weightbearing exercise, it's good for people with arthritis. Or you can just socialize. There are senior sports leagues at many parks and rec centers. You can play softball, tennis, badminton or croquet. If you don't know how to golf, now's the time to learn. Golf is a great way to exercise, enjoy the beauty of nature, and make friends. Report: Tracking System Needed to Fight Fake Drugs From Associated Press (February 13, 2013) WASHINGTON -- Fighting the problem of fake drugs will require putting medications through a chain of custody like U.S. courts require for evidence in a trial, the Institute of Medicine reported Wednesday. The call for a national drug tracking system comes a week after the Food and Drug Administration warned doctors, for the third time in about a year, that it discovered a counterfeit batch of the cancer drug Avastin that lacked the real tumor-killing ingredient. Fake and substandard drugs have become an increasing concern as U.S. pharmaceutical companies move more of their manufacturing overseas. The risk made headlines in 2008 when U.S. patients died from a contaminated blood thinner imported from China. The Institute of Medicine report made clear that this is a global problem that requires an international response, with developing countries especially at risk from phony medications. Drug-resistant tuberculosis, for example, is fueled in part by watered-down medications sold in many poor countries. "There can be nothing worse than for a patient to take a medication that either doesn’t work or poisons the patient," said Lawrence O. Gostin, a professor of health law at Georgetown University who led the IOM committee that studied how to combat the growing problem. A mandatory drug-tracking system could use some form of barcodes or electronic tags to verify that a medication and the ingredients used to make it are authentic at every step, from the manufacturing of the active ingredient all the way to the pharmacy, he said. His committee examined fakes so sophisticated that health experts couldn’t tell the difference between the packaging of the FDA-approved product and the look-alike. "It’s unreliable unless you know where it’s been and can secure each point in the supply chain," Gostin said. Patient safety advocates have pushed for that kind of tracking system for years, but attempts to include it in FDA drug-safety legislation last summer failed. www.drugs.com■ Department of Health: Consider Organ Donation The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services wants to remind you to consider organ and tissue donation and to specify that approval on your driver’s license. The department sets aside time in April to publicize organ donation. Part of that effort is the Flags Across America initiative. The flags honor and celebrate the hundreds of thousands of donors and recipients whose lives have been affected by organ, eye and tissue donation. The flag initiative rallies donor hospitals and transplant centers to fly the Donate Life flag beneath the American flag during April. Every year, individuals also choose to fly Donate Life flags at their homes or places of business. 5 Drugs.com Releases Q4 Sales for Top 100 U.S. Drugs Drugs.com, the leading online clinical drug resource, released fourth quarter 2012 U.S. prescription sales data for the top 100 drugs. At the close of 2012, Otsuka’s antipsychotic Abilify overtakes AstraZeneca’s acid reducer Nexium and moves into the number one spot with over $1.47 billion in quarterly sales. Sales expanded for all five front-runners over the quarter, although none reached double-digit growth. There are no changes in the top selling pharmaceutical classes, which include antipsychotics, proton pump inhibitors, and statins. Neulasta, Incivek and Avonex also report declining sales of $20 to $30 million. “The top five brands maintained their leading positions in the last quarter of 2012.” said Philip Thornton, CEO of Drugs.com. “Fewer blockbuster brands lost exclusivity, however 2013 will bring a new round of generic competition highlighted by the expected Cymbalta patent loss later this year.” Zomig and Aciphex are additional top-selling brands expected to lose patent protection in 2013. 6 7 GET AHEAD BY STAYING SHARP RESTING THE BRAIN MORE IMPORTANT THAN RESTING THE BODY Congress Approves New Tool to Combat Violent Prescription Drug Robberies More than 70 percent of American adults and 85 percent of teens don’t get enough sleep to be sharp the next day, according to scientists at Harvard Medical School. They say part of the problem is we are so used to being sleep deprived that we have become adept at coping with the condition. We don’t realize that the purpose of sleep may be more to rest the mind than to rest the body. Sleep helps consolidate memory, improve judgment, promote learning and concentration, boost mood, speed reaction time, and sharpen problem solving and accuracy. To get more sleep, researchers suggest getting to bed half an hour earlier. If you can arrange a brief nap in the afternoon, it can help. They advise against sleeping late on weekends because it could disrupt your circadian rhythm, making it harder later to get a full night’s rest. The American Time Use survey shows that the main reason for lost sleep is work. But when you lose sleep, you could be 12 percent less productive the next day. If mental sharpness is important to you, get a good night’s sleep. By: Aaron Dickens A new tool approved by Congress looks to combat violent prescription drug robberies across the city. Senator Chuck Schumer announced Friday the creation of a new database that will be used to help determine trends and patterns of prescription drug-related crimes. The database will help law enforcement agencies identify pharmacy security gaps and analyze emerging crime patterns. “Law enforcement’s able to map crime patterns,” said Chauncey Parker, the director of New York/New Jersey High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas. “They can say, ‘I want to look at all robberies of oxycodone in the last 90 days in the New York metropolitan, and you press a button and a map shows up.” “It will look for specifics on what types of crimes are being committed, who’s committing them, how they are being committed, and find patterns,” Schumer said. “Then, you can send police officers to those areas.” The database will help officials target resources to high crime areas and determine which prescription drugs are the most sought after. Schumer’s office says oxycodone and hydrocodone products dominated the targeted pills in 2012. 8 Retail Loss Prevention Research Reveals Changing Practices; Six Million Thieves Apprehended Annually Is Tip of Iceberg Report Analyzing Global Retail Crime Available via Free Download From Checkpoint Systems LONDON & THOROFARE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new report that analyzes global retail crime and loss prevention (LP) trends since 2001 has found, among various areas researched, that the number of retail thieves apprehended annually continues to be about six million, and this is just the very tip of the iceberg. More than 78% of shrink is due to shoplifting by dishonest customers or retail employees. New products in fast-paced categories such as electronics, perfumes and sportswear being brought to market every year at premium prices are among the most likely to be stolen. Fresh meat remains a high-theft category for supermarkets and hypermarkets. “In this ever changing environment, we are pleased to support the global retail community with research that offers benchmarks and practical insights with the objective to help retailers improve their merchandise availability and grow sales profitably.” .Retailers have, however, taken action in recent years. Of the 50 most stolen products, the number of items protected from theft has increased from 60% in 2007 to 75% in 2011 with EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) source tagging and special high-theft solutions implemented by more retailers each year. More than 86% of the LP professionals surveyed saw inventory management and/or loss prevention as primary drivers to implement RFID (Radio Frequency identification). The report also points out that the role of LP departments is evolving to increasingly provide a strategic service to the other areas of the business. Online retailing and new payment systems such as smart-phones bring new risks to the industry, meaning that LP professionals would benefit from working closely with IT, store operations and marketing in the fight against crime. The report notes that this collaboration draws on joint methods for analyzing shrink while data obtained from electronic surveillance and RFID solutions is often used to make improvements in marketing, operations and logistics. While the report points out the clear correlation between loss prevention spending and lower shrink, the length and depth of the global recession has resulted in increased rates of shrink since 2007. The report, produced by the Centre for Retail Research, includes recommendations for the retail industry. The report is available via free download from Checkpoint Systems. “Changing Retail, Changing Loss Prevention” analyzes the evolution of retail crime and loss prevention uncovered by the “Global Retail Theft Barometer” publications since 2001. Per Levin, president, Shrink Management and Merchandise Visibility Solutions, Checkpoint Systems, said, “In this ever changing environment, we are pleased to support the global retail community with research that offers benchmarks and practical insights with the objective to help retailers improve their merchandise availability and grow sales profitably.” source: business wire. 9 Item # Description 293464 CLARITIN AL 12HR 5MG REDITAB PACK CODE 1X30 TBD 80521 295303 291088 CLARITIN AL 12HR 5MG REDITAB 1X10 TB 80531 CLARITIN AL PED 12HR REDITAB 1X10 TBD 80554 117762 CLARITIN ALLERGY REDITAB OTC 1X10 TBD 80602 301374 CLARITIN ALLERGY REDITAB OTC 1X30 TBD 80604 112789 CLARITIN ALLERGY TAB OTC 1X5 TAB 8022 113852 CLARITIN ALLERGY TAB OTC 1X10 TAB 8016 116244 CLARITIN ALLERGY TAB OTC 1X20 TAB 8018 206151 CLARITIN ALLERGY TAB OTC 1X30 TAB 80247 061887 CLARITIN ALRGY 24HR 10MG TAB 1X45 TAB 80614 112821 CLARITIN CHILD CHEWTAB 5MG 1X20 CHE 80657 343822 CLARITIN CHILD CHEWTAB 5MG 1X10 TB CHE 82067-0 224790 CLARITIN CHILD REDITAB ALRGY 1X10 TB 80606 206730 CLARITIN CHILD SYR GRAPE 2OZ 1X60 ML SYR 80463 208637 CLARITIN CHILD SYR GRAPE 4OZ 1X120 ML SYR 80465 163378 CLARITIN NON-DROS LIQUI-GELS 1X10 CAP 80610 167668 CLARITIN NON-DROS LIQUI-GELS D 1X24 CAP 80701 211656 CLARITIN-D ALL/CONG 12HR OTC 1X30 TB1 80780 441428 CLARITIN-D ALL/CONG 12HR OTC 1X10 TB1 80784 371070 CLARITIN-D ALL/CONG 12HR TAB 1X20 TB1 80782 118596 CLARITIN-D ALL/CONG 24HR OTC 1X10 TB2 80776 214189 CLARITIN-D ALL/CONG 24HR OTC 1X15 TB2 80774 Get powerful, non-drowsy, relief from your worst allergy symptoms.
