Xavier Maruyama - by Taum Del’Armo “Escape from Manchuria” The Amazing saga - “Escape from Manchuria” In the closing days of WWII, the Soviet Union attacked and occupied Japanesecontrolled northern China, then called Manchuria. Immediately, misery and death from cold, hunger, disease, and brutality descended upon the Japanese civilians at the hands of the Soviet Army and revenge-seeking mobs and bandits. Nearly 2,500 Japanese died daily. Three courageous men embarked on a secret mission and escaped to Japan to eventually bring an end to the Manchurian nightmare. In the riveting story, Escape from Manchuria, the son of one of the three courageous men narrates for the Western readers a compelling tale of the rescue and repatriation of nearly 1.7 million Japanese that began almost a year after the surrender of Japan. We are fortunate to have Xavier Maruyama as our July speaker. He is a retired physics professor from NPS. His next older brother, Paul K. Maruyama, who was a career U.S.military person, wrote the book, Escape from Manchuria. Xavier Maruyama helped his brother Paul with the book. PREVIEW - AUGUST’S PROGRAM Alan Kemp - History of Maritime Influence on California Missions The proposed canonization of Father Junípero Serra has brought the California Missions into the headlines. With an oversimplified media focus on FranciscanIndian relations, the important historical context in which the missions were established has been virtually ignored. Retired engineer and Stillwater Club member Alan Kemp will present a maritime perspective on Father Serra’s mission system, highlighting the roles of both Spanish and Indian mariners in laying the foundations for the successful establishment of the missions and positive Franciscan-Indian relations. Since his retirement, Alan has applied his research and analysis skills to California’s colonial maritime history. He has published numerous journal articles and was featured in Serra, Ever Forward Never Back, a television series on the life of Junípero Serra. THE ROUNDABOUT ON HOLMAN HIGHWAY, by Don Eastman Wherever on the Monterey Peninsula they reside, each and every Stillwater Club member will be impacted by the traffic confusion emanating from the construction of the Holman Highway Roundabout that is slated to start in March, 2016 and last for several months. Members who live in Pebble Beach and Monterey have had access through various organizations including the Del Monte Forest Property Owners to information about plans for the roundabout. Members who live in Carmel Valley, Pacific Grove, Carmel and locations that are more distant from the intersection of Highway 1 and west-bound Highway 68 may not have had such information. Therefore, the Stillwater Club Board of Directors decided at the June meeting that links to on-line videos and other information about the Roundabout should be placed in the July issue of the WAVE. Below is information leading to two links where information, including descriptive videos can be found. The first link is to the web-site for the Traffic Agency of Monterey County (TAMC). The second link is to the web-site for the City of Monterey. Both links contain information about work-shops, seminars and other community based meetings that are being hosted on an on-going basis to communicate in advance about the traffic interruptions that will take place when the Roundabout is under construction. He sees a most beautiful woman heading straight towards his seat. A wave of nervous anticipation washes over him. Lo & behold, she takes the seat right beside him. Eager to strike up a conversation, he blurts out, "Business trip or vacation?" She turns, smiles & says, "Business. I'm going to the annual Nymphomaniac convention in Chicago." He swallows hard & is instantly CRAZED with excitement. Here's the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen, sitting right next to him, & she's going to a meeting of nymphomaniacs! Struggling to maintain his cool, he asks, "What's your business role at this convention?" "Lecturer," she says, "I use my experiences to debunk some of the popular myths about sexuality." "Really," he says, swallowing hard, "what myths are those?" "Well," she explains," one popular myth is that African American men are the most well endowed, when, in fact, it is the Native American Indian man who is most likely to posses that trait. Another popular myth is that French men are the best lovers, when actually, it is men of Jewish descent." Suddenly, the woman becomes very embarrassed & blushes. "I'm sorry," she says. "I shouldn't be discussing this with you, I don't even know your name!" "Tonto," he says. "Tonto Goldstein."
