“Escape from Manchuria”
The Amazing saga - “Escape from Manchuria”
In the closing days of WWII, the Soviet
Union attacked and occupied Japanesecontrolled northern China, then called Manchuria. Immediately, misery and death from cold,
hunger, disease, and brutality descended upon
the Japanese civilians at the hands of the Soviet
Army and revenge-seeking
mobs and bandits. Nearly
2,500 Japanese died daily.
Three courageous men
embarked on a secret mission and escaped to Japan
to eventually bring an end
to the Manchurian nightmare. In the riveting story,
Escape from Manchuria, the
son of one of the three courageous men narrates for
the Western readers a compelling tale of the rescue
and repatriation of nearly
1.7 million Japanese that
began almost a year after
the surrender of Japan.
We are fortunate to
have Xavier Maruyama as our July speaker. He
is a retired physics professor from NPS. His next
older brother, Paul K. Maruyama, who was a
career U.S.military person, wrote the book,
Escape from Manchuria. Xavier Maruyama
helped his brother Paul with the book.
PREVIEW - AUGUST’S PROGRAM
Alan Kemp - History of Maritime Influence on California Missions
The proposed canonization of
Father
Junípero
Serra has
brought the
California
Missions into
the headlines. With
an oversimplified media focus on FranciscanIndian relations, the important historical context in
which the missions were established has been
virtually ignored.
Retired engineer and Stillwater Club member Alan
Kemp will present a maritime perspective on Father Serra’s mission system, highlighting the roles
of both Spanish and Indian mariners in laying the
foundations for the successful establishment of the
missions and positive Franciscan-Indian relations.
Since his retirement, Alan has applied his research
and analysis skills to California’s colonial maritime
history. He has published numerous journal articles and was featured in Serra, Ever Forward
Never Back, a television series on the life of
Junípero Serra.

The day broke clear and cool as the
Stillwater 18 Hole Golfers prepared to
tackle Nicklaus Club – Monterey. The
pro shop set up a shotgun start for the
Four Man -Two Best Balls Tournament. One foursome ran away with it, while
the rest of the groups jockeyed for
second and third place prizes. The
team of Kent Farnsworth, Phil Grinstead, Miles Lundquist and Mathew
Myers captured first with a low net of
126. After winning a tie-breaker,
Kevin Owen (Blind Draw –Thank you,
Kevin!), Jeff Riehl, Dean Turner and
Bob Webster took second. Third
place money went to Ron Coulter,
Charlie Delahay, Dan Dobberpuhl
and Peter Stern. Mike Carter fired his
tee shot to within 2.5 feet to win
“closest to the pin” on hole #3. Charlie Delahay sailed his tee shot over the
daunting chasm on the infamous 14th
hole to within 14.5 feet and took the
other “closest to the pin” prize. Players enjoyed a sumptuous BBQ lunch
after their round. The next 18 Hole
Outing is a combination event with the

Pines on July 21. This event is the 2nd

HONOR FLIGHT PROGRAM
http://www.honorflightbayarea.org/home.html
MISSION AND GOAL Transport America's veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those
memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices. Helping every single veteran in America, willing and able of getting
on a plane or a bus, visit THEIR memorial.
PRIORITY AND ELIGIBILITY - Top priority is given to America's
most senior heroes — survivors of World War II and any veteran
with a terminal illness who wishes to visit THEIR memorial. The
program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War
and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis. All
men and women serving stateside or overseas are eligible.
PHILOSOPHY - Since America felt it was important to build a
memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veter- “We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as
ans, the Honor Flight Network believes it's equally important they they go by.” – Will Rogers
that they actually get to visit and experience THEIR memorial.
The Stillwater Club will have a speaker discuss this remarkable
program at our January 2016 luncheon. In the meantime, if you
or someone you know is interested in participating. please click
on the link at the top of the page.
THE ROUNDABOUT ON HOLMAN HIGHWAY, by Don Eastman
Wherever on the Monterey Peninsula they reside,
each and every Stillwater Club member will be impacted by the traffic confusion emanating from the
construction of the Holman Highway Roundabout that
is slated to start in March, 2016 and last for several
months. Members who live in Pebble Beach and
Monterey have had access through various organizations including the Del Monte Forest Property Owners
to information about plans for the roundabout.
Members who live in Carmel Valley, Pacific Grove,
Carmel and locations that are more distant from the
intersection of Highway 1 and west-bound Highway
68 may not have had such information. Therefore,
the Stillwater Club Board of Directors decided at the
June meeting that links to on-line videos and other
information about the Roundabout should be placed
in the July issue of the WAVE.
Below is information leading to two links where information, including descriptive videos can be found.
The first link is to the web-site for the Traffic Agency of
Monterey County (TAMC). The second link is to the
web-site for the City of Monterey. Both links contain
information about work-shops, seminars and other
community based meetings that are being hosted on
an on-going basis to communicate in advance about
the traffic interruptions that will take place when the
Roundabout is under construction.

A man boards an airplane &
settles in. He sees a most beautiful woman heading straight
towards his seat. A wave of
nervous anticipation washes
over him. Lo & behold, she
takes the seat right beside him.
Eager to strike up a conversation, he blurts out, "Business
trip or vacation?"
She turns, smiles & says, "Business. I'm going to the annual
Nymphomaniac convention in
Chicago."
He swallows hard & is instantly CRAZED with excitement. Here's
the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen, sitting right next to
him, & she's going to a meeting of nymphomaniacs! Struggling to
maintain his cool, he asks, "What's your business role at this convention?"
"Lecturer," she says, "I use my experiences to debunk some of the
popular myths about sexuality."
"Really," he says, swallowing hard, "what myths are those?"
"Well," she explains," one popular myth is that African American
men are the most well endowed, when, in fact, it is the Native
American Indian man who is most likely to posses that trait. Another popular myth is that French men are the best lovers, when
actually, it is men of Jewish descent."
Suddenly, the woman becomes very embarrassed & blushes. "I'm
sorry," she says. "I shouldn't be discussing this with you, I don't
even know your name!"
"Tonto," he says. "Tonto Goldstein."

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
As of the end of June we have 25 new members in 2015 with others in
process. Unfortunately, Ron Lima moved out of the area and resigned. That brings the net active membership to 190. Our newest members are Kelly O’Keefe, Jack Hardy, Ken Peterson,
Larry Holden, Rick Verbanec, David Hall and Jeff Froke. Many of
them used the revised application form. Please welcome them. All members should have their Stillwater Club lapel pins and wear
them to the luncheons. So far just six new members have received
their free Stillwater Club caps. All other new members should receive
them from me at the August luncheon. The revised, simplified and self-explanatory new member application
form is on the Stillwater Club website [www.stillwaterclub.org]. This
form should be used, not the former one. If any sponsor or applicant
has questions, please contact me directly at [email protected] or
