Sailing Together - PMSC’s answer to ‘lastminute.com!’
Splendid though they are, social events in the clubhouse are not all there is to
PMSC! The water that laps our clubhouse wall connects us not only to a wide
range of local ports and anchorages suitable for a weekend visit, but also
beckons the more adventurous to the possibilities for longer distance sailing.
Whether your taste is for the joys of cruising, watching the spectacle of barges or
smacks racing, or participating in the challenge of a bit of yacht or dinghy racing,
you need a means of keeping in touch with what others are doing in your club.
To complement our many scheduled ‘organized’ sailing events, we encourage
members to post their imminent cruising plans on an informal email network in
order to help them to link up with other club members on more ‘ad hoc’ gettogethers. The purpose could be to meet up for a barbecue or a trip ashore, to
gain familiarity with the passage or destination, or just for some company en
route. Given the unpredictability of the weather (not to mention the composition of
your crew!) it’s often easier to leave the decision about where to go on a particular
sailing weekend to the last minute. Unfortunately this often results in your ending
up at one of the same limited range of destinations thereby missing out on what
might have been a great opportunity to socialise with other club members, and
benefit from others’ knowledge of anchorages, pubs and other facilities.
This year we will again use this email network to include reminders about
forthcoming events, requests for crew and offers to crew, and any other topical
items of potential interest to local sailors.
Do please therefore join in – there’s no commitment – at the worst you will receive
some emails saying where other club members are sailing to – and at best you
will have some more enjoyable times on the water in the coming season. When
the time comes, you just send a short email before the event to
[email protected], to say (for example) that “<Boat name> is headed for the
Deben on Saturday nth June probably mooring overnight at the Rocks or
Waldringfield …” That message would go to all the people on the network and
anyone interested in heading for the same destination could then liaise
accordingly.
Go on give it a try – what have you got to lose? To register your details (you can
unsubscribe yourself at any time), just go to http://www.pmsc.org.uk/cruising.htm
and follow the simple instructions.

SUMMER PROGRAMME 2009
CLASS A - Cruising yachts with Portsmouth Handicap up to and including 1140
CLASS B - Cruising yachts with Portsmouth Handicap 1283 and over
4 CLUBS RIVER SERIES
(EVENING STAR TROPHY)
The first three boats from each Club to complete each race in the series will
attract points according to their overall position on handicap. Points will be
awarded as follows; 1st- 1 point; 2nd – 2 points; 3rd – 3 points and so on. All
races to count, this changes RRS A4. Where fewer than three yachts enter from
any one Club in any race, the absent yachts will be scored as the number of
entries on the day plus 3. Yachts retiring will be scored as the number of entries
on the day plus 1.
The Club with the smallest total number of points will win each race and the Club
with the smallest number of points over all three races will be the Series
Champions.
If only one vessel enters any race, the race will be void.

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLUB RACES 2009
1. All races will be sailed under the current edition of “The Racing Rules of Sailing” except as amended by these
instructions.
1a. Racing yachts must identify themselves to Race Officers by completing the Race Entry Form, stating the
number of crew on board, before starting a race.
1b. Races run by the Club and designated “open” may be contested by boats and crews not affiliated to Pin Mill
Sailing Club.
1c. Races not designated “open” are restricted to boats owned by a Pin Mill Sailing Club member and skippered
by such a member.
2. CLASS SIGNALS: Class A: Flag A. Class B: Flag B.
3. STARTING TIME: As published on Club notice board and in Club Circulars.
4. STARTING and FINISHING LINE: See Course Card Instructions.
5. COURSE: The number of the course to be sailed will be displayed from a board hung by the Clubhouse mast or in
the case of a Committee boat start from the deep water channel side of the Committee boat. The details of each
course are given on the Course Card. The number will be displayed as soon as possible before the warning signal
(5 minutes) for the class concerned but in any case the number displayed at the preparatory signal (4 minutes) is
the number for that class. NB. All turning marks must be rounded.
6. Yachts racing are to observe the “International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea” and Ipswich
Port Authority & Harwich Haven Authority Bylaws Nos. 18, 19, 44 and 50 “Yachts, cruisers and power boats shall
not make use of the deep water channel or approaches to wharves, piers and jetties in such a way as to cause
obstructions to large vessels using the harbour.” If a boat’s engine has to be used while racing to avoid shipping, a
declaration must be made at the end of the race; automatic disqualification will not follow. No yacht shall navigate
within the deep-water channel to seaward of the Guard Buoy.
7. STARTING SIGNALS (RYA Racing Rules, rule 26):
Warning
5 minutes before start. Class Flag displayed and one short blast sounded.
Preparatory
4 minutes before start. Flag P displayed and one short blast sounded.
One Minute
1 minute before start, flag P lowered and a long sound signal.
Start
Class Flags lowered and one short blast sounded.
Note
Signals to be taken from action of the Flags and NOT from the sound signals.
8. RECALLS: If any yacht or part thereof has crossed the starting line before the starting signal a second blast will be
sounded immediately after the signal is made and the Class Flag will be kept at “half-mast’ or the recall board
displayed until the offending yacht has returned and recrossed the line correctly.
Failure to return and recross the line will disqualify the offending yacht. Recall numbers will not be used.
9. GENERAL RECALLS: If the Officer of the Day decides to restart the race as soon as possible after the starting
signal, two further short blasts will be sounded and the general recall board will be displayed or the First Substitute
Flag hoisted over the Class Flag. A further warning signal will be sounded 5 minutes later.
10. POSTPONEMENT: A postponement of 15 minutes from the advertised time of starting will be signalled by the
Answering Pennant over the Class Flag and the sounding of two short blasts. Dipping and rehoisting this signal at
15-minute intervals together with the sounding of two short blasts will indicate further postponement.
11. CANCELLATION: Flag N and the sounding of three short blasts signals the cancellation of a race.
12. PROTESTS: Protests arising out of a race must be handed to the Officer of the Day in writing not more than two
hours after the finish of the protesting yacht and must be accompanied by a fee of £5. A boat intending to protest
shall promptly and conspicuously display a RED FLAG and every effort must be made to hail and inform the
protestee. Protests will be heard in the Clubhouse as soon after the race as possible.
13. RACING FLAGS: Starting:- Competing yachts MUST wear a racing flag (rectangular flag) at the masthead or
backstay. Failure to comply will disqualify the offending yacht. Ensigns AND/OR burgees NOT to be worn when
racing.
Retiring:- Yachts retiring MUST remove the racing flag, wear an ensign (for easier observation by the Race
Officer) and pass through the finish line.
14. GAFF RIGGED YACHT: For the purpose of the ISAF racing Rules, all gaff rigged vessels are considered to form
a separate class and as such are exempt from the restrictions with regard to whisker poles as set out in Rule 50.2.
15. TIME LIMIT: The first yacht home must complete the course within 7 hours unless otherwise advertised.
16. The Sailing Committee reserves the right to alter or amend these Sailing Instructions as may be deemed
necessary.
17. The race organizers shall not be liable for any loss, damage, death or personal injury howsoever caused to the
owner/competitor his skipper or crew as a result of their taking part in the race or races. Moreover every owner /
competitor warrants the suitability of his yacht for the race or races.
PERSONAL BUOYANCY EQUIPMENT MUST BE CARRIED FOR ALL THE CREW.

SAFETY GUIDANCE
The Harwich Haven Authority (HHA) and Ipswich Port Authority (IPA) are required
to have plans that cover all eventualities for all activities within their areas. In
addition there is a need to ensure that Thames Coastguard (HMCG) is kept
informed of all situations when they arise, whether or not assistance is required.
Following risk assessment guidance from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA)
Pin Mill Sailing Club (PMSC) has a duty to inform the HHA, IPA, and HMCG of its
programme of organised events at the beginning of each year.
The Harwich Area Sailing Association (HASA), supported by PMSC, recommends
the following for all yachts:•
A functioning engine and sufficient fuel for 5 hours motoring as a
minimum
•
VHF radio
•
An emergency method of steering
•
Each yacht completes the maritime and Coastguard Agency CG66 form
so HMCG have up to date information about yachts in the local area
