Donors,
Thank you for your continuing loyalty to the North Carolina Zoo and its programs.
As a result of your generosity, the NC Zoo Society posted a fundraising net of
$3,210,644 in 2011. These funds were set side to support the education, research,
conservation and recreational missions of the NC Zoo.
Taken together, the dues paid by Zoo Society members provided the largest, single
block of contributions—$1,762,931—in 2011. Foundation and individual grants added
more than one-million dollars to our 2011 fundraising total. The largest of these grants
was a $375,000 gift, administered by the NC Department of Justice, to support a
wetland protection and reconstruction project in Halifax County. Sylvan Heights Bird
Park, a conservation partner of the NC Zoo Society, will lead this initiative.
A second major grant, $265,475, arrived from the Adessium Foundation to
support Great Ape Conservation in Central Africa. Dr. Rich Bergl, Ph.D., Curator of
Research, earned this grant, which will help fund a major educational initiative to
protect wild Gorillas and Chimpanzees.
Zoo friends and donors, Bob and Bonnie Meeker, continued to support the Zoo’s
educational efforts and staff by contributing $245,000 toward the construction of
KidZone and $70,000 to build an Exhibit Design fabrication building. Kidzone, a play
area structured to connect children to nature and to outdoor play, also received a
$142,456 grant from the Institution of Museum and Library Services.
Other major gifts to the Society included $144,831 from Zoo To Do, the annual
fundraiser sponsored by Randolph Telephone and hosted by the Randolph Friends of
the Zoo; $369,614 in funding from estate gifts left to the Zoo Society; and $308,347
netted from Zoo Society gift shop sales.
Funding the North Carolina Zoo
During 2011, the Zoo Society turned over $3,153,315 to the Zoo, including nearly
$700,000 in program services provided by the Zoo Society. The Zoo Society provided
$570,290 toward the Zoo’s general operating support and $480,471 for several Zoo
capital projects, including the construction of KidZone and the expansion and
renovation of the Polar Bear exhibit. Funds from Zoo Society donors also provided
$451,535 to support the Zoo’s ongoing field conservation programs for Cross River
Gorillas, African Elephants, Polar Bears, Hellbenders, Schweinitzii Sunflower and other
species. Society donations also made $197,991 available to support Zoo education
programs. Finally, Society donors contributed $401,552 to Sylvan Heights Bird Park,
the Zoo and Zoo Society’s conservation and exhibition partner in Scotland Neck. Sylvan
Heights exhibits the largest collection of waterfowl found in North America.
