SEASON PREVIEW “We are very pleased to name these three individuals as our captains for 2006,” explained Coach Laux. “We will be a talented team but will be very young and in need of strong senior leadership both on the field and off. These three student-athletes have established themselves as three of the top players in the ODAC, and through their example on the field and in the classroom have earned the respect of their teammates.” The 2006 Tigers consist of 19 returning players, six of which were starters or impact players during the 2005 campaign. Joining these returning players is a group of talented freshmen that will look to make their mark on the field. With the loss of several key starters from the 2005 team, The Tigers look to build off a 2005 season in which they were many of these young players will be expected to contribute in the Top Ten in the South Region for the entire season. Also, immediately. Although the Tigers will be young, they will the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) be talented. “We are very picked the Tigers as the 12th most excited about bringing in a improved team in the nation. Hampdenvery talented recruiting class Sydney was second in the ODAC in goals for the second consecutive allowed, and the Tigers eight shutouts year,” explained Coach Laux. tied for third in the Hampden-Sydney “These are some of the top record books for a single season. Three players from their respecof the four Tigers’ all conference playtive high schools, districts, ers will not be returning, but the young and club teams. We expect Tigers will look to build off key victories many of these newcomers to over ODAC-foes Randolph-Macon and earn spots as either starters Roanoke College (The first Tiger team to or impact players. I’m most defeat the two in the same season). excited about the individual quality of character posForwards sessed by each of these new The Tigers lose their senior captains and players.” These young Tigers leading scorers from a year ago; however, will be led by a solid group there is no shortage of talent to fill the of captains including seniors void. Sophomores Jason Powell (MariKerry Burke, Will Robbins, etta, GA/ Pope) and Reed Westra (Chesand Greg Smith. ter, VA/ L.C. Bird) will look to take over Sophomore midfielder Michael Krewinghaus at the forward positions. During his freshReturning as a starter and one of the premier shutdown men season, Powell found the back of the net twice; both goals defenders, Kerry Burke will look to head a very talented coming against Roanoke College. Westra will look to make the Tiger Defense. Burke looks to build off his All-ODAC transition from football to soccer. As the Tiger kicker, Westra 2005 campaign, in which he was the only Tiger to start was voted to the All-ODAC and VaSID second teams and led every contest. In 2005, Burke was also voted as the Player’s all ODAC kickers with 70 points. Also looking to challenge for Choice MVP and received the “Hustle Award”. playing time up front is Sophomore Ian Ciejek (Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin). Looking to add leadership to the forward posiAlso leading the Tigers in the back is Will Robbins. During tion is senior Robbie O’Cain (Asheville, NC/ Ashville) as he has the 2005 campaign, Robbins played in all 19 games, starting made 39 appearances during his Hampden-Sydney career. 18 of them. Known for his steady play, Robbins’ leadership will solidify the Tiger Defense. Midfielders Controlling the midfield will be a host of Tigers with valuable Returning for his second season as a captain, Greg Smith playing experience. Senior Captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, looks to improve on his 2005 season as an outside midVA/ Fauquier) will lead the group coming off his 2005 season fielder. Smith served as a scoring option in 2005 as he in which the outside midfielder scored four goals and had three tallied four goals and three assists. Smith has seven career assists. At the other outside mid position is junior Greg Danahy goals and was the team’s recipient of the 2004 “Hustle (Roanoke, VA/ Hidden Valley). Award”. HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 2006 Hampden-Sydney Soccer Danahy has 16 career starts for the Tigers with two career goals and assists. Sophomore Michael Krewinghaus (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb) will look to build off of his impressive freshman campaign. The center midfielder scored three goals and had four assists including two game winning goals against Ferrum and Randolph-Macon. Two sophomores, Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin) and Robert Baybutt (Mechanicsville, VA/ Lee Davis), will compete for the defensive mid position. Defenders Schedule There is no place like home for the Tigers as they went 9-1-1 on Miller Field in 2005. This home field advantage will be helpful for the Tigers as they open the 2006 season with five straight games at home. The season kicks off as the Tigers host the Arby’s/Hampden-Sydney Soccer Classic featuring Alvernia, Averett, and Lynchburg on September 2-3. The Tigers will open conference play on the road as they travel to Greensboro to take on Guilford on September 20. Other key dates to remember will be September 23 as the Tigers face Washington & Lee in front of a Family Weekend crowd and October 6 against Eastern Mennonite for Homecoming. The Tigers will conclude the 2006 regular season with a home contest on October 24 against Bridgewater at 3pm. Expectations for the Hampden-Sydney soccer program are high, but Head Coach Josh Laux is confident in his players. “Our team has a lot more confidence based on the success of last season,” said Laux. “However, Senior defender and captain Will Robbins in order for us to get the next level, we will be Goalkeepers depending on a combination of quality senior leadership Sophomore Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/ Beneand the ability of our young players to step in and play dictine) returns as the Tiger goalkeeper. Despite quality soccer. The ODAC is an even conference from the missing nearly one-third of the season, Marchetti top to the bottom. It is important to approach each game tied for fourth in the Hampden-Sydney record books with a working class mentality so that we can have success for single-season shutouts. The competition should against such tough competition.” be fierce as three players look to challenge for the starting role. Senior Nathaniel Dallas (Hendersonville, TN/ Hendersonville), junior Michael Eagan (Midlothian, VA/ Midlothian), and incoming freshmen Michael Overman (Greensboro, NC/ Grimsley) are all capable of competing for time in front of the net for the Tigers in 2006. HSC SEASON PREVIEW Senior captains Kerry Burke (Chester, VA/ Thomas Dale) and Will Robbins (Ridgeland, MS/ Jackson Prep) return as the leaders of the Tiger defense which ranked second in the ODAC last season in goals allowed. With the departure of three-time All-ODAC performer Chris Cadogan, the Tiger defense becomes sort of a question mark. Sophomore Brad Cook (Culpepper, VA/ Woodberry Forrest) should see significant playing time following his impressive spring season. Cook’s technical skills, size, and ability in one vs. one situations make him a likely candidate to fill one of the two vacancies in the Tiger defense. Also looking to fill one of the voids is sophomore Tony Pitts (Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin), who started eight games for the Tigers in 2005. Of the three, Dallas has the most experience as he has started 19 games for the Tigers with a 2.21 goals against average. Hampden-Sydney Soccer Tigers Head Soccer Coach Josh Laux Randolph-Macon, 2001 Third Season HEAD COACH JOSH LAUX Leading the Hampden-Sydney men’s soccer team for his second year is head coach Josh Laux. Only the seventh head coach to take the reigns since soccer became an intercollegiate sport at Hampden-Sydney College in 1969, Laux is returning for a new season after successfully recruiting one of the best freshman groups in the ODAC. Hoping to challenge for the ODAC title, Laux will rely heavily on a seasoned group of six seniors to emulate his work ethic and philosophy while many still consider this year’s team to be in a rebuilding phase. The unlikeliest of coaches, Laux came to Hampden-Sydney College after four years playing and three years coaching at arch rival Randolph-Macon College. Laux comes to Hampden-Sydney after serving as the assistant coach and most recently the interim head coach in the spring of 2004 at Randolph-Macon. In 2002, Laux’s team started seven freshmen who proved to be one of the top 10 teams in the south region and made a run to the ODAC finals. Again in 2003, R-MC was ranked in the top 10 of the south region and made it as far as the ODAC semi’s. As interim head coach, Laux’s team was undefeated in five games which consisted of top notch opponents including ninth ranked division one powerhouse Virginia Commonwealth University and the defending ODAC champions, Virginia Wesleyan College. Also during his tenure as a Macon assistant, Laux completed his master’s degree in environmental studies at nearby Virginia Commonwealth. Laux is no stranger to the level of play here. His playing and coaching knowledge as well as experience of the ODAC will be a huge asset to the Hampden-Sydney soccer program. A standout player on the R-MC soccer team from 1997 to 2000, Laux is tied for 12th on both Randolph- Macon’s career goals and total points list, and is tied for fourth in career assists. During his career at Randolph- Macon, Laux was named All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference, All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors, and All-South Region, and he was the ODAC Rookie of the Year in 1997. As a senior, he received the George P. Compton Award, which is presented to the school’s most outstanding male athlete. “As a student-athlete at Randolph-Macon and then as a coach, I always had great respect for Hampden-Sydney College’s academics and athletics,” said Laux. Laux holds a State Goalkeeper Diploma, a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national diploma, and an advanced national diploma, both of which he received with a distinguished pass, and a NSCAA high school special topics diploma. He has coached for the Richmond Strikers U-17 Premier team and the Richmond Strikers U-17 and U-18 Super Y teams. Academically at R-MC, Laux majored in Spanish and international studies with minors in history and religion. He was also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa. Laux graduated from the Haverford School near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he played varsity soccer and led his team to an undefeated season as a senior in 1996. He was named all-county, all-area, and all-conference for several seasons, and was his team’s Most Valuable Player while setting the school record for assists during his senior campaign. On the club level, Laux played for FC Delco Soccer Club in southeastern Pennsylvania, and was a team captain from 1994 to 1997. He was also a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania state select team from 1994 to 1996. Coach Laux gives instruction to senior captain Kerry Burke HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 2006 Hampden-Sydney Soccer Assistant Soccer Coach Matt Cooper Randolph-Macon, 2006 First Season New to the Hampden-Sydney soccer program is first-year assistant coach Matt Cooper. A 2006 graduate of Randolph-Macon College, Cooper received his B.S. in Sociology. Cooper brings valuable playing experience to the job as he was a four-year letterman for the John Carroll School in Bel Air, Maryland. At John Carroll, he was selected as a two-time first team All-County selection and was voted team captain his senior season. Cooper was a four-year starter at Randolph-Macon College, where he started all but four games which were due to injury. During his impressive career, Cooper was selected as a three-time All-ODAC performer, two-time Regional All-American, and a two-time VaSID All-State selection. Cooper was twice selected to the ODAC All-Tournament team. The addition of an assistant coach with the credentials of Cooper will be valuable to the young Tiger soccer team. “Matt is one of, if not the best midfield player I have seen in the ODAC throughout my nine-year affiliation with the conference,” explained head coach Josh Laux. “He brings a love for the game that we hope will be contagious among our team members. Matt has a great deal of potential as a young coach, and we expect him to be an important part of our team as we strive to improve and build off of our successful 2005 season.” Robert Harem Hampden-Sydney, Class of 2007 First Season Hailing from Pelham, Alabama, Harem willl graduate in the fall of 2007 with a degree in Biology. Harem returns to HampdenSydney following a four-year playing career. During his final season in 2005, Harem was tied for first in the ODAC with nine assists. Also during the 2005 season, Harem received second team All-ODAC honors in the midfield. With his experience in ODAC soccer competition and working relationship with many of the members of the 2006 team, Harem will be a valuable asset to the Tiger soccer staff. He returned to H-SC as an assistant coach in 1997, and is currently the girls coach at Heathwood Hall High School. Don Hughes (1993-1996) Mike Melvin (1993-1997) A durable player at Hampden-Sydney, Hughes played in 73 of a possible 77 games in his four-year career. His career totals included nine goals and seven assists. Hughes was part of the best team in H-SC history, the 1994 squad which was 15-4-2 and advanced to the ODAC Finals. In his final two seasons, he was among the Tigers top five leading scorers. The 13-member ODAC stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country and the largest conference in the South Region. The league was formed on May 18, 1975, as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September 1976. (The name change to ODAC became effective January 1, 1976.) Charter members were eight colleges in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College, and Washington and Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competitions in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to sponsor championships in 22 sports. The conference expanded in the late 1980s and once again in the early 1990s. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. Most recently, Catholic University was added to the league in 1999 for football only and began competition last fall. Over the past seven years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting four NCAA Division III championships in football, men’s basketball, softball, and baseball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII football championships. Since that time, the two hosts have gained three additional tournaments. Last year, DIII football made its seventh appearance, drawing a crowd of over 5,000 at Salem Football Stadium. Hampden-Sydney Soccer H-SC ADMINISTRATION 30 Tigers Dr. Walter M. In proportion to its enrollment, HampdenSydney consistently is in the top five percent of all colleges and universities in graduates listed in “Who’s Who in America.” Since 1776, the College has provided the educational experience necessary to produce leaders in every field of endeavor, including one U.S. President, 12 senators, 32 congressmen, 12 governors, well over 100 state representatives, and a host of ministers, attorneys, doctors and judges. The College offers the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degrees, preparing students for direct entry into the world of business or for further professional training in law, medicine, business, government, teaching, or the ministry. Basic to the success of its program is a dedicated faculty, over 90% of whom hold earned doctorates in their fields and all of whom devote their principal energy to teaching. The student-faculty ratio is 11:1. STUDENTS RUN THEIR OWN ACTIVITIES Student life is considered an integral part of the education process at Hampden-Sydney. Students conduct their own affairs through a student government elected by them and composed of members of all classes. A student-enforced honor code is a Hampden-Sydney tradition that continues to flourish, upholding the atmosphere of personal integrity, trust, and mutual respect essential to the operation of a dynamic academic community. Responsibility for maintaining the system is taken so seriously that students enjoy one of the freest campuses in America, where books and bikes can be left unattended and professors can leave their classrooms during tests and exams. Student activities are numerous and diverse, including publication of a newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine, and operation of a radio station and volunteer fire department along with a wide variety of clubs and other organizations. Whether they like drama, music, classical debate, hiking, and canoeing, or even electronics and short wave radio, students can find campus organizations that cater to their interests. Many student programs involve a strong commitment of service to the community, such as the tutoring program for area high school students. The social life of the College is centered around 11 national fraternities and a strong organization of independents. Concerts, mixers, movies, and a variety of unusual programs are planned and carried out through a student-run college activities committee. HSC 31 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE Hampden-Sydney is one of the South’s outstanding liberal arts colleges. Nestled in the gently rolling countryside of south-central Virginia, H-SC is the oldest of the country’s few remaining men’s colleges. Hampden-Sydney is committed to the belief that a liberal arts education provides the best foundation not only for a professional career, but also for the great moral and intellectual challenges of life. Students learn that the pursuit of truth is a lifelong endeavor, requiring clarity and objectivity of thought, a sensitive moral conscience, and a dedication to responsible citizenship. As the College’s mission statement says, liberal education aims to assist students to free themselves from ignorance, malice, prejudice, and superstition; from the tyranny of intellectual selfishness; and from impotence in judging the claims and values of experts. It teaches students to gather evidence patiently; it educates them to write and speak with force, precision, and clarity; and it encourages them to seek refreshment and inspiration in the fine arts.
