figures of Guan
Yin or “Kwannon”,
the Chinese or
Japanese
goddess of mercy,
were handcrafted
by Seyei Fine
China of Nagoya,
Japan around 1960.
Each snowy white goddess holds a lotus flower and has
flowers and leaves at her feet. Each figure stands about
24” tall and would be an elegant addition to any decor.
Buy one for $95, or both for $175.
Figures can be viewed in the Senior Center Library.

Don’t delay sign-up quickly!
King Tut Update – The question of the hour is do you have
any spots left on July 30th or September 19th, and the answer
is: “I don’t know.” I am in the process of going through the “list”
of those who want to go, and getting sign-ups set. I do know
that I will be adding an October date…maybe two! Please call
me to get on the list if you are interested…don’t delay!
The New Dungeness Lighthouse trip with Captain
Charles on the Water Limousine has been very popular! This is
a great trip for those who are fairly independent walkers (no
need for a cane and/or walker), but don’t have the ability or
stamina to make a hike out to the lighthouse. Please call if you
have any questions, and if it would be a good option for you.
LeMay Auto Museum – At time of print this trip has just a
few seats left. If you are interested in this trip sign up quickly!
Ft. Nisqually and Pt. Defiance – This trip needs more sign
-ups! It is a wonderful opportunity for an adventure back in
time! Take a second look at this trip; it offers insight into the
history of our state and area, you get to tour the actual fort,
AND we might see an actual blacksmith at work using period
appropriate/accurate tools and technique! Not to mention the
beautiful waterfront views from Pt. Defiance park!
Emerald Downs – We are off to the races! This time we
are staying ALL day!!! If you have never been to a horse race,
this is an experience not to miss! Trust me, I wasn’t looking
forward to it the first time I went, but I had the best time! It’s a
unique environment, and the views of Mt. Rainier are
breathtaking, you feel like you can just reach out and touch it!
Leavenworth & Harrison Hot Springs – These are just
around the corner! See the Green & Blue sheets!!!
A personal note from me to you…Thank You! I just
celebrated my two year anniversary working at SSAC, and it
has been a wonderful experience! I love coming to work every
day. I can’t wait to see what new places we find for us to visit,
new classes and activities to bring to the center, and most
important new friends to make! I feel privileged to work at
YOUR senior activity center. I am excited for this next year, and
for those of you who are regular travelers let’s see how much
fun we can have exploring, and for those of you who haven’t
traveled with us yet, I encourage you to “Come See ‘How We
Roll’!”.

A SUCCESS STORY!
Three Sequim High
School seniors were
awarded scholarships
by SSAC Executive
Director Michael Smith
on May 30th at an
award ceremony held at the high school.
Waylon Lam and Stephanie Laurie were each
awarded $1,000 as the boy and girl recipients this
year. These annual scholarships, now in their 6th year,
are funded entirely from a portion of the proceeds of
SSAC’s annual Benefit Sale.
Waylon Lam will attend the University of Washington
given by the SSAC board of directors, the executive director,
and the trips and programs director. One of the directors,
Bob Spinks, rallied his friends in law enforcement, and the
US Border Patrol agents in Port Angeles donated $250
towards the scholarship in just 24 hours after being
approached.
The Directors’ Award Scholarship, in the amount of $550
was given to Clay Charley, who wants to attend Central
Washington University and become a law enforcement
officer.
Clay, Stephanie and Waylon have all written nice thank
you notes for their scholarships and came for a tour of the
building and to meet the board members recently. All three
have been active in
many acts of service
throughout their high
school careers and
promise to let us know
how they are doing in
the future. SSAC’s
scholarship program
bridges the generations
and shows that our
seniors care about
young people. Having
a scholarship fund and
awarding fine young
people like these
money to further their
education, fulfills the
portion of our mission

community.”

BILL OF THE MONTH
LET THERE BE LIGHT!
The Co-op Farm and Garden store is our
supplier for our energy efficient, 4-foot
fluorescent light tubes which illuminate
all we do at SSAC.
Several years ago we changed from a
dimmer, more orange hue, to the
“Daylight” brightness you see above you
today. The “temperature” of light is expressed on the
Kelvin scale, a scale used to describe the color
temperature of stars. We used to use bulbs rated at
just 3100K, but we now use bulbs rated at a whopping
5000K. In fact, we are getting brighter light for the
same amount of watts of energy!
If you suffer from “SAD”, Seasonal Affective Disorder,
you should know that the sun is measured at a color
temperature of 5778K degrees. So our lights, at 5000K
are almost as bright as the sun itself, and similar to
lights used to treat SAD! So come to SSAC, bask
under our wonderful lights, and be happy!

The light tubes from the Co-op are purchased in a
case of 30 for $111.10, meaning that they cost about
$3.70 each. Each fixture uses either 2 or 3 bulbs, and
we have over 70 fixtures in the building! If you would
like to donate to our General Operating Fund, you can
help us afford to “energize” nice features like the
lighting described above!

Where in the World Are Ivan & Carol Hoyt?

This month finds our veteran Sequim
travelers, Carol and Ivan Hoyt, over a third
of the way through their nine-month-long journey. With one
European caravan completed with a total of four RV's, they
are now in Dusseldorf to
begin another.
This 4-star hotel, Villa
Auchbach, is gorgeous!
Very elegant and
gracious, yet warm and
comfortable. We walked
through the very
attractive neighborhood
of stately homes and mansions to an Italian restaurant for
our delicious welcome steak dinner. There are 3 staff
(Dieter and Gaby, and tailgunner, Rich) and 14 caravaners
this trip.
The next day, we drove most of the 127 miles on the
autobahn to Antwerp, Belgium. We got into Antwerp in the
middle of rush hour traffic. It was a terrible 40 min.
experience as our 9 rigs kept getting separated by long
traffic lights. Quite unnerving trying to see and follow the rig
ahead of you in heavy traffic on unfamiliar city streets with
road signs you can't understand! (Just realized that we
drove from Germany, through the Netherlands, and into
Belgium . . . all in one day!)
We saw Our Lady Cathedral, the largest in the Benelux
countries of Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg. With 9
naves and 125 pillars, it is a gem of Flemish Gothic
architecture. Because of extensive restoration inside, we
didn't want to pay 5 euros each to try to see the 3 Rubens
paintings inside. Instead we wandered the main square to
see the Flemish architecture of the guild houses for free.

The next day, we
boarded the
vehicle ferry to
cross the English
Channel from
near Calais,
France, to Dover,
England, a two
hour trip. Then, to
our campground just outside London.
From there, we took a local double decker bus and “the
tube” to the center of London, where we walked to the
British Museum, London's most popular attraction. Built in
1847, it houses star exhibits that include the Rosetta
Stone, mummies, Egyptian, Assyrian, and Greek
antiquities including Parthenon friezes and sculptures.
Later, it was on to the British Library with its special
collection of world treasures (no photos allowed): the
Magna Carta, Leonardo's notebooks, Mozart's handwritten
scores, a Gutenberg Bible, maps, manuscripts, etc. Weary
from so much “museuming” I didn't send much time
studying anything but I really appreciated the chance to
view those treasures.
Wonder where they’ll be off to NEXT month. . . .

BIG THANK YOU TO…
PAULA LEWIS AND OUR SSAC DRIVERS! ERIC’S RV IN
SEQUIM, AND LES SCHWAB OF GRESHAM, OR AND SEQUIM!

Did you know our bus drivers are volunteers? Did you know
that our bus drivers don’t just show up and drive the bus with
expert skill, but that they also wash the bus, take it for routine
maintenance and non-routine repairs, and
clean the inside of the bus after every trip?
Did you know they also inspect the bus before and refuel it after every trip (no matter
how late at night)? Did you know that our
VOLUNTEER drivers must submit a resume, fill out an application, read and sign
several pages of documents, be background
screened, drug tested, provide a driving record, have a medical exam and go through an
interview with myself and another driver,
and be road tested in our bus before they
can even volunteer to be a driver!?!
Once all of these hurdles, most of which
are required by Federal and State agencies, are met, then they get
to finally drive down the road with upwards of 27 other lives in
their capable hands! We give them lunch money and they can
bring a guest with them to enjoy the trip, at no charge, and that is
about all we can do to say “thank you” for everything they do to
help make our trips wonderful!
But after a recent trip, I am not sure there is even a way that
we can properly thank one driver in particular, Paula Lewis. On
June 11th the bus was heading to Cascade Locks, OR when the
driver side front tire blew out. With amazing ability Paula was
able to safely navigate the bus to the side of the road. Paula told
me that between 50 years of driving experience, a shot of adrenalin, and pure physical strength she got the bus safely pulled over,
and I think all 25 passengers on the bus can attest to how grateful
they are for this! With the help of Joanie McCarthy, the driver
team went to work securing the bus by placing emergency reflectors on the side of the highway, contacted us in the office to make
us aware of the problem and asked how to proceed. They worked
to get Les Schwab to the scene with the correct replacement tire,
and worked with the Oregon Highway Patrol to ensure the safety
of the passengers and Les Schwab employee who was replacing
the tire. Within one hour of the blow out, they had all passengers
safely to their destination. Les Schwab reported back that it was a fluke with the tire,
and all of the other tires look good. Thank
you to the passengers for your support of
the drivers, your help and advice, and for
being so kind and understanding in situation like this!
While things like this can happen at any
time, we are staying vigilant in our inspections and making sure our tires, and bus,
are in good working order. We will be
working closely with our local Les Schwab,
and with Louis Foldoe, another one of our
drivers, to ensure the bus tires, suspension,
etc. are fully inspected by Les Schwab once a month (versus just
the every three or so when we get our oil changed).
Thank you to our drivers, and thank you to the Oregon Highway Patrol and Les Schwab of Gresham, OR and Sequim for
speedy help and expertise in keeping our travelers safe!
Last month I reported that our bus was in the shop with a rear
suspension problem. We believe that this was an error during
installation, and upon further inspection, the rest of the suspension system looks good! Eric’s RV came to our rescue by rushing
our bus to the front of the line to get it fixed quickly, by working
tirelessly with our parts vendor to get the parts covered under
warranty (saving us hundreds of dollars), and to top it all off they
truly went above and beyond by deeply discounting the cost of
labor! Thank you to Eric and everyone at Eric’s RV! Thank you
again to Louis Foldoe for getting the bus to Eric’s RV and back
home again after it was fixed! As a side note, we don’t believe
the suspension problem and tire blow out are related, just a coincidence they happened so close together.

FOR the Bake Sale! Items will be needed
for August 2nd (before 1pm), 3rd (9 am,
until 2:00), and 4th (before 9am, to noon).
Pies are BIG sellers . . . we never have
enough of them! No-sugar pies and other
goodies for diabetics are always
appreciated. Cupcakes generally sell
better than whole cakes; and cookies and
slices bagged in 3’s or by the half-dozen
sell well.
We will try to contact as many people as possible;
