MORE TRIP INFO!
Michelle Rhodes, Trips & Program Director
August is here, and we are continuing our
Summer Adventures!!! But first, let’s start with an update about King
Tut! I have added two…yes TWO more dates!!! October 10th and
24th. I have a feeling these will be our last dates, so if you are
interested in going, please call. I still have availability on both of
these trips. Ok…now on to August!
Get out and enjoy nature and beautiful architecture at the
Bloedel Reserve on the 15th. If you have not seen this amazing
reserve, you truly have missed something amazing. Several of our
travelers keep going every year as it just that wonderful! This trip
allows for those who are hikers/walkers, and those who like to take
things slower or might have some mobility concerns. After this trip
into nature we head over to the picturesque port town of Winslow!
There are some great places to eat, fun shops to enjoy and oh some
wonderful goodies (Mora ice cream is a favorite of mine!!!).
Our next trip into nature will find us at the Hoh Rainforest on
August 31st. Enjoy the lovely drive around the lakes, the rainforest
and wildlife. A nice relaxing day full of natural beauty!
For some art and history and culture we are going to enjoy the
Chihuly Garden and Glass at the Seattle Center on August 17th
and then venturing over to Victoria to the Royal BC Museum on
August 28th. I have seen parts of the Chihuly exhibit, and WoW!!! It
is right next to the monorail, so for more adventure you could jump
aboard and head over to Westlake for some shopping and food! Or
just stay at the Seattle Center and enjoy some of the 50th
Anniversary Celebration exhibits and happenings!
The Royal BC Museum offers a wonderful exhibit about
Dinosaurs and a showcase of photos of Queen Elizabeth II in
celebration of her Diamond Jubilee.
Jumping forward to September for a moment, Harrison Hot
Springs is September 25th to 27th. This trip is the meaning of
relaxation! We start with a drive full of amazing sights, and when we
arrive the pampering begins with our welcome tea. You will be
provided with full access to the pools, and will awake each morning
to a filling buffet breakfast! Enjoy the sights around the resort with a
stroll or by kayak (rentals available for add’l cost), or take advantage
of their luxurious spa (cost varies on service). The second night we
will be treated to a delicious dinner in the famed Copper Room (dress
code of no t-shirts, shorts or running (tennis) shoes for this dining
room). Cost is $445 per person sharing, and $591 for single (nonmembers add 10%). Included is all transportation, ferry, hotel,
breakfast each morning, welcome tea, one dinner and entrance to
pools. Please note that an Enhanced Driver’s License, Passport
Card or Passport are required for border crossing.
Also, if for any reason you need to let us know that you won’t be
able to make it on a trip the morning of, or late the night before,
please call my number at 683-5883 and leave a voicemail. I check
my messages and notify the driver of any last minute cancellations.

AUGUST 2012
MICHAEL SMITH—YOUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
“WHAT WILL BE YOUR LEGACY?” MONTH
Here in the U.S.A. there are no designated
national holidays in the month of August. And with 31
days, it can seem like a long month. Where other
months have typically 21 or 22 working days, August
can have 23 work days in it. More time to get more
work done for salaried people, (yippie!) and a bit bigger
paycheck for those on hourly wages.
I’d like to suggest that just because there are no
national holidays, doesn’t mean we have no reason to
celebrate this August!
For instance, I’ll bet you did not know that August
is “What Will Be Your Legacy?” Month!
It was founded by
motivational speaker Martha J.
Ross-Rodgers, in honor of her
mother, Ida Dale Ross, and is
recognized by the federal
government. There’s no paid time
off from work involved, but there
can be rewarding results from
giving it some thought and taking
action to affect our legacy.
Taking a month to think
about “What Will Be Your
Legacy?” makes us ask ourselves
if we are living up to our potential
and living life to the fullest. More
importantly, are we making a
difference in the lives of others,
and will that difference have a
lasting effect? What people and things matter the most
to you?
Does the way you are spending your time and
resources reflect how you want to be remembered?
These are tough questions for anyone at any age,
but as we approach our later years, the idea of leaving
a legacy and being remembered moves higher on the
priority list for many people. After some reflection on
this topic, some make a vow to take the steps needed
to insure their legacy is a rich and
memorable one that benefits
those that will come after them.
You may decide to make a
more concerted effort to teach
your favorite recipes, woodworking skills, or poems and
stories to your grandchildren and others. Let them know
what it was like during your childhood, youth and working
years. Tell them of the values you have and why you have
them. Pass along your faith, stories and beliefs and
emphasize your hope that they will pass them on to
generations to come. You may decide to teach a class here
at your Center, or just to be more open with people about
what is important to you.
Someday our children and even our
grandchildren will be seniors, and we
will want them to have a nice place to
enjoy activities, programs, classes, and
social events with others. We are
outgrowing this building, and will want
people who come here in 6 or 8 years
to have a better place to enjoy.
As a member of Sequim Senior Activity
Center, you may already be giving of
your time and/or money to help this
organization thrive, and I thank you.
Let’s think bigger and bigger. The new
Center being planned can be our gift to
the future. It can be our LEGACY. Our
names will be on the walls. We will be
remembered as caring people. As we
plan for the future and a new larger Center for generations to
enjoy, will you please consider including SSAC in your
current financial giving and in your estate planning?
If you are planning to make a legacy gift now or in the
future, I would be honored if you would come and share your
plans with me, and let me answer any questions you may
have. Let’s make a lasting impact and a life-changing gift to
ourselves and to those who come after us!

PROPERTY TAXES
As a non-profit, Sequim Senior Activity Center is mostly
exempt from property taxes for property that is used for our
non-profit mission. Any for-profit activities on our property
trigger property taxes. So we do pay property taxes on the
square footage of the restaurant, including the kitchen, the
pantry, and the dining area, since Cameron’s Café is a forprofit tenant of our building.
We have also been assessed property taxes on the
square footage of our health services room where Glory
Ingalls provides low-cost foot care services. The state’s
logic is that if anyone in the room “makes money”, it is
taxable. Direct employees of SSAC are not considered
“for profit”. We tried to argue that providing low-cost foot
care services was part of our mission, but to no avail. In
addition, non-profits are exempt from only the property
taxes themselves, not the levies that are voted on for
schools, fire services, the hospital, etc. We still have to
pay those. So our total property tax bill for our Center, the
parking lot across the street on Hammond, and the
property purchased for a new building total $1,638.14 for
2012.
This is not bad, considering that SSAC owns
properties worth over $1 million. And yes, you can say that
the rent paid from the foot care services and the restaurant
cover it, but you are still welcome to help with this bill to
help our overall bottom line!
(Please note that this article is about property taxes only. We pay no income
taxes at all, and all donations to the Center are fully tax-deductible.)

Where in the World Are Ivan & Carol Hoyt?
By Margaret Cox
We catch up with the Hoyts in the United
Kingdom.
Stratford-upon-Avon: We spent a rainy
morning in this small, well-known town where William
Shakespeare was born in 1564 and died in 1616. Our local guide
took us to
the “bard's”
church
where he
was
baptized
and later
buried in the
floor near
Shakespeare's birthplace (1564)
the altar.
There are several 1400's half-timbered old buildings and taverns
as well as the recently remodeled Royal Shakespeare Theatre
here. The town sits on the Avon River crossed by the 500-yearold Clopton Bridge with many narrow, river houseboats tied up by
the nearby locks. Many fine and quaint shops with their so-British
wares.
Hadrian’s Wall: Hadrian's Wall was built by the Romans
across northern
England to defend
invasions from the
Scots to the north in
AD 120-121. Our first
stop was to see one of
the old Roman forts
(Chester Fort) built to
protect the wall. We
Chester Fort
saw lots of stone fort
foundations but only an 8 ft. section of the original wall.
Blair Castle & Gardens: At the end of a tree-lined avenue we
found that, unlike so many stone castles, this one was white with
black trim, dating from 1279. The main hall contained a
spectacular display of guns, spears, swords and armor! The
interior was a fine Georgian mansion with marvelous pieces of
antique furniture and handmade needlepoint upholstery and
embroideries made by the ladies of the house. As this was a
working estate there were sheep, cattle, and deer being raised,
along with farming and forestry.
Blarney Castle: Blarney Castle (1210)
in the town of Blarney is not much of a
castle to see; very dark, small empty
rooms, 100-step narrow circular stone
staircase up to the top where the Blarney
Stone is. It took Ivan about 45 minutes to
get to the top to take photos from there
because the line up the steps was so long
and slow. No, he didn't kiss the stone but
saw others do it. I knew I didn't want to
climb those steps so I walked around some
Castle towers
of the gardens.
are skeletons
Stonehenge: Stonehenge looks just
like the pictures we are familiar with. And it does sit in a vast
expanse of green grass – no trees. Interesting that they still
don't know who or why the stones were placed there; lots of
theories about possible uses but no one knows for sure.
Stonehenge is
estimated to be
about 5,000 years
old and this is the
3rd one built on
this site.
A note from Carol
as they leave the
Stonehenge
UK back to
Europe and a two week river cruise: Dear Folks, We sure hope
you are having a good summer! We remain well and extremely
happy to be on this wonderful trip of a lifetime. Hard to believe it
is half over already!
Hugs,
Carol and Ivan

SPOTLIGHT ON:
D ON G ERBER
He lived in Sequim for 11 years,
never gave much thought about the
Senior Center, attended the Tech
Fair this past March . . . talked to
me at the Senior Center booth . . .
took a newsletter and application . .
. joined the Sequim Senior Activity
Center . . . now calls for Bingo and
works whenever he can at the
Benefit Sale site!
This month’s spotlighted person, Don Gerber, is a
Nebraskan boy through and through . . . born, bred, educated,
employed, and retired! So, how did he get to Sequim and
become such an active member of SSAC?
Here’s his journey. . . .
Don was born in St. Edward, NE, but was
brought up in Fullerton, NE, graduating from
Fullerton High School, where he lettered as a
member of the school’s first golf team. He
worked for the grocery store where he had
begun part-time as a 12 year old.
Don was drafted into the Army in 1956. He
says that it was “probably a good thing I went,
or I’d probably still be working in that grocery
store!” His first airplane ride in ’57 took him to the army
hospital at Muenchweiler, Germany, where he was a Medical
Supply Clerk until his discharge.
Back to Nebraska—the University of—in Lincoln, where he
received a BS in Business Administration and his CPA
certificate. Don was employed by a CPA firm for a short time;
then by the State of Nebraska working in accounting and
BY MARGARET COX
systems finance. For a year, he had the appointed position of
State Accountant, was Welfare Director, and became
Controller of the Department of Public Welfare, from which he
retired in 1977.
That earlier grocery store played a role in meeting his future
wife, Bertha (aka Murph). They were married in 1961,
celebrating their Golden Anniversary last October. Murph
worked for a group of pathologists in Lincoln as a
cytotechnologist. They have 2 children—a software developer
and an architect—and 3 grandchildren, in Nebraska. Murph is
an avid quilter with the local Sun Bonnet Sues.
In 1999, Don and Murph bought a motor home, their first trip
being to the Oregon coast. Perusing The 50 Best Places to
Retire, they discovered Sequim! Not wanting
to endure harsh Nebraskan winters for the rest
of their lives, they were impressed with reading
about Sequim’s “309 days of sunshine”!!
Accompanied by their four cats, Rainbow’s End
RV Park became their home until October,
when they had bought and moved into a house.
Don also calls Bingo at the VFW. He “plays
at” golf, fools around with a model railroad
layout in the RV shed, enjoys reading nonfiction, particularly about social issues. He is
somewhat of a handyman, and wants to do “whatever I can do
to help other people.”
Of becoming a SSAC member, Don says, “I realized I
needed to get off my duff; it was time to give back. It’s one of
the neatest things I’ve done; it’s a treat to meet all the people.”
And the RV? It resides with the trains and quilting
equipment, making an occasional trip to and from Nebraska.
