WELCOME TO A BRAND NEW ISSUE of Dynapac News. In this issue we highlight one
part of our business that is of major importance to most customers: Our service and support
offer. From our yearly customer satisfaction surveys, we know that Dynapac is chosen as a
supplier, not only because of our high performance products, but also because customers
rely on our service and support network.
FAST AND QUALIFIED support is what customers expect and
it is a top priority for us to meet these expectations.
I am very proud of our qualified team of experienced, well trained and
dedicated service people. Whether engaged in scheduled machine
overhaul or on the road to solve an unexpected problem, our
service technicians are there to secure maximum machine
uptime and a trouble free ownership. With the integration
of Dynapac into Atlas Copco customer centers, we are now
continuously expanding our service network to get even closer
to customers. Read more about the work of a Dynapac service
technician on page four.
IN MARKETS WHERE Dynapac is represented by dealers,
you can expect the same high level of competence and support as provided by our customer centers. In fact, our dealers

THROUGH A SURVEY called Net Promoter Program, Dynapac measures customer
satisfaction on a yearly basis. The survey is part of a global initiative within the Atlas
Copco Group, where more than 15 000 customers in over 20 countries are asked for
their opinion each year. In 2009, Dynapac saw a 35% response rate back from
customers. The survey covers important areas, such as product range, sales and
delivery as well as service and support performance.
Van der spek Based on the responses, we follow up on customers that are dissatisfied in any
area. Activities to improve are implemented and feedback given back to customers.
The trends on each market are analyzed to make sure that we improve on all
markets. Even though we have received great appreciation for our field presence,
product knowledge and support performance, we can also clearly see that the main
improvement areas are related to deliveries and service. We need to be better at
making products and services available even faster and we need to secure the
supply of spares at all times.
Hand held compaction control
Since July, when we concluded the last of the surveys, we have taken a number
of actions to improve in these areas, both on a global basis, but also in each local
customer center. The survey helps us to identify and follow up on areas to improve,
and the input from customers wordwide is crucial to this process.

Dynapac plays important role
in major dam project in Turkey
A fleet of four new Dynapac single drum vibratory rollers is currently working on
the massive Alkumru dam for the hydro electrical power plant project in Turkey.
A total of 18 million m3 of clay and rockfill is being compacted to form a finished
structure with a height of 134 m from foundation level and a crest length of 909 m.
THE $500M PROJECT, which currently
employs a total workforce of some 1250
people, is being undertaken by Limak
HES Yatirimlari AS, one of the region’s
leading investors in the power industry.
The machines are making three or four
passes of up to 200 m in length achieving
the required 99% degree of compaction,
much to the satisfaction of project manager Sukru Sevim.
The CA512 is powered by a Cummins
turbo-charged engine and has maximum
operating weights of 17 and 17.2 tons
in smooth and padfoot drum versions
respectively.
The Alkumru Dam is one of seven adjacent dams to be constructed on Botan
Brook, a tributary of the River Dicle, and
once completed at the end of 2010, will
transform the region into one of large
lakes providing much needed electricity.
According to Limak’s machinery
manager Ali Sabahci, “Out of the 240
or so pieces of large equipment on site,
the Dynapac rollers are among the most
important as they are undertaking the critical compaction of the impermeable clay
layers and maintaining proper contact
points between the clay and existing rock
layers in the dam toe and valley.”
Once completed, the Alkumru Dam and
the Hydro Electrical Power Plant is planned
to produce 828M kWh of electric power per
annum with its 265 MW installed capacity
fulfilling part of the Turkish Government’s
long-term plan to reduce the country’s
dependence on foreign power.
Since the project commenced in 2007,
Dynapac has supplied soil compaction
equipment for the application and also
provided the necessary follow-up
expertise to ensure its correct and
efficient use.
Recently four key people, including the
compaction and paving research manager from Dynapac´s Competence Center
visited the construction site. During the
visit a technical seminar was given to the
entire site management and application
team, covering the latest developments
in compaction technology.
The rollers chosen for this project
consist of three CA512D smooth drum
machines and one CA512PD padfoot
version, all with a drum width of 2130
mm. The smooth drum units are being
used for compacting layers of rockfill
whilst the padfoot machine is working on
the cohesive clay areas.

“It feels great to be
part of the solution”
The days of summer are extra long for Dynapac service technician Stefan Stridh.
When the sun is hot, it’s the peak season for highway construction in Sweden.
There is no time for unscheduled stoppages and all that they entail in terms of lost
production, backed-up lines of asphalt trucks and expensive trips to the repair shop.
Stridh drives 30,000 kilometers a year and travels thousands more by air, just to be
available when customers need him the most.
IT IS A BEAUTIFUL EARLY summer day at
Dynapac’s service center in Järfälla, northwest
of Stockholm. The smell of coffee is in the
air, and the planning of the work for the day
is essentially completed. Service technician
Stefan Stridh calmly confirms that the day will
turn out to be very different than he thought
it would when he went home yesterday, when
he assumed he would be spending a day doing
maintenance work at the service center. But
now Stridh is checking the equipment in his
truck, as a result of a phone call made early
that morning. Customer NCC has reported a
problem with a gas-burning asphalt paver and
time is at a premium.
“The customer who reported the problem is
uncertain as to what might be the cause of the
problem,” he says. “But one thing is certain: The
machine needs to get going again just as soon as
possible.”
Stridh speaks with service center manager
Jan-Erik Frantz. A little later he fires up his red
Dynapac truck and heads down the driveway
on his way to the NCC crew that is waiting at
the recycling center. Before Stridh turns the
key, he sets his Navigator.
“The Navigator is perfect for logging important
information about travel times and man-hours,”
he says. “My Navigator has saved the day
many times. I often have to get to places where
there are hardly any roads.”
NATIONWIDE SERVICE
ORGANIZATION
The worst of the rush hour is over, and the
traffic is flowing with no backup delays. Stridh
is on the phone a lot during the trip, and he
keeps track of the minutes spent on his various
customer contacts. He and his colleagues are

responsible for Mälardalen and northern Sweden. With service centers in Gothenburg and
Staffanstorp, the service organization covers
all of Sweden.
For Stridh, the variety is a major advantage of
his job. No two days are alike, and there’s a lot
of travel and plenty of challenges in the form of
unexpected situations and problems that cannot
be tracked down or rectified right away.
“It’s important that the communication with
the customers is precise, so that we have as accurate an idea as possible of the problem they
need help with,” he says. “At the same time,
you have to be aware that a given sound or
other warning sign can be a symptom of many
different problems. That’s a challenge too. You
have to be a bit of detective in this job.”
HARSH REALITY IS AN EXCELLENT
TEACHER
Stridh knew what he wanted to work with by
the time he was 14, and he trained to be a
motorcycle mechanic in upper-secondary
school. After school he went to Chile and
worked servicing tractors for about a year.
That period provided the best possible education in terms of finding good solutions to any
problem, regardless of the situation.
“If a tractor breaks down and stops in a field
of knee-high mud, you just have to accept
the situation and get to work,” Stridh says.
“My time in Chile was exciting, and working
in a country where people take fewer things
for granted than we may do in Sweden was a
real eye-opener. There are far fewer problems
stemming from excess consumption in Chile.”
Back home in Sweden, Stridh went back to
training as a service technician, which led to
an internship with Dynapac, including a stint
in Spain. Now Stridh has been working at
Dynapac for two years, and he really enjoys it.
He has a good understanding of the customers’ reality, where time is always money.
“A lot of customers stress about downtime,
and I understand that,” he says. “It feels great
to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Some people have preconceptions about
me when they first see me – I’m so young
– and it’s fun to be able to demonstrate my
experience and solve their problem.”
CUSTOMERS REQUIRE SERVICE
AGREEMENTS
Stridh finds that customer interest in service
agreements has grown. Large construction
companies in particular are subject to requirements from their own customers, who demand
that the machinery used be covered by service
agreements.
“The big ones, like Ramirent and Cramo, now
have service agreements,” Stridh says. “Some
customers are so fastidious about preventive
maintenance and keep their equipment so nice
that you practically want to take your shoes
off before you climb in. But there’s a broad
range. For instance, when you have multiple
drivers, no single one will take responsibility,
and the maintenance work gets neglected.”
A little after 9 am, the red Dynapac truck
pulls into the recycling station. An asphalt
paver is waiting to be serviced, and Stridh is
ready for the challenge. Four hours later, the
paver is back in action. The work crew from
NCC will be able to stay on schedule, and the
Dynapac truck rolls on to the next customer.
Three types of agreements offering tremendous options
DYNAPAC’S SERVICE OFFERING covers service, support
and organized expert knowledge to meet every customer’s
compacting, paving and finishing needs worldwide. Dynapac
currently offers service support agreements at three different
service levels, all aiming at being able to find the right solution
for each customer.
Dynapac’s customer support agreements are based on product knowledge and original spare parts, and guarantee uptime
and control over operating costs for the service life of the machine. The technical knowledge and experience in Dynapac’s
service network ensures that the service will be provided with
competence, attention and commitment.
Parts & Services Manager Krister Gröbacher sees increasing
interest in service support agreements, and points out that the
different agreement types all share the same goal: to ensure
and safeguard the customer’s operation of the machines.
“An agreement is a great way to avoid unplanned stoppages,”
Gröbacher says. “The customer can rely on his equipment, and
an agreement makes it easier to predict all your costs. In terms of
cost of ownership, it always pays to have a service agreement.”
Service customers also have access to the latest technical documentation, an online spare parts system and web-based maintenance cards for each machine’s serial number. Dynapac’s service
and maintenance are environmentally certified under ISO 14001.

a problem late yesterday evening, and I called our
service supervisor, who contacted Dynapac this

“The NCC crew here are great; they are easy-going and offer their
help whenever it’s needed. And in my job you have to get used to
having an ‘audience.’”

problems. Sometimes it’s a good idea to give your

terms of their specialized knowledge.”
“Communication with the customers is important, but our internal
communication within Dynapac is
just as important. The person who
receives the trouble report is not
always the person who later goes
out on the job, and communicating
internally helps ensure that we take
the right equipment along.”

center. “For a while I really thought we
would have to take it in to the service
center, but it worked out and it feels good.
It’s about seeing the possibilities and
looking for various conceivable solutions.“

Van der Spek has been a dealer and importer for Dynapac
road-construction machinery in the Netherlands for forty years.
Director Jan Nolles talks about trends in Dutch road construction,
and the role the dealer can and must play.
“Our strength lies in listening
carefully to our customers. In turn,
Dynapac listens to us, and the
results are always worthwhile.”

“DUTCH ROAD CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES have
traditionally been open to innovations. That is partly the
basis of the success of our import business. Representing
Dynapac in this extremely competitive market is a thankful task,” suggested Jan Nolles, Director of Van der Spek.
From a central location in the Netherlands, the company has
become a specialist importer and service organization for all
kinds of construction machines. “We stand out as importers
by representing a number of specially-selected brands in the
segments in which we are active – construction cranes, earthmoving, concrete, recycling and road-building. Our customers
can choose from the best of all worlds, we can offer them the
complete package because we also distribute road-repair &
maintenance machines.”
Listens to the customer
The dealer is a salesman but above all a link in the chain
between manufacturer and end user. Van der Spek adapts
pavers, planers and rollers from Dynapac to the demands of
the Dutch market, offers maintenance and training courses
and acts as messenger for its customers’ wishes and problems. “Our people are specialized troubleshooters,” Nolles
continues, “we have a very good cooperation with the factory,
together we always find solutions for problems. In a segment
where disruptions are unacceptable, and everything has to be
done faster and quieter while remaining more compact and
more sustainable, service is key. Our strength lies in listening
carefully to our customers. In turn, Dynapac listens to us, and
the results are always worthwhile. Dutch operators speak their
mind and are open to innovations, as reflected for example in
many of the features of the latest pavers like the SD115C and
SD135C.”
Prefer compact tracked machines
prefer tracked machines. These machines must also be
compact, because here we are allowed to transport rollers
and pavers on a single low loader. Essential wish list items are
excellent compaction, traction, stability and wear-proofness.
“And Dynapac always scores well when it comes to wearresistance,” commented Nolles. “In the Netherlands, wearresistance is so important because of the widespread use of
porous asphalt; the sharp stones are a real trial for wear parts.
Everyone wants reliability and whenever necessary rapid
service, because downtimes cost money.”
As Nolles explained, the influence of the people working the
machine on the decision to buy should never be underestimated in the Netherlands. “Bosses listen to the operators. A wise
move because this work is all about emotion and the stress
caused by time pressure and other road users rushing by
the jobsite – often far too fast. The asphalt teams want to be
recognized for their professionalism and feel very much at one
with their equipment. That means that today’s pavers must
look modern and be comfortable and quiet. In addition, Dutch
operators seem to get on well with computer controls with
GPS backup and fully-automated functions.”
Maintenance market
The densely-populated Netherlands, with its fine-meshed
infrastructure, is above all a maintenance market. Against that
background, Nolles is delighted that Dynapac, with its new
planers, seems keen to tackle that part of the market, too. As
Nolles commented, “That keenness is reflected in recent sales
of planers which could well represent a major breakthrough in
promoting more combined sales. After all, for our customers, a
one-stop shopping opportunity for the full range of equipment
is an appealing idea.”
Because of the soft underfoot conditions, Dutch customers
RASENBERG ADDS AN SD135C PAVER TO ITS DF115C FLEET
Hendrik Post, Facility Manager at Rasenberg, said of the company’s
latest purchase, “for pure value for money, last year we purchased two
DF115CS with a 3-meter screed plus extensions for extra width, so
buying an SD135C was the next logical step. The more powerful engines make life even easier when paving up to 8m 30 in a single run.”

The Red Element Campaign

When Dynapac became part of the Atlas Copco
Group in 2007, product innovation and design
quickly became a top priority. Atlas Copco’s Industrial Design Group got involved and in close cooperation with D&D departments at Dynapac, a new design
language was created; the Red Element. During
2009, Dynapac is taking new products and solutions
on a global tour. The name for the tour was an easy
choice; Dynapac Red Element Tour 2009!
THE RED ELEMENT symbolizes the things that make Dynapac unique.
The cornerstones of the new design concept are a combination of
defined shapes, a logic behind proportions and the color of components.
The Red Element expresses core attributes such as bold, differentiated,
unified, defined and dynamic.
The Red Element Tour 2009 consists of numerous VIP customer
events, open houses, knowledge seminars and exhibitions all over the
world. In France, VIP customer events were held in 8 different locations
during the spring months of April and May.
In China, Red Element activities have included lectures about
Compactasphalt, customer days and open houses with equipment
testing on site.
In Southern Africa the Red Element Tour is still ongoing with 4 hugely
successful customer days in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and in
the city of Gabarone, Botswana.
Another great event was the recently held customer event in Astana in
Kazakhstan where more than 100 specially invited customers received
much information about new products and new trends in road construction. This event was held in cooperation with Dynapac dealer Turkuaz
Machinery.
All in all, several thousand customers in 20 markets have visited the
various Red Element activities so far. There have been some great
events in all corners of the world with a lot of interaction and positive
remarks regarding the new design concept. With the attendance and
valuable feedback received from so many interested customers, we will
work even harder to develop products and solutions that meet customer
needs both from a global as well as local perspective.

CompLogger - hand held compaction control system
New hand held compaction control system Complogger is a soil
compaction analyzer providing the customer with a real time image
of compaction for the entire surface to be compacted.
THE EASY TO USE CompLogger can be
used for production planning and throughout compaction. Further, the data can be
saved for future quality control and evaluation. Based on Dynapac´s existing Compaction Meter and Compaction Analyzer, the
new hand held system is an industry first
and features a rugged PDA and wireless
data transfer technology.
Hand held
The new hand held facility is an easy to
use, simplified version of the fully comprehensive Dynapac Compaction Analyzer
System (DCA) which allows the operator to
continuously read a direct feedback of the
compaction results; enhancing the operators’
efficiency and compaction performance.
Compaction results identifying possible
problem areas are illuminated with userfriendly graphics.
Areas showing a poor compaction result
are quickly identified allowing additional
passes. If the compaction value does not
improve, the operator is alerted and able
to address the problem before the next
layer is laid. This way the operator is able
to recognize and correct any problems
whilst the machines are on-site. To return to
the project and correct the compaction problems at a later date is both expensive
and creates additional delays.
It is able to accommodate and evaluate
a wide spectrum of parameters. These
include rolling direction, rolling speed,
vibration frequency and amplitude as well
as the Compaction Meter Value (CMV) as
measured by the roller,

Prestigious award to
new Dynapac SD paver
The well established Polish trade fair ”Infrastructure
2009” was held in Warsaw in October 2009. During
the fair all exhibitors were invited to participate in
the competition for the Minister of Infrastructure’s
awards.
THE AWARD IS divided into 6 categories:
- Infrastructure investments
- Safety of road traffic management
- Machines and construction equipment
- Materials and raw materials for road building
- Handicapped friendly road infrastructure
- Road and public utility facilities equipment
Dynapac entered the competition in the
category for machines and construction
equipment with new paver SD135C.
An independent jury reviewed all contributions including machine demonstrations and
customer benefit presentations. In tough
competition with other innovative construc-
tion machines, the Dynapac SD135C was
finally selected as winner.
Presenting Dynapac with the award, the jury
referred to the paver´s great functionality and
innovative solutions as well as its high operator
comfort. Winning the award has lead to even
more requests from interested customers.

pneumatic tyred rollers with enhanced
operator efficiency and excellent end result.
THE ROLLERS are equipped with
a spacious platform with operatorfriendly controls plus a rotating and
sideways sliding seat and steering
assembly. As an option, a comfortable cab provides outstanding
all-round visibility with the added
benefit of either air conditioning or
automatic climate control.
The CP series are powered by
the very latest stage 3A compliant engines which offer reduced
emissions as well as low levels of
ambient noise thanks to the use of
thermostatically controlled cooling
fans. The quality of the finished
surface is further enhanced by an
ultra-smooth start/stop system.
The machines incorporate
several new features designed to
enhance efficiency, serviceability,
safety and operator comfort as well
as producing perfect compaction
results.
A dual-circuit braking system, a
Dynapac only feature, maintains
full braking effect even if one

Ask
the
Expert
Ronald Utterodt is application manager for paver
applications. He is located at Dynapac Competence
Center in Wardenburg, Germany. Ronald is a recognized
expert with more than 20 years’ experience of road
construction projects.
So what does it entail to be an application expert in pavers?
In my position I have several different roles. I spend a lot of time out
in the field where I guide and support customers on site so that they
can achieve the best possible paving results under many different
conditions. I have consulted paving customers in a wide variety of
projects, from major highway projects to paving of bridges, tunnels
and airports.
Is research and development part of your responsibility?
Yes, application-related research and development is a big part of
my job. At present I am involved in a number of different research
projects, where Dynapac is cooperating with technical universities
and academic research institutions. We investigate and analyze new
and better methods of laying asphalt. This is very exciting and over
the years it has resulted in quite a few innovations, both related to
equipment and to application processes.
Have you been involved in developing the Compactasphalt®
method?
Yes I have, and this is a good example of a method that is gaining
ground worldwide because it really improves the laying process.
Compactasphalt® is finalized as a development project but I am
still active in supporting customers testing the method and getting
the best results. In terms of future-oriented projects there are many
other interesting things being evaluated right now that might result
in new ways of laying asphalt.
You are a member of
Dynapac Visionary board?
Yes, we organize Visionary Board
seminars with leading professors
and other experts in road development.
The purpose is to discuss and exchange information about new trends
and developments regarding asphalt processes, materials and
methods. We also keep a close eye on all new legislation and
directives, and how these might influence our area of work. Since we
are a global company, we can also transfer new ideas and methods
from one region to another, and transfer knowledge between different
parts of the world.
Are you also involved in training?
Road Construction is a knowledge business, and we need well trained
people to be able to support the customers in a good way. Our training
academy is called Dynapac Campus and I am quite often involved in
Campus training courses, which I enjoy very much.
It sounds like you have a busy job?
Yes, I often wish that my day consisted of more than 24 hours! We
have come a long way in the area of asphalt paving, but much still
remains. It is a very interesting thought to imagine what kind of solutions we will be able to offer our customers 5 years from now.
Process-secure automated road building – PAST
The extensive mechanization of the construction industry during the past 40 years has
led to major changes in the construction process and a noticeable development in road
construction machinery. Through the PAST project, Professor Ulrich in cooperation with
Dynapac Competence Center investigates how the interaction between materials and
machinery can be further developed.

TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS in road
building equipment were previously based on
empirical studies and development. However the
increasing demand for higher performance and
improved quality can only be met by using scientifically proven methods. This is why process
thinking - in manufacturing, transports, paving
and compaction of hot asphalt mixes - becomes
essential for success.
The goal is to ensure that each and every step of
the process delivers at a pre-defined qualitylevel,
ensuring a correct mix temperature.

This can only be achieved if the asphalt is
paved and compacted under conditions good
enough to reach the desired quality level.
The research project “PAST” was started, for
the purpose of examining the interaction between machine and material parameters.
The main objective for the project is to investigate the current state and develop, not only the
means to improve machines and methods to achieve better results, but also the means to register
and document these improvements.
The registration must be done in a way so that
the temperature measurements can be recorded
and traced throughout the entire asphalt laying
process. The aim is to map the process in order to
facilitate the use of technical solutions to reduce
heat loss and eventually to be able to reduce the
production temperatures of the asphalt mix. The
layer thickness is intended to be measured using
an electro-magnetic device and all other relevant
parameters will also be recorded to enable full
traceability of the final product.
The initiative behind the project came
from Prof. Dr.-Ing Alfred Ulrich. Prof Ulrich
has represented the faculty of Oil Hydraulics
and Earth moving Equipment and the Institute
for Land Machines and Regenerative Energy
Technology at the University of applied
science in Cologne since 2006. The main
focus lies in training and research into mobile
equipment, off-road drive systems, mobile
hydraulics as well as the use and development
of mechatronic systems.

experience of the design and manufacture
of machine systems for building material
machines with mechanical, hydraulic and
electrical drive systems as well as the electrohydraulic control of feeding technology. He
also specializes in the strategies and methods
of product development and the management
of this process
Global manufacturing and
new facilities in the US and India
The Dynapac manufacturing strategy follows our
service and support philosophy; we want to be close to
our customers. Today, Dynapac equipment is produced
in 7 countries across the world. Factories are located in
Sweden, Germany, France, USA, Brazil, China and India.
THE DYNAPAC MACHINERY is produced utilizing the same
production concepts and quality assurance processes, independent
of factory or country. The product program however looks slightly
different in different regions, with additional options and models
available to satisfy specific requirements in local markets.
In September last year a new production facility for Dynapac rollers was inaugurated in Nasik, India. Since then, production has
continued to expand in the Nasik factory, both in number of rollers
produced and through addition of new models.
GARLAND, USA
NASIK, INDIA
In the US production was transferred from San Antonio to Garland
earlier this year. The new Dynapac assembly operation now resides
at Atlas Copco´s modern production unit for drilling equipment.
Products manufactured in Garland are Dynapac CA rollers and new
North American pavers that are introduced to the market in early
2010. Atlas Copco´s distribution center for North America is situated in Allen, a 15 minute drive from Garland. This modern distribution center is supplying Dynapac customers with daily deliveries of
light and concrete equipment as well as with spare parts.
Light & Concrete equipment transferred to
Atlas Copco Construction Tools
From October 1, 2009, operational responsibility for Dynapac light compaction and concrete
products is transferred to Atlas Copco Construction Tools Division. The Dynapac light and concrete
product range fits in very well with the existing range of demolition tools, pumps and accessories.
DYNAPAC LIGHT & CONCRETE products are used for minor
construction work, renovation and more. Combined with the Atlas
Copco Construction Tools range, construction customers will have
a broad selection of high quality tools, all from one division.

match for the Construction Tools organization in terms of customer
segments and ways of doing business. This enables us to increase
our focus even more on the light construction market segment,”
