Listening your productions, your musical imaginary seems to be an interesting and
personal mix of the first “French Touch” scene and the Electro Pop and Disco
from the 80ies... Please explain us how you’re arrived to “your sound”, revealing
your most important steps, musical influences from the past and contemporary
artists that you appreciate or consider “new classics”...
Thanks. I think its just a mixture of music that I love but presented in a dance music format.
I really try and come up with powerful melodies and hooks so that everything sort of fits like
a jigsaw. Big influences are Daft Punk (yeah like everyone else), Human League, Fleetwood
Mac, etc. I try and put in clever twists with melodies and chord inversions.
I suppose my recent sound was based on big 80s drum machine sounds and brass sounds with
a strong synthesizer leaning. Recently I’ve been developing this more and taking in more of a
90s club influence to really bring my production to a new dimension as this whole 80’s thing
is starting to get a little tired.
For current music I think Bag Raiders - Nil By Mouth (Knightlife Remix) is an absolute
classic…same with Lifelike & Kris Menace - Discopolis e Midnight Magic – Beam Me Up
(Jacques Renault Remix).
Your
debut album,
“Heartbeats”,
was released almost one year ago, so maybe it
could be the right time for a balance.
Are you remained satisfied of the results
(sound/production, sales and critics) obtained from the album?
And what about your new releases planned for the next months?
The album has attained a strong cult following and we got some great reviews, and sales
have been good. I’m not signed to a major label so its hard to compete with their incredible
media power…(for example see Jessie J…awful but you cant escape her).
So I have been working on lots of new music including a few tracks which hopefully will
become singles. I’m pushing for an EP this summer but we’ll see. I’ve also been busy with
loads of remixes including one for Howard Jones (incredible 80’s popstar!).

Tell us more about the two videos for the “Heartbeats” singles, “Through the
night” and “Can’t shake this feeling”... How do you enter in contact with The
General Assembly, the L.A. based duo that directed both the videos? The videos
have an ironic/parodistic mood of the classic 80ies movies... Are you a fan of this
kind of films or what? If yes, which are your favourite ones of that period?
To be honest I’m not massively into music videos but my manager found some these guys
had done previously…I loved the style and film treatment so was up for getting them to
work on a vid for us. They mostly came up with the ideas with a little direction from us,
so all credit to them! As a child of the 80’s, my favourite movies have to be Big and Flight
of the Navigator.
Which is the “story” behind the choice of your moniker? It seems like a “slang
manipulation” of your real name, Graeme, or what?
Yeah this began as a nick name of sorts while i was at uni…it seemed to stick so I just used it
as my artist name.
You’re a very well known and requested remixer too. Your list of “patients” is very
large and eclectic, including worldwide popstar like Lady Gaga, David Bowie or
Pet Shop Boys and indie sensations like Passion Pit, Friendly Fires or Everything
Everything...
Which is your first rule in the art of the remix? Do you change approach according
to the “status” of the artist that you have to remix or not?
I love remixing pop songs. I generally strip everything back so I’ve got just the vocal and
then write new music which works with it, so its almost like my version of the song rather
than a remix. The only thing I think about when choosing remixes is if I like the song (or if
I don’t, can I do something cool with it!).
What about your set? Do you usually include (mix) your productions, edits with
selections from other artists or what? Is it (totally/partially) prepared in advance
or is in “real time”?
My set is based around my own songs and remixes with loads of current music thrown in
too. I tend to do edits of most things I play to keep the energy high. I usually choose my
first couple of tracks but from then on I just vibe off the crowd to see what works…its much
more fun that way.

You
have chosen a super crazy and provocative moniker for your musical
adventure and, if it could be possible, your sound is even more peculiar and

catchy... Please tell us more about the “genesis” of the
set?
project’s name and your music, including influences and contemporary artist
strong fanbase in
that you appreciate. And last the reasons of the “transfiguration” of your name
from the “explicit” Crazy Penis to the more “mysterious” Crazy P...
A we really should make up an interesting story with regards to how the name was born as
it is simply quite straightforward; the name was originally “Loco Pingo” vaguely translating
as “Crazy Penis”...there we go! We were having difficulty in promoting the name-we were
refused radio play and it was eventually decided than rather lose the name totally we would
drop the “enis”...leaving the “P” standing tall!
We have all had similar influences and our tastes in music seem to move together. From
Stevie Wonder, Rufus, Jamie Lidell, LCD, Soul Clap, Erdbeerschnitzel, Wolf and Lamb,
Julio Bashmore, Detroit House, the NY Disco movement Paradise Garage, balearic, techno,
folk, pop; there continues to be a stunning selection of new music, too huge to name all, but
the old references can sometimes be the most influential.
During your fifteen years of career you’ve released stuff for several labels,
like 2020 Vision, Paper Recordings or Shiva Records... Please put order in your
discography for us, selecting your “key moments” (tracks, edits or albums ) and
motivating these choices...
I dont think it would be fair of me to select on behalf of the rest of the band, but i think
“A Nice Hot Bath With” was an album which was conceived in a wonderfully fruitful period of
quality house music-a mainly instrumental album after which the lads decided they wanted
to take the music live and so they brought the vocals onboard for the second album “The
Wicked is Music”. “You Are We” is still a hugely requested track as is started something.
Shiva saw Jim and Chris experimental successfully with other vocalists and Tim Davies,
the bass player wrote a couple of quality tunes for the “A Night on Earth” album. “Lady T”
still makes it into the set and is always a crowd pleaser. I think we have steadily progressed
and the most recent album, “Stop Space Return” has brought us to a more live house sound.
For me “Stop Space Return” is a winner as is love on the line.
Which
are the most important differences
(approach,
equipment, music styles...) that we can find (notice) when you play live or a dj-
You’re from Nottingham, UK, but during these years you have built up a
Australia... How it has happened? And do you have a favourite
country, festival or venue for your “perfect gig”?
The lads have their studio in Nottingham, they have been there for near 15 years now. “Notts”
was a stronghold of house music in the late 90’s early 2000’s so it made sense to be around
lots of creative types.
Yes Australia is a country where the people love the outdoors. They have great summers and
so reliable festivals and outdoor parties. Our music lends itself to a good bbq as it has that
summery feel to it. Paper recordings are mainly responsible for introducing us to Australia
as miles and ben used to go frequently djing and after they played a couple of our tunes out
there, there was a demand for the live band to go over.
It would be difficult to name one place as Eastern Europe and turkey have been very enjoyable
but maybe our favourite for a number of reasons is the Garden Festival in Petricane, Croatia.
Theres a gret family unity and it is a very beautiful place which promotes good love.
What about your new releases, planned for the 2011? Your last album, “Stop
Space Return”, was released long time ago, three years ago by now...
We are currently working on new material for the new album which we hope will be due out
in September. A lovely melancholic mix of soul with a deeper sound on the housier tracks.
We have no name yet so suggestions on a postcard.
