MOLONG CENTRAL SCHOOL “Providing Opportunities for Personal Achievement” NEWSLETTER Phone: 6366 8224 Fax: 6366 8220 email: [email protected] Kindergarten to Year 12 Issue No: 35 5th November, 2015 NEW BEGINNNINGS & FINAL FAREWELLS This week we welcome 2016 Kindergarten students to Molong Central. Whilst many parents are excited about the prospect of their young ones starting school it can be a daunting experience for some, especially if the child is the first one in the family to start school. There was an opportunity on Wednesday to ask questions and to become more familiar with the routines that school provides. Year 12 sign-out day is Thursday and the Year 12 Graduation evening is on Friday Night. This much anticipated event has been coordinated by Mr Horner and the students, parents and I are looking forward to sharing this significant milestone with the graduates and their families. Students are reminded that if they would like to discuss their future career opportunities or need help interpreting their HSC results they should call the school and make an appointment. We are happy to help our students ensure they make the most of post school opportunities. MOLONG ROTARY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITES FOR OUR STUDENTS The Honeywell Engineering Summer School is run by the Institute of Engineers and provides students with a practical engineering experience at Universities and engineering sites. Tarryn Miles and Ben Kirk (please see picture above)have been selected to join other young people from around the state to gain a better understanding of engineering as a University and career option as well as broadening their horizons. Throughout the week students are introduced to five universities including the University of New South Wales who is the host University for the Program. Rotary promote this opportunity and provide financial support to assist the students. Thanks must go to Mrs Clark for identifying appropriate students and assisting with the application process. ASSESSMENTS & EXAMINATIONS This is a particularly busy period of time for students and teachers as Yearly Assessments and Examinations dominate the School Calender. For parents who have children who face difficulties with organisation this can be a difficult time for the whole family. Year Advisors can help students formulate a plan to ensure deadlines are met and the homework centre can be accessed to prepare for an examination or complete an assessment. The Open Girls and Boys MCS cricket teams travelled to Dubbo for the Super 8’s competition. This tournament is run by Cricket Australia to help promote the game and to give students an opportunity to participate in a shortened version of the game. Both of our sides were made up of students from a variety of year groups, making our teams two of the youngest in the competition. The boys’ team won three games and lost two by narrow margins. As a result of these scores, MCS placed second overall and have made it to the State Finals to be played in early December. The girls’ side played four games, with the highlight being the victory against Trundle. They have also been invited to play in the State Finals. A number of our students have not played cricket before and picked up the skills and concepts very quickly. Congratulations to both sides that represented MCS proudly! We look forward to participating to the best of our ability in the finals! LEAGUE TAG 7’s Ten of our finest League Tag players travelled to Grenfell to compete in the Grenfell 7’s, run by the NRL. There were over 300 students participating in this competition from schools in the Western Area. Our ‘young’ U/16’s team played exceptionally well against some of the larger high schools and represented our school exceptionally well. Once again I felt a strong sense of pride as the highest levels of sportsmanship were on display at all times as our students who conceded just 3 tries throughout the day. Unfortunately we missed making the final by just 1 try, which is an outstanding effort! Game 1 - MCS vs Parkes Christian School, Molong win 7-0 Game 2 - MCS vs Parkes High School, draw 0-0 Game 3 - MCS vs Henry Lawson, Molong win 2-1 Game 4 – MCS vs Redbend College, Redbend win 2-1 We look forward to 2016 as 8 of the 10 girls will be eligible to play in this tournament again. Congratulations on an outstanding effort, girls!!! Thank you to Miss Ford for assisting with travel to and from the event. DAY FOR DANIEL Last Thursday, K-6 students and staff came to school dressed in red to remember Daniel Morcombe. It was wonderful to see everyone put in a real effort for this day of remembrance and an awareness that we need to keep our children safe. Belinda Bostock, our Police Liaison Officer, also spoke to the students at our assembly about Stranger Danger. All students interacted with her questions and discussions and it was wonderful to see how responsibly our students acted towards the issue. A big thankyou to Belinda for coming along to speak with us. It has been pleasing to see many other 2015 CBCA titles being borrowed by Primary students during lessons. Just a reminder that Secondary students’ studies for their exams would benefit from referring back to some of the modules they covered earlier in the year in the ELES Study Skills Handbook online.
