O
n December 5, Joyce
Seely delivered 152
gift-filled shoeboxes
to ACCESS to be delivered
to our seniors and disabled
clients during the holidays.
She is busy all through the year
assembling those boxes. A few
of her friends and her sister help
purchase items, put the boxes
together and wrap them. She
always includes items that she
makes herself, such as lavender
sachets, coffee mugs, gloves,
puzzle books, pens and pencils,
small stuffed animals, photo
albums and frames, candy, and
seniors & disabled
other items.
This year, her donation was in
memory of her mother who
recently passed away.
always enjoyed the company of
seniors and too often finds that
they have become the forgotten.
“I feel they should be honored for
all they have gone through
and survived. This is my
way of letting them know
someone is thinking of
them.”
Joyce’s original volunteer
history was with animal
organizations. She has
volunteered at Jackson County
Animal Care and Control and she
and a friend even started Spay
and Neuter Your Pet and Animals
in Distress.
“The last few years I shifted my
focus to ACCESS after discovering
how important they were to
those caring for someone who is
ill and realizing you can borrow
medical equipment from them.”
ACCESS wants to thank you
Joyce! It’s people like you who
make our efforts possible.
“This is my way of letting
them know someone is
thinking of them.”
“I actually started doing this
a couple of years ago as my
mother’s health was failing and
I was taking care of her,” she
says. “I often felt helpless to stop
what was happening to her, but

Real people. Real stories. Real help.
As government leaders at all levels
struggle to balance revenues with
necessary services, our community is
having many-layered conversations
about human services. I recently heard
a comment that “the safety net is
not a hammock.” There is a common
stereotype that people receiving certain
forms of government help are lying
about drinking beer and waiting for the
unemployment or welfare check to come
in the mail.
But, the reality is often much different. As
I wrote here recently, poverty has a job
in Jackson County. Nearly three-fourths
of the ACCESS clients last year work full
or part time. This has taken on more
meaning for me as I have gone about my
daily life here in the Rogue Valley. I often
wear my ACCESS jacket and these are
some of the stories I have heard.
The gentleman who came to repair
my refrigerator shared with me that he
was unemployed for months. Friends
suggested that he come to ACCESS for
help. He had never sought assistance
before, but told me he was grateful that
we were able to help him get by during a
couple of tough months. Now that he is
back at work, he intends to give back.
The woman who served my breakfast
at a local restaurant told me that when
her husband left her with two young
children, ACCESS helped her get into
an apartment that she could afford.
The man who waited on me at the
paint store this weekend said that his
hours had been cut back and he had
an appointment the following week
at ACCESS, hoping to get help with his
utility bill.
The grocery store, the dry cleaners, the
gas station, the Wal-Mart are places
where I hear these kinds of stories. It
helps me remember that behind our
statistics are men and women working
hard to make ends meet. At ACCESS we
are privileged to give them a hand.

Letters
Hello, ACCESS:
The enclosed
donation is a small
way of saying thank
you for the transfer
bench which we
borrowed from
you and have now
returned. The use
of it was greatly
appreciated.
Thank you,
— Cleve
Dear Members of the Board,
Please accept the enclosed small check in appreciation of the
wonderful work you are doing to provide medical equipment
for seniors and disabled people in the Rogue Valley.
My dad was able to visit me recently, after my mom’s recent
death, and we hope he’ll eventually move to be near me or
my sister.
We couldn’t have had such a successful, safe visit without the
medical supplies you loaned us for the week he was here.
Please use the enclosed check to buy parts for repairing the
medical equipment so that more people may benefit, and
more equipment can be recycled.
Sincerely,
—Jacqueline

“Without the
program, I would not
be sitting here today.”
ACCESS “Gatekeepers”
watching out for seniors
A
CCESS Senior Outreach
Service offers a Gatekeeper
Program that is part of its
community effort to identify
seniors in need. The goal of this
program is to have community
members keep their eyes
and ears alert for seniors at
risk, particularly those who
are isolated, living alone and
potentially in need of some
type of assistance to maintain
their independence.
The most common indicators
that a senior may be in need
are listed below. Gatekeepers
could directly observe any one
factor or combination of the
following:
• Unkempt appearance
• Strong odors on person and/
or in home
• Depression, confusion,
forgetfulness
• Substance abuse
• Caregiver stress
• Financial and social problems
• Physical losses
• Yard and/or pets neglected
• Home needs repair
• Newspapers and/or mail left
untouched
These individuals do not
self-refer. Early identification
of at-risk elders can prevent
premature institutionalization,
abuse and neglect.
Whenever possible,
Gatekeepers are asked
to provide the following
information when they call
ACCESS:
• Elder’s name and phone
number
• Age, if known
• Address or directions
to Elder’s residence or
whereabouts
• A brief description of concerns
• Gatekeeper’s name, telephone
number and address
The role of the gatekeeper ends
here. They have provided an
important first step: identifying
the vulnerable adult and calling
ACCESS. At this point, the
Senior Outreach lead, Barbara,
follows through by contacting
Senior and Disability Services
or doing a home visit to assess
the situation and then follows
through with appropriate
referrals to address the need or
concern.
We all have an obligation
to help those most in need.
Forcing assistance is not our
goal, but the elderly deserve to
be informed of alternatives and
options that will preserve their
independence and enhance
their quality of life. Serving as
a Gatekeeper is an excellent
way to establish good public
relations. In addition, taking
part in a cooperative effort
to maintain the dignity and
independence of at-risk elders
can be a personally rewarding
and satisfying experience.
For more information about the
Gatekeeper Program, please
contact Barbara at 541-774-4324.
“Y
ears ago, this house was a
sort of oasis in the middle of
orchards and farm fields,” said Katy. “It
certainly wasn’t a Medford, suburban
neighborhood like it is now.”
Katy has lived in her house since she was
five years old and she now owns it.
“This house is my sanctuary,” she says
contentedly.
Last year, Katy almost lost her home.
After losing a roommate who paid rent,
her income was just enough to pay her
mortgage with nothing left over to pay
bills, heat her home or even buy food.
“I knew that I needed to bring down my
payment in order to be able to live by
myself,” she said.
Katy heard about ACCESS on television.
She came in, and after some counseling
and paperwork, she qualified for a loan
modification. A few problems came
up during the process, but Katy says
ACCESS employees Gary and Lorena
helped out tremendously.
“When I got that letter that told me my
mortgage had been lowered, I could not
have been happier,” smiled Katy. “Then
I knew I could take care of myself. I was
in such danger of losing my house. And
without the program, I would not be
sitting here today.”
Katy said she tells anyone who needs
help about ACCESS. I call ACCESS the
“angel organization,” she says smiling.
“They helped me get back on my feet
and keep the most important thing I
own. I can’t thank them enough.”

house, which she has

Giving “Spirit”
O
n a recent Friday in early November,
seven managers from the local
Marriott hotels came together to
volunteer at ACCESS. In two hours, this
group repacked 3,200 pounds of food
from food drives and boxed and sorted
4,900 pounds of squash (donated from
Seven Oaks Farms) and 1,000 pounds of
cabbage.
They were participating in Marriott’s
annual “Spirit to Serve Day,” in which
Marriott associates from across the
world take a day to give back to their
respective local communities. The four
local hotels choose to exhibit a spirit of
giving throughout the year by donating
their time and resources to Rogue
Valley charities, including ACCESS. Over
the last two years, they have donated
over 2,000 pounds of food, 229 pounds
of soap, and $225 to ACCESS. Many
of these donations come from the
generosity of the hotel’s staff.
These volunteers were helping out with
what is called a “food repack.” They
assist with the most basic part of our
mission — getting food to the people
who need it most. Many donations
need sorting, repacking, labeling or
other types of processing before they
are ready to be sent to hunger-relief
agencies. That’s where this Marriott
group came in! Thank you Marriott!
Another ACCESS Dream$avers Program Success Story:
Rogue Print Shop
A
fter a few minutes with Rogue
Print Shop owner Chris, you
feel like the world isn’t such a
bad place. Sure, you’ll see lots of
machinery and paper stacked
around, rolls of plastic hanging
on the walls, and scraps strewn
on the floor. But you’ll also see
Chris’s great smile and hear his
enthusiasm for what he does.
He’s very smart, too. He has
worked in the printing industry
for quite a few years and opened
Rogue Print Shop last March. Now
he has a thriving business on his
hands, and it suits him just fine.
Chris is one of ACCESS’s first
business goal graduates in the
Dream$avers Program. He found
out about the program through
the Southern Oregon University
Small Business Development
Center. Dream$avers is an
Individual Development Account
Program. The accounts are
matched savings accounts that
enable lower income families to
save money, build assets, and
improve their lives. When you
make deposits in your account,
three times the amount you
deposit is set aside for you in a
separate account. This money
can be used for a down payment
or other costs of a first time
home purchase, or to pay for
costs of higher education or skill
training. With an Education IDA
or Homeownership IDA, you can
save up to $2,000 and receive
$6,000 in matched money for a
total of $8,000.
With the funding Chris secured,
he was able to buy quite a few
necessary pieces of equipment
that the shop required.
“It definitely helped my business,”
he says. He also received
assistance in coming up with
a realistic business plan. Chris
worked with Elisha, who works at
ACCESS in the Southern Oregon
Housing Resource Center. “She
was very knowledgeable and
helpful,” Chris says.
Rogue Print Shop is doing so well,
that Chris is moving the business
from his current 600-squarefoot building to a 3,000-squarefoot facility on South Central in
Medford.

Donate quilt batting to
help keep people warm
We featured a story on Stan Stromberg in our
Winter 2010 newsletter. He is the man in his
80’s who continues to create and donate his
handmade quilts to ACCESS to help keep our
local residents warm. We’d like to keep those
beautiful quilts coming, but Stan needs quilt
batting to continue sewing them.
If you would like to donate batting for Stan,
please bring it to the ACCESS front desk, and
we will make sure he gets it. Stan—and our
chilly clients—would sure appreciate it.

That’s right—45 chickens of multiple varieties. forty-one are
hens and four are roosters.
“I have more eggs than I know what to do with. I don’t know

She says a friend told her she should really keep some
chickens. So she went down to the local feed store and
bought 20 chicks. The rest is history.

Lewella says her chickens lay about three

Let Your Wishes Be Known
What You Need to Know About A Will

ACCESS’s Barbara Bieg with Trudy LeBlanc
of the American Sewing Guild
Sewing Guild Donating
Time and Skills to Help
People in Need
T
he Southern Oregon Chapter of the
American Sewing Guild members
work year-round on quilts, pajamas, lap
robes, neck rolls, hats, and toiletry bags—
all to donate to various social service
organizations around the Rogue Valley.
The women actually put in approximately
3,000 hours of sewing time every six
months.
This past December, they were at ACCESS
in the Olsrud Nutrition Center filling up 98
beautiful handmade bags to the brim with
all kinds of supplies. The ladies donated all
the bags to ACCESS which delivers them
to our senior and disabled clients. They
also gave 27 quilts, 15 armchair caddies, 15
bed organizers, and 13 neck rolls.
The ladies have also offered to make
ACCESS not one, but two new Santa Claus
suits for next year’s Greystone Christmas
event.
“These ladies are amazing,” said Barbara
Bieg, senior and disabled outreach lead
for ACCESS Support Services. “They have
been donating items to us for more than
a decade. It’s one of the sweetest things
they do.”
id you know that sixty
percent of Americans
die without a valid will—
leaving their family and
friends to deal with the
frustrating probate process?
Without a Will (or Trust),
state laws will determine
the distribution of your
estate according to “their”
formula—not your wishes.
Don’t let that happen to you
or your family.
Estate Planning or having a Will
is not just for seniors or wealthy
people—it’s an important
process we all need to do to
protect those we care about and
for specifying your charitable
interests. A Will confirms your
desires on how you want your
estate distributed and who will
represent your wishes. It should
also include a Power of Attorney
and Health care Directives
to protect you under special
circumstances.
Writing a Will can be a simple
process, depending on your
assets and distributions. It is best
to get the advice of a professional
when making your estate plans.
Here are some GOOD reasons
for having a Will:
• Having someone know and
represent your wishes
• Securing the financial future of
your spouse or significant other
• Providing support for family,
friends or those with special
needs—especially minors
• Providing continuing financial
support to your favorite
charities
• Making your intentions
clear—avoiding lawsuits,
misrepresentation and
confusion
• Preserving your privacy
Reasons to update your Will/
Trust:
• Marriage/divorce/deaths
• Health issues for you or your
loved ones
• Change in beneficiaries of
retirement plans (i.e. change
jobs)
• Business partnerships (new or
change)
• Keeping up with changes in
state/federal laws
