Annual Report to the River Communities 2014
Sustainable Growth Annual Report ___________________________ A Message from River Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Ben Moore III T he challenges of the emerging health care environment are intense, all-consuming and to some, overwhelming. Our River Hospital family could easily have looked upon this set of daunting changes with the eye of a pessimist. Fortunately our choice, driven by our unrelenting desire to serve our communities and our patients, has led us in the opposite direction. For the last several years our Board of Trustees, Medical Staff and our employees have been hard at work analyzing our abilities, assessing our opportunities, and ultimately developing and implementing a strategic plan that not just addresses the challenges of the future, it embraces the future with enthusiasm and confidence. “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” -Winston Churchill A recent article in the media may have caused some to question our optimistic perspective. This article listed River Hospital as one of several hospitals facing closure if Vital Access Provider (VAP) funds are not approved as part of the New York State budget for 2015-2016. Apparently the list considered recipients of New York State Interim Access Assurance Funds (IAAF) as highly vulnerable institutions likely to face closure if additional funding such as VAP funding was not forthcoming. River Hospital was indeed a recipient of IAAF funds during the current state fiscal year. These funds were utilized to assist with transforming our operations to enhance our service to our communities. Our transformation activities included expanding our mental health services, improving our information systems capabilities, and initiating collaboration efforts with Claxton-Hepburn Hospital. We have been very pleased with our progress in all of these areas and as a result we are a much more robust institution with a bright future. While the absence of future VAP funds would be a great disappointment to us and delay the final achievement of our transformation activities, we would not face closure. River Hospital has spent the last several years preparing for the future with an emphasis on primary care, mental health, physical therapy, and other vital community services such as emergency care and outpatient diagnostic and treatment services. We are well positioned to thrive now and into the foreseeable future. While health care institutions are facing significant challenges, we had the foresight to anticipate these changes, and the wisdom to create and implement a sound strategic plan to address the new health care environment. We look forward with enthusiasm and confidence to continuing to serve our communities with professional and compassionate care. River Hospital – governed, managed, and staffed by capable and prepared optimists. RIVER HOSPITAL | ANNUAL REPORT W ith continuous change and challenge on the horizon for North Country hospitals, River Hospital and Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center are working proactively to formalize ongoing collaborations. In November of 2014 River Hospital and Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center formalized their intent to move forward in a collaboration designed to integrate health care delivery in their respective St. Lawrence River communities. Board members and leadership have met to evaluate the benefits of such a collaboration. The collaboration discussions build upon an existing relationship between River Hospital and Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center. Currently Dr. Kiri Brandy practices general surgery at both facilities. Dr. Michael Seidman, who specializes in nephrology, offers office consultations at River Hospital on a monthly basis. Other specialists from Claxton-Hepburn currently provide care in general surgery, gastroenterology, and radiological services to patients at River Hospital. The best means of collaboration will be implemented to build a health care delivery system designed to improve quality, efficiency, affordability, and patient access. This collaboration will seek to maintain and expand clinical services that are important to the community, while upholding the unique identity of each hospital. RIVER HOSPITAL | ANNUAL REPORT River Community Wellness Program 98% Physical Therapy 6% Convenient Care 12% RIVER HOSPITAL | ANNUAL REPORT As we move forward with another year of growth we are also expanding and progressing in unprecedented ways at River Hospital. By implementing a plan to construct a new three story facility, contiguous to the main hospital, we will continue to meet the needs of the community. The percentages on the left reflect an increase in patient visits between 2013 and 2014 which further illustrates the need for expansion. The building plan includes integrating Primary Care and Mental Health Services, and broadening Physical Therapy. Outpatient mental health services are available to members of the community and also include a Partial Hospitalization Program that serves active duty soldiers suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS); this is the first outpatient program of its kind. With a new outpatient facility, River Hospital will solve the need for space and integration while increasing the capacity of River Family Health Center, River Community Wellness Program and by extension the military personnel who access the Partial Hospitalization Program. This year the event raised $57,000 to support the purchase of a state-of-the-art 64 slice Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner. The funds received by Friends of River Hospital and individual supporters have made the new CT Scanner more achievable. In recent months the new CT Scanner has aided medical staff in identifying potential stroke victims. With early detection, patients were able to take precautionary measures and prevent a possibly fatal outcome. The American Stroke Association stresses that obscured vision, paralysis, memory loss, and language impairment are among the many dangerous effects that a stroke can have on a victim. With new technology the 64 slice CT Scanner gave medical staff the ability to isolate and focus in on detailed images and has already positively affected patient care. Over the last 25 years Polar Bear Dip funds have afforded the Hospital the opportunity to acquire medical equipment and establish an endowment fund. In recent years these improvements have been greatly impacted by one group alone, the Hollinger Team. For the last five years the group has braved the icy tundra for a six hour drive to Alexandria Bay; they make their journey in memory of Cody Hollinger. Cody spent summers on the river with his family before his life was taken too soon at the young age of 16, in a car accident. To celebrate Cody’s memory, his friends and family paint his football number, 22, on their backs. In 2015, the Hollinger Team consisted of 40 dippers and raised close to $20,000 in support of River Hospital, these numbers grow each year. It is remarkable to see a community transform a tragic accident into something inspirational. The dedication shown by Friends of River Hospital, volunteers, and dippers is astounding. River Hospital is thankful to be a part of a community that shows their support so enthusiastically. The compassion that she exhibits for her job, patients and community is contagious and it infects those around her. Christy goes above and beyond to ensure that all patient and staff needs are met, which is a testament to her belief in teamwork. We’re so glad to have her on our team. Christy promotes an environment in which the nursing staff can work cooperatively to achieve institutional missions and goals. She does this by fostering and maintaining a positive relationship with patients, visitors and other members of the health care team. Christy goes above and beyond the call of her duties to serve our staff, and most of all, our patients. Christy is not only the Emergency Department Nurse Manager, but also a wife and mother of three. She said that she has so much dedication and love for River Hospital because we believe in putting “patients and family first.” It makes the time she spends away from her family worthwhile to know she supports an institution that supports her family and community. Patient Safety - Support the Initiative In 2014, our goal at River Hospital and the Foundation was to acquire a state-ofthe-art 64 slice Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner. The CT Scanner has already impacted patient care and made a difference in the lives of the patients we serve. One of our current goals is to procure new code carts and defibrillators that would equate to faster and more efficient response times to emergency situations. Additionally, to maximize patient comfort and minimize the risk of injury to the patient and their caregivers, new patient handling equipment is essential. We are committed to providing the highest quality of care for our patients. A contribution to support the purchase of new code carts, defibrillators, and safe patient handling equipment would further our mission. Spotlight on Richard R. Macsherry T he memory of Mary Macsherry lives on throughout the North Country and at River Hospital through her altruistic lifestyle and the continued benevolence of her husband, Richard R. Macsherry. In addition to their many diversified acts of philanthropy, Mr. Macsherry provided River Hospital with a considerable gift in honor of Mrs. Macsherry’s legacy in 2012. In turn, River Hospital dedicated the Emergency Department in memory of Mary Macsherry. This gift allowed River Hospital to further its mission to provide compassionate, cost effective and accessible primary health care to the River Communities. Mr. Macsherry’s continued embodiment of his wife’s humanitarian work and kindness is appreciated by many, but especially by River Hospital. Last fall Mr. Macsherry demonstrated his generosity once again. As River Hospital moved forward with plans to incorporate a second, and much needed elevator, the expenses were overwhelming. Without hesitation he came forward and graciously offered to supply River Hospital with the necessary funds. River Hospital is grateful to have such a dedicated individual with an innate sense of civic duty in our midst. These contributions have made a lasting impression on the River Communities. Cynthia Nelson accepts the Program of Promise Award R iver Hospital’s River Community Wellness Program was among six programs from across the nation named a Program of Promise through the Hospital Charitable Services Awards, a national program sponsored by Jackson Healthcare. River Community Wellness Program provides intensive outpatient behavioral health services for active duty military personnel stationed at Ft. Drum. RCWP provides continuity of care for soldiers transitioning from an inpatient stay. It also serves as an intensive intervention option to reduce potential inpatient admissions of service members. This specialized program focuses on building coping skills and supports in the community. It is the only program of its kind in the United States. The program keeps military members close to home while they are healing and learning to cope. A Plan To Merge T he River Hospital Board of Trustees and the River Hospital Foundation Board are pleased to announce that they have adopted a plan to merge Foundation responsibilities with the Hospital. This change involves a number of Foundation Board members accepting Hospital Board positions. A Hospital Board Development Committee, made up of members of both boards, will oversee all activities including volunteer cultivation, stewardship, and events. The decision to merge both Boards will revitalize donor fundraising initiatives, streamline operations, and create greater efficiencies, which are essential requirements in the new health care environment faced by all health care institutions. Historically, the Foundation has been responsible for soliciting, receiving and administering gifts, endowments and other charitable contributions made in support of the Hospital. The Hospital will continue to ensure that all gifts are used in accordance with the intent of its generous donors. River Hospital appreciates the dedication, generosity and community support that the Foundation has provided over the years.
