It has been an interesting start to the year to say the least… While there have been
concerned mutterings around the industry for quite some time now, it appears the
independent retailers are finding a more assertive voice. Finally, it seems there is a
debate emerging which could prove constructive for all parties involved; one that could
stop the apparent rot. Of course the doom and gloom evident in some quarters of the
industry isn’t all pervading. Those at the installation end of the spectrum are part of a
healthy growing phenomenon, whilst many manufacturers embracing various elements
of the burgeoning home cinema market are faring well. However, this isn’t the case for
everyone and, as a tool of the audio, AV and install trades, we at What’s New In Sound
and Vision would like to be a vehicle for you to air your views. What do you - as a
retailer, dealer, distributor or manufacturer - feel needs to be done? How, in the
unforgiving, ever changing market economy, does one not just survive but thrive? If you
have any opinions that you think should be shared, let us be your platform.
To that end, this month’s issue once again serves up the most expansive section of
relevant news around. In addition to that we bring tidings of all the latest product
releases from Bristol’s Sound and Vision Show, in a particularly in-depth review. While
there were some speakers and solutions about appropriate for install, we delve
considerably deeper into this realm with a look at the latest showcase of custom

WHAT’S NEW IN SOUND AND VISION’S ROUND-UP
OF ALL THE VERY LATEST PRODUCT NEWS
BRIMFUL OF FEATURES ON THE 45
Following the release of their award-winning Axium 50-inch DLP flat-screen TV, Sagem is introducing a 45-inch option. While the Sagem Axium HD-D45
shares many of its 50-inch siblings’ features - including HDTV compatibility and the image enhancing DLP digital technology - it benefits from a striking new
look and a myriad of bonus features. The sleek, piano black finish certainly helps it to stand out from the crowd, but the pictures it produces are something to
behold as well. The statistics speak for themselves and there is no doubting the resolution of 1280 x 720, one million pixels per colour, 700 cd/m2 of
brightness and the 3000:1 contrast ratio, make this one highly competitive solution. The inclusion of Faroudja’s DCDi technology helps to ensure the optimum
imagery, regardless of source. This, coupled with the slender dimensions, plethora of extra features and a paltry price of £2,199, make a truly cinematic
experience an eminently affordable option. All hail the HD-D45.

A PHOTO FINISH
Sagem have been quick to make a
name for themselves in the home
cinema arena and there is no doubting
the sleek, stylish 27-inch LCD-TV the
firm are launching will add to this. The
innovative Sagem Axium HD-L27 comes
equipped with a unique integrated photo
card reader, allowing users to view their
digital photos on it, in splendid colour,
with the greatest of ease. The crystal
clear pictures are equally apparent
when viewing moving visuals on this
model, with the impressive contrast
stability and precision both worthy of
note. Capable of taking a host of inputs,
relaying HDTV content and distributing
sound around the room from its two
subtle integrated speakers, this is a
complete solution. It comes chicly
dressed in a piano black finish and has
to be considered one of the most
functional LCD-TVs of its size available.
For only £999, thanks to Sagem’s
unique approach to the AV market, the
user is guaranteed more for their
money.

ONE-BOX FOR ALL
FEELING SUPER SONIC
There can be no doubt that mp3s and their players are reshaping the
musical entertainment market and retailers in our sector have been
attempting to claim their slice of this growing business. One assured
route to do this would surely be to embrace Sony’s range of next
generation mp3 Walkmans, new for 2005. The advanced flash memory NW
Series is all set to redefine music-on-the-move. The slickly styled series
utilises Sony’s SonicStage 3.0 software, offering users a painless way of
converting and managing music from CDs. It also allows them access to
the 500,000 tracks hosted on the Connect Online Music Store, meaning
they might never see the need to buy CDs again.

The latest addition to TEAC’s smartly styled range of home cinema
solutions is the one-box MC-DV250 2.1 DVD System. This fully
featured solution will handle most things you throw at it adeptly –
including DVD-Video, DVD+R/+RW/-R/-RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VideoCD
and MP3 discs – thanks in part to its Progressive Scan (PAL/NTSC).
Boasting a 20-track music memory, a Quartz PLL synthesised
AM/FM stereo tuner with a 30 AM/FM preset station memory and
RDS for Europe, a Digital clock and more, this is a rather complete
option. The two magnetically shielded, 25W, two-way speakers,
bolstered by 50W of bass courtesy of the subwoofer, ensure the
sound is all that we associate with this highly regarded brand.
Serious but compact, the MC-DV250 is a snip at under £299.99

SIR JUKE
The fast growing Acoustic Solutions are set to take a step into the future
with release of their innovative SP150 Audio Jukebox. Priced at a meagre
£199, buyers can download their CDs directly onto the SP150’s internal
40GB hard drive with a simple touch of a button. With the aid of Audio
Blend software, the system can then segue tracks together, providing
endless hours of entertainment. In addition to this, the SP150 can also be
used as a conventional CD-player. However, with capacity to store up to
8,000 average length tracks, or 800 entirely uncompressed, there is a lot
more to the SP150 than your conventional Hi-Fi component.

DONNING THE HALO
That the Halo speakers from Digital Audio Systems stand out cannot be questioned. The speakers
sport a space age look, thanks to their shapely structure and innovative lighting. Featuring a bass unit
at the top of the lower enclosure, above which is mounted a curvilinear cone turned from solid
aluminium, the sounds they produce are as progressive as their design. The tweeter is mounted at the
front of the upper enclosure, which is constructed from 18mm thick medite and lined with 4mm thick
bitumen to mute cabinet resonance. With 40mm thick acoustic foam eliminating internal reflections, to
say that the sound is uncoloured would be an understatement. Yes, bolstered by an HF amplifier, these
£6,500 models bring a tangibly natural level of stereo sound to life.

DAB HANDS
Fresh from the acclaim they received from the BFA
for their multi-channel demonstration at Bristol,
Meridian have seen fit to update their renowned
G Series. The G01 controller, G51 receiver and
G91 DVD-Audio/video player/controller will now all
be available with DAB and FM tuners, highlighting the
all-pervading powers of Digital Audio Broadcasting as it continues to
boom. The models will be known as the G01DAB, G51DAB and G91DAB. The
DAB reception capability has been completely and seamlessly integrated into each system to
produce what its manufacturers are billing as “arguably the best-sounding DAB equipment
available.” The newly invigorated components will retail for £1,725, £2,350 and £4,250 apiece and
serve to prove that even those at the high end can’t ignore the continuing proliferation of DAB.

CHAKRA CAN
A new product from Linn is always worth exploring and
the CHAKRA Power Amplifier Range is no exception.
Built around the audio pioneer’s latest topology, these
groundbreaking models offer increased power, reliability
and efficiency, whilst producing less heat and less
distortion using fewer components. There are eight
models in the range, appropriate for an array of
applications, including either active or passive stereo and multi-channel systems. With consistent performance and pure sounds guaranteed, there are 100W
models available designed to work alongside a system of anything between two and six channels, while three 200W models are available for systems of two to
four channels.
Five years in the development ,the ingenious CHAKRA topology offers robust and powerful low-frequency response, down to near DC. Each member of the
new range boasts Linn’s very own audio-optimised Switch Mode Power Supply, which generates low noise power rails for the audio circuitry. In essence, for
anyone who values the cleanest, undistorted, reproduction of those low frequencies, there is something in the innovative CHAKRA range to suit. Keep an eye out
for its impending release.

3, 2, 1, GO!
Bose have two new systems on the launch pad: the 3.2.1GS series II and
3.2.1 series II. These have been designed to offer enhanced performance
and advanced functionality, from their noticeably sleeker shells. They
retain the original configuration, with two visible speakers each, a
hideaway ACOUSTIMASS module and a sophisticated media centre.
However, they are easier to set-up than their award-winning
predecessors thanks to the inclusion of an instructional disc, which
guides buyers smoothly through the installation process. Bolstered by
the latest incarnation of TrueSpace surround digital processing circuitry,
a convincing home cinema experience is guaranteed.

Earlier this month Swedish team Audio Pro announced the launch of a brand new
5.1 surround sound system named the Bravo FX1. This mid-priced solution
comprises four well-constructed magnetically shielded monitors, a substantial
centre speaker and the 400W Sub Bravo subwoofer. With each of the satellites
acoustically matched and designed to integrate perfectly with the powerful bringer

UPPING THE ANTE
Renowned British speaker manufacturers Monitor Audio certainly caused
a stir at the recent Bristol Show with the release of their Silver RS range.
Boasting both new drivers and a new cabinet design, these take the
performance of the award-winning S range to the next level. At the heart
of each model is the latest incarnation of Monitor’s renowned C-CAM
driver technology. This has been the subject of a number of improvements,
all of which contribute to the natural, clear and accurate sounds clearly
discernible at Sound & Vision 2005.
While the RS range remains elegant in its looks, the speakers cast a
bolder aura than their predecessors. Its strategically strengthened and
damped cabinets are the perfect complement to the new high performance
drivers. The range comprises five models, the biggest and most powerful of
which is the RS8. This floor-standing model has been described as “a true
giant-killer,” and includes two six-inch C-CAM bass drivers, a six-inch CCAM mid driver and a one-inch Gold Dome C-CAM tweeter. The dynamic
floor-standing RS6, meanwhile, includes just the one bass driver, but whether found within a stereo or multi-channel set up – offers the realistic
and natural sounds that characterise this range. The RS selection is
completed by the stand-mounted RS1, the RS-LCR – which acts as the
centrepiece in a multi-channel system – and the RSW-12 active subwoofer.

TALK TALK TALK
Last month, at Bristol’s Sound & Vision Show, leading force in the DAB sphere PURE launched the SONUS-1XT DAB digital radio. An enhanced alarm radio,
this boasts the company’s unique iVOX voice feedback technology. This ingenious inclusion means the SONUS 1XT can tell listeners, in its own lifelike human
voice, the available DAB stations as they scroll through them, the time and the alarm settings available. It can even talk them through each aspect of setting
up the radio. A male and female aural option is available, helping even ardent technophobes to benefit from the advantages DAB has to offer. In addition to
this inimitable boon, the SONUS 1XT also features an enhanced touch-sensitive SnoozeHandle, two independent alarms, Volume Equalisation Technology
(VET) and outstanding XT sound quality, thanks to the custom designed speaker and active filters. Smartly bedecked in a contoured maple wood, this
attractive model is even future-proofed thanks to its USB connector, which enables users to download software upgrades from an internet-connected PC as

TAKING THE P
Boston Acoustics have been
making the news a fair bit of
late thanks to their elegant
and unassuming speaker
systems. The latest to catch
our attention is the P4 Series,
a system of slim on-wall or
pedestal-mounted speakers
specifically designed to
complement the flat-screen
TV market that’s currently in
bloom. Despite their sleek
look and compact housing, the
P4 Series satellites deliver an impressively powerful soundtrack. There are
five speakers in the series: the P460, P450, P442 and P430. These are all
single channel speakers, designed to match the vertical dimensions of a
display screen of 60, 50, 42 and 26-30-inches respectively.
The flagship P400 is a high performance slim theatre speaker, offering
three channels in the one solution. Its speaker array consists of three
110mm bass units, three 110mm passive radiators and three 25mm alloy
dome tweeters – one set of each for the left, centre and right channels.
Each speaker in the range is constructed from extruded aluminium,
meaning superb structural integrity comes as standard, removing the
chance of any unwanted resonance. They also feature MagnaGuard
magnetic shielding, come complete with rugged wall-mounting brackets
and the option of black or silver grilles. Available in the UK now, prices
range from £349 for the P430 up to £1199 for the P400.

PLAY THE RECORDER
A simple DVD-player isn’t enough for many people these days; not in
the era of the DVD-recorder. Goodmans have clearly acknowledged the
mass appeal of such products and come June they will be bringing the
GHDD177DVDR to market. An 80GB HDD Recorder with DVD Recorder
and Videoplus, this is quite the comprehensive solution. With the
capacity to record 200-hours to its hard disk and six hours of footage to
every DVD+R or DVD+RW, this could be the product to finally consign
many aging VCRs to the dustbin. Boasting excellent DVD playback and
a couple of SCARTs in the rear, it has everything necessary to make it a
major hit.

SOUND & VISION OUT AND ABOUT
Out And About
OUR ENERGETIC EDITOR KEEPS YOU UP TO PACE WITH ALL THE INDUSTRY’S LAUNCHES,
SHOWS AND SHENANIGANS…
I remember it as if it were yesterday. There I was, with a pounding heart,
nothing but a candle for light and enough coffee coursing through my veins
to awaken a slumbering army… I refer, of course, to writing this column last
GOING WEST
The major port of call this month was, of course,
Bristol’s Sound and Vision Show 2005. With over 185
firms exhibiting at the event there was an incredible
amount of kit to see, particularly for those of us who
didn’t have our Christmas cut short by CES. With an
abundance of new products to peruse, the place was
buzzing with members of the trade on the first day.
Many of these assembled for the usual press
Master of ceremonies
conference, to indulge in a few free beers and hear Rob Follis
what a number of key industry figures had to say about HDTV and the
prospective playback thereof. With Rob Follis assuming control as the master
of ceremonies, it proved a friendly and evenly fought contest, with the Blu-Ray
promoters, Pioneer’s John Bamford and Sony’s Eric Kingdon, barely
exchanging a blow with Meridian’s Bob Stuart – who himself, despite
apparently singing the virtues of HD-DVD, was more than happy to sit on the
fence. The three did, however, ably sum up the debate, with the sensible
conclusion being that it is too early to start putting eggs in baskets. It was left
to Arcam’s John Dawson to launch the most passionate plea, by willing the
industry to remember that regardless of what happens in the future, there are
some mighty fine DVD-players about in the here and now - offering great
cinematic style visuals – which should definitely not be forgotten.
Vested interest though
John might have here, there
was far more on offer at the
Arcam room than DVDplayers, and it was the company’s sleek new Solo, one-box, Hi-Fi system that
caught my eye… and ears. While members of the press were eagerly soaking
up this information - diligent to the last - back in the hub of the post-show
Marriott the sales teams, PR types and product managers were lapping up the
beers, preparing for the What Hi-Fi? party happening later in the evening. This
was an all ticket affair and proved quite a bash… but no matter – it was the
only Blu-Ray recorder of its type in Europe gracing the What Hi-Fi? team’s
display suite that we had our eye on!
Enjoyable though the Bristol experience invariably is, I always seem to be
stuck at the back of the queue, well behind our Editor-In-Chief, Stuart
Pritchard, when God is handing out the exotic press trips. Thus, while I was
making plans to ‘go west’, he was making his way back from Prague, with the
following tale to tell…
CZECH IT OUT!
Ah, Prague in January! It’s minus 6ºC, covered in snow and - if the assembled
hacks are to be believed - rife with vampires. Thank Van Helsing then for the
sacred ground of The Hilton and the reassuring warmth and technological
glow of the JVC 2005 product launch.
month. However, in what seems to be a remarkably short and hectic period
of time, here I am once again, back with tales of the joy, woe, infidelity and
fresh product launches that characterise this season in the AV industry.
Having spent the first evening splitting into two groups (a la every horror film
ever) and traversing the Gothic streets of the old town in search of friendly, bloodsucking fiend-free, taverns our plucky band survived intact for the following
morning’s gadget-fest amongst the marble lined corridors and conference rooms
of the Hilton.
This year JVC was launching a regular armada of exciting new products,
spanning every area of consumer tech. So, what for us were the highlights of the
range? And what should you be itching to stock this year? First up are the
extensions to JVC’s innovative EX micro component system range. Following the
hugely successful launch of the EX-A1 complete with Wood Cone Speakers last
year, this year sees the EX-D1 multi-format (including DVD-A) Hybrid Ultra Micro
and the stunning EX-D5 audiophile level system - complete with wireless audio
streaming capability from PC via USB - join the range.
In displays, JVC’s High Definition LCD-TVs look set to be the big sellers of
2005, offering perfect images, IDTV and, of course, that aforementioned HD
compatibility. Opening up the world of wireless, the RX-D701S is a fully featured
seven-channel Digital Receiver offering 130W per channel, HDMI and Wireless
USB. And tying in very stylishly with that is the uber box that is the DR-DX7 3-in-1
Hard Disk (250Gb!) and DVD-Recorder/Mini DV combination deck.
Of course, JVC had much more on offer than space allows here, but I dare
say we’ll be able to cover those mentioned here and the rest in more detail in
future issues - not to mention in our sister magazine International Smarthouse!
Oh, and for those left wondering, that evening’s vampire massacre on the
Charles Bridge was a resounding journalistic victory, with the burning bodies of
the undead outnumbering members of the press by four-to-one!
A NEW EXPERIENCE
Work and pleasure?
Fresh from conquering Prague, Stuart will be
off to the rather more exotic climes of East
Anglia next month for Toshiba’s annual
product launch. While he is there, enjoying the
firm’s fabled hospitality, brawling with his
peers and perusing their new product ranges
– which will include a stylish new line-up of
HDTV-ready TVs and DVD-recorders – I will have been packed off to one of the
finest hotels in Bordeaux, to enjoy the Sony Media Experience. Quite what they
have in store I’m not sure, but we’ll have the details of this and, indeed,
Panasonic’s up and coming annual launch, next month.
Finally, on a different note, it has long been said that you shouldn’t mix work
with friends. However, clearly a lot of people in the AV industry disagree. These
include Linn’s Chris Jackaman, PJ Hi-Fi’s Richard Taunton, Ian Hutchinson,
Gramophone and Moorgate Acoustics’ Paul Hobson, who recently took to the ski
slopes together for a holiday. I was about to write “now where was my invitation,”
although looking outside I might just set up my own slalom slope here in Essex…

BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS
Much as we try to cover absolutely everything of importance to the AV
industry, sometimes there just isn’t the space. However, in that instance
the very least we can do is tell you where to head for an even greater depth
of information. And it is with this in mind that you should all be aware of
the fresh crop of flat panel TVinfo sites currently taking shape, designed to
offer industry bods a – ahem - clearer picture. Some of you might already
be aware of www.plasmatvinfo.com and www.LCDtvinfo.com. These
fantastic online resources are packed with information about each format,
full technological glossaries, handy diagrams, expansive review sections,
the latest news and much, much more.
Now, however, the TVinfo series has expanded its portfolio to include
sites on Organic LED, DLP TV and HDTV. Located at
www.OrganicLEDtvinfo.com, www.DLPtvinfo.com and www.HDTVinfo.com,
each of these provides an excellent unbiased information base for its
existing, developing flat panel technology of choice. Other sites currently
under development by the company, meanwhile, include resources
3Dtvinfo, LCOStvinfo, SEDtvinfo, together with others covering
developments in Digital and Flat TV technologies, including the new Slim
CRT TV.
These objective hubs of information are, to our knowledge, the only
specialist, single-point reference domains of their ilk around. They provide
a huge depth of easy-to-navigate, digestible knowledge that is of great use
to manufacturers, distributors, retailers, potential customers and beyond.
“The concerns with all new technology is the fact that many tend to
speculate on pros and cons without actually knowing the full facts,”
explained Stuart Hopwood, Director and founder of PlasmaTVinfo.com Ltd.
“We’ve all probably heard of the common myths, including ‘plasma TVs
that need a gas refill every year’ and ‘don’t tip an LCD on its side as the
liquid crystal will spill’. Funny as they may seem to most, these and many
GOOD IDEAS
This month journalists from across the board will
descend upon the London Heathrow Marriott for
what usually proves to be one of the biggest
launch dates of the year. The scene for
Panasonic’s annual Ideas For Life spring
trade show, the event – which takes
place in the London suite – will give
us the chance to gaze longingly at
several new ranges. Prospective
highlights include a number of
significant additions to the stunning
Viera Plasma and LCD-TV line up and
an increased range of Freeviewenabled merchandise. With the firm’s
big guns out in force, including
Deputy Managing Director Harry
Tsuji, journalists will be offered the
chance to win a number of the
products on show and, no doubt, enjoy
a hearty lunch. With a full catalogue
of products to peruse, we’ll give you

- and what is most

Passionate
about the need to
have an accurate
and simple source of information about the products the CE industry
develop and sell, Stuart added, “The specialist yet basic information
supplied with the service of TVinfo.com sites will be an asset to the
retailer, shop floor personnel, custom installer and customer, greatly
assisting with the selling and purchasing of actual features, advantages
and benefits”.
Each of the sites is divided into a number of sections: Technology,
Benefits, Product, News and Reviews, Outlets, and Customisation.
Acquiring the information relevant to you is as simple as logging on and
clicking on the area in question, as this astoundingly good service is
entirely free. The sites are also, we were told, intentionally free of
advertising to maintain an ìunbiased ‘information base for the industry as
a whole.’ Sponsored sections by manufacturers and suppliers will
eventually appear throughout the sites and these are currently available.
Manufacturers, suppliers and retailers should send their product
information and press releases to [email protected] for inclusion on
these fine sites.

REASSURING WORDS
The consumer electronics industry is consumed with debate and, it would
seem, fear at the moment. Independent retailers everywhere are
expressing concerns about the impact of competition from Internet outfits
without the overheads and corporations with greater economies of scale,
both able to undercut them. And with profits falling for many, reassuring
them isn’t easy. Last month, Sevenoaks’ Paul Lee Kemp became one of
the first key figures in the independent sector to speak out, demanding
greater support from manufacturers in return for the investment firms
like his put into generating the market they make their money in.
However, while there are many who share these concerns, others have
seen reassuring signs. One particularly positive contribution to the
debate, which we were delighted to receive, came from John Reddington,
Sales and Marketing Director of specialist AV furniture manufacturers
Alphason Designs…
Dear Editor,
The current Internet threat may seem dire to retailers but it might be a
case of history repeating itself, albeit in a slightly different guise. In my
30+ years in the industry I have seen these threats come. And go…
Let’s go back to the time when RPM was abolished and Comet
Discount Warehouses and other retailers such as Roy Newton of
Birmingham, Global Discount Warehouses and Audio Supplies fuelled the
discount fever. They all climbed on the bandwagon to capitalise on the
increasing interest in Hi-Fi and consumer electronics products. They
were bitten by the Tesco bug -”pile ‘em high, sell’em cheap”. And they did
for a while.
But where are they now? Gone without trace - except for Comet
which went on to expand into the sophisticated operation that it is today.
Of course consumers don’t change. They are still motivated by price. But,
as has been well documented, the service aspect is becoming increasingly
important. You just don’t get the service if you buy off the web, as many
consumers are finding out to their cost. And this industry’s products need
good product knowledge if consumers are to get the very best enjoyment
from their purchases. Otherwise the next big problem will be another
surge of Technofear!
So what’s the answer? As a manufacturer the answer is, I believe, to
adopt a policy of moderation. Alphason Designs’ success is based on just
that. We supply 4,000+ “bricks and mortar” retailers in the UK including
Hi-Fi stores, custom installers, mail order, multiples and departmental
stores, and the essential independent electrical retailers. Any one of
these 4,000 retailers can make exceedingly attractive margins in excess
of 35% on return, which is a very healthy situation.
In my opinion manufacturers must adopt a balanced long-term
approach. New technologies mean an uninformed general public may
need help and advice. The latest innovations approaching - HDTV, DLP and
Digital TV - require experienced and knowledgeable sales people to sell
them. The web may be okay for small items such as DVD/CD software and
books, but would you trust an unknown company, perhaps the other end
of the country, to deliver an expensive and relatively delicate piece of
equipment by an uncaring carrier?
You only have to watch programmes such as BBC’s Watchdog to
witness some of the horrific instances that are happening to consumers
who take the short-term approach to purchasing. Retailers should
perhaps consider recording these programmes and showing them to
consumers who threaten to buy online.
Alphason and Sagem’s
new package
At the same time
retailers have to
increase training and
service aspects and
hone up on the things
they do better than their
competition. They have
to train their sales staff
to point out the many
dangers of buying high
ticket and intricate
technology on the web.
So retailers: get out there and sock it to ‘em. You are the kings of good
service! And fellow manufacturers; I urge you to think beyond tomorrow.
Yours sincerely,
John Reddington
P.S. As John Ruskin said: “It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s unwise to pay
too little. When you pay too much you lose a little money, that is all. When you
pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought
was incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do…”
Alphason appear to be putting their money where there mouth is. In
Bristol the firm announced they will be offering a special package deal
exclusively to independent electrical retailers. Comprising the new 45-inch,
Sagem Axium HD-D45 high-definition DLP TV - alongside a stunning twoshelf, piano black, toughened safety glass Alphason support - the package will
be incredibly competitively priced and will offer buyers possibly the most
accessible route to large, flat-screen, HDTV-ready visuals around… as well as
the stand to match.

RETURN OF THE LAB?
CHANGE AT THE TOP
Rumours that IAG will relaunch the Audiolab brand have
been rife in the industry for a good while now, but finally
they appear to have been given a grounding. Our sources
on the scene tell us that the respected brand, famous for
fermenting an unusual level of loyalty amongst its buyers,
is set to return. The word on the street is that a full new
range, including affordable integrated amplifiers as well
as pre and power separates, will be launched, conforming
to all the criteria that gave Audiolab its great reputation
amongst consumers. Watch this space for further details.
One of the industry’s true giants have announced the candidate hoping to become their
next President and CEO. In Tokyo the board of directors of Toshiba Corporation
nominated Mr Atsutoshi Nishida, Executive Officer/Corporate Executive Vice President of
Toshiba, for the post of Representative Executive Officer/President and CEO of the
Company. The next president will succeed Mr Tadashi Okamura in June this year and the
appointment is subject to approval by the board meeting following the ordinary general
meeting of the shareholders.
The nomination reflects the board’s decision to accept the recommendation of
Toshiba’s Nominating Committee, which met on 21st February. The Nominating
Committee received a submission from Mr Okamura recommending Mr Nishida as his
successor and undertook a comprehensive assessment of Mr Nishida’s record,
achievements and personal qualities and also the reasons provided by Mr Okamura for
his recommendation. The Committee then decided to nominate Mr Nishida as a candidate
for election as Toshiba’s next president and CEO. Following the election of the new
president and CEO, Mr Okamura will become Chairman of the Board of Toshiba. The
current Chairman, Mr Taizo Nishimuro will retain a role as an advisor to the company.

THE RECOVERY POSITION
It might not be the best news, but it is worth
noting…According to their website, Samsung don’t
believe the slide in LCD-TV prices, currently
damaging profits, will reverse until the last part of
2005. A leading player in this area, the company
have predicted that prices for the displays will
continue to fall for the time being. This is because
demand has not matched that previously predicted
by the manufacturers, who have invested vast sums
to bump up production. However, come the Autumn
things should start to stabilise.

RINGING CHANGES
Earlier this month Fujitsu announced some minor
changes to the specifications of the impressive new 40
series Plasmavision screens, which adorned the cover
of this very magazine last month. Following initial
feedback from retailers, Fujitsu has decided to supplement
the previously announced analogue and digital connectivity options with an HDMI
(High-Definition Multimedia Interface) terminal. This will allow users to transport both
digital video and audio signals over a single cable to produce full-digital video and sound
without signal deterioration. In
anticipation of the launch of high-definition TV (HDTV) services by major European
broadcasters, the addition of an HDCP-ready HDMI connection reinforces Fujitsu’s
credentials as a platform for HDTV.
Unfortunately, in order to meet retail supply commitments, the addition of an HDMI
connector has meant Fujitsu dropping the integrated analogue tuner from the 40 series
screens. The new 40 series screens have been renumbered as P42HHA40 and P50XHA40
to take account of the specification changes. Both screens will be available from high-end
audio-visual retailers and custom installers from the middle
of March 2005.
The screens still feature Fujitsu’s AVM-II digital video processor technology, which
includes four new features that deliver even more scintillating images across a wider
range of video and multimedia inputs. The MPEG Noise Reduction Circuits, Image
Adaptive Processing, Natural Light Sensor and Natural Colour Tuning certainly impress to
the eye and when HDTV hits the airwaves, hopefully later this year, few models will be so
well equipped to display it.

CALL IN THE FEDS
The British Federation of Audio has once again shown
its worth to the industry by offering financial support
for the forthcoming High End Show in Munich. Having
secured sponsorship with UK Trade and Investment
for the Germany-based event, which takes place
between the 5th and 8th of May 2005, a grant is
available to all complying UK audio SME exporters
(including non-BFA members) for an exhibition stand
or exhibition room. The size of the grant available has
been confirmed as 50% of the cost of the exhibition
stand or exhibition room, up to a grant maximum of
between £2000 and £2,500. There are no additional
allowances for air flights, accommodation or meals,
so companies must meet these costs themselves.
Properly receipted freight costs, however, are
allowable within the maximum grant, except where
product is for sale or is not being returned.
All funding applications will be administered by
the BFA who are planning to provide an array of
additional services. These include a BFA
representative at the HES to help with any problems,
a BFA-supported PR package to cover the event, a
fact-pack for new exhibitors going to Munich for the
first time, advice on airfares and accommodation and
BFA press releases covering and promoting the event.
To fund these services the BFA will be charging a
£350 management fee (taken from the BTI grant) for
non-BFA members. The fee for BFA members in the
group participating will be borne by the Federation,
highlighting once again the benefits of being involved
with the organisation.

The Bug from Pure:

THE WINNING TEAMS
DIGITAL AUDIO BROADENING
The growth in sales of digital radios has been nothing short of sensational in the UK over the
last year. Reflecting the myriad benefits associated with Digital Audio Broadcasting, consumer
awareness of DAB in the UK is now said to stand at 59% of the adult population - some 29
million people in total. Sourced by Ipsos RSL Omnibus, researching on behalf of the DRDB
(Digital Radio Development Bureau), awareness has risen some 16% in the last year.
Sales have also gone up accordingly, with manufacturers reporting a record year in 2004.
This trend is continuing into 2005, with Dixons recently announcing that DAB receivers are now
outselling their conventional analogue cousins for the first time, by a ratio of 2:1.
Few products have reached mass-market status with such incredible speed. “Our goal is to
sell 1.2million radios in 2005, and an awareness level of nearly 60% is an encouraging starting
point for the year,” DRDB Chief Executive, Ian Dickens confirmed. With considerably better
sound quality guaranteed, a greater selection of stations available, handy information to
complement broadcasts and a huge rostrum of functional products driving this market, the
recent introduction of the first, eagerly awaited Electronic Programme Guides, should ensure
DAB continues to mushroom.

THE FUTURE’S DARK
As we reported last month Optimum are
clearly on the way up and this progress is
set to continue, as the firm have recently
reinvigorated the AV Stand Range by
introducing the option of charcoal black
glass shelving. Models bedecked in this
glistening, modish finish were on show in
Bristol recently. The AV stand series is
known for its flexibility, polished looks and
commitment to both safety standards and
the best performance. Designed to
accommodate LCD and plasma screens up
to 50-inches in size, company director John
Ogden explained the motives behind the
fresh finish: “There is currently a growing
demand in the home entertainment
furniture market for stylish dark glass
finishes. We’re confident that the
introduction of charcoal black glass shelving
will increase the popularity of the Optimum
AV range”.

As we announced last month, this year the BFA
stepped up their level of involvement in Bristol’s
Sound and Vision Show by introducing their own
awards for the displays found therein. Yes, never
mind the recent BAFTAs and Oscars, these were the
awards the BFA’s burgeoning membership of
British manufacturers exhibiting at the renowned
Bristol event wanted to win. The event certainly
proved a success, with attendance outstripping that
at 2004’s show, and the competition amongst
exhibitors was tough. However, eventually the
judges came to a conclusion, with Neat Acoustics
claiming victory in the hard fought Best TwoChannel Demonstration category, Meridian Audio
reigning victorious for the Best Multi-Channel
Demonstration and Focal and Naim Audio sharing
the spoils for the Best Looking Exhibition award.
BFA Members had voted on the parameters they
thought were most important in a demonstration, in
order of importance. These were deemed to be the
atmosphere in the room; the sound quality whilst
sitting, its image, the graphics of explanation and
the look of the room. Each room was judged on
these factors, with Steve Harris, the BFA’s
Chairman, leading the awards team.
Steve described Neat’s winning room as
“Simple… with a pleasant atmosphere with
graphics.” He also noted the “good sound,” and
“interesting music played at sensible levels.”
Meridian Audio’s clip from Hero, meanwhile, was
described as “excellent” offering the “scale without
going over the top… and excellent detail.”
Meridian’s set-up could also, the Chairman
concluded, “keep the detail during the loud and not
so loud sections of the clip.” In winning the award
for their aesthetic choices, the Focal room was
compared to Ikea, thanks to its “wooden floor, great
atmosphere and good lighting, ” which put the
home theatre system “in context.” Finally Naim
Audio were commended for their “chill out room.” It
was, Steve explained, “totally different; a place to
chat and a room designed to drive traffic to the
other three Naim rooms on the fifth floor.”
Overall the BFA’s main man commended the
exhibitors on “a very interesting and enjoyable
experience” and the “serious effort” companies had
put in “to make their rooms both effective and
inviting to the public.”

AT THE BAFTAS
There are few names in AV bigger than that of Pioneer, but this year the firm’s
profile is set to rise once again. The giant corporation were recently confirmed as
the new sponsor for The British Academy Television Awards 2005, the ceremony
of which takes place on April 17th. Not content with this, they have seen fit to
introduce a new audience award. Designed to honour programme-makers
whose novel and bold approach has brought both critical praise and commercial
success, The Pioneer Award shortlist was reached by a committee of national
television critics and the winner will be selected by the public. The four shows in
the running are Green Wing, Shameless, This World: One Day of War and Who
Do You Think You Are?
Heidi Johnson-Cash, Marketing Manager for Pioneer explained the reasons
behind the institution of this new award: “The Pioneer Award represents exactly
what the Pioneer brand stands for: excellence and originality to be enjoyed by as
many people as possible. We hope that it becomes an annual symbol of such
virtues within television”
Voting for the award is already underway and votes can be cast through the
Pioneer website at www.pioneer.com/bafta or through Pioneer retailers. The final
ceremony is set to be hosted by Graham Norton and broadcast on BBC1, all of
which should serve to keep Pioneer very much in the public eye.

MONSTER BASH
Monster might not have claimed a Grammy themselves last month, but those
who use and endorse their products were certainly high in the public eye. The
event, which took place at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California, opened
with a medley of hits from Prince, a long-time Monster user. Meanwhile,
presenters included Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, also known to
favour the brand, as well as long-time Monster family friend B.B. King. Recent
addition to the Monster family singer/songwriter John Mayer was also on hand
to present and delivered a humorous dialogue. The Grammy audience,
meanwhile, included the company’s top dog, Noel Lee, his wife Lilly, and many
other famous users including legendary engineer Eddie Kramer, Carlos
Santana (who recently performed Monster’s 25th anniversary bash in Vegas)
and No Doubt. With those in the know clearly happy to embrace and expound
the virtues of their products, few brands are as marketable in-store as Monster.

SOUND & VISION EYE ON THE INDUSTRY
SNAPPING UP THE SPACE
While the Sound & Vision Show 2005 has only just
slipped by and many are still no doubt recovering
from their endeavours down in Bristol, important
news of the return of one of last year’s biggest
successes is beginning to filter through. Yes, the
What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision / Best of Stuff Show
returns this Autumn, opening up on November 4th.
There may be eight months to go until the grand
opening, but, as expected, the confirmed exhibitor
list for 2005 is growing by the day. The event’s curators had a strong presence
down in the West Country, but this is their baby and they are pulling out all the
stops to make it their biggest show to date. Recent confirmations include
prestigious brands like Denon, Marantz and TEAC, whilst a host of other big names
had already been confirmed. These include Acoustic Energy, Arcam, Audica,
Cambridge Audio, Cyrus, Fujitsu, Gizmondo, Mission, Naim, Nokia, Pioneer, Pure
Digital, Siemens Mobile, Sim2, Toshiba, Wharfedale, Wilson Benesch and Yamaha.
The event is rapidly becoming a must-attend date for the Hi-Fi and home
cinema buff. The industry has clearly cottoned on to this as only two suites from
last year’s event are still available. In order to present the largest possible portfolio
of brands, the organisers have also decided to increase the overall event area and
have secured a limited number of bedrooms for hire immediately, above the
dedicated convention centre facility. The availability of these bedrooms is quite
limited and they will be allocated on a first come first served basis… so for those
yet to sign up, we suggest you get dialling! As with last year, it will take place in
Hammersmith’s Novotel West, over a period of three days – we’re looking forward
to it already.

SIZE MATTERS IN LCD
This month at CeBIT 2005, key player in the manufacturing of TFT-LCD display
panels Samsung Electronics unveiled their latest triumph: the world’s largest
TFT-LCD, standing proud at 82-inches wide. This fully HDTV-compatible model
was developed at the company’s new production complex in Tangjeong, Korea.
The soon-to-be operational 7th generation production facility uses glass
substrates that measure 1.87m x 2.20m.
This is the latest first for the company behind the maiden 40-inch model
(August 2001), 46-inch panel (October 2002) and 57-inch model (December
2003). The new facility will allow Samsung to produce two 82-inch panels from a
single substrate. Previously, technological limitations prevented the
development of LCDs of this size and competitive technologies, such as PDP and
DLP technologies, were used to produce such large-sized panels. This fully
featured offering employs the patented Super Patterned-ITO Vertical Alignment
(S-PVA) technology to achieve extra-wide viewing angles. In addition, the
product boasts a low-dispersion colour filter and ultra-high aperture ratio,
achieving a contrast ratio of at least 1200:1 and brightness of 600cd/m2. Sang
Soo Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of the LCD Development Center,
proclaimed: “Our 82-inch LCD panel proves Samsung Electronics’ technological
leadership… with this panel, we have achieved the world’s best performance in
terms of contrast ratio, viewing angle and colour saturation.”
Samsung Electronics purports to be at least one year ahead of the
competition when it comes to 7th generation production technology. As a result
the company is well poised to take an early lead in the fast-growing market for
such large-screen, wall-hanging LCD-TVs, more than capable of competing with
the plasmas that were previously meeting this need.
The unveiling of this new product follows an announcement last month that
Samsung will invest KRW2.0809-trillion in the Tanjeong-based production
facility. The funds will be used for the construction of the clean room and
purchase of production equipment and highlight the extent of the company’s
commitment to this mushrooming format.

SEVENTH HEAVEN
Despite Managing Director Paul Lee Kemp’s
much publicised comments concerning the
problems afflicting independent retailers in
recent times, it certainly isn’t all doom and
gloom at Sevenoaks. In fact, recently the UK’s
largest specialist retailer of quality home
entertainment solutions proudly announced
that it has been awarded the contract to run
the Sound & Vision Department at Harrods of Knightsbridge, the world’s most
famous department store.
Yes, midway through March the firm took over responsibility for this expansive
section and are set to bring all of their traditional consumer electronics retailing
expertise to bear in a truly high-class shopping environment.
“This is a great honour for Sevenoaks Sound & Vision,” Paul commented. “We’ve
been in business for more than 30 years now, delivering state-of-the-art home
entertainment technologies accompanied by the highest standards of customer
service in the industry. Our nationwide franchise has stood the test of time and
delivered what we originally promised - in every respect.”
“Being awarded the Sound & Vision concession in Harrods is likely to prove one of
the highlights in the group’s history. Thanks to the quality and demographic of the
store’s customers, this will be a showcase for the group, not to mention the
leading-edge products from the selected manufacturers that we’ll be stocking.”
Susanne Given, a director at Harrods, commented: “Harrods has a reputation
for offering the very latest, innovative products via a talented team of customer
service specialists. Sevenoaks Sound and Vision’s reputation for excellence in their
field will complement the Harrods experience perfectly.”
“Harrods customers expect the very best… Sevenoaks Sound & Vision is going to
ensure that’s exactly what they get,” promised Lee-Kemp.

BLOK FURNITURE
New kids
on the Blok
With the industry supposedly in decline,
SARAH ADCOCK uncovers why things are
looking so rosy for one of our top AV
furniture manufacturers…
Never mind the meteoric rise of Bloc Party; it is Blok that retailers in the AV
industry should be taking note of this season. The furniture specialists may
have only be around since last April, but they’ve already been making serious
waves in this growing marketplace, snapping up dealers in their droves along
the way. This year, however, with a number of new lines in the offing and some
major launches lined up in the late summer, they are all set to take things a
step further.
For a long time the specialist AV furniture marketplace was failing to live up
to its potential. As a whole it has long been one of the most lucrative about, with
hundreds of millions of pounds spent on cabinets, stands and supports year on
year. Traditionally, whilst the consumer might have found their home cinema
solution in your very store, they would then scoot off to Ikea for an appropriate
rack, with the potential profits from this slipping through your fingertips en
route.
With Blok this need not be the case. After all, the
firm has an excellent grounding in the broader furniture
business, with current boss Simon Gavin the third
generation of his family to earn his crust in this sphere.
Experience like this doesn’t come cheaply and the Blok
brand has been successfully built on the knowledge and
comprehension of the consumer’s desires and needs
Simon and his family have acquired over the years. They
also have an appreciable knowledge of the AV industry
itself, thanks to their work on the Arca range with Veda in
the past and the success of the entertainment-orientated
Audinni range, distributed through furniture retailers.
With this duality of perspectives, the team running
Blok have a unique insight. They were able to isolate an
area of the market that’s currently untapped and
proceeded to fill it with fine products – products which
live up to the scrutiny of some seriously big names in
electronics, including Sharp - who used Blok’s products to display their wares at
the Bristol show. But what makes them so different? Well a brief glance through
their catalogue or website and it will be obvious to anyone who knows anything
about this market. There might well be plenty of specialist furniture about, but
what – Blok ask - became of the wood?
good wood
Though hard to find in the AV sector, wooden furniture hasn’t gone out of
fashion. It remains popular and can be stylish, modish and chic. The team at
Blok know this. After all, they have been shifting serious amounts of it
throughout their working lives and their current range is a testament to the
appeal of wood. It was filling this gap in the AV market that inspired and drives
the firm… and it makes perfect sense. How better does a technophile appease
their other half than housing their entire system in the kind of cabinet that will
add to, rather than detract from, the décor of their living room? How better,
right now, than by choosing a product from Blok’s 300, 400 or 500 ranges?
It isn’t just their smart, modern look that characterises Blok’s current
range. When it comes to housing audio-visual equipment effectively, flexibility is
absolutely imperative. As we know, a consumer’s system of choice can be as
small or expansive as they choose. Thus it is vital to have furniture on offer
capable of fulfilling any need. With Blok that is exactly what you get. No matter
that one client might have more stacks of receivers, pre-amps, power-amps,
players, recorders, consoles and separates than you could shake a rather
worrying credit card bill at. These guys will have the product for you, as their
racks are entirely modular. Your client needs eight or nine shelves for their
system? That won’t be a problem…
Whilst the popular solutions found in the 300, 400 and 500 cater effectively for
separates, the 30 AV Series will support a flat-screen TV of choice. In addition to
these racks, Blok’s current crop of products also includes a number of enclosed
cabinets. The 1000, 2000 and 3000 series cater for a range of requirements and
are available in a number of finishes with the option of a grille or solid door. These
come ready-built and are delivered by specialists, ensuring the consumer of the
utmost convenience and the finest build quality.
flattering response
With the flat-screen market really starting to pick up, Blok’s dedicated team of
designers are currently working on a number of other solutions to meet this need,
set for release in September. These will include an innovative corner stand, to keep
a plasma tucked neatly away, and an array of other options, many of which will be
even more smoothly styled than their predecessors. The money that Blok have
made has been ploughed back into research and development
and, with a host of sleek, attractive and curvaceous new
options in the making, we can’t wait to see the fruits of this.
The public have been showing an excellent response to
their products and resellers throughout the audio and home
cinema industry have latched onto this. After all, there is
something in it for them too – not least a handy means to
raising their own profits from the margin they make;
something Blok have plans in the pipeline to make an even
more attractive proposition. Indeed, their experience in the
general furniture industry has highlighted to them what a
small mark up specialist retailers in our industry make,
relative to the 100% made elsewhere. As a result, come their
new releases this year, Blok will be striving to ensure their
dealers can claim a more satisfactory slice of the pie for
themselves: something everyone will appreciate given the
current climate.
All of Blok’s furniture is manufactured and hand-finished here in the UK from
quality materials. With 75,000 feet of factory floor space up in Leeds at their
disposal, they have always proved adept at meeting demand. This, in itself, has
been no mean feat. In a little under a year the firm have snapped up around 150
dealers, including 10 at one show, where their products really stood out amongst
their competitors. Their agents remain on the road, building up this dealership
network as we speak, stimulating interest amongst clients of every ilk, from the
small, localised Hi-Fi specialist to names of the magnitude of John Lewis. And,
with high-quality, unique, practical and attractive products and a healthier margin
for the retailer to offer, this should be no surprise. Is there any reason not to stock
the wares of this particular chip off the old Blok?

SHOW REVIEW
Best Of
The West
Always one to weather the weather, HAMISH
McNAIR-WILSON skied down to Bristol to report
on what was new at Sound & Vision 2005…
Sometimes, you wonder why you bother…Standing on the platform at
Colchester railway station on Thursday night, with nothing but a suit and a scarf
to protect me from the blizzard I found myself in was one of them. Timing, they
say, is everything, and mine was perfect… assuming living out north Essex’s very
own version of The Day After Tomorrow was a long held ambition. Still battling
through the elements is the least you can expect from your dedicated team at
What’s New… and if a smattering of snow wasn’t going to stop the rail service, it
definitely wasn’t going to stop us. After all, Bristol’s Sound and Vision Show is
one of the most established dates in our industry’s diary and, now in its 18th
year, it remains as strong as ever. An impressive feat, given the recent reports of
a downturn in the industry, but indicative of how much it is valued by
manufacturers and the visiting public alike. There was certainly a strong
representation of the former this year, with the figure of over 185 exhibitors
topping last year’s total and coming close to a record. Companies continued to
claim space right up until the last minute, with a number of late additions to the
fold ensuring there was a complete collection of AV’s big guns, innovative audio
specialists, furniture solutions manufacturers and more for us to peruse.
I arrived at the show first thing on Friday morning to find things already
rather vibrant. The lobby of the Marriott was busy with manufacturers,
exhibitors, organisers and journalists bantering away. Normally I would have
joined in, but we had 500 copies of the magazine to distribute…
what a deal
The layout of the show was a familiar one, with the ground floor heavily
populated with a number of significant names. One of the first stands to catch
my eye was that of Alphason Designs. Well placed once again, the company
were out in force and a great selection of gleaming products was on display,
ready to catch the eye of all who passed by. These included the award-winning
AD3/105PB, its piano black shelves really helping it to stand out from the crowd.
In a time when the minimalist look of clear glass and metal has become the
The Show’s organisers were in

dominant design solution, it is good to see Alphason heavily pushing other
options with equal aesthetic appeal. Another of these was a new solution being
offered exclusively alongside Sagem’s latest DLP TV. A domineering,
statuesque home cinematic option, this should really help our cover stars to
push this most affordable of large screen formats. Boasting an immersing
screen more sizable than the most popular plasmas, all the pictorial benefits
associated with Texas Instruments’ DLP technology and an exclusive Alphason
Designs stand to sit on, all – we were told – for around the £2,000 mark, this
constitutes stunning value for money in anyone’s language.
The DLP TV has certainly be receiving a lot of attention from the industry
of late, with more and more manufacturers embracing the format and bringing
its products to market. One of the leading lights of this growing area is
undoubtedly Optoma and it was their stand, just around the corner, that we
stumbled across next. Apparently the company had only decided to do the
show at the last minute and, as a result, were clearly pleased with their
prominent position. Despite it being very early in the show, they had already
managed to sell two of their RD50, 50-inch DLP TVs when we spoke to them.
We weren’t surprised - what else can deliver as many inches of quality viewing
with such simplicity, straight from the box? Also up and running at the Optoma
stand was one of their latest projectors, firing onto a screen supplied by
Beamax.
out of the kitchen
Next door to the Optoma stand Morphy Richards were making their presence
felt. The company were clearly trying to shake off their reputation as specialists
in kettles, deep fat fryers and other kitchen-orientated kit. They had a number
of stylish stereo solutions on display, including some that boasted DABreceiving abilities. As these begin to hit the shop shelves over the coming
months, it will be interesting to see how they are received. Well designed, their
smooth lines and enticingly lit fascias certainly caught my attention and exude
the class necessary to make an impact at the highly competitive, mass end of
the market.
Immediately in front of these stands was a sizable area which had been
commandeered by What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision magazine for a special
showcase of high-definition television. With a busy schedule ahead I decided
the popular arena would be better filled with the consumers that were queuing
up, but the decision was taken out of my hands by Andy Kerr, who all but
bundled me through the door. With a Sony Blu-Ray recorder at the heart of the
system on show – the only one of its type in Europe, we were told – the boys
had clearly put the hours in to create something rather special. By
concurrently broadcasting HDTV signals and their conventional equivalents on
the projector screen, even the most cynical viewers were forced to
21

acknowledge the benefits high-definition will afford when it becomes available.
With Sky believed to have plans to begin broadcasting by perhaps as early as
the end of the year, buying HDTV enabled products is now a prerequisite for
those that take their entertainment seriously. It was impressive to see What HiFi? Sound and Vision continuing to support and heavily sponsor the Bristol
Show, despite the development of their own event.
standing tall
Also registering an impact on the ground floor were furniture specialists
Optimum. Having reported a record year, we were able to discuss the factors
behind their success with MD John Ogden. One of these is, of course, their fine
products - and an array of these were on show, sparkling under the lights. As
profits continue to soar for a number of companies operating in this realm, the
competition is picking up. Stil-Stand were another firm with a significant setup boasting the benefits their specialist stands afford, whilst upstairs
Quadraspire had an entire room at their disposal. This was well filled with an
excellent selection of their stands. Their uniquely decoupled shelves help users
to draw the most uncoloured of sounds from their kit, although apparently the
odd consumer, not au fait with how these work, was heard to ask, “are they
supposed to wobble?”. Highlights of Quadraspire’s display included a fantastic
wooden solution, designed to take a significantly sized plasma, and some very
attractive, completely clear speaker stand prototypes, which should prove a
success when they go into production.
Vivid Audio! if looks could kill...agh!
22
The first floor of the Bristol Show is best known for being home to the bar,
where much of the big business done at the Marriott appears to be conducted.
We certainly had a few key meetings lined up at this particular location. Just
around the corner from one of the show’s biggest draws was another, the Linn
room. Impressively sized, the executive lounge had been commandeered by the
company in order for them to highlight the abilities of their high-performance
Artikulat loudspeaker system in its full specification. Various incarnations of the
four-strong series were on show in systems built around one of their finest
universal disk players, to highlight the musical strengths of the high-definition,
music formats. This they clearly did, whilst also highlighting to traditional Hi-Fi
loyalists in the audience that two-channel is very much alive and worthy of our
attention.
new ears resolution
Indeed, it was interesting to note the prevalence and prominence of two-channel
systems throughout the Marriott. Whilst there is no doubting, in the era of the
multi-channel home cinema system, that 5.1 solutions are selling in their
droves, many of the manufacturers present clearly still take a great deal of pride
in the depth and accuracy they can offer via their finest stereo solutions. With
this continuing supply of such products undoubtedly driven by a demand –
evident amongst many of the hundreds of visitors that made it through the doors
to the Bristol Show – for the time being, at least, this market remains significant.
That said, with more and more great speakers competing for the attention of the
two-channel loyalist, being heard above your peers is never easy. One company
that will be, if there is any justice, is Resolution. I spent a significant amount of
time in their room, discussing their new RESOLUTION loudspeakers with the
little known company’s top brass. These classically styled models weigh an
audacious 26kg each and boast an innovative and original triaxial driver,
supported by a revolutionary eight-foot, sound-absorbent pipe folded up inside.
These certainly stood out from the crowds in terms of their design, whilst a
number of visitors to the room commented on the exceptionally, natural sounds
they produced. It was as though Mariah Carey herself was in the room and,
retailing for only £1,200 per pair, I hope the show will prove a successful launch
platform for the company.
Other firms excelling in the two-channel arena included Sony, who were
knocking out some fine old Clapton tunes in the top of the building, and Naim,
who had about four different rooms at their disposal, to highlight the capabilities
of their new N-Series. While Monitor Audio have been winning us over of late
with the progress they’ve been making with their most discreet speaker
packages, it was their new Silver RS8s that left me gobsmacked at Bristol. Fully
fired up, this latest incarnation of what the firm themselves describe as a “true
giant killer,” more than proved worthy of its flagship title. Dynamic, natural,
engrossing sounds of a genuinely wide-bandwidth were discernible and kept me
entertained and in their room for an unusually long time.
I had a similar experience at the Cabasse room. Here the firm’s elegantlooking Xi System, distributed in the UK through Gecko, was in full effect and I
SHOW REVIEW
found myself entertained by I-Robot for a good while, whilst analysing its
impressive performance. If looks could kill, I was to experience death by
loudspeaker in the Vivid Audio room, where a combination of the company’s
floor-standing and centre speakers were on display. A triumphant feat of South
African design, these high-end models are relatively new to the UK market and
were, to my mind, the best looking options to grace the show.
Other highlights when it came to sonorous and absorbing sounds were to
be found in the ProAc, Jamo, Wharfedale and Acoustic Energy rooms. However,
for those seeking the ultimate in innovation in this area, there was no beating
the Yamaha facility, which featured at its heart a demonstration suite with their
award-winning, hugely lauded YSP-1 up and running. I sat in for a demo and
was easily seduced by the £799.99 product, which has the power to project
sound beams around a room to create a genuinely surrounding soundscape
from its single body. With a clip of Forrest Gump and a full explanation of the
technology included, this really got the crowds talking and should keep the
impressive deluge of orders the company have already reported flooding in.
Monitor Audio’s discreet Selection
getting high… definition
While great sounding speakers remain the hallmark of the Bristol Show,
increasingly it is a home to some of the finest visual solutions too. New options
in this arena were everywhere, not least on the first floor at the Fujitsu stand,
where their new batch of plasmas were winning over the crowds. With Pioneer
also putting on a strong showing in the plasma sphere, and Sharp again
highlighting the progress that is being made in the area of the LCD-TV and
projectors, the show is increasingly wearing the audio-visual tag with pride.
Sim2’s showing would certainly be a testament to this as the firm had a couple
of rooms to their name, one of which featured their latest DLP TVs running
high- definition sources, illustrating how audacious the visuals they’ll be able to
relay will be once HDTV is readily available. Of course, the firm also had their
latest projectors on show. Owl, meanwhile, had two rooms at their disposal and
used these to highlight the respective abilities of Mitsubishi’s HC2000 and
Sanyo’s PLV-Z3. This allowed visitors to witness the varying abilities of projectors
of different price points and, in the case of the latter, served to prove genuinely
large-screened, cinematic visuals need not be the preserve of the excessively
affluent.
One of the buzzwords of the show was HDTV, as manufacturers scramble
to be the first to meet the needs of the consumer as this comes into fruition. It
was therefore fitting that the show’s organisers chose this as the major topic for
discussion during the press conference. This took place on the Friday night of
the show in the Wilson Benesch suite on the first floor and featured speeches
from Pioneer’s John Bamford, Sony’s Eric Kingdon, Meridian’s Bob Stuart and
Arcam’s John Dawson. The first two were given the task of proposing Blu-Ray as
the most desirable solution for the playback and prospective recording of HDTV.
Meridian, meanwhile, although technically supporting the development of both
formats, sang the praises of HD-DVD, whilst John Dawson of Arcam rounded
things off with a call to arms for DVD manufacturers everywhere, by expressing
how significant the DVD-player remains, will remain and how much of a
difference the right choice in this area can make. The friendly debate proved
both informative and of value, with both sides admitting it could transpire there
is no out and out victor in the battle and that both could eventually go into
production concurrently. Either way, the message for us is to wait and see; both
sides of the divide have a long way to go before they have the products and
proliferation needed to provide solid answers.
The press conference was mastered by the energetic Rob Follis, with the
drinks kindly supplied by Sony; something which might have caused the Wilson
Benesch team some concern…I noted the odd bottle of beer finely balanced on
top of some of their most prized and high-performance speakers by the end of
the speeches. A strong representation from all the top consumer magazines
was evident, but I’m not sure who was responcible.
trading places
While many of my fellow hacks were only in Bristol for the day, What’s New
was present the entire weekend, ensuring we left no stone uncovered in our
explorations. After all, there was a lot to see for the first time. In fact, it must
have been exciting because I completely forgot that the Arsenal game was live
on Sky Sports at around midday on Saturday. This was fortunate, because
there was undoubtedly more pleasure to be had giving ProAc’s Studio 130 and
Studio 140 a maiden listen than watching the Gooners surrender any waning
title hopes they might have had with a draw against Southampton. But I’m not
bitter…Honest.
As well as us press bods, the representation of members of the trade was
certainly noteworthy. Indeed, this extended beyond our shores, with a number
of exhibitors commenting on the volume of foreign distributors present.
Moreover, more than a few made export sales, whilst one company even
succeeded in signing up an American distributor, having failed to do so at CES
in Las Vegas.
In total 765 members of the press and trade attended the event, while its
pulling power amongst the consumer remains consistent. The numbers were up
slightly on last year, despite the continuing difficulties in the industry, which
have afflicted other events. The show was busy throughout Friday and most of
Saturday, as the public joined us in beating off the sub-zero temperatures and
snowy conditions to make their mark. And this they did, with plenty of high-value
sales having been reported. Huge sales of accessories such as headphones and
cables were also noted, whilst those with projectors on offer are said to have
fared particularly well this time around, shifting unusually large volumes of
these over the course of the weekend. Thanks to the continuing evolution of
Sound & Vision, a better class of attendee than ever was said to be present, with
attendance amongst younger people and women noticeably higher. Informed
buyers with cash on the hip are essential to a good show and it was interesting
to note increasing numbers of these roving around alongside the conventional,
anorak-sporting community, whom I’m sure I heard someone in the bar
describe as “the great unwashed”. Attendees were, Jerry Lewin confirmed,
“interested, knowledgeable and in buying mode.”
I didn’t leave with any new purchases, but I did struggle to make it to the
station weighed down with all the product information I could pack into my
already straining suitcase… and the bulging MJ Acoustics and Linn carrier bags
I’d acquired on my travels around the show. In three days one collates quite a
few press releases, particularly at a show with so much kit making its UK debut
proper. And, while a lot of new kit means the competition in the audio and AV
worlds is as tough as ever, there were many positives to take home from the
show. The projectors proved popular, the DLP TVs certainly caught the eye, the
furniture manufacturers were in great spirits and there were many sharply
styled new speakers to be seen. Never mind the snow; there was plenty of
business to be done and a host of new products worthy of warming the spirits of
every retailer, buyer and journalist who made the trip. Congratulations to
organisers Audio Excellence and Audio T, as well as all of the exhibitors – on the
basis of what we saw, there is plenty to be positive about in 2005.

TECHNOLOGY CORNER
Vieta are ready fo HDTV-are you?
Beat the Blus
Barcelona couldn’t do it, but HD-DVD just might. JAKE
STOW takes a look at Blu-Ray’s high-definition rival...
We might have expected that, after the counter-productive tussle between the
Betamax and VHS video formats, the major players in the AV industry would
have decided to put their differences behind them and set about creating
products that conformed to a global standard. Indeed, this golden-age
appeared to have arrived with DVD, but, just as it seemed that we’d turned a
corner, another major format war broke out and it doesn’t look like either side
are in the mood for compromise...
The battle this time is over the next generation of DVDs, discs whose larger
capacities will allow viewers to record and playback high-definition video and
enjoy an interactive experience far superior to what current DVDs can supply. We
brought you the lowdown on Blu-Ray, the format championed by the likes of
Sony, Philips and Sharp (amongst others) back in issue 17, so we thought it
high-time that HD-DVD received the same treatment...
HD-DVD doesn’t have it all its own way though. Blu-Ray offers equally impressive
pictures and offers a sizeable 10Gb of extra storage space over a single layer HDDVD, an ability that’s sure to appeal to many in the industry and general public
alike. The sheer number of big names behind the technology may also prove a
factor in the struggle, aside from those mentioned Hitachi, LG, Pioneer and
Samsung can also be counted amongst the manufacturers throwing their hat in
with Blu-Ray.
Out of the Blu
Disc-ussion...
With HDTV looming on the horizon the need for a high-definition storage
medium is clear to see: storing TV or films at such high-quality requires far
more memory than Standard Definition (SD) equivalents - a conventional DVD
with its 4.7Gb capacity will only stretch to 20-minutes of high-definition footage
in the MPEG-2 compression format. In response to this problem Toshiba and
NEC together put forward HD-DVD as a potential successor to DVD,
comprehensively updating what has undoubtedly been one of the most
successful AV products of all time.
HD-DVDs essentially have the same structure as their predecessors, each
disc made up of two back-to-back 120mm diameter substrates, each with a
depth of 0.6mm. However, as with Blu-Ray, the discs must be read or written to
with a blue laser, which has a shorter wavelength (405nm) than the red beam
currently employed (605nm). All discs store data in pits; spiral-shaped grooves
that run from the centre outward and the more data that needs to be stored, the
smaller these pits and the more precise the reading must be. Whilst the red
beam with its larger wavelength can’t cope with the capacity required for HDTV,
the blue beam can, resulting, in the case of HD-DVDs, with single-sided, single
layer discs that boast 15Gb of storage space.
This combination of current and brand new technology gives HD-DVD a
particular advantage over Blu-Ray, namely backwards-compatibility. This not
only means that standard DVDs will be able to be enjoyed on HD-DVD-players,
but also that manufacturers will only have to make minimal alterations to their
current production facilities, keeping the necessary investment to an absolute
minimum. The latter will doubtless have a knock-on effect for consumers,
keeping prices at a level likely to tempt more to upgrade from the off.
However, despite this high-profile backing, HD-DVD appears to have garnered a
lot of support itself, perhaps most evident in the fact that it has been approved
(unlike Blu-Ray) by the DVD forum. This 230-strong body comprises companies
from across the world, representing industries as diverse as Hollywood and
computing. Seeing as the forum gives its backing to only one technology, HD-DVD
seems to be well poised to become the leading visual medium for the highdefinition era.
That large sections of the movie industry have showed considerable
enthusiasm towards HD-DVD may have much to do with another of the format’s
strengths, namely security. Expected to employ a state-of-the-art system
developed by AACS LA (Advanced Access Content System License Administrator),
the commercialised discs should prove effective at stemming piracy, whilst BluRay currently only promises more limited copy-protection features.
It’s too early to know if HD-DVD will come out on top of its rival. It does seem
that the technology will become readily available relatively soon, with players,
recorders, PC drives and, of course, the discs themselves promised late this year,
though the lack of widespread HDTV in Europe may stunt the adoption of any
high-definition disc for some time to come. What is certain, however, is that the
format that offers consumers the most titles and the best functionality at the
lowest cost will come out on top in the end. Whether that’s HD-DVD or Blu-Ray
remains to be seen...

WORLD OF SEPERATES
The Hi-Files
Turn on and tune in as DARREN HARVEY
runs down some of the finest Hi-Fi
separates currently on the market...
There can be few households in the UK that don’t benefit
from some kind of audio entertainment: whether it’s the
informative strains of Radio 4 on the clock radio of a
morning or a CD on the stereo in the evening, the nation’s
homeowners are surrounded by sound. Consequently, the market
for audio equipment is a varied one, every need and every budget
catered for by a huge range of products...
Whilst many will be satisfied with a CD-player or radio that does its job
competently, those enthusiasts in search of uncompromising performance
will naturally seek out the very best options available. Often this will lead
them to invest in a number of separates, dedicated components that,
whilst they might have a heftier price tag than all-in-one systems, also
have the capacity to deliver the very best sound quality possible. Such
standalone amplifiers, receivers and sources are also crucial in the
increasingly popular home theatre set-ups, which can not only provide
superior audio, but excellent video entertainment as well. Put simply, for
those seeking high quality home entertainment, separates are a tempting
prospect. So, if you’re keen to keep up-to-date with what’s currently on

INSTALLATION FOCUS
Sound, vision and décor in perfect harmony
High-Tech
Homes
With the will, the skill and the right budget,
anything is possible in the modern home. JAKE
STOW introduces Dawsons Home Cinema and a
comprehensive domestic installation...
walls it would be hard to think of a better advert for what a smart installation
of any size can do for the nation’s abodes.
The necessary work was carried out by home entertainment specialists
Dawsons Home Cinema, a company with over 80-years of expertise in
delivering bespoke solutions to a wide range of customers, but the installation
was far from confined to audio-visual systems. Every room in the six-bedroom
mansion, which is to be found in Dorchester, benefits from high-tech
inclusions that combine to create what can only be referred to as a digital
dream home.
The devil, they say, is in the detail and Dawsons’ attention to the latter
stretched to the very smallest components – a major factor in winning the
company the contract. Their detailed costing and specification documentation
also ensured that the company had the complete confidence of the home’s
owners and led to a relationship conducive to achieving some truly spectacular
results.
rooms for improvement
Domestic home automation and home entertainment installations remain
expensive undertakings, at least for those that want them carried out in a
suitably professional manner. Enticing new customers into the market may be
important, but the fact remains that quality seldom comes cheap and, as long as
there are people willing to pay for the very latest and most effective piece of
equipment as soon as it becomes available, the very highest-end installations
around will remain beyond the means of the majority.
However, whilst you might assume that being confronted with a high-spec
smart home would have a negative impact on those who find that the complete
package stretches to more than their yearly wage packet, in reality such projects
do a great job of showcasing exactly what is available and how individual
systems or products can be incorporated into more humble abodes. They also,
of course, provide a glimpse of just what the future may hold for us all...
what’s install?
This issue’s installation illustrates the above perfectly: as complete an example
of an automated home as you could hope to find, its £400,000 price tag is clearly
a significant amount, but given the wealth of equipment to be found within its
30
It’s hard to pick any single standout room in such an expansive installation,
but the deceptively labeled Playroom certainly catches the eye. Following
an inspirational visit to Dawsons’ showroom, the clients’ original plans
were amended to include a high-spec home cinema, which presented the
design team with a unique set of challenges.
Located in a relatively narrow loft space, the equipment chosen needed
to deliver a memorable AV experience without overwhelming viewers. To
this end, a high-quality Sharp 16:9 DLP projector, displaying images with
the aid of an 8ft floor-to-ceiling Stewart Videomatte 200 VE-LUX screen,
was installed, along with a Pace Sky + box, a Sony PS2, a Lexicon RT10
DVD-player and a Panasonic NVHS830 S-VHS Stereo Hi-Fi VCR. As a result,
those in the Playroom can now enjoy DVDs, digital TV and video games,
surf the Internet and even work (via two RF keyboards) on the big screen.
When it came to audio, Dawsons were able to save space and exploit the
benefits of the micro-perforated screen (which permits sound to pass
through without risk of distortion) by hiding three of a complement of
Artcoustic speakers behind it. Ideal for situations in which an unobtrusive
solution is called for, the Danish company’s renowned products come as
Crestron’s TPS-5000LB provides
comprehensive home control
any Crestrons?
Another big contributor to the Playroom is Crestron, whose versatile control
systems can be found throughout the property. An AV2 10/100BaseT Ethernetcapable integrated control system sits at the centre of the set-up, featuring six
built-in COM ports, eight IR/Serial ports, eight I/O Versiports and eight isolated
relays. Capable of acting as an interface for projectors, VCRs, DVD-players and
screens amongst many other things, it’s complemented by a STRFGWXI two-way
remote RF receiver and a handheld STXI-1700c 5.7-inch touch-panel. Equipped
with the industry’s only hi-res active matrix display, it’s not difficult to see why
Dawsons selected this and Crestron’s other products for the job.
Whilst impressive, the Playroom is far from the be-all and end-all of the
installation. For example, the equipping of the Pool room was characterised by a
number of inherent difficulties that were overcome to great effect. Issues included
the hot and humid environmental conditions present, which were far from ideal for
standard AV kit, as well as the presence of hard tiles and the water itself, both of
which have negative effects on sound quality. Once again Artcoustic’s speakers
proved to be perfect for the audio reproduction duties and four full range DFF 12043 speakers were selected and installed safely behind splash resistant grills.
Elsewhere, a 50-inch Panasonic TH50PW5B display is housed safely inside a
waterproof glass box, itself recessed into the wall to facilitate outside ventilation.
The Pool room serves to further highlight the flexibility of Crestron’s control
options. A CT-1000 touch-panel, programmed for its role by Dawsons, gives users
control over the pool’s water slide and counter swim function, as well as providing
access to the audio-visual equipment in attendance.
Though apparent throughout the home, Crestron’s involvement is perhaps most
noticeable in the kitchen, where a master control panel is situated. The TPS5000LB is a stunning example of control technology, combining a 12-inch colour
touch-screen display with built-in amplified speakers and microphone. Thanks to
its ability to display up to three scalable real-time computer and video windows,
control of temperature, lighting and even garage doors or outdoor gates is simple
and effective. Users even have the ability to view footage from security cameras
located around the home from this central location.
there’s more...
High-end AV equipment allowed
Dawsons to make the most of
the narrow play room
slim as 2.5-inches and fit comfortably into a variety of interiors, thanks to a
sizeable catalogue of specified and bespoke finish and grill options. And,
quite apart from their considerable aesthetic benefits, every model in the
range makes use of hand-built crossovers, high-quality dynamic
Scandinavian drivers and low-resonance cabinets, which ensure that
impressive performance is provided whatever the source. Completing the
surround sound set-up, further examples of Artcoustic’s wares were
positioned at the rear of the Playroom.
Driving these loudspeakers is an array of amplification equipment,
including a Lexicon MC8 AV preamp and MPA4-400 and MPA6-80 power
amplifiers from Ecler, who also provide a 30-band equaliser.
Finally, leaving nothing to chance, Dawsons carefully placed the room’s
low-slung sofas at optimal viewing positions and employed dark suede
padding (a contrast to the Playroom’s bright walls) to guard against potential
audio and visual distortion.
As you’d expect, the Family room of the property was another ambitious
technological undertaking, Artcoustic, Panasonic and Crestron once again account
for a large part of the kit on show, with a Harmon/Kardon DVD 30 multi-region
DVD-player also in attendance. The bathrooms and several of the six bedrooms,
amongst them a particularly impressive Master with en suite, also benefit from
high-quality audio on demand and feature Panasonic displays. And you know an
installation is truly complete when even the landing incorporates Artcoustic
speakers...
The biggest challenge, by Dawsons’ project manager Robbie Simmond’s own
admission, was the study, which doubled as a main control room. Aside from a 22inch Panasonic TX-22LT2 display, the room was host to an incredible four racks of
specialist AV equipment, with 400 connections employed in the main cable network
alone.
Incredibly, there are several aspects of Dawsons’ installation that we haven’t
touched upon yet: the company supplied a comprehensive Lutron Homeworks
system, for example, which delivers intelligent and sophisticated lighting around the
property, via a host of the company’s products. Then there’s the phone system,
which makes use of a single Panasonic cordless KX-TCD515EM master and five
KX-TCA515EM slave phones. The list goes on and on...
Sadly, due to the constraints of space, this is where we must leave the property.
That the installation was a success is undeniable: Dawsons have succeeded in
creating a home that, whilst unashamedly high-tech, remains accessible and as
user-friendly as anyone could reasonably demand. Thanks to Crestron’s control
options and the skillful installation work described, entertainment and functional
systems alike are never more than a touch-screen button push away.
The role that high-end installations such as this can play in highlighting the
appeal of the industry as a whole has already been touched upon, but it bears
repeating. As the capabilities of home automation equipment becomes increasingly
widely known, the market for the technology is sure to broaden. After all, even
individual elements of the systems described can make a significant difference to
the contemporary home. And, with their benefits so skillfully highlighted by projects
like these, the home automation industry has much to be optimistic about...

TV. Versatile too, it allows a screen to be tilted up to 15º from vertical and from side
to side to ensure users benefit from the perfect viewing position. Bedecked in a high
quality, durable, silver finish, the TWM1 really is a snip at £119.99.

What’s New? Installer
COMPILED BY TOBY WATSON
UNSEEN OCTOPUS
Leading light of British
automation manufacturing, Opus
Technologies, have introduced a
new speaker pair to ease the
installation of their much lauded
Octopus. The AMR650 speakers are
designed to be ceiling mounted, allowing the
system to become virtually invisible once up and
running. It can be fitted and operated without wall
control keypads, whilst the speakers have grilles and
surrounds that can be painted to create a seamless match with the
surrounding décor. The AMR650 package comprises a matched active and
passive speaker pair, with the inbuilt stereo power amplifier and a wideangle infra-red receiving eye on the active speaker allowing the user to
access volume, tone settings and source selection controls room using an
elegant Octopus remote control. As this negates the need for a wall-based
controls, the system is ideal for retro-fitting, particularly as it only
requires a single run of Cat-5 from the hub to each active AMR650
location. Convenient for all, impressively functional and as discreet as
they come, the AMR650 is a snip at only £249.95.

WHAT’S NEW
ON THE MOUNT
PRAISE TO THE POD
British manufacturers of audio-visual touch-screen products might
be relatively hard to come by, but there is no ignoring
Worcestershire-based outfit Ikon AVS. The team’s Podule control
system should be familiar to all our readers by now, but what won’t
be is the spanking new 10-inch touch-screen the firm have
introduced. Offering an impressive level of processing from its
integral CPU, this free-standing unit offers the same features as its
smaller sibling. It includes, for example, Ikons’ own Touch Edit
software, enabling the creation of the user interface in a windows
environment. The control is then linked to the buttons and sliders
and the integrated CPU allows RS 232 and 485 control directly to a
device. In addition the PODNET link allows for the control of almost
an unlimited number of other devices such as DVD-players,
amplifiers, screens and projectors using infra-red, extra 232 ports,
relays, contact closure and a host of other features via connected
PODULES. Boasting a tiny footprint and a price tag of a meagre
£2,400, this afford installers the opportunity to offer their
customers a dynamic control for a relative pittance. It is available
through Warwickshire-based SSP Distribution.

TCI have introduced a new,
low-cost range of multimedia
mounts, available in different
four versions. Known as the
CM25 series, these allows a
projector to be held in a
number of positions.
However, whether held tight
to the ceiling or anything up
to 610 to 1170mm away from
it, the mounts incorporate
some clever brackets,
ensuring everything is kept
secure. The star
arrangement with spars
coming from a central plate
ensure that almost any
multimedia projector can be
fixed to the mount, whilst the
knuckle joint at the base of
the support allow it to be
adjusted in any plane, for tilt
and camber. Cables can be
tucked neatly away within the
column of the support
ensuring the projector can
slip as seamlessly into its
allotted position as possible.
Competitively priced, the
CM25 series constitutes an
excellent addition to TCI’s
fine range of screens.

TAKING STOCK
Last month, in an announcement that could have major repercussions for the
automation world, AMX Corporation and Duchossois Industries Inc. announced
that they have entered into a definitive agreement pursuant to which an affiliate of
Duchossois will acquire AMX. Under the terms of the agreement, AMX
shareholders will receive $22.50 per share in cash, a 28% premium over the
average closing price of AMX’s common stock for the 90 trading days ended
February 14, 2005. The total transaction is valued at approximately $315-million.
The Duchossois affiliate is expected to commence a tender offer for all of AMX’s
outstanding common stock which will, subject to extension in certain cases,
remain open for 20 business days following the commencement of the offer. “The
AMX Board of Directors and management team have determined that the
Duchossois offer is the best approach to maximise shareholder value,” said Bob
Carroll, AMX President and CEO. “The agreement signed with Duchossois
provides shareholders an excellent return on their AMX stock investment. Just
two years ago, AMX had a market capitalisation of approximately $12-million and
is today valued at approximately $315-million through the Duchossois offer. This
clearly is a win for our shareholders.”
The AMX Board of Directors has unanimously approved the transaction.
Consummation of the tender offer is conditioned upon matters customary in
similar transactions. The parties expect Duchossois’ acquisition of AMX to be
completed during the second calendar quarter of 2005. Following the Duchossois
affiliate’s acquisition of at least a majority of AMX’s fully diluted outstanding
shares in the tender offer, the Duchossois affiliate will merge with and into AMX,
with any shares not tendered in the tender offer being converted into the right to
receive $22.50 per share in cash, and employee stock options being exchanged for
$22.50 per share in cash, less the exercise price of such options.
AMX will continue to be headquartered in Richardson, Texas and will maintain
the AMX name and brand. The AMX management team, along with its employees,
will remain in place following the acquisition and business operations will
continue as usual. Shareholders, including AMX’s directors and officers, holding a
total of approximately 17.7% of the outstanding shares of AMX, have entered into
separate agreements pursuant to which they have agreed, subject to certain
conditions, to tender their shares in support of the transaction.
Carroll added, “AMX is pleased to join Duchossois Industries because of its
proven history of building successful businesses. We will continue to build upon
the solid platform we have established to grow AMX’s existing business. An
alliance with Duchossois will help accelerate new research and development and
acquisition programs that will enhance our growing product portfolio. Our proven
successes, coupled with Duchossois’ operating experience, relationships and
financial resources, will strengthen our industry leadership position and assure
our future growth.”
“We have a deep appreciation for the hundreds of individuals who have built
the impressive AMX organisation over the past two decades,” said Craig
Duchossois CEO of Duchossois Industries. “The strength of AMX’s management
team and employees has created an industry leader and top innovator of control
system technology.” Duchossois added, “Our goal is to significantly enhance AMX’s
leadership position through expanded research and development and acquisition
programs, enabling the company to grow into new markets. We look forward to
working with Bob Carroll and the rest of the AMX team to build upon the strengths of
this world-class company and deliver even greater value to its customers and
partners.”
Duchossois acquires and invests in companies with exceptional management
teams and compelling technology. Their holdings include The Chamberlain Group,
the world leader in consumer and commercial garage door openers and other access
control products, and Duchossois Technology Partners, which invests in advancedtechnology ventures.
AMX products enable residential and commercial customers to centrally manage
and control a variety of audio/video, environmental and communications technologies.
Customers also leverage the company's advanced hardware and software platforms
to store and distribute digital content, as well as to manage a selection of resources
and services. Regular AMX customers can be reassured that they’ll still be able to
place product orders and request technical support through the same contacts.
Customers’ direct sales, distributor and independent representation contacts will not
change, and AMX’s current relationship with its manufacturing and operations
partners and suppliers will not be affected. Clearly initiated in order to take the AMX
brand to the next level, this could register a profound impact on the company’s
progress as automation for residential application begins to hit the big time.

RIGHT ON TRACK
Custom installers note: SpeakerCraft, America's original manufacturer of inwall speakers, has for the 10th year in a row received Inside Track's award for
the highest ranking in the Custom Install Group Overall. According to Gisela
Schoell, Editor of Inside Track, "No other company has ever won first place
Overall this many years in a row in the 21 year history of this survey. The
closest other companies have come has been seven consecutive years.
SpeakerCraft's performance of sustained excellence is truly remarkable."
In 1995 Inside Track established a separate Custom Install Group in the
Supplier Loyalty Test survey, which also asks dealers, in a sidebar question, to
identify in each group the company that offers the best price and value. Once
again this year, SpeakerCraft claimed this award. The company also finished in
first place in its group on nine of Inside Track's 15 parameters. In terms of
grades, SpeakerCraft dealers awarded the company top tier (A+, A, A-) grades
on 13 of those 15 parameters and, in the case of Ease of Doing Business,
Product Changes/Price Protection and, most importantly, Overall, SpeakerCraft
was the only company in the group to achieve top tier grades.
"To achieve - and successfully defend - such an exalted position,” Schoell
explained, “SpeakerCraft has had to execute extremely well on the basics, but
also had to push the envelope on all fronts. While companies who follow a
loyalty-based business model need to be true to their bedrock principles, they
also have to adjust to, and even anticipate, market changes. For their 10 years
at the top of the Custom Installation Group I extend to everyone at SpeakerCraft
my warmest congratulations."
SpeakerCraft has been around since 1976 and is known as the prime
OEM for many well-known, in-wall speaker brands in the field, whilst its
own brand now constitutes one of the widest lines of architectural speakers
in the industry.

TIME FOR BED
Any so-called ideal home worth its salt demands the inclusion of some form of
smart technology. As a result the Daily Mail Ideal Home Show offers a fine
platform from which to promote the desirability and lifestyle enhancing benefits
that can be afforded by custom installation. In fact in previous years we’ve seen
some of our colleagues operating in the automation arena using it as a means to
meet their market. With an increasing number of shows to support, this year’s
representation of our industry has not been the greatest, but there was one
product which really caught the eye of our team that made the trip down to Earls
Court. And it is, perhaps, the ideal solution to offer those seeking entertainment
in their bedroom.
All of us are familiar with grandiose bedroom installations involving wall
mounted plasmas, speaker systems and a clever control mechanism, but now all
of this could be made a lot simpler thanks to the play bay 24/7, available from
Purely Plasma. Unveiled at the London show this month, this inviting bed,
powered by audio gurus Mission, includes a rotating and retractable 30-inch LCDTV with an inbuilt subwoofer and a DVD-player. It can also be supplied with a WiFi-enabled computer connection to the TV screen for web access, whilst additional
surround sound can be thrown into the mix courtesy of Mission’s fine M-Cube
speakers. "Play bay 24/7 is superbly styled to add cutting-edge chic to the
modern bedroom," explained Purely Plasma's Finnish-born Managing Director
Helen Wrede, who founded the Huntingdon-based group in recognition of the
need to marry interior design elegance with state-of-the-art home entertainment
technology. With such functional, fresh and attractive technology so effectively
woven into a bed, this would make an excellent and unusually straightforward
addition to an expansive, residential installation project. Thanks to Purely Plasma,
the difficult days of struggling to integrate a fully-fledged smart system
seamlessly into a bedroom’s carefully tailored decor could be over.

EXPO CONFERENCE
FOR ARCHITECTS AND
INTERIOR DESIGNERS
CEDIA is hosting a dedicated one-day conference at this year’s CEDIA Expo,
entitled, Home Electronics In Architecture And Interior Design.
Chaired by The Architects Journal magazine and supported by the Royal
Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the British Interior Design
Association (BIDA), this event will take place on Wednesday 29th June. It
will enable architects, interior designers and other building specifiers to
gain an understanding of the different elements involved in integrating
electronics within the home. The day is also designed so that conference
delegates have sufficient time to visit the Expo itself.
Four conference sessions will begin with CEDIA’s CPD course, Designing
Future-Ready Homes. This will be followed by a session looking at
technologies and techniques for designing and integrating home cinema and
whole house audio systems within the fabric of the home. A dedicated
course exploring approaches and benefits of advanced lighting control in the
home follows, and the conference ends with a session designed to offer
practical advice for architects and interior designers on how the skills of
custom electronics specialists can best complement their own.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION
PROGRAMME EXPANDS
Seven new manufacturer courses have just been registered as part of CEDIA’s
Professional Certification Programme.
The extended Professional Certification Programme now features six new
courses from AMX, covering Control Systems, GUI Design For Touch Panels,
AMX Programmer II, AMX Programmer III, Introduction to Control, and an
Introduction to AMX Control System Design. Also new to the Certification
Programme is a course from ARCAM entitled Delivering The Ultimate
Performance. Like all CEDIA training courses, each of these new
manufacturer courses offers certified members the appropriate number of
CEU’s (Continuing Education Units).
By establishing clear, objective standards for the required skills and
knowledge of electronics system designers and installers, the CEDIA
Professional Certification Programme delivers a range of benefits to
individuals, consumers and manufacturers. It establishes identifiable career
paths and promotes the development of a future workforce that can assure
the continued growth of the custom electronics industry.
To ensure the highest degree of professionalism and competency, all
CEDIA Certified Professionals must take a minimum number of CEU’s to
maintain their certification. CEDIA CEU’s provide a numeric value determined
by the course content and length. Acquiring CEU’s ensures that certified
designers and installers always possess the most up-to-date knowledge and
stay current in their skills and knowledge.
CEDIA’s intent is to advance the custom electronics industry through the
development and maintenance of a valid, credible and reliable certification
system based upon a sound structure and quality standards. Industry needs
will be met by establishing benchmarks for knowledge, performance, and
professionalism.
For further information about CEDIA’s Professional Certification
Programme, eligible courses and CEU’s, contact CEDIA’s Educational
Facilitator, Michael Eden at [email protected].
