Progressive Agriculture Safety Day®
Teaches Local Children Basics of Farm
Safety
Waterloo -- For many children,
the farm is a workplace, home
and playground. Teaching
them how to take responsibility for their own safety on the
farm is the subject of Agriculture Safety Day® at Dunkerton Elementary School in
Dunkerton, Iowa, on Tuesday,
May 8. Hosting the event is
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Black
Hawk County Farm Bureau in
conjunction with Progressive
Agriculture Foundation.
Farm Safety
Over 400 Iowans under the
age of 19 years are injured or
killed every year in farm accidents. The four major areas
that accidents occur on the
farm are near machinery and
equipment, livestock areas,
farm buildings and the farm
workshop.
Children most
readily identify with safety
habits followed by the adults
in their daily.
The day’s goals are to help
youth establish and maintain
safety attitudes and safe farm
behaviors throughout their live
and reduce the rate of deaths
and injuries among children on
the farm. During safety day
the youth will participate in interactive activities and learn-
ing stations. Some of the sessions include fire, first aide,
chemicals, sun, lawnmower,
bike safety, meth awareness,
internet safety plus many
more. In total, 16 different stations will be offered with the
help of local volunteers and
businesses.
Youth will receive a Safety
Day T-shirt as a reminder to
practice safe behavior on
farms and around their homes.
For more information on Agriculture Safety Day®, contact
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Black
Hawk County at 234-6811 or

Early
Childhood
Screenings
Area Education Agency 267 in
cooperation with the Dunkerton Community School District will hold a free Early
Childhood Hearing Screening.
AEA 267 personnel will
screen hearing for children
ages three through five years.
The screening will begin at
9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8,
2012 at the Dunkerton Elementary School, 509 Canfield
Street, Dunkerton, IA.
Each child’s parent or
guardian must complete and
sign a permission form prior to
the screening. Information
about these forms will be provided when you call for an appointment.
If your child has not yet entered kindergarten and has not
had a hearing screening earlier
this school year, you may
schedule an appointment by
calling Carmen Knebel at the
Dunkerton Elementary school,
319-822-4297 (ext. 4), between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Monday through Friday.
Good hearing ensures a more
positive school experience. As
a parent or guardian, you are
the best teacher of your child.
Help plan for your child’s education and future by attending
this free hearing screening.

THIS ISSUE
Mr. James C. Stanton, Superintendent
Good Luck
It is at this time every year that we have to
say good-bye to our seniors, and we do so
reluctantly as we have developed relationships with them that make it difficult to
watch them walk away. But we do so because we know that sooner or later they
are going to have to stand on their own
two feet, and we hope that we, along with
you the parents, have done a good job in
preparing them for that moment. With
that in mind, I would like to say, “GOOD
LUCK” to our outgoing seniors. I have
enjoyed being a part of your education and
watching you grow up, and wish the best
for you in whatever it is you decide to do.
We are also going to have to say good-bye
to some dear friends of Dunkerton Community Schools as we have five staff
members that have decided to retire. Ms.
Julie Woods, Mr. Jeff Thompson, Ms.
Cindi Thompson, Ms. Nancy Moss, and
Ms. Donita McCarville have all decided to
retire at the end of this school year. Words
alone cannot express my gratitude for all
of your years of service, for all the lives
you have touched, and for the difference
you have made in the lives of children. It
is a bittersweet moment as we prepare to
say good-bye and wish you the best of
luck, yet know that the shoes that you
have left to fill are huge. Thank you and
good luck to Ms. Woods, Mr. Thompson,
Ms. Thompson, Ms. Moss, and Ms. McCarville. May you find happiness in

We need volunteers to help serve on a few
committees:
We need at least one parent/community
member to serve on our School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) for the
next three years. This is a three year commitment, and involves helping to write,
oversee, and update the school’s Comprehensive School Improvement Plan. It also
means being involved in a State Site Visit
in a couple of years.
We are looking for volunteers to serve on
our assembly preview committee. Members of this committee will preview any
possible assemblies that would like to
come into our school and present to our
children. The time commitment will vary
depending upon how many assemblies we
are looking at possibly bringing in to the
school at any given time.
If you are interested in serving on either of
these committees, please contact the main
office and let Linda know.
Thank you again for helping to make
Dunkerton a great place to live, and
Dunkerton Schools a great place to be a
kid!!!

Grant Funds Awarded
to Iowa State University Extension to Promote
Healthy Living
Waterloo – The Wellmark Foundation presented over $400,000 to
three grant recipients in
Central Iowa, including
Iowa State University
Extension and Outreach. Awards focused
on initiatives encouraging healthy lifestyles
through programs that
will teach healthy behaviors to children and
school and community
gardens.
Iowa State University
Extension and Outreach
is one of four state cooperative
extension
services selected by the
United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) to work together to develop and
run the USDA Food and
Nutrition Service People’s Garden School
Pilot Program. The
program will allow for
gardening nutrition education with the goal of
empowering youth in
their communities and
will help increase fruit
and vegetable consumption in Iowa
schools. Nearly 3,000
young people at 17
schools and 20 summer
programs will start 130
edible gardens in the
next two years.
Participating schools in
the local area are Kittrell, Lowell and Poyner Elementary in Waterloo and Dunkerton Elementary. This pilot explores the impact of
school gardens on
learning and on changing student consumption patterns so they
make healthier food
choices. This year, stu-
dents in 2nd and 4th
grade at these schools
are completing lessons
and sampling a healthy
snack.
Students at
Dunkerton and Lowell
are planning and planting their own school
garden. ISU Extension
and Outreach specialists are participating in
the research, curriculum, and gardening
components of the program.
“The Wellmark Foundation grant will allow
us to expand the program to ensure that all
students in the participating schools will be
able to receive the same
opportunities,”
said
Janet Toering, 4-H
Youth Program Specialist. “The funding will
also help fund the project all year, including
after-school programs.”

Could That Business
Opportunity Be a Franchise Scam?
The lure of self-employment, and economic pressures, could be
driving enterprising individuals down the path
to a franchise scam.
A franchise is a business opportunity in
which individuals pay a
lump sum for a readymade operation, often
trading under a wellknown name.
Fast-food businesses
are a typical example of
a (legitimate) franchise.
Most of them appear to
be part of a national or
international chain, like
McDonalds for instance, but they're actu-
ally a locally-owned
business
operating
under the big-name
banner.
There are hundreds,
probably thousands, of
lesser-known franchises, and while the fast
food ones can cost a
fortune to buy into,
some of the lesser ones
require a considerably
smaller investment.
The franchise owner
buys a package of marketing materials and
training and must set up
a business that looks
like all the others that
share the name. In return, they often benefit
from national advertising and other types of
support, but usually
have to pay a monthly
percentage of their
earnings to the company that created the franchise.
In a franchise scam,
would-be entrepreneurs
pay to get into one of
these businesses, only
to find out either it
doesn't really exist or
the package they buy is
not worth the money.
Franchise scam artists
may make untrue or unrealistic claims about
the profit potential of
the business or fail to
disclose that the buyer
has to purchase supplies
from them at inflated
prices.
Earlier this year a wellknown con artist was
jailed for tricking thousands of people into
paying for a non-existent pet registry fran-
Looking to Start a
Tradition
raider baseball
Monday, April 30th,
brought about the start
of another baseball season. This season follows a historic campaign from the summer
of 2011 when the
Raiders won 20 games
and captured their first
conference
championship. However, don’t
assume last year was
just an aberration.
This year’s team looks
to find the same magic,
albeit, with a much different look compared to
the 2011 squad. Eight
seniors graduated from
last year’s team, but
don’t think the baseball
team of this year is expecting a huge step
back. Returning are
seven letter winners
from a year ago in
Hunter Wason, Jason
Bedard, Mitch Cox,
Jacob Sickles, Toby
Sires, Nick Anderson,
and Jordan Kubitz.
Each one of those players had significant contributions to the success
of the baseball program
last season. Aside from
that experience returning, a talented crop of
younger players and
newcomers has once
again added balance to
the team. The future
looks bright as long as
the players continue
putting in the work they
have shown thus far.
Please show the support
that was so evident on
the fields a year ago.
This young team will be
exciting to watch, as
they grow, improve,
and learn from the challenges every baseball
season brings. The first
pitch at home will take
place May 23rd, against
GMG. Come on out
and be witness to a program that wants to
make its community
proud. One by one the
players will attempt, to
their best ability, to
prove that 2011 was not
a one year wonder, but
the start of a tradition…..a tradition of
exciting baseball and
success!

and fly! “A belief is not an idea held
by the mind, it is an idea that holds the
mind” Elly Roselle
6. Give up complaining. Give up your
constant need to complain about those
many, many, maaany things – people,
situations, events that make you unhappy, sad and depressed. Nobody can
make you unhappy, no situation can
make you sad or miserable unless you
allow it to. It’s not the situation that
triggers those feelings in you, but how
you choose to look at it. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking.
7. Give up the luxury of criticism. Give
up your need to criticize things, events
or people that are different than you.
We are all different, yet we are all the
same. We all want to be happy, we all
want to love and be loved and we all
want to be understood. We all want
something, and something is wished by
us all.
8. Give up your need to impress others.
Stop trying so hard to be something
that you’re not just to make others like
you. It doesn’t work this way. The moment you stop trying so hard to be
something that you’re not, the moment
you take of all your masks, the moment
you accept and embrace the real you,
you will find people will be drawn to
you, effortlessly
9. Give up your resistance to change.
Change is good. Change will help you
move from A to B. Change will help
you make improvements in your life
and also the lives of those around you.
Follow your bliss, embrace change –
don’t resist it.
“Follow your bliss and the universe will
open doors for you where there were
only walls” Joseph Campbell
10. Give up labels. Stop labeling those
things, people or events that you don’t
understand as being weird or different
and try opening your mind, little by little. Minds only work when open. “The
highest form of ignorance is when you
reject something you don’t know anything about.” Wayne Dyer
11. Give up on your fears. Fear is just an
illusion, it doesn’t exist – you created
it. It’s all in your mind. Correct the inside and the outside will fall into place.
“The only thing we have to fear, is fear
itself.” Franklin D. Roosevelt
12. Give up your excuses. Send them
packing and tell them they’re fired.
You no longer need them. A lot of
times we limit ourselves because of the
improving ourselves
and our lives, we get stuck, lying to
ourselves, using all kind of excuses –
excuses that 99.9% of the time are not
even real.
13. Give up the past. I know, I know. It’s
hard. Especially when the past looks so
much better than the present and the
future looks so frightening, but you
have to take into consideration the fact
that the present moment is all you have
and all you will ever have. The past
you are now longing for – the past that
you are now dreaming about – was ignored by you when it was present. Stop
deluding yourself. Be present in everything you do and enjoy life. After all
life is a journey not a destination. Have
a clear vision for the future, prepare
yourself, but always be present in the
now.
14. Give up attachment. This is a concept
that, for most of us is so hard to grasp
and I have to tell you that it was for me
too, (it still is) but it’s not something
impossible. You get better and better at
with time and practice. The moment
you detach yourself from all things,
(and that doesn’t mean you give up
your love for them – because love and
attachment have nothing to do with one
another, attachment comes from a
place of fear, while love… well, real
love is pure, kind, and self less, where
there is love there can’t be fear, and because of that, attachment and love cannot coexist) you become so peaceful,
so tolerant, so kind, and so serene. You
will get to a place where you will be
able to understand all things without
even trying. A state beyond words.
15. Give up living your life to other people’s expectations. Way too many people are living a life that is not theirs to
live. They live their lives according to
what others think is best for them, they
live their lives according to what their
parents think is best for them, to what
their friends, their enemies and their
teachers, their government and the
media think is best for them. They ignore their inner voice, that inner calling. They are so busy with pleasing
everybody, with living up to other people’s expectations, that they lose control over their lives. They forget what
makes them happy, what they want,
what they need….and eventually they
forget about themselves. You have one
life – this one right now – you must
live it, own it, and especially don’t let
other people’s opinions distract you
from your path

15 Things to Make you Happier many
use. Instead of growing and working on
Here is a list of 15 things
which, if you give up on
them, will make your life
a lot easier and much,
much happier. We hold on to so many
things that cause us a great deal of pain,
stress and suffering – and instead of letting them all go, instead of allowing ourselves to be stress free and happy – we
cling on to them. Not anymore. Starting
today we will give up on all those things
that no longer serve us, and we will embrace change. Ready? Here we go:
1. Give up your need to always be right.
There are so many of us who can’t
stand the idea of being wrong – wanting to always be right – even at the risk
of ending great relationships or causing
a great deal of stress and pain, for us
and for others. It’s just not worth it.
Whenever you feel the ‘urgent’ need to
jump into a fight over who is right and
who is wrong, ask yourself this question: “Would I rather be right, or would
I rather be kind?” Wayne Dyer. What
difference will that make? Is your ego
really that big?
2. Give up your need for control. Be willing to give up your need to always
control everything that happens to you
and around you – situations, events,
people, etc. Whether they are loved
ones, coworkers, or just strangers you
meet on the street – just allow them to
be. Allow everything and everyone to
be just as they are and you will see
how much better will that make you
feel.
“By letting it go it all gets done. The
world is won by those who let it go.
But when you try and try. The world is
beyond winning.” Lao Tzu
3. Give up on blame. Give up on your
need to blame others for what you have
or don’t have, for what you feel or
don’t feel. Stop giving your powers
away and start taking responsibility for
your life.
4. Give up your self-defeating self-talk.
Oh my. How many people are hurting
themselves because of their negative,
polluted and repetitive self-defeating
mindset? Don’t believe everything that
your mind is telling you – especially if
it’s negative and self-defeating. You are
better than that.“The mind is a superb
instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive.” Eckhart Tolle
5. Give up your limiting beliefs about
what you can or cannot do, about what
is possible or impossible. From now
on, you are no longer going to allow
your limiting beliefs to keep you stuck
in the wrong place. Spread your wings

chise that would supposedly
help animal lovers to trace
their lost pets.
The scam included phony references and accounts, and
claimed participants would be
able to sell, for $20 apiece, a
collar marking kit that would
cost them only $5.
Victims invested from $5,000
to $50,000 only to discover the
registry, the marking kits and,
in fact the whole business, did
not exist.
Many other franchise scams
are similar to some of the
phony home business opportunities, like envelope stuffing,
we've written about in the past.

Most of them are promoted
through telemarketing calls
peppered with false promises,
where victims are put under
pressure to make a quick decision to part with their money.
The law, however, forbids
them from doing this. A franchise seller must provide
what's called a Disclosure
Document at least 10 days before you invest.
This has to include details like

the names and phone numbers
of other franchise owners, an
audited statement covering financial performance, all of the
true costs of running the business and verifiable information about the people behind
the franchise program.
If you're considering buying
this type of business, here are
some tips to avoid a franchise
scam:
* If you don't get a disclosure
statement, don't invest.
* If you do get one, read it
from cover to cover -- some of
them are very long -- including
the small print.
* Contact the other franchise
owners and speak to them,
preferably face-to-face in their
business environment so you
can sense if they're telling the
truth.
* If your investment is going
to be large, seek professional
advice from a lawyer or reputable financial advisor.
* Use the "too good to be true"
rule: beware of franchises with
a low entry cost with supposedly big earnings potential, or
which don't have fairly rigid
rules to follow. Reputable programs are normally very specific about what you have to
do as an owner.
* Do your homework: research
the franchise online. What are
others saying about it?

Before we sign off, we wanted
to warn about another investment-related scam: so-called
phantom regulators, or fake securities regulators.
They set up websites and letterheads using official-sounding names that seem to imply
they're official bodies handling
recovery claims for investors
who've
previously
been
scammed.
They then ask users for confidential financial information
or even impose a fee supposedly for processing the claim,
which, of course, never takes
place.
According to an article in the
financial magazine Forbes, the
North American Securities Administration
Association
(NASAA) recently issued a
warning to one site operator,
with a very official-sounding
name, that appeared to be
using modified NASAA content for unlawful purposes and
falsely claiming to have been
chartered by Congress.
The site has subsequently shut
down.
NASAA has produced its own
list of the most common signs
of a phantom regulator, including:
* Check the name of the supposed regulator with the International Organization of Securities
Commissions
(www.iosco.org). If it's not
there, it's likely a scam.
* It appears to promote some
kind of investment. Genuine
regulators don't and can't do
that.
* No other information about
the organization can be found
online.
You can also contact your state
securities regulator to check
them out. You'll find a full list
on the NASAA site at:

This, and our warning about
franchise scam artists, underlines the fact that, when it
comes to investing and protecting your hard-earned cash,
you can never let your guard
down.
That's all for today -- we'll see
you next week.
