These two cannon were representative of the guns brought by Governor Tryon and used by the militia during the Battle of Alamance. This view of the firing was taken by a drone being used by Chris Laforet of ShutteRelease Films as the group prepares a documentary entitled “The Regulators: Liberty or Death.” This documentary when completed will be shown at various film festivals around the state and nation. Chris, his wife, Sherry Laforet, daughter Beka Laforet, Forris Day Jr. and John Maynard spent Saturday and Sunday recording video clips and taking still shots for this project. The entire staff of the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site will be featured in this documentary as well as Alamance Battleground Friends Board members Carole Troxler and Ted Henson. In addition to the filming at the battleground, additional filming will take place at Tryon’s Palace, Cowpen’s Battleground and at Old Salem in Winston Salem. Page 2 THE REGULATOR Allen Family Makes Memorial Gift to Allen House Fund The family of Katherine Margaret Allen recently made a memorial gift to the Allen House Fund. Katherine Margaret Allen, 62, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014 after a tragic vehicle accident. She was born in Knoxville, TN to Charles Fletcher Allen (deceased) and Katherine Weis Bradstreet Allen. She graduated from Hillsdale College (BS), Michigan State University (MA) and Regent University (MA). She was the founder of Sought Out Inc. and White Stone Ministries. We wish to express our sincere sympathy to the Allen family and our great appreciation for this memorial gift. This gift will assist with the upkeep of the Allen house as we use this valuable property to tell the story of our heritage as Americans to future generations. Fiber to Fabric Second Saturday Event O n Saturday, June 14, 2014, Alam a n c e Battleground hosted a Living History Saturday entitled, “Fiber to Fabric.” This event featured the history of textiles which is such an important part of the history of Alamance County. Numerous volunteers participated along with representatives from the Alamance County Historical Museum and Glencoe Textile Heritage Museum. A highlight of the event was the restoration of the Coble Loom (c.1810) in the Allen House. Many years ago the warp in the loom had been destroyed by rodents. But thanks to the hard work of Susan Sharpe and Robert McKean (pictured above) the loom was up and running again for the event. Robert McKean handcrafted many of the wooden parts that had been damaged in the loom. Our sincere thanks to these two wonderful volunteers for all their hard work in making this possible. Its great to see the loom working again at Alamance Battleground. (Depicted below, Tammy Sharpe tries her hand at the Loom. On Friday, May 9, Robert Cox, Vice President of the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau of the Alamance-Burlington Chamber of Commerce traveled to the N.C. Welcome Center in Norlina (on Interstate 85) to set up a display of sites and events in Alamance County. Included in his display were notices of upcoming events at Alamance Battleground as well as basic visitor information about our site. We are very appreciative of the work of the Chamber of Commerce and particularly of Robert Cox for all the things he does to help spread the word about the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site. Robert has been a member of the Board of the Alamance Battleground Friends since its founding and currently serves as Vice President of the group. Thanks Robert for a job well done in helping spread the word about all the sites within Alamance County. Photo by Robert Cox Page 4 Alamance Battleground Friends, Inc.
