Instructors’ Biographies: Glen Matsuda, 6th Dan, is chief instructor of Rockland Aikido. Beginning his Aikido study in 1970, he has studied under several instructors and had been with Toyoda Shihan since 1974. Matsuda Sensei has been an assistant instructor at Tenshinkan Dojo, headquarters of the AAA, and has taught programs in Illinois, Indiana and Rockland County, NY. He is a member of the Northeastern Division Teaching Committee. In addition, Matsuda Sensei has studied Shodo, or Japanese calligraphy for 8 years with Nihon Shuji, receiving the rank of Shodan. Steve Kanney is the chief instructor of the Aikido Westchester Dojo and teaches the majority of the classes. He began martial arts training in 1972, and Aikido in 1978. While starting with a student of Yamada Sensei, he first met Morihiro Saito Sensei at a 10 day seminar in the United States in 1979. While he was not able to move to Japan as a formal student of Saito Sensei, he did continue to follow his seminars in the U. S. and practice on his own in addition to his regular Aikido training. He moved to New York in 1983 and first met Seiichi Sugano in 1989. His practice gravitated towards Sugano Sensei's approach over time, while he continued to accumulate experience with Morihiro Saito Sensei. With the passing of sensei’s Sugano (2010) and Saito (2002), he eventually found his way to the Takemusu Aikido Association under the direction of Hoa Newens Sensei 7th Dan. He also finds opportunities to train at seminars with Hitohiro Saito as well as other senior Takemusu Aikido Association instructors. Aikido of Norwalk chief instructor Corey Guilbault began his training in 1989 while in college at Syracuse University. Upon graduation, he enrolled as a student of Tenshinkan Dojo, headquarters of the Aikido Association of America, under the late F. Toyoda Shihan. Several years later, Mr. Guilbault moved to Brooklyn, New York where he became a student of Shaku Joseph Jarman Sensei at the Jikishinkan Dojo. Awarded his Shodan during his years at Jikishinkan Dojo, Guilbault Sensei went on to instruct numerous classes at the dojo and spent several years as the director of the dojo children's program. In 1999 Guilbault Sensei moved to Norwalk, Connecticut, where at the request of Toyoda Shihan, and with the support of the Aikido Association of America, he founded Aikido of Norwalk. Today Mr. Guilbault is a student of G. Noble Sensei and he has affiliated Aikido of Norwalk with the Zenshinkai Aikido Association where he also serves as a member of the Teaching Committee. Stewart Johnson Sensei began his Aikido and formal Buddhist training in 1992 at Jikishinkan Dojo under Joseph Jarman Sensei. Currently ranked Yondan (fourth degree black belt), he became Chief Instructor and Dojo-cho of Jikishinkan Dojo in 2005. Johnson Sensei was fortunate to have been able to attend seminars and receive instruction from Shihan Fumio Toyoda from 1992 until 2001, when Toyoda Sensei tragically and unexpectedly passed away. In 2011 Jikishinkan Dojo affiliated with the Zenshinkai Aikido Association, an organization founded by Greg Noble Sensei to continue Toyoda Sensei's Aikido teaching and legacy. Johnson Sensei serves on the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Buddhist Association and is a member of the Zenshinkai Aikido Association teaching committee. His goal as both an Aikido student and teacher is to fully realize the truth of O'Sensei's statment: "Opponents confront us continually, but in reality there is no opponent there."
