uying a home in
East Sacramento
is like buying
blue chip stocks,
said Realtor David Kerrene
of Dunnigan Realtors.
“It’s an investment.
Home prices are usually
one of the last to go down
in the area and the first to
go up.”
East Sacramento is a
highly desirable area with
traditional homes. There
are Tudor, bungalow, colonial, California craftsman,
Spanish and mid-century
modern architectural
styles.
Interiors have hardwood
floors, built-ins and traditional floor plans.
Residents like the mature trees that shade the
streets, Kerrene said. They
enjoy being out walking
around.
“I can look out my window and see people walking and kids playing. It’s
safe here and there’s a real
strong sense of community.”
“It’s like ‘Leave it to
Beaver’ — the good parts,”
he said.
Residents can walk down
the streets and wave to 20
people, he said. Drivers
often pull over to talk to
someone.
“I grew up here and now
I’m raising my kids here.
They’re going to the same
school I did.”
East Sacramento is within the Sacramento Unified
School District.
Schools include David
Lubin, Theodore Judah,
Phoebe Hearst and Caleb
Greenwood elementary
schools and Kit Carson
Middle School. Private
schools in the area include
Christian Brothers, Jesuit,
St. Mary’s and Sacred
Heart.
Kerrene’s parents live in
the same house he grew up
in and he lives across the
street from them.
“I always see a cousin in
the neighborhood,” he
said.
East Sacramento landmarks and events bring
residents outdoors and
attract visitors.
“McKinley Park draws

The parade starts in the

There are dogs and

“We claim that it’s the

East Sacramento dates
back to the early 1900s,
Kirrene said. Homes in the
Fabulous Forties were built
in the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s
and McKinley Park homes
were built in the 1920s and
’30s.
Homes in Meister Terrace, near C Street, Elvas
Avenue and McKinley
Boulevard, and River Park,
the area between Elvas
Avenue and the American
River, were built in the
1940s.
Entry-level homes currently are $350,000.
“It’s difficult to find
homes under $350,000,”
Kerrene said. “The average
price is $590,000 for homes
with good floor plans and
