Summer 2016 - Calvary Children`s Home
k y n o a uf h t or e W Summer Issue | July 2016 r Ye a s 5 0 1966 - 2016 Calvary Children’s Home Celebrates 50 Years As we celebrate 50 years of service to children, we want to take a different approach in recognizing this unbelievable milestone. I don’t know if our founder, Rev. Ben F. Turner, ever envisioned the growth and support our friends and contributors would help us experience. His, and our, dependence was entirely upon a gracious God. He has cared for us by bringing churches, individuals, civic clubs, businesses and community leaders alongside us to send a powerful message of hope to the young people entrusted to our care. Rev. Ben F. Turner Founder Rev. Snyder Turner Executive Director As I reflected over the past years, I considered how we could recognize this undeserved blessing. I believe the appropriate thing is to place the attention where it belongs — on the God who inspired us and the friends who have supported us. Rather than having some high profile event designed to recognize Calvary, we have chosen instead to thank our faithful and caring friends who made this ministry possible. Without your awareness, compassion and involvement we would never have existed these 50 years without incurring any debt and without looking to the government for support. We certainly have no criticism for others who choose another method of funding, we just chose a different path and you have faithfully and graciously walked this path with us. We have faced challenges over the years with the shifts in the economy as have each of you. We are mindful that charitable giving in such times is even more demanding and impacting on our friends who continued to stand with us. We have never been unaware of how blessed we are to have friends who give when they could easily have used those resources for their own needs. Rather than feeling entitled, we are even more humbled by your kindness. You have sacrificed for our children and I am unable to express how encouraged and honored we are to call you friends of Calvary. So as we celebrate 50 years of ministry and our “golden anniversary” of service - we turn the spotlight on you, our amazing friends, and to a loving heavenly Father for His amazing grace. Our desire is that you are pleased to be a partner with us for children. Thank you - times 50!!! Brian Busby Campus Director 1966 “If children can’t have the love and guidance of parents; they should, at least, be able to live together as brothers and sisters. If I could build a home large enough, I could keep all of the children of one family together.” - Rev. Ben F. Turner, Founder 2016 “In an era when too many people are willing to sit back and let government be the one that helps out in times of need, it is heartening to see privately operated charities such as Calvary doing such a wonderful job. Calvary and those who support it have provided an invaluable service to Cobb County in the past years, and deserve the community’s heartfelt thanks as they prepare to begin a new chapter in their good deeds.” - Editorial page, Marietta Daily Journal 1996 I N T H E I R OW N WO R D S . . . “I just want to thank you for 7 wonderful years. It has been amazing. I love you all so much. Coming here as a shy 14 year old and now a wonderful 21 year old has been amazing.”. . . Chelsea M. “I just retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years and if it wasn’t for the love and a whole lot of guidance from the house parents and Uncle Snyder, I wouldn’t have made it a week in the Army. I feel it was an honor and gift from the Lord and a true challenge for Uncle Snyder that I was blessed to be in Calvary Children’s Home. Although I could not tell at the time, those were the best days of my life. Please keep the fire that has burned in each of you to do what you have done through the years. Thank you” . . . Johnny A. “When I came to Calvary Children’s Home, I was a damaged little girl from years of abuse who was mad at the world for the suffering I had been put through. I fought everybody and I did not trust anyone. Above all, I refused to get close to anyone for fear of being abandoned again. It was a long time before my pain began to heal. It wasn’t until I accepted the Lord (at age 14) that I began my long trip to forgiveness. It was hard to face those who had hurt me and to forgive them. But when I did, I finally began to heal. Calvary Children’s Home was there for me every step of the way and I began to grow into a strong and good woman. Someday I hope to have a degree in Early Child Development and to have my very own family with beautiful children of my own to love.” . . . Jessica K. “I am so blessed to be a part of an amazing family . . . one that loves me and takes care of me. You keep pouring your love over me and I am truly thankful for that. My hope is that one day I will be able to give back to Calvary and love children the way you all have. I want to be a kid who is not always receiving but one who is giving. Thank you for loving me and not giving up on me. Thank you for helping me to make my dreams come true. Thank you for having an amazing impact in my life. God will bless you for loving every child at Calvary the way you have. I am honored to say that I have the best family in the entire world. Thank you for making a difference in my life.” . . . Jennifer L. “I was an angry child. I think I still hold the record for the number of fist fights at my elementary school. But through the love, compassion and help of my house parents, I was able to turn things around. You can’t change the past, but you can learn to accept it. Growing up in Calvary, once I married, I wanted to give back to Calvary what they had given to me. My wife and I became house parents and the one thing that I offer these kids is my experience. When they would come in from the bus stop crying or sitting at the table silent for no apparent reason, I know where they’re coming from, because I was that kid. Our job as their houseparent was to help them see that we really love them and more importantly that God loves them and that we’ve all been brought to Calvary for a specific purpose.” . . . C.J. M. “Thank you for helping me get to the point that I am in my life. Words cannot express what you and the Home mean to me. I will never forget where I came from and who has helped me out tremendously. Jesus Christ has blessed me by putting me in the Home. I am glad that Rev. Ben Turner listened to God and founded Calvary. I have been a better person because of my experience that I have encountered while at the Home.” . . . Tim J. There are not enough words or deeds that I could ever do to repay the debt I owe to each and every one of you. If it had not been for you so many years ago, I don’t know where I would be today. I’m just one of the many lives you’ve touched over the years, and I pray that you will touch many more in years to come. You are all role models for me and always have been. I love you all from the bottom of my heart.” . . . Mike R. YOU HELPED MAKE THIS POSSIBLE! TRIBUTE GIFTS Charles & Melinda Bruce M/M Thomas Franks Barbara Fain Mr. Charles L. For your taxdeductible memorial/honor gift of $125, we will recognize your loved one or friend with a beautiful commemorative brick proudly displayed on our campus. The bricks will serve as a constant source of encouragement to the children of Calvary and a reminder for years to come of the commitment and generosity of the individuals, churches and organizations that have helped provide a home for our children while honoring the life of the one remembered. We will acknowledge your gift with a personal letter and receipt. Also, their name, as well as yours, will be included in a subsequent newsletter to acknowledge your thoughtful gift. This can be initiated through a check or online giving by visiting our website at calvarykids.org. If you are interested, please contact Benita at [email protected] and she will gladly send you information necessary to remember your special person with a commemorative brick on campus. ∏ WE APPRECIATE your prayers for our children and staff. We value them as our most important resource. 1430 Lost Mountain Road Powder Springs, GA 30127 Phone: (770) 794-1500 www.calvarykids.org CALVARY NEWS . . . Ariel received the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. (Special congratulations to Ariel!) Summer practice is in full swing for Edwin, Kenny, Noah and Micah who will be playing high school football in the fall. And, Preston made the honor roll at Kemp Elementary. (Way to go, Preston!) We presently have 24 children in our Calvary family . . . 18 boys and 6 girls. We want to insure that our children’s lives, attitudes, and hopes are being built upon one of the most powerful messages they will ever know in God’s love—they are special and unique; they do matter, and they are loved. We are very grateful for everyone who continues to support this ministry. It takes many caring hearts to shoulder the weight of a child’s life. Thank you for helping our ministry carry this precious load. Praise the Lord for all He has done for this home, for our children, for these five decades.
