Bill looks as if he’s screaming in pain from Michael’s firm grip but don’t be alarmed! They are only joking around. It’s their “secret” handshake! Lu gets a special visit from her Nephew for her birthday! As most of you know I am from Milwaukee Wisconsin. Milwaukee and Great Falls have a very long history. There are a lot of Milwaukee ties to Montana, because of the Milwaukee Road. The rail transported furs and heavy metals back to Milwaukee. In turn many settlers came from Milwaukee to Great Falls on the railroad to start a new life. History amazes me. The items we learn about the future I believe come from the past. One of my most prized possessions is a music box that I received from my mother. She is the great-granddaughter of Valentine Blatz, which makes me the great-great grandson. Valentine Blatz kept this music box on his desk in the brewery until his death in 1894. Valentine Blatz (October 1, 1826 – May 26, 1894) was a GermanAmerican brewer and banker. He was born in Miltenberg, Bavaria and worked at his father's brewery in his youth. In August 1848 Blatz immigrated to America and by 1849 had moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Blatz established a brewery next to Johann Braun's City Brewery in 1850 and merged both breweries upon Braun's death in 1852. He also married Braun's widow. The brewery produced Milwaukee's first individually bottled beer in 1874. It incorporated as the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company in 1889 and by the 1900s was the city's third largest brewer. Blatz died in St. Paul, Minnesota, while returning home to Milwaukee from a trip to California. He was survived by a wife, three sons, and two daughters. He is buried in a massive family mausoleum at Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee. -Dave Krebs, Assisted Living Manager The Grandview Krewe! Residents celebrated Mardi Gras by decorating masks, singing and parading around the Grandview handing out beads and masks to residents, staff and visitors. Seasonal Allergies With spring hopefully approaching some of us may experience allergy symptoms, such as watery, burning eyes, running nose, itchy skin, etc. Some are quick to go to the medicine cabinet and take something to help and some believe “I’ve always dealt with this” and take nothing . . . neither are very good solutions! The Grandview nurses are here to help! Ask us for some guidance on what medications are available. We can contact your physician and the pharmacy to ask these questions for you. Never take a medication unless you know it will not interact with any other of your routine medications. Have a wonderful spring! Wendy Smith, RN/BSN—Clinical Leader at the Grandview Assisted Living Cabin Fever! It’s been another long Montana winter and the residents and staff at Grandview are looking forward to warmer weather and longer days. We know spring is right around the corner because the tulips are starting to peek out of the soil and snow! We have many things planned this spring and summer to cure our cabin fever including fishing, picnics, boat rides, gardening, yard games, walks outside, scenic drives, outdoor barbeques and a summer concert series just to name a few! Be on the lookout for upcoming special events and outings. If you or someone you know is interested in assisting with an outing or event, contact Cale or Michael in the Life Enrichment Department at 771-6206. Bring on the sunshine! Got Books? We are building up our library and would love to take your gently used books off your hands. If you have any books to donate please contact Cale or Michael in the Life Enrichment Department at 771-6206. Valentine’s Day was made extra special this year with a little help from Great Falls Floral. They made it possible for each of the ladies in AL to receive a beautiful red rose.
