2014 In Review
Last year was an active year for our section. The following list provides an overview of
some 2014 highlights. We are very grateful for the help and support of other
individuals and organizations that made these moments possible.








January – Toured the Bartow Combined Cycle Power Station
February – Engineering Week Banquet
March – Timothy L. Hunt, PE, won the Florida West Coast Section of ASME’s
Engineer of the Year
August – Bob Andrew won a lifetime achievement award as the ‘Dedicated
Service Award of 2013’. The world lost Clarence Prince.
September – Pinellas County Solid Waste Industrial Water Treatment Facility
tour. Paul Stevenson presented to USF Polytechnic students and faculty.
October – Michael Mills was awarded the Helen and Clarence Prince
scholarship
December – Yuengling Tour presented by ASME FWCS and FWC ASHRAE. FWCS
holiday dinner.
February, October, and November FIRST Robotics events.
With help from members like you, we look forward to building on this momentum for
2015.
FWCS’ New Chair and Vice-Chair
A fantastic professional opportunity came to our 2014-2015 chair Magdalena
Krstanoski. To best serve her professional goals and those of ASME she made the
heavyhearted decision to step down. Timothy Hunt will serve as the chair for the
remaineder of the term, and Nyssa Masters was elected the new Vice-Chair. FWCS is
excited for Magdalena and wishes her success. We also look forward to Timothy and
Nyssa’s leadership for the new year.
The Next Step for ASME FWCS
Today’s digital world enables open and engrossing communication. In an effort to unify
our engineering community over the next year we encourage members to frequent
www.asme.org, and to represent your section by joining the FWCS group.
Joint FWCS ASME and ASHRAE FWC Yuengling Tour
On December 12, 2014 FWCS joined the local ASHRAE chapter (Florida West Coast) for a tour of the Tampa
Yuengling facility. The 17 of us were guided by Maureen Brake and Santo Lazzara. Ms. Brake, our tour guide,
delivered an energetic presentation of the brewing facilities and cleverly interlaced Yuengling’s history along
the way. Mr. Lazzara, the facility’s engineer, showed us components from the chilled water, ammonia, and
carbon dioxide recovery systems on the second half of the tour. Not intimidated by the group of engineers,
Mr. Lazzara challenged his audience with a series of questions that expanded our understanding and reminded
participants the importance of scientific fundamentals. After completing the tour we gathered in Yuengling’s
biergarten and sampled a variety of their fine product. Ms. Brake and Mr. Lazzara were a dynamic duo and
both organizations greatly appreciated their time and expertise. FWCS would also like to thank Mike Costello
and Christopher Pille from ASHRAE FWC for their collaboration on the event. We look forward to many future
opportunities of shared enjoyment and involvement.

2014 FWCS ASME Holiday Dinner
We celebrated the year end at Lee Roy Selmons on December 17, 2014. About a dozen professionals and
several students came to enjoy dinner with their fellow peers. The room was brimming with pleasant
conversation as people filled their plates with delicious food from the buffet. Timothy Hunt was introduced as
our new chair. In his address he announced his term goals – increase involvement from members and their
families, to be an organization of professional stewardship, and to enhance the availability of resources.

Tampa Bay E-Week Banquet Keynote Speaker: Dr. Story Musgrave
Story Musgrave was born in 1935 on a dairy farm in
Stockbridge, MA. He was in the forests alone at 3
and by 5 years old he floated his home built rafts on
the rivers. He rode combines at 5, drove trucks and
tractors at 10 and when alone in remote fields,
repaired them by 13. Story never finished school
since he ran off to Korea with the U.S. Marines
where he was an aircraft electrician and an engine
mechanic. He started flying with the Marines and
over the next 55 years accumulated 18,000 hours in
over 160 aircraft. He is a parachutist with over 800
free falls. He has 7 graduate degrees in math,
computers, chemistry, medicine, physiology,
literature and psychology. He has been awarded 20
honorary doctorates. He was a part-time trauma
surgeon during his 30 year astronaut career. Story
was a NASA astronaut for over 30 years and flew on
six space flights. He performed the first shuttle
spacewalk on Challenger's first flight, was a pilot on
an astronomy mission, conducted two classified
DOD missions, was the lead space walker on the
Hubble Telescope repair mission and on his last
flight, he operated an electronic chip
manufacturing satellite on Columbia.
