Overview

Match-funding for Phonics
What’s the deal?
The Government announced in April 2011 that
match-funding of up to £3,000 will be provided
for schools in England to buy systematic synthetic
phonics products and training from an approved
list in its catalogue ‘The Importance of Phonics’.
The Department appointed ESPO (on behalf of
its partners in the Pro5 group of
Professional Buying Organisations)
to procure the products and training
services from multiple suppliers and to
manage the match-funding.
For eligible products (so far, from Pearson these are
Phonics Bug, Sound Discovery and Professional
Development), the Government will match every
£1 you spend up to £3,000, so you can purchase
up to £6,000 of resources in total. You can spend
the money all in one go, or spread it out between
September 2011 and March 2013.

Ever wondered how many people are
involved in creating your favourite resources?

When we set about creating a new resource, one of the most important
inputs we seek is from the teachers and pupils who will use it. We want to
know we’ve got it right so we trial our programmes with real teachers, in real
classrooms, with real pupils. We ask children what they think of the characters
and stories and we ask teachers for their feedback to inform our development
process. That way, when we finally launch our resources, we know they’re
exactly what teachers and pupils want.
When we created Bug Club, we trialled it with twelve schools,
36 teachers and 360 pupils. Here’s the story from just one of those
schools, Bangor Central Integrated Primary School in Northern Ireland.
Trialling Bug Club with Bangor
Central Integrated Primary School
Wendy Jenkins, the Literacy Coordinator and Head of Foundation and Key
Stage 1 at Bangor Integrated Primary School, Northern Ireland, took part in
the trialling of Bug Club books and software as they were being developed.
She involved all of the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 teachers and children
in the trialling, and the team at Pearson really enjoyed working with them
all. The feedback the children gave us was invaluable in helping us to create
exciting, engaging books that are pitched at just the right level.
About the School
Situated in the centre of the coastal town of Bangor in Northern Ireland,
Bangor Central Integrated Primary School is one of 41 integrated primary
schools in Northern Ireland. The school offers a teaching and learning
environment where all traditions and cultures are welcomed, respected
and nurtured together. It is a large school with 578 children aged between
4 and 11. There are 3 classes per year group and the school draws
children from a very wide catchment area.

Wendy has become one of Bug Club’s most enthusiastic advocates.
“The children have loved trialling the books,” she says. “They loved
the diversity of characters they came across in Bug Club. Instead of
seeing the same characters in every book, they read about lots of
different characters. This led them to use much richer language when
they were talking about the books.”
The teachers at Bangor usually find that getting children hooked on books is a real
challenge. “They are so used to TV, DVDs and everything else, that getting them interested
in reading is really hard. But Bug Club had children laughing, engaged and begging for more!”
Literacy
At Bangor, the Foundation Stage teachers assess all the children for reading readiness when
they start school. Some of the children are not used to handling books, so Wendy finds the
lilac level wordless books in Bug Club really useful for them. A particular favourite was the
Trucktown series – the boys loved the trucks and the girls loved the fact that there was a
girl truck just for them!

Creating a buzz about reading
When Sharon Heasely, a teacher at the school, read Chase in New York with her pupils,
she was thrilled. “The children really enjoyed the book and I was so impressed, it was great!
The illustrations were exciting and informative. They stimulated a lot of discussion about an
aeroplane journey, the city of New York, landmarks of New York and visits to the zoo. It
was a really interesting and very clever story told in just a few pages. Completely suitable for
this level. I would thoroughly enjoy using this book as a story book with my children.”
Turning boys into book worms
Like many Literacy Co-ordinators, Wendy is faced with the tricky issue of
how to turn boys into enthusiastic readers, but she feels she has found the
answer with Bug Club. She told us about a little boy who read one of Bug
Club’s Jay and Sniffer books, The Missing Masks. The boy began the trialling
process by saying that he was bored. But once he started to read, he really
connected with the story, wanted to read it and laughed at the pictures.
Later, Wendy overheard him animatedly retelling the story and describing
the pictures to some other children who had not been involved in the
trialling process. His final comment was “It’s really funny!”
Helping parents join the Club
Bangor, like many schools, has found that when children start school their
parents are very keen to read with them, but the older the children get, the
less they read with their parents and the more the school has to work with them.
So the school runs workshops with parents and encloses parent activity sheets with
the books they send home. During the trial, Wendy felt that the parent notes on
the inside covers of Bug Club books would be really useful. She was also pleased
to hear that Bug Club’s online reading world offered parents extra support and resources
as well as enabling teachers to monitor how much children are really reading at home.
Teachers catch the Bug too
During the trial, we asked Wendy what she and the other teachers liked
most about Bug Club. She told us that she loved the diversity of books
and the great variety of genres in fiction, non-fiction and comics.
She was also really looking forward to using the eBooks on her
interactive whiteboard to model reading during shared reading.
