June is a bittersweet month, and it’s a time to focus on personal transformation and reinvention – giving birth to the person you want to be, your ideal you. Pay attention to your health this month – avoid overwork or over-activity. As always, be careful with your relationships – don’t take anything, especially communication, for granted. Cancer, your sense of self-reliance and independence is stronger this month. You can and should have things the way you like them – without riding roughshod over others. You need to be careful about taking verbal commitments too seriously – people don’t always really mean what they say. Finances are bittersweet this month. Success comes only through hard work, but it does come. Things will improve as the month progresses. Professor of Food Science at Penn State University, Luke LaBorde says “eating spicy food increases blood circulation and makes you sweat, so you’ll feel cooler as the sweat dries.” Dr. Oz explains that the capsaicin in hot peppers encourages your body to sweat more without raising your body temperature. Sleep on ice cold sheets. Chill your bed by folding sheets and pillowcases, placing them in plastic bags and sticking them in the freezer for a few hours, according to Mother Nature Network. Then make up the bed just before you turn in for the night. FLORIDA’S HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS SALES TAX HOLIDAY – COMING SOON! Florida hasn’t set the date for this year’s Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, but here’s a list of items that will be included in the holiday buying: • • • Spritz yourself. Keep a spray bottle in the refrigerator and when the going gets hot, give yourself a good squirt – as the water evaporates, it cools you. Start with your wrists and ankles and then move on to your arms and legs. • • Shuck your shoes. As the sweat on your feet evaporates, it cools the skin and the blood in your feet. Blood vessels then whisk that blood to other parts of the body so “you’re getting a greater sensation of coolness” says Donald R. Bohay, M.D. and a member of the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society. • • • • A portable self-powered light source selling for $20 or less A portable self-powered radio, two-way radio, or weather band radio selling for $50 or less A tarpaulin or other flexible waterproof sheeting selling for $50 or less A self-contained first-aid kit selling for $30 or less A ground anchor system or tie-down kit selling for $50 or less A gas or diesel fuel tank selling for $25 or less A package of AA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt, or 9-volt batteries, excluding automobile and boat batteries, selling for $30 or less A nonelectric food storage cooler selling for $30 or less A portable generator that is used to provide light or communications or preserve food in the event of a power outage selling for $750 or less ARE YOU GOING TO PIGEON FORGE? The Summer Solstice heralds the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and will occur on June 21 at 12:38 p.m. The timing of the Summer Solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator. The summer solstice is the day with the most hours of sunlight during the whole year. Here are some ways to celebrate summer: 1. Go fishing. 2. Cook outside. Have a big cook-out on the solstice. 3. Listen to songbirds: We love our feathered friends. Attract birds to your garden with a bird feeder. 4. Let the light in! With all this extra daylight, hang a sun catcher in your window or on your porch. FATHER'S DAY HISTORY The idea for Father’s Day came to Mrs. John Dodd as she sat listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Her father had raised his children alone on his Washington farm after his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. Mrs. Dodd proposed to the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA that they celebrate a "father's day" on June 5, her father's birthday. The idea received strong support, but the ministers of Spokane asked that the day be changed to give them time to prepare sermons on the subject of fathers. The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington, and soon other towns had their own celebrations. Father's Day did not become a permanent national holiday until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring that it be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June. THOUGHTS ABOUT FATHERS My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, "You're tearing up the grass." "We're not raising grass," Dad would reply. "We're raising boys." Harmon Killebrew I don't care how poor a man is; if he has family, he's rich. M*A*S*H, Colonel Potter It is easier for a father to have children than for children to have a real father. Pope John XXIII Flag Day, always celebrated on June 14, is a day for and showing respect for our flag, its designers and makers. Our flag is represents our independence and our unity as a nation and has a proud and glorious history. It is at the lead of every battle fought by Americans. Many people have died protecting it. It even stands proudly on the surface of the moon. Flag Etiquette. The American flag represents our nation and the many people who gave their lives for our country and our flag. Here are the basics on displaying the American flag: • The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset. • The flag should not be flown at night without a light on it. • The flag should not be flown in the rain or inclement weather. • After a tragedy or death, the flag is flown at half-staff for 30 days. It's called "half-staff" on land ,and "half-mast" on a ship. • When flown vertically on a pole, the stars and blue field , or "union", is at the top and at the end of the pole (away from your house). • Never let your flag touch the ground, never...period. • Fold your flag when storing. Don't just stuff it in a drawer or box. . Famous Flag People: Betsy Ross: a seamstress who made clothes for George Washington. In June, 1776, Washington approached her to make the country's first flag and the rest is history. Francis Scott Key: inspired by the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Key penned the lyrics to our national anthem as he witnessed British rockets whizzing in the air while our American Flag flew in the breeze Did you Know? If you like to study flags, then you are a Vexillologist! June is National Rose Month. Roses have a long and colorful history. They have been symbols of love, beauty, war and politics. On November 20, 1986 President Ronald Reagan signed a resolution making the rose the national floral emblem at a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden. Facts about Roses ∗ A fossilized rose, which was 35 million years old, was found in Florissant, Colorado. ∗ Columbus’ crew picked a rose branch out of the ocean on October 11, 1492. This signaled the presence of land. The very next day, Columbus discovered America. ∗ Rose hips contain more Vitamin C than any other fruit or vegetable. ∗ Mythology says that roses grew thorns when Cupid accidentally shot an arrow into a rose garden. ∗ The oldest rose in the world has flourished for over 1,000 years on the wall of Hildeshiem Cathedral in Germany. June is National Dairy Month From calcium to potassium, dairy products like milk contain nine essential nutrients which may help to better manage your weight, reduce your risk for high blood pressure, osteoporosis and certain cancers. Neighborhood Watch is an organization made up of citizens who are concerned about their neighborhood and the betterment of their community. It is a means of bringing the community and police together in a cooperative effort to solve the problem of crime. Citizens are encouraged to call the police when they observe suspicious activity and to identify themselves and furnish the police with whatever information is available to them. The exchange of information between citizens and police is a vital link in achieving the desired effectiveness of crime prevention. Winward Lakes has an active Neighborhood Watch program and its success will depend on the continued participation of the citizens and their working with the police to tackle problems.
