Wanderlust
by Leigh Ross
Our last great meeting was held at
the lovely home of June and Paul Lange.
An enormous spread of nutritional
appetizers and carefully prepared dishes
with selected beverages were had.
Our trips for 2015 were selected. They
will be Mammoth Mt. in January 2015,
dates to be determined, Breckenridge
Colorado, January 28th to February 7th
and Telluride Colorado, March 8th to the
15th. The trip chairman are in place, ready
to champion another exciting adventure,
which this club excels in each and every
year. A new state of officers were installed
and are anxious to carry on the traditions
and energy of this great club.
The front cover has the very happy
skiers that flew to Deer Valley for a week,
staying at the Silver Baron. Another real
success story for our adventuresome,
willing to travel skiers. Rumor has it and
waiting for confirmation (which I’m sure
will arrive shortly) that the Wanderlust
Ski Club is the top Ski Club in the
Western United States!

Huntington Harbour Yacht Club
by Vice Commodore Kimberley
HHYC Flag Officers in Summer Dress, fresh off an opening day.
Hello Huntington Harbour. It is
your HHYC Vice Commodore here. As
always, I hope this finds you well. As I sit
here writing to you I believe I saw ToTo
and the wicked witch of the East fly by.
Yes we are in the midst of some amazing
winds. I know a few of our members have
lost their dinghies, solar panels, tarps,
etc., to the wind. I hope you are holding
on to your belongings.
I think as I was writing to you last
edition we were just getting started on
the opening day circuit (aka the deviled
egg circuit). The Flag Officers at HHYC
have been treated royally at many other
clubs around Orange and LA County and
experienced some unique and flavorful
deviled eggs. Steeped in yachting and
often military tradition the ceremonies
are something to behold. It is an honor
to attend.
Speaking of opening days, the HHYC
Opening Day went off beautifully. There
are too many people to thank but Junior
Staff Commodore Bill McCormick and
his wife Ann are to be complimented for
hosting such a great day for our members,
visiting dignitaries and yacht clubs. As
always a great thanks to our Commodore
Mim Strickler
The Most Highly
Regarded Travel Agent
Rear Commodore Larry Madoski and wife Michele, Vice Commodore
Kimberley Harrison, Commodore Phil Ventura, Fleet Captain John Schmidt.
Phil Ventura and our staff for providing
an amazing spread of tasty treats.
Our first cruise is mid May to
Avalon. While all the cruises are amazing,
this is one of our favorite cruises with an
exquisite dinner at the Catalina Island
Yacht Club and a dinghy parade/friendly
competition with Seagate Yacht Club.
Also coming up soon is our annual
boat show, which we have combined with
our annual open house on May 31st and
June 1st. This gives us a chance to show
case some of the boats for sale here in
the harbour and a chance to show off
our beautiful club and all that it has to
offer, both on and off the water. We hope
that you will all come and join us. By
the reading of this, it will have past but
we will be distributing flyers around the
harbour to let you know. We do have a
lovely brunch every Sunday where we
welcome the public to join us. If you
cannot make the open house you are
welcome any Sunday and I assure you,
you will not be disappointed by the food,
the company or the atmosphere ($15
brunch & $5 bottomless mimosas).
Our junior sailing school will be
starting in June so if you have kids or

grandkids that might be interested, even
a neighbor, please give us a call to see
about enrolment. You can call the Club
at 562-592-2186 or contact our Fleet
Captain John Schmidt at 714-334-1962.
This really is a wonderful opportunity to
introduce kids to the water and a great
Summer program. Our program director
Kimberly McCune is also working on an
adult program if there is enough interest.
Stay tuned for that.
With respect to Flag, we would like
to welcome John Schmidt. At the last
edition we were just in the process of
installing a new Fleet Captain and John
graciously stepped up. He has a sailing
and motor background and is a great
addition to the team.
On to regular Club updates: we are
thriving with membership, a lot of great
events are planned, but in addition to
those great events we have bridge on
Mondays, Martini Mondays (where there
are hand crafted martini’s with specialty
pricing), a full menu every night, happy
hour every day, $1 Taco Tuesdays, Pasta
Thursdays, Bar Night Fridays (with live
music), pool tournaments, movie nights
and of course our brunch on Sundays. I
have heard rumor of Weeny Wednesdays
(our Rear Commodore Larry Madoski
will be providing details of that soon).
In short, we have a lot of fun at the
Huntington Harbour Yacht Club. I
would love it if you would join us one
night as my guest so I can introduce you
to my family. A family who is proud of
the Harbour and all it has to offer. If you
have any questions about HHYC feel free
to contact me at 949-309-8346.
I hope to see you soon. Until then,
calm waters and safe sailing.
FINS
by Barbara Devlin & Pearl Holmes
Four organizers of the Bingo party: Gloria Sliney, June Ascolesi, Pearl Holmes,
Mary Johnston.
FINS Daytime Gourmet held
their annual Springtime Luncheon in
April at the home of Pearl Holmes with
Mary Berge as Co-hostess. The menu
consisted of unusual Antipasti Bites
made from pieces of salami pressed into
12 cup muffin pans and rolled up pieces
of aluminum foil rolled into balls and
pushed into the muffin cups to secure the
salami and then baked for 15 minutes in a
400 degree oven. A mixture of artichoke
hearts, button mushrooms, large ripe
olives, tomato sauce, white wine vinegar
and water-packed tuna was marinated for
twenty four hours and then placed into
the cooked salami. Mary prepared this
Italian recipe in advance and brought it
to the meeting. It was one of the most
unusual appetizers we have ever eaten
and was delicious! Following the cocktail
hour the main menu was prepared by
the cooks of the day. Barbara Devlin
prepared a wonderful Baby Mixed Green
Salad with Apple-Pear, Pecans, Feta and
dried cranberries while Mary Johnston
and Betty McCarthy prepared the main
entrée of Prosciutto-stuffed Chicken
Breasts with Mushroom Sauce. June
Ascolesi spent all morning coring whole
tomatoes to make Baked Tomatoes Filled
with Corn-Souffle (which was delicious
while Pearl made Basmati Rice Pilaf.
Mary Berge also prepared our dessert of
Raspberry-Chocolate Tarts which had to
be made in advance. Also enjoying the
luncheon were Gloria Beckstrom and Shel
Grossman.
The Social in April was a Bingo
and Pizza Party held at the social hall
at Rancho Del Ray Park. Twenty-two
members attended including Wynne
Hayes. It was so good seeing Wynne
FINS Supper Club at Marge & Tom Mitchell’s, from L: June Ascolesi, Bob
Beckstrom, Dottie Wood.
Hayes doing very well after her fall. After
enjoying some appetizers and cocktails
members all sat down for delicious Pizza
from our local N.Y. Style Pizza store
in our mall. After dinner six games of
Bingo were played. Winners were Phyllis
Ehrlich, Tom Mitchell, Bill Collins,
Gloria Beckstrom and Wynne Hayes
caregivers. Chairpersons of the Bingo
Party were Pearl Holmes, Gloria Sliney,
June Ascolesi and Mary Johnston
A New Orleans Supper Club was held
at the home of Tom and Marge Mitchell in
March where Tom Mitchell prepared his
Special SHRIMP GUMBO for members.
Tom Mitchell is one of our great men
cooks in FINS. Members helped with the
rest of the dinner which consisted of Hot
Crab Dip, Assorted Cheese and Crackers,
Spinach Salad, White Rice, Sourdough
Bread and for dessert Grasshopper Pie in
honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Seen enjoying
the evening were Carol Gallagher,
Rita and Bill Collins, Gloria and Bob
Beckstrom, Barbara and Ted Devlin, June
Ascolesi, and Pearl Holmes.

Casino Road Trip 2014
An enjoyable time was had by all
who attended the bus trip to Harrah’s
Resort. On board the bus, the fun started
with mimosas, Bloody Marys and mini
muffins served by Cindy Allen, Sheila
Osborn and Rob Allen. Jeff Ricketts and
Diane Reeve got the gambling going with
5 rousing games of Bingo. Chris Morris,
Maryann Boryszewski, Sue Westover,
Sheila Osborn, Margaret Humphreys and
Rich Maier were the big winners.
Before we knew it, we were at
Harrah’s! We were on our own until the
Cocktail Party. Diane Kaplan and others
tried their luck at the slot machines and
gaming tables.
The Cocktail Party in the Bordeaux
Room was pleasant, with people also
enjoying the outdoor balcony. The room
was gorgeous, we had our own bar, dance
floor, buffet area, cocktail and dining
tables. We also had our own slot machines
where we had our exciting Seagate Yacht
Club Slot Tournament! Afterwards, we
had a wonderful Island Style Buffet. We
had 3 delicious entrée choices, starters,
vegetables, and a great desert selection.
No one went hungry. We had a terrific
food and bar staff, who catered to our
needs. The winners of the Tournament
were announced with prizes going to 5th
place (Jean Clark), fourth place (Diane
Kaplan), third place (Janet Littlejohn),
second place (Sheila Osborn), and the
grand prize to Judie Hagin. We also
celebrated March and April Birthdays
and Anniversaries and no one left empty
handed, as everyone got a Harrah’s chip
to take with them. After the dinner, some
people stayed to dance to great music such
as “YMCA” and “Staying Alive”, others
gambled, and walked around the grounds.
Monday was a Free Day and the
weather was perfect. Most of us slept in as
we were able to get late check out for our
rooms and ate a nice breakfast at the Cafe.
Our group got the use of two cabanas
with TVs by the Pools, Lazy River and
Jacuzzis so we could watch the basketball
games and other sporting events. Others
tried their luck in the Casino. At 3 PM,
we boarded the bus for home. All in all,
it was great fun with a wonderful group
of people!
Seagate Yacht Club Opening Day 2014

God came through and blessed us with
a wonderful day even though we had
gale force winds. Our captains showed
amazing skill and exceptional seamanship
to navigate in those conditions. Thank
you all captains! Commodore Josef
Davydovits and Kim accompanied by
the flag officers and their wives followed
the Harbor Patrol on Robin and Jean
Clark’s the fantastic “Fintastic”. We had
15 boats in our parade. The Flag Officers
performed the traditional salute to
each of the boats in the parade and the
cannon fire was exceptional. Afterward
the celebrants returned to the clubhouse
for opening Day ceremonies and our
traditional dinner.
This year we were pleased to have
the Boy Scout troop 1226 as our Color
Guard. We would also like to thank
Chicago Fire Fighter Adam Brand for
leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance
and Josef’s daughter and granddaughter
Heather and Kayde Brand led us in the
Star Spangle Banner. We were honored
to have Mayor Matthew Harper of
Huntington Beach as a guest. We had
members of HHYC, American Legion
YC, SCYA and Lake Gregory YC joined
us along with the US Coast Guard
Auxiliary. We also presented the official
burgee to our newest members, Anthony
and Michelle Salcido and Marshall Wise.
Once the formalities were over our
126 members and guests enjoyed another
wonderful catered dinner of Prime Rib
and Turkey with all the trimmings by
Teak Catering. As always, Nina worked
her magic and her staff did a wonderful
job.
This day would not have been
successful without a lot of very special
people. A special thanks to Bonnie &
Jeff Specht for organizing and hosting
the event. Thanks to Mark Monroe for
organizing the parade and providing
everyone with a ride. We want to thank
everyone who helped set-up and clean-up:
Gil and Chris Morris, Bob McCormick,
Joseph and Kim Davydovits, Jan Nagele,
Cindy Allen, and Linda Axel. Many
thanks to Rod & Suzanne Antiblan for
the special effects provided (CANNON
FIRE). As always, Rob Allen and Cindy for
making sure all the vessels were refreshed
and the bar was well fortified. Last but
not least, Les Kelly, for the magnificent
photography and Tom Worden posting
them for all to see on our website.
It has been declared that the harbor is

Grand Marshal Event
What a fun night! HHPC members
converged at the Huntington Harbour
Yacht Club for a night of dining, dancing,
and to find out who will lead the boat
parade this December. It’s going to be
Sharie Sneddon! Sneddon is most excited
at being the newest grand marshal. Our
2013 grand marshal, Bill Wheeler, was
there to congratulate her. She’s announced
the theme, “Music in Paradise”. This will

L to R: Sharie Sneddon, Bill Wheeler. Sharie is the 2014 Boat Parade Grand
Marshal, Bill led the parade in 2013
creative decorating for boats, and homes
during the holiday season. Her goal is to
have 70 boats participate in the parade.
Yes, the summer is just upon us, but
it’s not too early to think about your
decorations...and entering your boat,
and home in our annual parade, and
decorating contest.
Kudos to Lyn Senske, Arden
Dombrowski,
Katie
Goetzinger,
Charmaine Rood, Patti Kenmore,
and Gigi Ashbeck, the hard working
committee, with help from additional
HHPC volunteers.
“Music Around the World” was
the event theme. Mim Strickler took
first prize honors for best dressed in
her flowing caftan, and exotic jewelry.
She won a $50 gift certificate to World
Market. Congratulations, Mim!
Attic Treasures
The parking lot at the Huntington
Harbour Mall was filled with artwork,
clothing, accessories, electronics, books,
holiday decor and much, much more.
Marlene Nielsen and Kim Willingham
put together an incredible Attic Treasures
event that drew people from far and near.
Dozens of HHPC volunteers helped out
sorting merchandise in the office, being
there to answer questions, and everyone
had a fun, fun time. There was even a
bake sale! Chairmen Lolly McHardy and
Kim Weddon were also on hand every
step of the way.
One of our Huntington Harbour
neighbors, K.C. Boelsoms, volunteered
to help sort and price merchandise. She
had such a good time she’s now joined our
group. Welcome K.C.!
Office “star” Madeline Fields made
sure everything was organized, and was
10
a never ending cheerleader. We raised
$5,200 dollars to help fund our music
programs. Incredible!
Junior’s Fashion Show
HHPC members were once again
back at the Huntington Harbour Yacht
Club as the HHPC juniors, our youngest
volunteers, walked the runway in chic
styles from Cason Couture. The theme
was “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.
Robin Silver, and Joyce Zimmerman
Ochs were delighted with this fun day.
Silent and live auction, luncheon, and
the runway show all added up to a most
successful venture. Read more about it
in the separate Junior’s article in this
Harbour Light Magazine.
Summer
We’ve just held our installation for
2014-2015. You’ll read all about it in the

Karen.
Summer is a time for rest and
relaxation for Huntington Harbour
Philharmonic Committee members.
Well, mostly. Some of our members
continue to work behind the scenes on
the boat parade, and Cruise of Lights. We
go back full steam ahead in September.
This year, we’d love to have you join
us. The HHPC is comprised of five
groups: Admiralty, Sandpiper, Marina/
Windjammer, Islander, and Trinidad.
We meet monthly, and work tirelessly to
raise funds for more than 250,000 school
children from kindergarten through 12th
grade-ensuring their music programs
continue to thrive.
For information, visit cruiseoflights.
org or call us at 714-840-7542.
HHPC: Trinidad Group
by Mike Novak
Trinidad Group members at our Installation Event held at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.
The Trinidad Group made the
transition to 2014 with our Installation
Event. We had a wonderful Luncheon
at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club
arranged by Linda Axel. Our incoming
President, Ellen Martin, took the gavel
from Pam Myres and immediately ordered
more champagne! She announced that
2014 would be the “Year of the Party.”
Outgoing Board Members were presented
orchids while new members were given a
personally designed hand collected shell
with a miniature tillandsia air plant.
We kicked off this new year with
yours truly as Publicity Chairman. I was
really pushing for Recording Secretary,
but incoming President Ellen Martin said
that “I did not have the legs for it.”
Our first event of the years was a
Cinco De Mayo Party held at the beautiful
Huntington Harbour Village Club House
and hosted by Deborah Fairon. It was me
again at the bar cooking up some potent
Sangria and Margaritas. The function was
also attended by several members from
other groups which made it extra special.
Good food, good friendships, and a happy
60th birthday to Mike Meyers.
We ended last year with 6 new
members, so it is nice to know that we
are still growing and attracting active
membership, great job Linda Axel!
With our new Grand Marshal in
place it was also time to start to think
about Cruise of Lights. So Lolly McHardy
could be seen with a group of folks talking
about ways to continue to energize The
Cruise and new, fun ways to raise money
for HHPC. It is always fun to talk about
The Cruise, especially with some Sangria
in your hand.
Sheree Novak, Party Chairman,
started the year off early with a ladies’
day at Glen Ivey. There were 12 ladies in
their bathing suits (picture intentionally
left out) drinking, talking, lounging
and putting mud all over themselves to
celebrate Ellen Martin’s birthday. Sheree
is all excited and telling everyone about
the upcoming parties which all sound
like fun. A sample is the Toga Party
(underwear optional), which will be a real
Swinging Affair.
Lastly, we recognize one of our
longtime members, Jan Mc Knew, who
is receiving her “25 Year Pin” for service
to HHPC. Jan and her Grand Marshal
Husband, Tom, have been great friends
and active members of several groups in
the harbour. Congratulate Jan when you
see her!

HHPC: Juniors
by Eva Kilgore
Audience loved the juniors fashion show.
The HHPC Juniors had a wonderful
year. Under the expert guidance of Robin
Silver, and help from Joyce Zimmerman
Ochs, this group of teens helped out in
our community in so many ways.
They assisted with the boat parade,
Cruise of Lights, made quilts for Health
Bridge Children’s Hospital, and so much
more. They helped with a food drive for
Project Self-Sufficiency, served meals at
Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, and were
docents at the Philharmonic Society of
Orange County’s House of Design. And
they put on an amazing fashion show at
the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club.
The theme was “Breakfast at
Tiffany’s”, and decor was gorgeous blue
and white. Kelly Cason and Cason
Couture provided the incredible fashions
for the girls. Hurley Irvine supplied the
boys with up-to-the-minute surfwear.
The HHPC juniors rocked the runway.
There was a live and silent auction.
Dawn Hernandez made the beautiful
baskets. Ellen Martin, Sharon Larson,
and Madeline Fields were there to attend
to many details. Diana Wood supplied
the opportunity prizes. Great Dane
Baking Company made everyone happy
with their yummy desserts.
Salon Ambiance made sure each and
every junior was runway-perfect. Shirley
from the Huntington Harbour Yacht
Club didn’t stop moving until every detail
was in place.
The Sandoval Family, Admiralty
HHPC, Islander HHPC, Kevin and
Judith Ivey, Cristi Ulrich with the Smith
Group. Ross Family Foundation, and so
many more generous donors helped ensure
the success of this day. Kelsey Silver and
Amanda Zimmerman went the extra mile
with their planning and leadership to
make the fashion show possible.
Congratulations to seniors Jeremy
Jorgensen, Kelsey Silver, and Amanda
Zimmerman and to all of the Juniors:
Natalie DeHeras, Jack Delulio, Cole
Gilbertson, Jenny Jorgensen, Elyse
Manzo, Mycayla O’ Bryan, Madison
Sandoval, Hannah Silver, Dina Simon,
Matthew Stephen, Andrew Wakamoto,
and Matthew Zimmerman.
Bravo! The Huntington Harbour
Philharmonic Juniors will take a few
months off...but if you have a teen from
14 to 18, you can sign up now for your
child or grandchild to be a part of the
juniors. Service points, fun, friendship,
and the spirit of volunteerism add up to a
wonderful experience for our local teens.
Call Robin Silver at 714-448-6275
and we will get all the information to you.
Hope to see your child in September!
HHPC: Admiralty
by Mim Strickler
Admiralty had a terrific finale to
the year. The Last meetings were held
at Mike Nielsen’s, Alice Zamboni’s, and
the Installation at Sherman Gardens. At
the latter our Admiralty President Marie
Edwards was assisted by her husband
Andy in thanking her old board, and
welcoming the new board members.
A special treat was live music by
Graham Hoad for our luncheon. An
enthusiastic group of Admiralty members
also attended the HHPC Juniors annual
fashion show and reported a great time
was had by all!
Front: Barbara Howland, Pres. Marie Edwards, Angela Hartfelder–Back: Charmaine Rood, Patti
Kenmore, Madeline Campbell, mike Nielsen, Bett Walton, Benita Jacobs, Jane Griley.

HHPC: Islanders
by Eva Kilgore
L to R: Marlene Nielsen and Kim Willingham chaired the highly successful Attic Treasures for HHPC.
What an wonderful year we’ve had!
President Janet French led the Islanders
in an expert way, with class and humor.
Good news, she’s agreed to do it again!
She and husband Larry opened their
beautiful home all year for meetings,
gatherings, and parties. Leader, and
hostess extraordinaire. We’re fortunate.
We held our installation at
Sebastiani’s, and everyone cheered to a
collective job well done. The grand marshal
event saw many Islanders gathering for a
fun night, filled with toasting, dancing,
and super conversation.
Our own Islander, Sharie Sneddon,
was named grand marshal for 2014. A
big job, indeed. She’ll be on the grand
marshal boat, waving at everyone!
Islander Kim Weddon, co-chair
of HHPC this year, is all smiles at all
the effort Islanders put into everything
they do. Congratulations to Arden
Dombrowski for attending to many
details for the gm event. Susan Qaqundah
did much work, as well.
Attic Treasures was a big success due
to the efforts of Marlene Nielsen and Kim
Willingham. They sorted through several
thousand items from books to holiday
decorations. From clothing to handbags,
They bagged, and hung, and priced, and
put blood, sweat and a few tears into
making sure this event went smoothly.
Marlene and Kim loaded and unloaded
merchandise. They arrived before the
sun was up, and stayed until the sun
went down. So many additional Islanders
helped out. Thanks to all.
Their efforts paid off. We raised
$5,200 for the music programs. In the
process, we had a neighborhood volunteer,
K.C. Boelsoms, come to help out. She had
such a good time she’s joined Islanders!
Members Robin Silver and Joyce
Zimmerman Ochs created the “Breakfast
at Tiffany’s” fashion show, where Juniors
strutted their stuff on the catwalk, and
even more money was raised! Joyce will
lead the juniors in September. Robin and
Joyce were so happy for the successful live
and silent auction, decor, and were most
pleased that everyone had a delightful
afternoon.
Our group works hard, and plays
hard. We are dedicated to our community,
our children, and grandchildren. We’re
ready to welcome you as a member, too,
call 714-840-7542 for more information.

Installation of our officers for 2014 - 2015.
Congratulations to all our officers
for 2014-2015! Joanne Fernbach did an
excellent job with the installation of all
our officers using a Broadway musical
theme!
Congratulations to our volunteers of
the year: Kathie Saveliev and Phil Ridout!
They both have done so much for our
group and we appreciate all their hard
work! We honored two of our members
who are celebrating 50 years with Marina/
Windjammers: Donna Shaffer and Diane
Janssen. They are founding members
of the original Marina group formed in
1964. Kudos to Donna and Diane for
all their loyalty and support as long time
members.
Joanne Fernbach was our gracious
host for the installation and lunch at
her beautiful home. We were treated to
a delicious lunch catered by the talented
Cordon Bleu chef, Allyson Fernbach
(chef-owner of “Ally’s Take”).
Several members of our group are
going to be serving as officers for 20142015 on the HHPC board: Karen Ridout
15
(Chairman), Cece Lorthioir (PR/Social
Media), Joanne Fernbach (Recording
Secretary), Barbara Sentell (House of
Design Liason). We certainly have a hard
working group of members!
A big thank you to all our members
who were able to help out with the Attic
Treasures Estate sale. Lisa Weller was our
coordinator. The day of the event our
worker bees included Lisa Weller, Carlone
Herman, Ellie Matthews, Charlene
Bauer, and Sloan Gallipeo. Kathy Bunch,
Pearl Holmes, and Margie Finlay brought
cookies and baked goods to the event.
We have many members helping out
at The House of Design on June 4th and
June 18th. Margie Finlay, Susie Sampson,
Lani Martin, Pearl Holmes, Ellie
Matthews, Barbara Sentell, Pat DeCou,
Charlene Bauer, Ruth Roe, and Lisa

Huntington Beach Sailing Foundation
by Tracy Lee
those who can add additional weeks or
enroll in the full summer session will be
able to more fully develop their sailing
skills.
• Intermediate sabot classes are focused
on sailors who have gained sufficient
experience to move beyond the
beginning level, are ready to develop
better sailing skills in stronger
afternoon winds, and want to improve
their competitive racing techniques.
Instruction is aimed at developing
the skills necessary to participate
successfully in outside regattas.
Tracy Lee is a 15-year old sophomore
student at Huntington Beach High School.
As Director of Capital Fundraising for the
HBSF, Tracy is currently heading up a
$150,000 capital fund raising campaign to
replace the Foundation’s entire fleet of sabots.
Enrollment for the 2014 youth
summer sailing program began in
February and several parents have already
signed-up their children for summer
classes, taking advantage of the new earlybird discount. Summer sailing classes for
children age 6 to 16 start Monday, June
23, 2014.
The Foundation offers two threeweek sessions and a full six-week summer
session:
• For children age 6-7, who are not quite
ready to be in a sabot on their own,
the Turtles program is designed to
introduce them to the basics of water
and boating safety and to make them
comfortable being out on the water.
Turtles will have opportunities to
sail with their instructors and more
experienced program sailors in one of
the school’s Cal 20 sail boats.
• Classes for novice or beginning sailors
age 8 and up are held in the mornings
when winds are lighter. New sailors will
learn about boat parts, knot tying, how
to rig a sabot, wind direction, points of
sail, and more. During the first week
of instruction, novice sailors will sail
solo and then expand their sailing skills
with each session. While one threeweek session will provide every child
with the rudimentary basics of sailing,
• The Foundation’s Introduction to
Racing class is designed for experienced
sailors who have progressed through
our program to the advanced level.
Students will learn advanced racing
rules and tricks to improve boat speed
in sabots and can learn to sail one of
the double-handed sailboats. This class
is especially helpful for our sailors who
wish to join high school/club teams
and want some experience in racing
both single-handed and double-handed
boats.
Classes are limited in size based upon
the availability of sabots. If you know a
child who might enjoy this experience of
a lifetime, please take this opportunity
to complete and submit an application
for this summer’s program. Dates, prices,
applications and other information can
be found on the Foundation’s website
at: www.sailhb.org or by calling the
Foundation at 562-592-2186.
Private adult sailing lessons are also
available in four-class packages. Adults
will learn to rig and sail with an instructor
in one of the Foundation’s CFJs or Cal 20
sail boats.
During the summer, the Huntington
Harbour Yacht Club holds a weekly
Burger Bash every Thursday night at 6:00
p.m. for the benefit of the sailing school.
The public is invited to come have a burger
and cheer on the young sailors as they
show off their progress by competing in
a friendly regatta. Please see the HHYC’s
article in this publication for more info
about the Yacht Club.

Huntington Harbour Garden Club
by Kitty Rozenstraten
Doreen Hill, Speaker Dane Shota, Elise Masseling.
Members of the HHGC love their
gardens and are devoted to learning
everything they can to make their gardens
more beautiful and more sustainable.
How do they manage to do that? Let me
count the ways. Well, maybe I will not
count the ways; in the interest of brevity, I
will highlight just three of the garden club
events of the last two months.
In March, members met at the home
of Sherry Bullock for brunch. Marie Coots,
Jeanne Nakamura, Barbara Simone and
Wendy Gingerich were co-hostesses and
put together a scrumptious buffet that
was enjoyed by all. Elise Masseling, our
devoted Second Vice President in charge
of programs, had lined up Kat Dorfman
who spoke on the topic of tube planters.
If you have never heard of tube planters,
you are not the only one. Ms Dorfman
explained that it is an innovative planting
system. She brought different sizes of
geo-textile tubes (think of giant black
stuffed sausages, 10-inches in diameter
and anywhere from 18-inches or more
in length) filled with a special premiumgrade planting mix. Holes are poked
into the tube and plants are inserted in
a pleasing pattern. This system lends
itself to planting succulents, but other
small potted plants can also be used. The
finished tubes can be placed anywhere,
can be formed into shapes, moved around
from one location to another, and can
even be hung any way and any place you
want. The result is beautiful plantings
in unexpected places. Members were
motivated to try this planting system to
beautify their gardens. The demonstration
tube planter was presented to Sherry
Bullock, our gracious host.
The April meeting took place at
the home of Mary Johnston. This time
Mary Johnston, Barbara Devlin, Barbara Simone, Elise Masseling, Kay
Sullivan.
Elise Masseling had invited Dane Shota,
a Certified Arborist and Soil Guru, to
do a presentation on how to maintain
healthy garden soil. All serious gardeners
know that beautiful gardens start with
healthy soil. Mr. Shota opened our eyes
to the hidden world of soil organisms.
For many years we have been told about
the importance of organisms in our soil –
think earthworms and insects. Mr. Shota
gave a crash course on micro-organisms
or microbes, invisible to the naked eye
but nonetheless major players in the soil
arena. Microbial action is the recycling
of dead organic matter into nutrients
needed for healthy plant growth. During
the microbial feeding frenzy the soil
ecology gets a make-over making the
soil less compacted. This facilitates
water uptake and nutrient absorption.
Increased microbial activity creates a
more ideal environment for our plants
without resorting to chemical means.
This is the foundation of Perma-Culture:
working with nature rather than against
it. Healthy soil equates to healthy plants
needing less water, fewer amendments,
and less digging and weeding.
The third noteworthy event was the
field trip to the 25th Annual Southern
California Spring Garden Show. There
was a garden for every taste: A First Lady
Rose Garden, a Self-Realization Garden,
a Spanish Mission Garden, a Southern
California Lifestyle Garden and many
more. If you have never been to the Spring
Garden Show, put a visit on your calendar
next year. Pearl Holmes, our faithful
photographer, took a picture of the group
in front of the Back-to-Natives display.
No visit to the Spring Garden show is
complete without buying plants and other
novel garden accessories. After a delicious
lunch it was back home to put on garden
gloves and hat and delve into the garden.
If after reading about these exciting
events you need more info on tube
planters, perma-culture or the next field
trip, give any of the HHGC members
a ring. Better yet, join us for our next
meeting. Guests are always welcome.

Assistance League® Huntington
Beach annual fundraiser Treasures By
The Sea was held Saturday April 5, 2014
at the Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa in
Huntington Beach. AL HB is a 100%
volunteer organization that raises funds
through the Thrift Shop and the annual
fundraiser to support philanthropic
programs that improve the quality of life
for adults and children in our community.
“‘The fundraiser is the chapters’
gift to the community and their support
is a gift of caring right back to us” said
President Doris Kennedy. In addition to
a Boutique shopping experience unlike no
other (bargain priced fashions, accessories
and jewelry), community businesses and
individuals donated tens of thousands
of dollars as cash, gift certificates and
services for silent auction baskets, a wine
pull and a live auction. The proceeds from
the fundraiser go back to our community
to fund the philanthropic programs.
Operation School Bell® is the AL
HB signature philanthropic program.
The program goal is to provide school
appropriate clothes to students from
families with a documented need and
attending schools in Huntington Beach,
Fountain Valley and Westminster. With
the help of a wonderful video Matt
Liffreing made at one of the Operation
School Bell nights at Target, Treasures by
the Sea ask for ‘Clothe A Child’ brought
in over $60,000.
This year, the fundraiser featured
Juliet Funt as the guest speaker at the
luncheon. Juliet is a nationally known
speaker who has high credentials of
her own and she is also the daughter of
Allen Funt of “Smile, You’re on Candid
Camera” fame. Juliet’s appearance was
sponsored by harbor resident, Claudia
Martinic, a very generous member of AL
HB, for which we are deeply grateful.

After spending the past few days
interviewing attorneys to replace Ron
Zumbrun and after much thought it was
decided to engage Roger J. Buffington.
Roger has a home on Coral Cay which is
on the main channel. He also represents
a neighbor who has also been sued by
the CSLC. Roger Buffington has been
collaborating with Ron Zumbrun for the
past two years and is current with all the
issues.
The plan now is to ask the court
to combine our two cases which should
strengthen our position, reduce costs
and reduce the court’s work load. With
this new united front Roger Buffington
feels we can get a trial date and hopefully
conclude everything by this summer.
Roger just like Zumbrun is quite
optimistic because we have the law on our
side.
So far we have collected about
$90,000 with half coming from me.
My guess we will need at least another
$100,000 before this is over. I can’t do
this on my own and need all of you to
help which some of you have done quite
generously. The problem is less than 50%
of main and mid channel and 1% of all
Huntington Harbour property owners
have done so. The easiest way to donate
is on our website which can be found at
www.hbpropertyowners.com.
According to the Appropriations
Committee their goal is to eventually
collect $5,000 to $8,000 annually from
waterfront property owners. That is why
we MUST WIN and need everyone to
donate to our legal fund

Cathy Thomas Cooks
by Cathy Thomas
Herbed Green Rice
Cookbooks form a tall, jagged pile
next to my bed. My bedroom looks more
like a culinary lending library than a place
to get some shut-eye. Night after night, I
gobble them up.
Some, I read like novels. The pages
stay pristine. No splashes, spills or
smudges soil the text. The recipes sound
glorious, but require long, grueling hours
in the kitchen. I feast on the color photos
and savor the imaginary flavors.
Some, I read like treasure maps.
Real meals spring from the pages. I
mark recipes-to-try with paper clips and
scribble notes in the margins. Eventually
grease spots and dark splatters will adorn
these pages, looking like a foodie Jackson
Pollock painting.
And I’m not alone in my cookbook
addiction. Food professionals from all
over the globe met for the annual Julia
Child Cookbook Awards in Chicago
in March. Attendees came from as far
away as Australia and Norway to attend
this formal, Academy Awards-style
presentation. The awards are under the
auspices of the International Association
of Culinary Professionals and are held
each year during their annual conference.
The cookbook that won in the
Chefs and Restaurants division was “The
A.O.C. Cookbook” by Los Angeles chef,
Suzanne Goin. I’ve cooked from this
amazing book and love everything that
I’ve prepared, especially the scrumptious
green rice. It’s cooked in a broth amped
with pureed fresh herbs. Bon appetit.

1/4 cup packed mint leaves
2 tablespoons minced chives
1/4 cup packed cilantro leaves
1 teaspoon hot sauce, see cook’s notes
1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon EV olive oil
3/4 cup finely diced fresh fennel bulb
3/4 cup finely diced red onion
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups raw white basmati rice
1 tablespoon butter
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
Cook’s notes:
The original recipe called for adding
1 crumbled chili arbol when sautéing the
vegetables. I prefer to use one teaspoon
of Frank’s RedHot sauce to the cooking
liquid in Step #2. I like it because it adds a
spark of acidity and (for me) has just-right
spicy heat. If you use Sriracha “rooster
sauce” use 1/2 teaspoon.
1. Toast fennel seeds in a small pan
over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes,
until they release their aroma and turn
light golden brown. Cool. Grind in
mortar and pestle, or place in small
zipper-style plastic bag and pound with
mallet or bottom of a pot until ground.
Bring chicken broth and water to a boil
in medium-large saucepan. Turn off heat.
2. Place parsley, mint, chives and
cilantro in blender. Add 1 cup of the hot
liquid and puree herbs at medium speed
(cautiously hold down lid of blender with
pot holder). Add remaining liquid and
puree at high speed for about 2 minutes,
stopping to wipe down sides and lid as
needed.
3. Rinse out pot and heat it over
high heat. Add oil, fennel, onion, toasted
ground fennel seeds and 1/2 teaspoon salt;
cook over medium-high heat for about
5 minutes, stirring often, until onion
and fennel are translucent. Add rice, 1
teaspoon salt and pinch of pepper; toss to
coat. Add herb broth and bring to boil.
Reduce heat to simmer. Add butter. Cover
and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until
tender and liquid is absorbed. Turn off
heat and leave rice covered for 5 minutes.
Fluff rice with fork. Taste and adjust
seasoning if needed.

Little Mermaid Guild of CHOC
by Fran Gitsham
L to R: Lynda Edwards, Sally Toth, Fran Gitsham, Suzy Skoczylas, Susan Dill, Judi Can Houten, Marilyn
Fetter, Ginny Bowman and Joyce Zaleski.
The Little Mermaid Guild’s First
Annual Garage Sale was held on April
12th and was successful beyond anyone’s
expectations. Among other things, monies
raised will be used to host Hannah’s
Dinners. On Thursday evenings, the third
floor at the Children’s Hospital of Orange
County loses its sterile hospital scent in
favor of a more familiar and comforting
smell - a home style dinner.
The third floor of the hospital is home
to the oncology unit, where children with
cancer and their families often endure
long stays. Quite often parents do not
think to feed themselves so, once a week,
dinners are delivered to them. The CHOC
guilds are among volunteers from Orange
County churches, the Orange Police
Department and other organizations
who donate their time and resources in
rotating duties every month. In memory
of Hannah, 1, who lost her battle with
Leukemia, Hannah’s Dinners are served
to up to fifty families each week.
Next up for the guild, which is
always looking for avenues to raise funds,
will be manning a booth on June 14th,
which is the Saturday of Father’s Day
Weekend, at Huntington Beach’s annual
Surf City Chili at the Beach event.
This fun filled event brings locals and
visitors alike to share in good food and
philanthropy. Besides great food tastings
from local HB restaurants, competition
chili and salsa tastings will be from 11am
to 4pm, or until chili and salsa run out.
The event takes place on Main Street
in downtown Huntington Beach and
features live music, roving entertainment
and children’s activities, such as rides and
games. In honor of Father’s Day, the event
will feature over sixty vendors displaying
products, activities and gifts for men such
as “Dad’s Toys” and the Harley Davidson
trike show.
From participating in numerous
local community events to live and silent
auctions to selling holiday cards designed
by CHOC patients, among many other
things, the Little Mermaid Guild puts
their hearts and souls into a very worthy
cause. If you are interested in joining to
help raise funds for Children’s Hospital of
Orange County, contact Judi Van Houten
at 714-401-4254. All warm hearts are
welcome.
Trinidad Ladies Club
by Jan McKnew
Trinidad Ladies Club held their
installation of officers at Seasons 52
Restaurant located in South Coast Plaza
on May 6, 2014.
Two long tables to seat 25 women
were set up in a private room. They were
decorated by Carrie Wexler. A beautiful
turquoise colored netting, sea shells and
plants were placed down the center of
tables, one plant for each of the Outgoing
Board members.
Gifts were presented to our
Co-Presidents, Carrie Wexler and Candy
Cloud, for a job well done!
Candy Cloud then introduced our
new President, Courtney Holm-Banaag,
who proceeded to introduce the new
officers and board, presenting each one
with a gift.
A delicious lunch was served. For a
starter, there was a Ripe Plum Tomato
flat bread. Then our ladies had a choice

yummy it was. Our guest speaker, Jorge
Cardenas, related how his experiences
as a child at Orangewood saved him
from a life of crime, jail and who knows

him with few good choices, but his
influences at Orangewood gave him

Ellen Halopoff will be fondly remembered by her Marina/Windjammer group (pictured), HHPC, PSOC,
and the community.
Between 1987 and 2013, if you joined
the Windjammer Group of HHPC, and
thought it was going to be a nice social
group, you got a big surprise. Ellen
Halopoff did not become President of the
group until 2009, but she gave everyone
some real direction and motivation when
it came to the mission of the Philharmonic
Society and what each Committee must
do to fulfill that mission.
In fact, in her mind everyone she
met was a potential member: from parent
chaperones and teachers at the youth
concerts to neighbors she met while
walking. Her contagious enthusiasm
and endless energy, combined with her
dedication to providing music education
for children spanned all levels, from
chairing the Youth Concerts Programs to
organizing ‘the troops’ (in our Group) into
27
a core of ushers for both the Disneyland
Band and Fifth Grade Concert programs.
And, to insure that even we members
received a touch of music education, she
arranged for the presentation of musical
programs at each monthly Marina/
Windjammer meeting. Occasionally we
were privileged to hear (and learn from)
professional musicians, but more often a
group from a local high school or middle
school brought their talents to us. A
music teacher by profession, she embraced
and nurtured music education into her
retirement days and volunteer hours.
Today, while we miss seeing her at
our meetings and at the youth program
venues, without a doubt we feel her
presence and her passion, her vivacity
and her vision. And with every music
program we present or participate in, we
are reminded of Ellen’s love and joy in
giving. She continues to inspire, not just
her HHPC friends, but everyone who was
privileged to work with her. She left us
such a rich legacy!
