In 1972, archery became a permanent part of the Olympic programme. There are 64 men and 64 women competing in the recurve division, for Individual and Team events in London. In the Ranking Round, the athletes shoot 72 arrows at a distance of 70 metres. In the Olympic Round (matches), the number 1 individual qualifier (seed) shoots against number 64, and so on… Individual matches are best of five sets of three arrows. The athletes shoot in alternate format and have 20 seconds per arrow. The first archer to six set points is the winner. If after five sets the scores are tied at 5-5, the match goes to sudden death, where both archers shoot one arrow each (alternately). The arrow closest to the centre wins Each nation that qualified 3 athletes of the same gender can also compete in the team competition. In the team matches, each team shoots 24 arrows — 4 ends of 6 arrows with cumulative scoring. They have only 2 minutes to shoot those 6 arrows. Each team member shoots 2 arrows per end, shooting only one arrow at a time. Teams alternate shooting after every 3 arrows. There will be 4 new Olympic champions: Men’s Individual, Women’s Individual, Men’s Team, and Women’s Team. The archery competition will take place at the famous Lord’s Cricket Ground. Paralympic Games London 2012 Paralympic Games, 29 August - 9 September (Archery : 30 August - 5 September) There are 136 para-archers competing — 88 men and 48 women — in London. The venue for archery will be the Royal Artillery Barracks. At the end of the four Stages, eight archers — the top seven, plus one wild card — in each category qualify for the World Cup Final. The top mixed teams in each division meet the host country’s mixed teams in the Final. Longines Prize for Precision The famous Swiss watch brand Longines is awarding prizes for the most precise archers in the year. Brady ELLISON (USA) and Justyna MOSPINEK (POL) won the award in the recurve division in 2010, whereas Rodger WILLET Jr. (USA) and Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA) were the compound winners in 2011. Prize Money will be awarded — over 200,000 USD ! The Archery World Cup Final 2006 took place at the ancient Mayapan Pyramids in Merida (MEX). The Archery World Cup Final 2007 took place at the magnificent Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai (UAE). The Archery World Cup Final 2008 took place in picturesque Lausanne (SUI), the Olympic Capital. The Archery World Cup Final 2009 took place on the historic canal of Nyhavn in Copenhagen (DEN). The Archery World Cup Final 2010 took place at East Princes Street Gardens in the heart of Scotland’s capital city Edinburgh (GBR). The Archery World Cup Final 2011 took place at the Kucuksu Pavilion in Istanbul (TUR), on the Asian banks of the Bosphorus Strait. Archery World Cup 2012 Archery World Cup 2011 7 The winner of the match is determined by the number of set points won, not the score of the arrows. The match winner is the first to reach 6 set points. The match will finish once the 6 set points is reached within the 5 sets. World Cup Competition Format About 300 archers participate in each World Cup Stage. Qualifications If the match is tied at 5-5 set points, a one-arrow ( only ! ) shoot-off will be used to break the tie. The archer whose arrow is closest to the centre ( if needed it will be measured ) gets 1 extra point and wins. Until the field of play of finals, the athletes usually shoot their arrows simultaneously and have 2 minutes to shoot 3 arrows. In final matches, athletes alternate to shoot each arrow and have 20 seconds per arrow. Here is an example of a recurve individual match At all stages, recurve archers shoot a 70m Round in qualifications, 12 ends of 6 arrows. The maximum number of points is 720. They follow with the Olympic Round. Firtst set At all stages, compound archers shoot a 50m Round in qualifications, 12 ends of 6 arrows. The maximum number of points is 720. They follow with the Compound Round. Second set Archers are ranked based on the number of points. The top 104 archers, 16 teams and 16 mixed teams per category from the qualifications are paired — the No. 1 qualifier against No. 16, etc. In the indivual match charts (104 archers), the top 8 are preseeded in 1/16 of eliminations (3rd round). Athlete A shoots Athlete B shoots 10, 10, 9 = 29 10, 9, 10 = 29 Both athlete A and B earn 1 set point. The score is tied at 1-1 Athlete A shoots Athlete B shoots 10, 10, 10 = 30 10, 5, 7 = 22 Athlete A earns the two points. He leads 3-1. Third set Athlete A shoots Athlete B shoots 10, 10, 8, = 28 10, 10, 10 = 30 Athlete B earns the two points. He tied the match at 3-3. Fourth set Athlete A shoots Athlete B shoots 10, 9, 8 = 27 10, 10, 10 = 30 Athlete B takes the lead 5-3 ! Individual Elimination Matches for Recurve : Set System, Olympic Round Firtst set Athlete A shoots Athlete B shoots 10, 10, 9 = 29 10, 10, 8 = 28 5 sets of 3 arrows per set. Athlete A earns the two points and ties the match at 5-5 ! One arrow shoot-off is required to break the tie ( to earn the extra set point ). The winner of each set — the athlete who gets the highest cumulative score with his 3 arrows — gets 2 set points. Shoot-Off If the set is tied each athlete gets 1 set point. On the match chart results, the score would be shown as : Athlete A : 5 (29, 30, 28, 27, 29 ; T10) / Athlete B : 6 ( 29, 22, 30, 30, 28; T10* ) *Closest to centre Archery World Cup 2011 Archery World Cup 2011 9 Mixed Teams (Recurve and Compound) This competition has the same format as for teams, however there are only two athletes per team competing — one man and one woman per country. Individual Elimination Matches for Compound : Compound Round The mixed team shoots a total of 4 ends, with each team member shooting 2 arrows per end for a total of 16 arrows (max score 160). Athletes shoot 5 ends of 3 arrows. Each team has 80 seconds to shoot 4 arrows. The winner has the most total points after 15 arrows –– the score of each arrow is cumulative. The team format applies for alternating arrows and order of shooting. If the match is tied, a one-arrow shoot-off will be used to break the tie. In the tiebreak, the archer whose arrow is closest to the centre wins. There are World Cup rankings for the two mixed team divisions (recurve and compound). The winners of each division play the host country’s teams at the World Cup Final. The World Cup Nation Ranking is determined by the results of all individuals, teams and mixed teams. Competition Format Competition Format 11 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Equipment Target Regular target Compound Recurve The target face at 70 metres is 122 cm in diameter.The target face is attached to the target butt. The target face has 10 concentric scoring rings. Each ring is 6.1 cm in width. Hence, the inside scoring ring (the 10 ring) is 12.2 cm in diameter. The outside scoring ring is worth 1 point and the inside ring is worth 10 points. There are five colours on the target — white for the two outside rings (1 and 2-point rings), then black (3 and 4), light blue (5 and 6), red (7 and 8), and gold (9 and 10). Should an arrow land on the line dividing two rings, it scores the higher score. Bows Two kinds of bows are used for the World Cup events : 5 6 7 8 9 10 6-ring target (For your information within the 10 ring is a smaller, lighter circle called the X10. It is only used as tie-breaker during qualifications on for world records. The very centre of the target is called the bull’s eye.) For the 50 m Round and the Compound Round, athletes shoot at a target face with 6 rings (scores of 10-5), 42 cm wide. The target is positioned so that its centre is 130 cm above ground give or take 5 cm. A wind flag is positioned above the centre of each butt. This flag is essential to archers because wind affects their aim. A windsock is also visible on the Field of Play. Equipment Recurve : the only type of bow allowed in Olympic competition — its limbs curve away from the archer. It is also called a Classic Bow. Compound : this bow has pulleys and cables to make the holding weight less than half of the draw weight. The bow is constructed with high-tech fibre. Modern risers (handles) are usually made of aluminium or carbon fibre, the limbs are laminated of fibreglass, carbon fibre and a wood or synthetic core. The string is a high-strength, low-stretch synthetic material. Other features on a bow include a stabiliser, a sight, upper and lower limbs, a handle riser, a grip, a nock point, an arrow rest, a plunger button and a clicker. Arrows Arrows are usually made of a combination of aluminium and carbon fibre. The arrowhead or point is the part of the arrow that sticks into the target. The nock is the end of the arrow that fits onto the bow string. The feathers on an arrow are called the fletching or fletch. Every arrow must be identified with an archer’s name or initials. Arrows can fly at more than 250 km/h. Equipment 13 World Archery University Championships World Archery Field Championships Competitors must be born between 1 January 1984 and 1 January 1994. Field archery is a different discipline from those featured in the Olympic Games or the World Cup. In the discipline of Field archery: Cordoba (ESP) – 4-7 July 2012 There are two divisions (Recurve and Compound). Medals are awarded for the individual, team and mixed team events. Archery has been on the programme of 4 Universiades as optional sports and all of these were successful participations with a growing number of participants. The first participation was Daegu (2003) followed by Izmir, Belgrade, and Shenzen. Archery is scheduled to be on the programme in Gwangju (2015). There have been in total 8 World University Championships since the first event in 1996 in France. The level of participation is very high. Several medallists from Olympics and World Championships have participated at University World Championships and Universiades: in recurve, Olympic champion Viktor RUBAN (UKR), two-time Olympic gold medallist IM Dong-Hyun (KOR), Olympic silver medallist Victor WUNDERLE (USA), three-time Olympic champion PARK Sung-Hyun (KOR), World Cup Final winner Justyna MOSPINEK (POL), World Indoor champion Berengere SCHUH (FRA); in compound, multiple world indoor and outdoor champion Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA), World Cup Final winner Sergio PAGNI (ITA), World Cup Final winner Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA), two-time world champion Albina LOGINOVA (RUS). Val d’Isere (FRA) – 14-19 August 2012 There are three divisions (Compound, Recurve and Barebow). Marked (known) and unmarked (unknown) distances, from 5 to 60 metres, are shot depending on the division. Uphill and downhill shots are required, often with varying positions for the feet. The arrow flight differs on a given distance because of the angle of the shot, which means that the archer must adapt constantly. The target faces have six scoring rings. Competitors shoot various rounds of courses with up to 24 targets. Individuals shoot 3 arrows per target. Only the best scores qualify for semifinals and finals matches. Teams are made up of one archer from each division. Each archer shoots one arrow per target. All FISU Archery Events have been granted World Ranking Status by World Archery (despite of the fact that eligibility is restricted to University students in a specific age group). At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, archery was in the top 10 of the 28 Olympic sports in average audience viewership. There were three days that archery was in the top 5 audiences of the day in China — total cumulative viewers for these three broadcasts on CCTV in China alone was 229 million ! Archery launched www.archery.tv on YouTube and reached 8 million videos viewed in February 2012. In 2011, archery started live streams. Seven founding nations were present : France, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Sweden, the United States and the former Czechoslovakia. The head office for WA is in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2005, Prof Dr Ugur ERDENER (TUR) was elected president. Dr ERDENER is also an IOC Member and the President of the National Olympic Committee in Turkey. According to its Constitution, WA’s main objective is “to promote and encourage archery throughout the world in conformity with the Olympic principles.” World Archery makes and interprets the Rules Book ; supervises the organization of World Championships and other international competitions ; and promotes archery through the media and sponsors. Archery was part of the Olympic Movement from 1900 – 1920 and has been permanently a part of Olympic Games since 1972, when the IOC returned the elegant sport of archery to the Olympic program. Women competed in the 1904 Olympics, making archery one of the first sports competitions to include women. In 1961, WA became the first International Sports Federation to elect a woman president. World Archery has held World Championships since 1931. Since 1991, WA has included eight disciplines. In 2006, WA started the Archery World Cup — staging intense competitions in spectacular places. In 2009, the forward-focused World Archery brand was launched to represent the sport of archery to both sports enthusiasts and the worldwide market beyond the archery family, promoting archery at every level with passion. In July 2011, a large majority of the Congress held in Turin, Italy, voted to change the name from FITA to World Archery Federation (WA).
