or me, the winter is normally spent tinkering on the
Porsche in the garage in anticipation of the RMR
driving season (which kicks off with Speed Fever V
on April 26-27, 2014). Driving the Porsche in winter
months is limited to some rare summer-like days or
perhaps the Eiskhana in Georgetown (now in its
48th year) to play on the ice.
However, for sports car racing as a spectator sport, the
beginning of the year brings on the end of football and
the start of a new season of racing with some of the most
exciting and iconic sports car racing of the year. Like me,
you may look forward to the start of the racing season and
the opportunity to get together and watch the races with
others in the RMR community. If you had the opportunity
to watch the 52nd running of the Rolex 24 hours of Daytona,
you witnessed the first race for the newly formed TUDOR
United Sports Car Championship series, which combines
the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and the American
Le Mans Series. Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) entered
two new 911 RSRs in its 2014 debut as a factory program in
the GT Le Mans class and took home an impressive 1st place
in the race by a margin of under 1 second over BMW after
24 hours of racing. Much better than watching the Denver
Broncos at the Super Bowl ... enough said.
Another season-starting race to watch in March is the
62nd running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours at Sebring, which
will take place on Saturday, March 15th, 2014. The 2014
Pirelli World Challenge series season starts on the Streets
of St. Petersburg, March 28-30, 2014. We’re still waiting to
hear what 3R and K-PAX racing have planned for their 2014
season now that Volvo is no longer sponsoring the team.
Perhaps (hopefully) we will see another Porsche team from
3R Racing and K-PAX for 2014.
If you are a follower of PCA Club Racing, then you know
2014 was kicked off with the 48 hours of Sebring race. Again,
several of our own region PCA Club Racers (Alan Benjamin,
Mike Hemingway, Andy Wilzoch, Mike McGrath and Bruce
McGrath) and National Club Racing Staff (Walt Fricke and
Vicki Earnshaw) escaped the Colorado winter and made the
trek this year, so be sure to ask them about the experience
when you see them.
Early in March we will be holding the annual Tech
Inspector Training meeting. By participating in the training
you can become a member of the team of RMR Tech
Inspectors who perform the tech inspections at area shops
prior to our Driver Education events. Even if you don’t
want to become a tech inspector, this is an opportunity to
learn more about the items that need to be checked and
considered when participating in a Driver Education event
or when performing your own maintenance and checks on
your Porsche. The training is being held at Prestige Imports
on Saturday, March 8, 2014 with coffee, juice, and bagels at
9:00 a.m. and the training starting at 9:30 a.m.
If you are not interested in tech inspection or track events
and simply want to get together with other Porsche-minded
friends, then head on out early to the Porsche Breakfast Club
meeting on March 8, 2014 at the Village Inn located just to
the north off I-25 at the intersection of S. Colorado Blvd. and
Mexico in Denver at 8 a.m. This group has been meeting on
the second Saturday of the month since March 3, 2008 with
an impromptu car show and breakfast.
I am excited about the RMR New Member Social we are
hosting on March 15, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Man
Cave – North in Westminster, Co. Although this is titled as
a “New Member Social,” it is intended for ALL members of
RMR. As I mentioned last month, this is going to be a tradeshow type of event where we will have committee members
and board members there to present information and answer
questions about PCA-RMR activities on both regional and
national levels.
We are planning to have information and demonstrations
by some of our HighGear advertisers, slide shows and videos
of RMR and PCA activities, and even a racing simulator to try
out. We are holding this event on a Saturday morning rather
than our typical Thursday night with the thought that many
of our members who are working and distant from the location
can make it on a Saturday early in the day. We encourage all
of our members to attend, join in the discussions, and meet
other members of the RMR Community.
I had the opportunity to get a sneak peak at the new PCA
website. The new website is scheduled to be operational in
the upcoming weeks (or by the time this issue of HighGear
is published). The website has been redesigned to improve
the functionality for members, non-members, and staff.
Members have the benefit to access information paid for by
becoming a PCA Member, such as full access to The Mart, the
Tech Q&A section, a Member Forum for reviewing threads,
creating new threads, and adding responses, plus there is a
Magazine tab where you can view Panorama on your tablet
or PC or do a search for an article in a past issue. One feature
of the new website is what is termed a responsive design.
This means it is suited for viewing on both a computer screen
and a mobile device. The screen layouts change based upon
the size of the window. Overall it looks like a well designed
update for PCA and the membership.
I encourage you to periodically review and update your
membership information on the PCA website in order to keep
up with RMR and PCA activities. This information is used
by RMR to send out email notifications and mailings such
as HighGear. Also sign up for the Porsche Club of America–
Rocky Mountain Region Facebook Group to see what others
in the RMR Community are up to and visit the RMR Website
to get the latest information about events.
I hope to see you this month at the New Member Social
or another of the many activities we have planned for you
this year.

eing new can be a little intimidating and
offsetting. New members to any organization
often are the quiet observers, the shy
wallflowers or even the timid non-participants.
Many times, these uninitiated guests will give
an outfit just one first impression—one chance—to prove
itself and determine in just a few minutes whether the
group welcomes others or treats strangers as unwelcome
invaders to their conglomerate of individual cliques.
I remember my first time attending an RMR event. I
was most certainly intimidated and really didn’t know
anyone. I felt like a chess piece in the middle of a checkers
game.
I managed to talk to a couple of people in hopes we had
some common ground. I wanted to talk to someone about
some fears I had about my new Boxster (IMS anyone?) and
I was also anxious to see what the club had planned for
upcoming events of the touring, rally, or autocross kind.
The first meeting I went to was a bit awkward and I left
early, feeling a little tepid to be quite honest. I knew it
would take time and extra effort to make some new friends
that happen to have a keyfob strikingly similar to mine.
The ice did finally break for me and after a couple more
events I had some faces I remembered and made a few
friends. Then I took over the position as Newsletter Editor
and the floodgates opened.
Now people come up to me with compliments (and
complaints), ideas, and concepts just as much as I approach
them looking for cars to feature, stories to hunt down or
victims to add to my “Take Five” column (see page 31). But
what I love most is welcoming and meeting new members
into our ever-growing posse of Porsche enthusiasts along
the Front Range. I implore all of you, dear readers, to do
the same.
Be that person who shatters the uncomfortable,
invisible barrier between the entrenched primary portion of
our delegation and the apprehensive newcomers. It doesn’t
matter if the type of Porsche you own doesn’t match theirs.
Invite them in, introduce them to those you know, guide
them to those that might be able to help them with their
concerns or can assist them in fueling their excitement in
getting less than half the usual miles out of their new Pirelli
P-Zeros by hooking them up with some hot laps somewhere.
I am super excited about the New Membership Social
being held by our friends at The Man Cave in Westminster
on Saturday, March 15th. The whole club is welcome to
attend and meet some of the fresh faces that joined RMRPCA over the past 12 months (over 150 new people join our
club each year). For any of our new members who may be
reading this right now, I really, truly hope you can find the
time to come to this social that is being specifically designed
with you in mind (the plan is to make this an annual event,
held every March). We will have a slew of presentations
and tables chock-full of information and useful takeaways.
Coffee and breakfast snacks will be readily available and a
variety of videos, slideshows and even a driving game will
be ready for your retinas. There will even be a demo on how
to best detail your vehicle and don’t forget to sign up for
your membership badge. I expect a few door prizes might
just be given away as well.
All of this, just for you, new friends. So come on out and
attend our New Membership Social! I think our HighGear
newsletter is pretty damn nice, but you didn’t join our club
just to receive this sexy periodical did you?

W
ow! Just look at all these new members!
It’s getting closer to spring and it’s time for
our NEW MEMBERS SOCIAL.
If you have not attended an RMR event
before or have not gotten to meet your Board
Members or Event Chairs, this is your chance.
If you have questions about getting involved in any of RMR’s
upcoming events (Driver Education, Club Racing, Autocross,
Rallies, Driving Tours, Coffee & Cars Impromptu Car Show,
Porsche Breakfast Club, or any of our social events), then this
is the time and place as the new membership social is all about
you. That’s right, YOU!
We will have the answers to your questions on a wide
range of topics. Vendors and Porsche repair specialists
will be on hand, and we will have detail and interior repair
demonstrations, and more. Food and drinks will be provided..
For all of you longstanding members, please feel free
to come and help us welcome and get to know our newest
members (remember when you didn’t know anyone?).
New members need our help to fit right in and be part of
all we have to offer, so please adopt a new member this month
(And, no, they aren’t to be used for spring car waxing).
As you can see below, we are really growing rapidly so
please let us know what type of events you would be most
interested in seeing our club put together by sending me an
email at [email protected]! Your feedback will
help our Board Members and Event Chairs plan future events
of all types.
Remember, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people”!
Welcome our newest members!

Last month’s Membership Social packs ‘em in!
by David Schmidt, Editor
Despite frigid temperatures, a throng of over
200 RMR members descended on Ferrari of
Denver for their 2nd Annual “Febtoberfest,”
which is specifically for Porsche owners and
included a smorgasbord of great door prizes.
The grand prize of the giveaways was a free
weekend with a new Maserati Ghibli offered
up by Ferrari of Denver. It was won by Alan
Thome (pictured at right with Mark Dismuke,
General Manager of Ferrari of Denver and kind
host for the evening).
Automotive painter extraordinaire Marc
Jones gave away a painting of a Porsche 959
edging past a Ferrari F40 which he scrambled
to get done in time for the event. The idea
for the painting came from RMR member
Gavin Yuill and then was won by a completely
random drawing by his wife, Amanda Yuill
(photo, below)!

As
the
saying
goes, “It’s not
just cars, it’s the people.”
This is certainly true for
six couples who became
acquainted during various
RMR and AMR events
several years ago. Warren
and Nancy Kercher,
Jerry and Judy Medina,
Ed and Gail Ryer, Bob
and Judy Sutherland,
Dennis Waite and Kris
Ashton, and Dave and
Diane Landes formed a
common bond as they all drove Boxsters and had a
love for tours.
Since most of the RMR/AMR tours are weekendonly events, and this group desired something longer,
it started organizing its own; note, both semi and full
retirement are great! Starting out with 3-4 day tours
throughout Colorado, the group gradually expanded
its tours in both time and distance by touring to Moab,
Taos and Santa Fe and soon the group started referring
to itself as the “Boxster Bunch.”
As time and experience developed, more adventuresome planning led to one-week tours, then to twoweek tours, and finally to tours three weeks in length.

Their destinations have
included the Yellowstone

Teton
National Parks, Grand
Canyon, Zion, Bryce
Canyon and Capitol Reef
National Parks, Carlsbad
Caverns National Park
and

New Mexico, Yosemite
and Redwood National

and
the
Columbia River Gorge,
and most recently the Glacier/Waterton National
Peace Park, Banff, Lake Louise and the mountains of
eastern British Columbia.
The good news here is that after many thousands
of miles traveled, we have only experienced two
problems, one flat tire and one dead battery, a
testimony to the reliability of these fun little cars.
Although small in size, they are very comfortable,
and one can pack an amazing amount of gear in their
two trunks as we have demonstrated by our extended
tours.
For our most recent tour, the Boxster Bunch fired
up its trusty steeds on August 17th for a trek north
for over 3500 miles and 15 days. The first major
destination was two nights at Lake McDonald
Lodge in Glacier National Park.
Our reservations were made in February,
2013 for our August visit. While in the
park we hiked trails, took a boat ride on
the lake, and enjoyed tremendous scenery
everywhere we looked. The highlight was
traversing the park from west to east over
“Going-to-the-Sun Road,” which covers 50
miles of glaciers, wildlife, and wildflowers.
This road is only open from June to early
September each year.
After finishing the road drive and
lunching in St. Mary’s, Montana, we headed
north to Canada and the Waterton National
Park which borders Glacier National Park on
the Canadian side. It is an International Peace Park which
is jointly governed by both USA and Canadian authorities.
Although it is one of the smaller national parks in Canada, to
us it was one of the most beautiful and exciting to visit. We
stayed two nights in the small but bustling town of Waterton,
Alberta. Highlights were the Prince of Wales hotel and the
boat ride on Waterton Lake sailing south and crossing the
border to the Goat Haunt ranger station in Glacier National
Park. We had tremendous views of glaciers, peaks, and bald
eagles, and there was even a flute player on this ride.
We then headed northeast through Alberta towards
Banff. Some of our preferred roads were washed out by
major flooding in the latter part of July; thus, we had to
adjust our planned route and travel through a very busy
Calgary—think I-25 through Denver during rush hour. A
funny incident occurred during the drive between Calgary
and Banff when our group was “mooned” by a passenger
in a passing jacked-up pickup. “Just some Alberta rednecks
jealous of your little cars” is what our hostess in Banff told us
when we described this to her.
In Banff we stayed at a B&B just blocks away from
downtown and got a hands-on feel of a very international
tourist mecca. Highlights of our two-night stay in Banff were
the gondola ride to the top of Banff Mountain and visiting
the Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station (weather station!)
on top of the mountain. It sounds like a broken record,
but the views of the Banff Fairmont Hotel, the town itself,
and many mountain peaks and valleys in the distance are
spectacular to behold.
Our next destinations were Morraine Lake, Lake Louise,
and Peyto Glacier on the southern edge of the ice road that
heads further north to Jasper. All the lakes and rivers have the
blue-green color from the melting glaciers. The Lake Louise
Fairmont Hotel was very beautiful and in a great setting right
beside the lake.
We headed south and west into British Columbia by
traveling on the major Canadian Interstate that goes from
Toronto to Vancouver. Our destination was a B&B south of
the town of Revelstoke, British Columbia. In this very lush,
mountainous area are four Canadian National Parks: Yoho,
Revelstoke, Kootenay, and Glacier (not to be confused with
the US national park). Our B&B was located on the Upper
Arrow Lake, which is created by one of many dams on the
Columbia River.
After two nights we continued south to
Crawford Bay, which is on the very long and
large Kootenay Lake. To get to our destination,
we sailed on two ferries, crossing Upper Arrow
Lake and Kootenay Lake. As a bonus that day,
we had the opportunity to visit the Ainsworth
Hot Springs for a very relaxing soak. The B&B
at Crawford Bay, Wedgwood Country Inn, was
by far the best lodging on our trip, and we
learned that the owners have a connection to
the Denver area. After two days we continued
south to the US border and through Coeur
d’Alene on to our last stop in Billings, MT. The
next day we headed home to Colorado with
great memories.
Driving the many very twisty and scenic
roads in the western United States is an absolute
blast in a Porsche, so when are you going take a
memorable adventure in your car?

Recently I was fortunate enough to be handed the
keys to a 991 Turbo S for an afternoon’s worth of
unsupervised driving. Now, when I use the
word unsupervised, I do not wish to imply
that my driving was in any way impolite,
but when you have a super car all to
yourself, your experience will always be
of a different color from when the owner
of the vehicle is with you. And when I
use the word supercar, I absolutely mean
it. The 991 platform represents such a
remarkable step forward in technological
innovation, and technological excellence,
that my experience with the Turbo S has led
me to believe that I had just driven the future.
A bit about myself: I work for 3ZERO3 Motorsports,
and I have driven a lot of very fast cars on the street and
on the track. As a result of my experiences, I am building
a hot-rodded air-cooled 911. So I would categorize
myself as a Porsche purist who is more than a
little nostalgic for the older cars.
When the PDK transmission first
debuted, I had my doubts. Indeed, cars
equipped with this new double-clutch
gearbox were indeed much faster than
anything controlled by a human, but
what happened to driving purity? What
happened to connecting the driver to the
mechanical systems that drive the car? I
have driven plenty of PDK cars, and while
I appreciate the merits of the technology, I
just never felt like it was something I would ever
want to pay for, and it was never something I wanted,
until now …
... when you
have a super car
all to yourself, your
experience will always be
of a different color from
when the owner of the
vehicle is with you.

What I found is that the 991 Turbo S is the best
platform for highlighting the current generation of Porsche
technology. Whenever I jump into a high-horsepower car,
there is always something of a power calibration that takes
place in my head. 400 hp in a Ford Mustang feels much
different (read: slower; sorry Ford fans!) than 400 hp in a
996 Turbo. Please believe me when I tell you that 560 hp
in this 911 Turbo feels like 1000 hp in anything else. You
squeeze the throttle, and things happen fast. Real fast.
You are up against the rev limiter before you know it, and
thank God, there is the PDK to manage the upshift. But
the transmission is only one element in the technological
18
profile that will define the future for the Porsche faithful.
All-wheel steering allows the car to go around slow
corners as if it had a motorsports-tuned JRZ suspension
system. At speed, the all-wheel steering allows the car to
change directions faster than anything I have ever driven.
The speed of the 991 does not result from the twin-turbo
engine, nor does it result from the 0.010-second shift speed.
Dynamically, the technological integration of engine,
steering, transmission, braking, and suspension systems
is what allows this 560 hp to feel like 1000 hp. Because
Porsche engineers have organized all of these systems with
such prodigious ability, the net result is that when pushed
hard, the technology serves to multiply horsepower.
Besides being thoroughly dazzled by this brand
spanking new 911 Turbo, I am left with the idea that
Porsche engineers have got things so right that the driving
experience is more pure in this configuration than any
other “automatic” equipped Porsche.
In the 991 Turbo S, the engineers are like angels on
your shoulder, managing steering, shifting, braking and
suspension, while you concentrate on driving triple digit
speeds, and not totally giggling like a schoolgirl. Rather
than feeling like I was not part of the process of driving the
car, I can’t tell you what a connected experience driving
this car was. I did not want to deal with shifting myself.
Karl Marx told us that we had to suffer thru perpetual
sociopolitical evolution (of which democracy exists)
before the utopian state of Marxist communism could be
realized. Well, as a Porsche purist, I think the integration of
automated technology on this 991 has reached a similarly
utopian pinnacle in the 991 Turbo S.
To those that might disagree with my take on this
technology, I accept that this is an opinion difficult to
obtain merely by reading, so to those critics, I say drive it.
I used to really hate the Porsche Cayenne, until the day I
drove one, then I bought a Turbo.

March 8th, 9-11am at Porsche of Colorado Springs
by Joel Godfredson, Vice President of AMR-PCA
Ever wonder what AMR’s Driver
Education (DE) is really like? Is it
racing? Can I use my daily driver? Do
I need special tires? Will I hurt my
precious baby? Will I feel intimidated
by the track junkies? If you’ve read
the information on Driver Ed on
the PCA and AMR websites or read
the periodic articles in the AMR
newsletter or Panorama, some or all of
these questions and more have been
addressed and hopefully answered.
But there’s nothing like hearing it first
hand by fellow members who actually
participate in DEs.
So, what we’re planning on doing
is holding a “DE 101”
session on March 8th
at Porsche of Colorado
Springs from 9:0011:00 a.m. This event
will be in conjunction
with the Porsche of
Colorado Springs “Cars
and Coffee.” We will
20
supply everyone with some finger
foods and coffee and juice. At 11:00,
Porsche of Colorado Springs will have
a nice drive to an as-yet undisclosed
location. The drive is not part of the
PCA event but you are welcome to
attend.
This fun DE 101 event is a month
before the first 2014 AMR DE (we have
three AMR DEs scheduled in 2014: at
Pikes Peak International Raceway on
April 12-13, La Junta Raceway on May
10-11, and Pueblo Motorsports Park
on May 31-June 1, and each of these
is a great learning track for beginners).
The plan is for several of our DE
participants to tell their stories about
their DE experiences. We’ll have old
hands there along with AMR folks
who’ve only done DEs once or twice.
Then we’ll open it up for questions
and answers.
Who should come? Of course,
any member is welcome, but we’re
really trying to reach those of you
who’ve considered participating in a
DE, but for a variety of reasons have
never done so. We’re also trying to
reach new members (or long-time
members) and spouses who haven’t
really investigated the activities the
club has to offer.
There is NO cost to
participate. Nothing,
nada, zip, free … and
we’ll
provide
the
donuts and coffee!
So, please join your
Porsche friends at
Porsche of Colorado
Springs on March 8th.
Save the Date: April 12-13
Dèjà Vu DE at PPIR
Mark your calendar for this
upcoming spring Driver Education
event that is chaired once again
by Dana and Dwight Kasten,
Jr. (déjà vu, for sure!). Blow out
the cobwebs and dust off your

toy) so you can join us at this
great venue.
Repeated this year will
be great track amenities,
garage facilities, and an on-site
lunch food vendor on both
days. This event includes a
Driver Education meeting
on Friday night, optional
Saturday night dinner affair
(award winning) and the traditional end-ofevent Beer:30 celebration each day! Registration opens on
MotorsportReg on Monday, Feb. 24th. Come join us for this exciting driving
experience that has sold out in the last two years. Contact the Kastens with

So many tracks, so little time
by Chris Lennon, AMR Chief Driving Instructor
Many of us who are lucky enough to be in the Porsche
Club in Colorado don’t realize how good we have it. In
many parts of the country, folks have a Henry Ford sort of
choice, when it comes to tracks. You can drive any track
you like, as long as it’s [insert track name here]! That’s
right … in many regions of the country, you might be
lucky to have one race track within driving distance, and it
most likely is many hours away. Then, add on the fact that
DE registration in many parts of the country
runs around $500+ for a weekend, they sell
out in hours, and are often not even held on
weekends (because of the high demand for
the few tracks available).
In Colorado, we have four race tracks
where we hold DEs every year, and from my
house, none of them is more than two hours
away. Talk about lucky! And, the price of
admission to an AMR or RMR DE generally
ranges from around $175-$275 for an entire
weekend of fun!
For those perhaps not familiar with not
only the number of tracks, but the variety
that they offer, read on, and prepare to be
amazed!
I like to categorize the Colorado tracks
like ski runs (how appropriate!). Let’s start
with a green run.
Pikes Peak International Raceway
PPIR is located just south of Colorado Springs, right on
I-25. It’s also 1.3 miles in length, and in the configuration
we run, it consists of eight turns. It’s what’s known as a
“roval”—part road course, part oval. PPIR’s one-mile
oval (we run on about 2/3 of it) was the site of IndyCar,
NASCAR, and other big time races for many years. You may
be familiar with a few of its race winners: Dan Wheldon,
Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon, Buddy Lazier,
Eddie Cheever, and Tony Stewart. The track
has by far the best facilities in the state, with
the IndyCar garages, a banquet room with
a panoramic view, real restrooms, etc. It’s
loads of fun to drive, but the presence of
the oval’s wall makes it more of a “blue run”
than a “green run.” AMR’s PPIR DE leads off
our 2014 DE season, on April 12-13.
Curious about the black runs?
Between AMR
and RMR, you have
nine opportunities
to get out on track,
get some expert
instruction, and
have a blast!
La Junta Raceway
La Junta Raceway is located just outside of the town of
La Junta, about an hour east of Pueblo. It sits on runways
and taxiways of a WWII bomber training base. Sound like
somewhere else you might have heard of? That’s right—
Sebring did exactly the same thing. In fact, in the 1960s,
La Junta Raceway was several miles in length, and very
much like Sebring. It attracted the best of the best from
around the country. I have talked with one racer who ran
718 RSKs down there, and have seen the photos of scores
of fans with amazing cars racing just feet away. Today,
the La Junta track is the perfect track for a beginner. It
has no elevation change (again, it’s built on old runways
and taxiways), and it consists of just seven turns over 1.3
miles. It is the easiest of Colorado’s tracks to learn, and
it has lots of runoff, so wayward cars can’t get in a lot of
trouble. However, it also offers a lot for the experienced
driver. It can permit extremely high speed, with some of
us recording laps under 55 seconds. Do the math – that’s a
pretty high average speed. AMR’s La Junta DE is scheduled
this year for May 10-11.
Now, for a blue run … Pikes Peak International Raceway.
22
High Plains Raceway
The first of those is High Plains Raceway.
HPR is located due east of DIA, and we
can get there in a mere 1.5 hours from
Monument. It’s the newest of the tracks
we run in Colorado, and boy is it a terrific
one! It features pretty much every kind of
turn you can imagine, two great straights,
2.55 miles in length, 15 turns, and what I think is the best
sequence of turns in Colorado, the Prairie Corkscrew. If
you want to test yourself and your car, HPR is a great place
to do it, plus you get lots of chances to enjoy this fantastic
track. RMR has six DEs scheduled at HPR in 2014, in April,
June, July, August, September, and October.
Pueblo Motorsports Park
The other “black run” is Pueblo Motorsports park,
located just West of I-25, near Lake Pueblo. It is 2.2 miles
in length, with 10 turns, some fun elevation changes, and
a layout that always has everyone raving about its terrific
“flow.” It was just completely resurfaced, and is glassy
smooth. AMR has their Pueblo DE on May 31 – June 1.
So, there you have it—your quick tour of Colorado’s
awesome road courses. Between AMR and RMR, you have
nine opportunities to get out on a track, get some expert
instruction, and have a blast. If you have any questions
about any of these tracks, talk to anyone who’s been to
them, or just get directly with your two Chief Driving
Instructors, Cecil Morris (RMR) and Chris Lennon (AMR).
We’ll be happy to answer any questions you have, and help
you get ready to experience all our tracks have to offer.

HPR Driver Education Event
The First RMR DE of 2014!
Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27
As some guy named Julius Caesar once said, “We
came, we saw, we conquered!” We’re pretty sure he meant
conquered the long winter no-track blahs—it’s a little-known fact left
out of most of the history books. What will certainly go down in history is
Speed Fever V, the fifth, yes, fifth (!) installment of our season-opener DE
event at High Plains Raceway.
Joe and Troy are back for the attack and planning an event worthy
of the Speed Fever franchise name, and for sure to be the best Speed
Fever yet! We’ll have plenty of track time fun, great event give-aways,
and other things too amazing to mention in this article, for fear of
creating an uproar not unlike the time the aforementioned Caesar crossed
the Rubicon; but really, why are we talking so much about Caesar? Who
knows, it’s the middle of winter and those things just happen . . .
We’d like to thank Greg Johnson of Eurosport Ltd in Denver for
helping sponsor our event for the fourth year in a row! We’re also pleased to
announce that Lisa Bryan and her businesses (Candlelight Tavern and the
Kentucky Inn) are a new sponsor for Speed Fever V! And even though he has
left RMR for Texas, Tim Bevan and his online parts business OEM Part Haus
are returning as a sponsor as well—thanks, Tim!
As in previous years, this is a No Times DE with paid corner workers, which
means lots of track time! Registration will be limited to 140 entrants;
day-of-event walk-ins are discouraged. Stay tuned for additional
details, including the opening and closing of online registration,
drivers’ meeting times, costs, tech inspection locations, etc.
In the meantime, please contact the event chairs with any
questions: Joe Warren at [email protected] and
Troy Nakatani at [email protected].
Beware the Ides of April!
Location: High Plains Raceway, 17 miles east of Byers on US-36 (Deer Trail)
Event Registration fees: Either Saturday or Sunday: Driver: $180, Co-driver: $155 (co-drivers
must drive the same car). For both days: Driver $260, Co-driver $235.
Chief Driving Instructors: The Chief Driving Instructors for this event are Chris Sulley,

I
hope 2014 has been
good for you, so far.
Hard to believe we’re
already into the third
month of the new year,
but spring weather means
more driving opportunities!
On the other hand, most of us don’t wait for perfect weather
to get our cars out and either go on a tour or participate
in an autocross. Some members from the Carrera Region
invited members from the Mustang club in El Paso for an
impromptu drive to Cloudcroft and Sunspot, NM. As it
turned out, the Mustangs outnumbered the Porsches and
everyone enjoyed the winter scenery and the chance to
build some camaraderie between the two clubs.
I missed the first Roadrunner Region autocross of the
year (Frostbite #1), but I heard that it was well attended
and everyone got the chance to work on their technical
driving skills.
Rocky
Mountain Region also had
an autocross in January—
their annual Eiskhana on
Georgetown Lake. I hope
my schedule allows me to
attend that event next year.
Getting back to March
and to some planning,
registration will open on
March 1st for the Roadrunner
Region’s 40th edition of
Fiesta New Mexico. This
year’s Fiesta will be centered
in Albuquerque, and some
exciting new events are
being planned in addition
to the traditional events.
Check the event website,
www.fiestanewmexico.com,
for details.
On March 11th, the
Parade registration will
open. As most everyone
knows, this year’s Parade
will be held in Monterey,
June 15th thru the 21st.
Several Zone 9 members
In the zone
Liz Shaw, PCA Zone 9 Representative
are involved in this year’s
Parade as part of the staff or
helping in another capacity.
Rocky Mountain Region’s
John Mackin is the Banquet
Chairman, Jo Martin and
I are the Michelin Drive &
Compare Chairs, Sean Cridland is the Parade Webmaster
and Historical Display Chairman, and fellow Roadrunner
Region member, Riley Kelley, is designing the Parade
trophies. As National Safety Chairperson, Jo Martin will
also be busy checking on the various activities for safety.
Parade is definitely the must-do event of the year, and
volunteering at Parade makes the whole experience that
much better. Plus, by volunteering for two shifts, you’ll
be able to attend the worker party at the end of the week
where tons-o-prizes are handed out!
In mid-March (15th–17th), West Texas Region will
have a tour to Monument
Valley, starting in Lubbock.
I don’t have all the details
right now, but if anyone’s
interested in going on this
tour, please contact Wil
Carter, WTR President,
and he’ll relay the info to
the tour leaders.
And now here’s one
more reminder to make
sure you check the Region
calendars frequently and
get your plans together to
win the Zone 9 Challenge
trophy! With the various
activities going on all over
Zone 9, there’s something
for everyone! And if you
attend Parade and Escape,
you get extra points!
Lastly, RMR lost a longtime and beloved member
of their club. Bill Lamb
(left) passed away after a
lengthy battle with cancer.
He was a wonderful man
and will be missed dearly.

I get around
Dick Badler, RMR/PCA Columnist
O Roseanna
Jane:
And now, with
tonight’s commentary, here’s
Roseanne Rosannadanna.
Roseanne: Thanks, Jane.
A Richard Feder, from Ft.
Lee, N.J., writes to say, “Hey,
Roseanne, what’s with this
cone incident on the George
Washington Bridge? I live in
Ft. Lee. In fact, I can see the
bridge from my apartment. And
I can say it’s bumper to bumper every
morning, noon and night. Sometimes
all morning, noon and night. You
don’t need to close a lane in order to
create a traffic jam. And you certainly
don’t need traffic cones to do it. You
just wake up in the morning, and it
happens, like the sun rising in the
east.
“And now, my neighbors and I
are enduring all these tourists, these
rubberneckers, these souvenir hunters,
these TV news crews, these subversive
political animals, pouring into our
nice, bucolic burg, all looking for
evidence that Chris Christie was here.
“What can we do?”
Hey, Richard, who told you to live
in Ft. Lee? It’s a free country, isn’t
it? You can live anywhere you want.
Why there?
Why do people who live near
airports complain about the air traffic?
Why do people who live near bridges
complain about the car and bus and
truck traffic?
And here’s something to ponder.
Do you know what came first? Do
you have any idea what your nice,
high-rise apartment with the view of
the bridge was, before your town was
paved over, to make way for progress?
Here’s what it was: an amusement
park!
Yeah! And not just any amusement
park. It was Palisades Park. And there
30
was even a hit song about it: Down at
Palisades Park.
And you probably thought the
song was sung by Lou Christie, didn’t
you? Who you think is a longlost relative of your current sitting
governor. Now, that would be real
poetic justice, wouldn’t it?
But it’s not true. It was sung by
Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon. How’s
that for irony, Mr. Feder?
No, Mr. Feder, your real problem
is the Coneheads. That’s right, Mr.
Feder, people who steal cones and set
them up in parking lots, creating all
sorts of zigs and zags, totally ignoring
parking spots and arrows and entries
and exits. These are the people you
really should be worried about.
Because, do you know what these
people do with their cones, after
they’ve set them up in weird patterns
in parking lots? They put them on
their heads. And then they walk
around, talking like robots, and saying
they’re from France.
I’m not kidding, Mr. Feder. It’s
scary.
They can’t help it.
And
neither can our Immigration and
Naturalization Service. Because, you
see, they’re not from France at all.
They don’t speak French. And they’re
not from here either, because they
don’t speak American. They don’t
belong here. There’s your issue, Mr.
Feder. There’s a real issue for you.
Now, here’s the kicker for
you, Mr. Feder ... Do you have
any idea what the Coneheads
did, before your nice, bucolic
high rise apartment in the sky
was created? That’s right, they
set up their cones in the Palisades
Park parking lot, on days when
the amusement park was closed.
Which is why they’re back,
storming around your town and
your bridge. Mr. Feder, you need to
have mercy on these souls. They’re
lost. Lost. Because they can’t find
their way home. First they put up a
parking lot. Then the city was gone.
Can you blame them?
But there’s more.
Coneheads
drive fast cars. And they drive cars
fast. And their cars all have sunroofs.
And the sunroofs are always open. So
their cones can have headroom.
Do you drive fast, Mr. Feder? I
bet you drive something like a beater
Corolla. Which is good for one
thing: sitting in traffic on the George
Washington Bridge. I want to walk
up to you and knock on the window
and say, hey, mister, I, Roseanne
Rosannadanna, am walking beside
you. And I’m keeping up. Don’t you
think you can go a little faster? I want
to get to where I’m going before I’m
too old to know I got there.
I walk up to Corvette owners, and
I say, hey, stud, where are you going?
I walk up to Porsche owners, and I
say, hey, wo gehst du hin? I don’t say,
hey, ou allez vous. They’re not from
France, Mr. Feder. That should be a
clue for you.
Jane: That’s enough! Enough!
Roseanne, you, madam, are out of
time. And you’re out of your mind.
Good night and have a pleasant
tomorrow!
Pre-Tech Events
Look through any issue of HighGear, and you’ll see many
shops that support our members. We’d like to highlight a
small group of them that go the “extra lap” by supporting
our DE Tech Inspection program: Eurosport Ltd., Prestige
Imports, Poudre Sports Car, and Simple Automotive
Solutions (Carquip) have all agreed to host for our 2014
Pre-Tech events. These Pre-Techs are held 10 days before each of the
scheduled RMR DE events, and allow participants to have
their cars inspected, free of charge, to ensure that they
are ready for on-track fun. Pre-Tech events are typically
scheduled from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm, but the preparation, setup, and tear-down requires a shop to dedicate its space
and people for well over two hours. This can be a major
investment for a busy shop!

This month’s random
question asked to five
random members:
“There are many
options in the
world of premium
sports cars. What
makes Porsches
so desireable?”
Bruce Banning (‘02 911 C2)
“For one thing, the heritage Porsche has
is amazing with many cars being familyowned for generations, plus you get a lot
of car for the money. They’re also fun to
drive and maintain their value.”
Jason Quade (‘05 Boxster S)
“When I was growing up, I had these car
posters all over my room and it’s always
been Porsches for me. They’re unique.
They have all the performance and the
handling of the others, but with that unique
look unlike any other.”
Vicki Ottoson (‘99 911 Carrera and
‘03 Carrea Coupe)
“I think Dr. Ferdinand Porsche was a
master of technology. His innovations
throughout his career are just amazing
and attractive to any mechanical guy.”
Michael Henk (‘05 Boxster S)
“What drew me in was childhood
memories of seeing them and being
around them. I’ve kind of been a fanatic
about them ever since.”
Jim Kemp (‘88 911 Targa)
“Not only the performance and styling, but
it’s also the following. If you get a Ferrari,
you have such a narrow band with so few
people to talk to or help work on it while
Porsche has such massive following and
a broader base with so many options and
such a bigger pool to swim
in.” 2014 31

What we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in
your Porsche by particip ating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech
sessions, car shows and more.
DRIVING EVENTS
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which
participants follow a given route to a destination
(which may or may not be known in advance). A tour
may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend
with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow
scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/
or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are
sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and
a dose of competition to the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR
typically offers several. A number of tours are
usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which contestants
attempt to follow a course specified by a set of
instructions. Rallies are typically run on public,
paved roads, and speed limits are always observed.
The two major types of rallies are the Time-SpeedDistance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD
rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions
precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points
are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the
locations of which are not known in advance) early
or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid
and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—
at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche
Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a
Gimmick rally, each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which drivers
navigate their cars through a course defined by
orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top
speeds are generally moderate, topping out around
40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many
cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals—
typically only one or two cars are on the course at
any time. Autocross is a safe way to experience
high-performance driving while learning to drive
your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially
an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX
school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a
major event at Porsche Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe,
controlled environment for high-performance driving
instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the
opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the
help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled,
closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA
philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times
is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE
experience may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for
racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some
DE events are followed immediately by a time trial
event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify
their performance. Lap times may then be used to
measure personal improvement, for bragging rights,
etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La
Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak
International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event.
A race weekend consists of a number of practice
sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often
involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races. As
a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is
required for competition, club racers are serious
and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with
them to the track can be quite impressive! As a
point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program
was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever
Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an event
of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of
volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting
events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each year at High Plains
Raceway which, combined with a Driver Education
event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!
NON-DRIVING EVENTS
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity to
reconnect with old friends and meet new members.
Historically, a membership meeting begins with a
social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s
program. The content of the program varies,
sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent
event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished
Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst.
Membership socials, unless otherwise stated,
are held the first Thursday of the month. Different
venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and
inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for
details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to
the Committee Chair or a Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like–a
session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not
just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate
practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake
bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by
experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom
are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year,
typically in the “off months” when few driving
events take place. In addition, numerous tech
sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in which
contestants endeavor to present their cars in
as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A
number of judged categories usually exist, typically
differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356,
Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or
“full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars
sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for
owners who wish to participate but not compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local concours
events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports
Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting
United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche
Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

Peddling Porsche parts pleases participants
The 1974 Parts Auction was held on March 7th at the Village Inn (I-70 and Kipling). There was no charge for
buying/selling, and the selling order was set by lot. Sellers
outnumbered buyers and there were five full tables of
Porsche paraphernalia. 34
