Both clubs have seen contracted players from the Illawarra Cutters and Dragons u20s called upon in recent weeks by these teams which has meant reshuffled line-ups and the depth of the club well and truly tested. Round 1 saw Dapto squeeze home against Corrimal at Ziems Park, whilst the Cougars played one of their best games this year when defeating Dapto in Round 6 at Dapto Showground. Both line-ups will look different to those earlier encounters. The Cougars will be hoping that they rediscover the good Friday night form which has served them well in 2015. The match was a high quality affair, even with both teams having plenty of talent on the sideline. The Tigers gained the upper hand in the second half and pulled away, but Wests battled hard and with an ounce of luck could have been much closer at fulltime. The youngsters in the Wests pack, lead up front by stalwart Greg Reh, did well against the bigger Helensburgh pack, and the talent in the halves of both teams was always going to have a big influence on the outcome. The two will lock horns again on Sat 15 August at Rex Jackson Oval to see who will take a head to head advantage into the finals series. If matches of this quality are on offer, the 2015 Illawarra Coal League finals series won’t disappoint! Collies bounced back last week to grab their first win since early May, when they pinched the game after the bell with a Reece Jaeger penalty to break a 24-all scoreline against Corrimal. This week they venture next door to neighbours Wests, and face a tough task to go back-to-back. Despite last week’s loss, Wests showed again that they will be a force in this competition in 2015. Collies will need to be prepared to match it with Wests very physical forwards if they are a chance of an upset. O’Connor Page 3 Collies captain JARROD THOMPSON appears to be convincing the referee that he is in fact “a dog” during his teams narrow 26-24 win after the final siren over a gallant Corrimal side. The Butchers have found some consistency with wins over Collies and Dapto recently, whilst the Tigers avenged their only loss in 2015 against Wests. If the Butchers can be at their best, they are not without a chance against the competition leaders, who have a long list of injuries. Recent games between these two in the last few years have been enthralling, and we may have another great game before us. With a strong northern rivalry, a healthy crowd should be on hand as the Tigers faithful travel down the hill to breath in the salt air. The 81st minute commentary team will broadcast live from Gibson Park from 1pm, so if you can’t get to the ground listen to the live online coverage through www.radiohub.com.au and find the link to the Thirroul v Helensburgh game. Thanks to Curtis Woodward and his team for providing this great coverage for the Illawarra Coal League – we hope to have you back again in the near future! A win 32-6 over Mt Kembla was followed by an upset of the undefeated Norths by 14-12 midweek, then they backed up to outlast Windang by 18-16. They venture to Parrish Park on Saturday and the clash with 2nd placed Wests should be a cracking game with both in great form in recent weeks.
