Charger Newsletter May 2016
May 2016 Newsletter Cherry Chase, where Learning is CORE – caring, organized, respectful, and engaging! Greetings to our Cherry Chase community! As we all feel the intensity of the school year quickly approaching its close, it is important to take time to celebrate the learning experiences and growth that have occurred for our students during this school year. This week offered a prime opportunity to do that with so many of you during our annual Open House – my favorite night of the year at Cherry Chase! It’s a night when all the elements that make Cherry Chase the wonderful school that it is come together – students, families, and teachers joyfully reflecting on their many accomplishments in classrooms and then strengthening relational bonds over ice cream, conversation and playground play time. Thank you for contributing to this community and for honoring your children’s accomplishments with us! Last Friday we welcomed home our tired, happy, and wet 5th graders after their week away at Walden West. Their days were filled with new experiences and nature-based learning, all designed to fulfill 5th grade science standards (but don’t tell them it really was still school. J). UPCOMING DATES May 17 PTA Meeting at 7:00 p.m. with guest speaker Kathryn Otoshi, author May 20 Coffee with the Principal at 8:45 a.m. in the multi May 26 Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the multi May 30 Memorial Day, no school June 3 ELAC Meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the multi th June 8 5 Grade Promotion Ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in multi June 8 Last Day of School – 11:35 dismissal August 17 First Day of the 2016-2017 School Year at Cherry Chase! As the weather has gotten better, more students are riding to school on bikes and scooters. We ask you to remember that Charger Pride should be in effect all around our school, including on the streets and sidewalks before and after school. BE SAFE – by wearing helmets, riding slowly on sidewalks, and looking out for other people. BE RESPECTFUL – by paying attention to the people who are walking on sidewalks and letting them know that you are attempting to pass. Ride slowly – or get off and walk your bike or scooter – in congested areas. BE RESPONSIBLE – by following all applicable laws. Children may ride bikes on sidewalks, but adults should be in the street. Thanks for helping us to ensure that all members of our Cherry Chase community travel safely to and from school. Warmly, Mrs. Lee May 2016 Community Events Vargas Elementary School Carnival and Bike Rodeo Saturday, May 14, 2016 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunnyavale Public Safety will be sponsoring a bike rodeo at the Vargas Elementary School Carnival. Come join the fun! Stranger Awareness Class for Parents Tuesday, May 24, 2016, 7-9pm 6-7:30 p.m. Sunnyvale Public Library, Program Room – 665 W. Olive Ave. Stranger Awareness class is different from the idea of Stranger Danger. Stranger Danger suggests that all strangers are dangerous, which is not true and can cause a child to be afraid around all people. Sometimes a child may need to interact with a stranger to get help and children need to be confident to seek the assistance of someone he or she does not know. This class will provide helpful techniques for parents and caregivers to teach their children how to keep themselves safe, recognize who is a safe stranger, how children can stay safe around people they already know and some internet safety tips. To register, call 408-730-7800 Creative Writing Camp for Grades 3–5 Monday, June 27 – Friday, July 1, 2016 9:00 am – 2:30 pm A fun week of camp-style writing classes designed for elementary students to develop their imaginative skills and hone their craft for writing fiction or creative nonfiction. Students learn how writers draw on research and real experience for their stories. They experiment with various formats, i.e. cartoons, online articles, scripts, etc. Experienced, credentialed writing teachers give engaging concise lessons and demonstrate techniques for developing the work that students choose. Teachers confer to give feedback while workshops are in progress. Class size is limited to 16. Arts and crafts are available at recess and lunch times to further encourage creativity.
