Stewardship
Exploring Year-Round Stewardship
Since stewardship—managing all of life with Christ at the
center—is about so much more than the congregation’s budget,
why do we only talk about it once a year? Discover new ways to
celebrate God’s abundance and all that God has entrusted to our
care—money and so much more.

Central Lutheran Church
Westminster Presbyterian Church
Central Lutheran Church began as an idea in 1917, gained
momentum in 1918 and became reality in 1919. Though
the founders were nearly all of Norwegian descent, they
were determined that Central would seek its members from
the people moving into the downtown area, welcoming
everyone regardless of ethnicity, race or economic status.
Central rapidly outgrew its original seating capacity, necessitating the construction of a new sanctuary that would
seat up to 3,000. Along with the addition of a cathedral in
the neo-Gothic style, Central dedicated the new building
on Palm Sunday in 1928. It is believed to be the largest
Lutheran, cathedral-type structure in North America.
Central has been the proud home of a Casavant organ since
1963, featuring four manuals and pedals, 78 stops and 107
ranks. Central is located at the corner of 12th Street and
Third Avenue in downtown Minneapolis.
Founded in 1857 by eight people of Scotch, Irish and Welsh
heritage, Westminster Presbyterian Church aims to serve
as a “telling presence in the city.” The church is located at
the corner of 12th Street and Nicollet Avenue. The architectural design of the church was modeled after its earlier
church building, located on Seventh Street and Nicollet
Avenue, which was heavily damaged by fire. The sanctuary
seats 1,500 people and, staying consistent with the Presbyterian commitment to Word and Sacrament, the focus in
the sanctuary is on the pulpit and communion table. The
Nicollet Mall Rose Window contains more than 4,000 individual pieces of glass and 672 glass jewels, and measures
approximately 16 feet in diameter. Westminster was entered
into the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Princeton Theological Seminary
M. Craig Barnes began his presidency
in January 2013, and also serves as
professor of pastoral ministry. Barnes
earned his Master of Divinity degree
from Princeton Seminary in 1981 and
his Ph.D. in church history from the
University of Chicago in 1992. Previously, Barnes was a

serves as a columnist for The Christian Century.
John Bell was born and resides in Scotland. He is a liturgical composer who
writes cooperatively with colleagues in
Glasgow. He has a deep interest in music
from non-European cultures and a passion for song of the Assembly. Though
his primary vocation is as a preacher and teacher, he spends
more than half his time working in the areas of music and
liturgy, both at conferences and in small parishes. His work
takes him frequently into Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and
Australia. With his colleagues, he has produced more than
15 collections of songs and octavos and a wide range of liturgical materials, particularly for use by lay people. Additionally, he oversaw the production of a substantial hymnal
for the Church of Scotland which, in North America, is
titled “Hymns of Glory, Songs of Praise.” He has also authored a number of collections of sermons and meditation
and is an occasional broadcaster on radio and television.

Luke Powery
Peter Rollins
Dean of Duke Chapel and Associate Professor of
the Practice of Homiletics, Duke Divinity School.
Writer, Lecturer, Storyteller and Public Speaker
Prior to his appointment at Duke, the
Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery served as the
Perry and Georgia Engle Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Princeton Theological Seminary. He received his B.A.
in music with a concentration in vocal performance from
Stanford University, his M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary and his Th.D. from Emmanuel College at the
University of Toronto. His teaching and research interests
are located at the intersection of preaching, worship, pneumatology, performance studies and culture, particularly
expressions of the African diaspora. He has written two
books, titled “Spirit Speech: Lament and Celebration in
Preaching” and “Dem Dry Bones: Preaching, Death, and
Hope.” Powery was ordained by the Progressive National
Baptist Convention and has served in an ecumenical capacity in churches throughout Switzerland, Canada and the
United States. He is a member of the Academy of Homiletics, for which he serves as secretary; the American Academy
of Religion; and the Society for the Study of Black Religion.
Powery served as a member of the executive lectionary team
for the African-American Lectionary and is the recipient of
numerous scholastic fellowships and awards. In 2008, the
African-American Pulpit named him one of 20 outstanding black ministers under the age of 40 who are helping
shape the future direction of the church.
Peter Rollins is a widely sought after
writer, lecturer, storyteller and public
speaker. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and is the founder of Ikon,
a Belfast-based faith group that blends
live music, visual imagery, soundscapes,
theater, ritual and reflection. Rollins specializes in various aspects of continental philosophy, phenomenology and
emerging church theology. He is currently a research associate with the Irish School of Ecumenics at Trinity College. Rollins has gained an international reputation for
overturning traditional notions of religion and forming
“churches” that preach the Good News that we can’t be
satisfied, that life is difficult and that we don’t know the
secret. He is the author of “How (Not) to Speak of God,”
in which he argues that Christian faith is not simply able to
make room for doubt, mystery and unknowing, but rather
fundamentally embraces them. Rollins gained his higher
education from Queens University in Belfast and holds
degrees in scholastic philosophy, political theory and poststructural thought. He is the author of numerous books,
including “Insurrection: To Believe is Human; to Doubt,
Divine” and “The Idolatry of God: Breaking our Addiction
to Certainty and Satisfaction.”

the
launch project
Think. Provoke. Begin.
The Launch Project is a series of one-day gatherings designed to move people to new kinds of
leadership. Designed for Christian leaders, participants will wrestle with the challenges of living out
our calling to follow Jesus. The project is not satisfied with passive learning. Participants should
expect to engage their hearts and minds, and plan to be challenged by presenters and colleagues.
It’s our hope that everyone leaves these gatherings inspired to begin ministry in new ways.
The format for each gathering will include large-group led by the presenter, as well as smaller-format
discussions, including time with each presenter. Lunch will be served.
Space is limited to the first 90 registrations – cost is $199 for the series.

Musicians
National Lutheran Choir
The National Lutheran Choir, under the direction of Dr. David Cherwien,
seeks to strengthen, renew and preserve the Lutheran heritage of choral music through the highest standards
of performance and literature. The
choir performs literature from the
entire spectrum of sacred choral
music, with and without instrumental accompaniment. The choir’s
rich and diverse repertoire ranges
from early chant to new compositions and from simple folk anthems
to complex orchestral masterworks.
Members of the National Lutheran
Choir are drawn from the Twin Cities area and beyond for weekly rehearsals
and local and national performances. The ensemble presents a wide range of
choral works in concert and worship settings; leads workshops in choral techniques, hymnody and liturgy; commissions and publishes new compositions;
and broadcasts and records extensively. The choir was founded in 1986 by Dr.
Larry Fleming. The National Lutheran Choir was the recipient of the 2007
Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence from Chorus America and the
2007 Wittenberg Award from the Luther Institute.

Biographers, Poets, and Journalists
by Cornelius Plantinga, Jr.
This beautifully written book is not only for preachers,
but for all those interested in good reading that…
• generates delight,
• tunes the ear for language,
• enlarges compassion for people and situations,
• and “gets” wisdom.
