Hearing aids may
Help Seniors keep
Sharp minds
A hearing aid may do more
than help you hear better: New
research suggest that the devices might also help prevent
mental decline in elderly people
with hearing loss. Researchers
found that mental function was
directly linked to hearing ability
in those who didn’t use a hearing aid.
The study suggests that using
a hearing aid may offer a simple,
yet important, way to prevent
or slow the development of dementia by keeping adults with
hearing loss engaged in conversation and communication.
You may notice that many
adults do not engage in social
exchanges at outside events or
sometimes even around the dining table because they cannot
hear the conversation due to
music, loud noises or just background noise. This kind of conversation provides an important
bridge to the outside world.
More than half of people older than 75 have hearing loss, but
fewer than 15 percent of those
with hearing loss use a hearing
aid.
Other research has shown
that hearing-impaired elderly
people are at increased risk for
falling and accident-related
death, as well as social isolation,
emotional issues and dementia.

Free Ice Cream
at Pleasant Mt.
Library July 4
The Wayne Library Alliance has
made available a new key tag to
replace the existing paper library
cards. It uses barcodes the same
as supermarket key tags. The librarian simply scans your tag and
your books or movies to complete
the transaction. It attaches to your
key ring so it’s less likely to be lost
and it’s laminated so it’s less likely
to be damaged.
Along with a multitude of other
programs, the Wayne Library Alliance coordinates the interlibrary
loan system for the Wayne County
libraries and since 2014 between
the Wayne and Pike County libraries, too. The Alliance key tags will
be given free of charge to new adult
library card applicants. Existing
card holders may continue to use
their existing cards or upgrade to
the key tag for a fee of $2.00. Card
holders under age 16 will continue
to receive the conventional paper
cards. The key tag, as well as all
existing library cards may be used
at any of the libraries in Wayne
and Pike counties.
On July 4 ONLY and ONLY at
the Pleasant Mount Public Library,
anyone who applies for their first
library card, or any adult who
upgrades to the new key tag, will
receive a free ice cream. This special promotion is to encourage
people to check out everything
their local library has to offer. It is
offered courtesy of the Friends of
the Pleasant Mount Public Library.
