Recycle Phone Books as
Part of Spring Cleaning
Why leave your old
phone books on the
shelf when they can
be recycled and put
to good use? Recycled
phone books are made into products such
as animal bedding, home insulation, bathroom tissue, cereal boxes, roofing shingles,
and last but not least, new phone books.

If you find phone books from previous
years while doing your spring cleaning,
take them to a recycling drop-off location
or bring them to our office. We thank you
(and so does Mother Earth).
Spring Equinox May
Affect Your TV Picture
If your TV picture momentarily turns
snowy or blurry in March, it’s probably
from a sun outage due to the spring equinox. This is a natural phenomenon which
occurs twice a year (in the spring and
fall), when the sun appears to pass directly
behind the satellite, as seen from the
receiving antenna.
During these brief “eclipse” periods —when
the receiving antenna on the earth, the satellite, and the sun are in direct alignment — the sun’s focused “noise” energy overwhelms
the video signal from the satellite. Reception
becomes degraded and eventually impossible
for a brief period of time, usually less than
15 minutes. All communications providers
using satellites experience this effect.
There is nothing that can be done from a
technical standpoint to prevent the sun
outage effects. Fortunately however, sun
outages are a short-term problem, lasting
about ten days, and end when the equinox
is over.
Help is Just Three Digits Away
The following three-digit codes are widely available and give
you easy phone access to important services. Keep them handy
for quick reference.
2-1-1 Community Information and Referral Services
A call to 2-1-1 connects you to certified referral specialists who provide the most
current information on food, housing, employment, health care counseling, and
more. All calls are free and confidential.
4-1-1 Directory Assistance
Dial 4-1-1 to obtain local listings, area codes, long distance numbers, and tollfree numbers for anywhere in the U.S. or Canada. In most areas, there is a fee to
use this service, which is applied to your phone bill.
5-1-1 Travel and Weather Information
Receive the latest and most accurate road and weather conditions by dialing 5-1-1.
7-1-1 Telecommunications Relay Service
7-1-1 is your quick connection to the Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS).
TRS enables individuals who have a hearing or speech impairment to be
able to communicate by telephone. You can call 7-1-1 anywhere in the U.S. The
Relay service is state-funded and provided free of charge, 24 hours a day. While
there are no charges to access the relay, standard long distance charges do apply.
8-1-1 Know What’s Below - Call Before you Dig
Digging safely means calling 8-1-1 before each job. Your call to 8-1-1 allows affected
facility operators to locate and mark underground facilities in the area in which
you’re digging, whether you’re a professional excavator or a homeowner.
9-1-1 Emergency
Call 9-1-1 for emergencies requiring an immediate response from fire, police,
and ambulance services.
For reliability and safety, we urge you to include a landline phone service as
a part of your communications mix. Call 218-692-2777 to learn more.

Crosslake Area Library
The first week of March is “National Return
Your Borrowed Books Week” during which we
give amnesty to all those returning Crosslake
Area Library materials. The non-refundable
administration fee attached to your fine notices
will be waived; simply drop off all your overdue
materials from March 1 through March 7.
Mark your calendars for another Legacy
Grant Amendment presentation coming to
the Crosslake Community Center. This free
event will be on Thursday, March 17 at
1:30 pm. Minnesota author Chad Lewis will be
presenting “Paranormal Minnesota - Tales of
Ghosts, UFOs, and Mysterious Creatures.”
This program covers the entire spectrum of
Minnesota’s supernatural activity.
For over two decades, Chad Lewis has
traveled the back roads of the world in
search of the strange and unusual. Chad has
been featured on the Discovery Channel’s A
Haunting, William Shatner’s Weird or What,
ABC’s Scariest Places on Earth, Monsters and
Mysteries and Beyond Belief, along with being
a frequent contributor on Ripley’s Believe it or
Not Radio. With a master’s degree in psychology, Chad has authored over 20 books on the
supernatural, and extensively lectures on his
fascinating findings.
Monthly Safety Tips
Robert Hartman, Police Chief
I hope everyone has had a safe winter so far.
Just a quick note to be very cautious if you are
venturing out onto the frozen lakes as this is
the time of year when the ice begins to “honeycomb.” This is the truly dangerous ice if one
happens to run onto it.
Honeycombed patches are usually darker
in appearance than the surrounding ice and
are often deceiving; they actually look better
than really good snow ice. Look carefully for
honeycomb ice any time during the latter part
of the season, when a couple of bright, warm
days have occurred during the week. At this
time of the season, water on the ice is common
and conditions may be judged reasonably safe
just as long as the water remains on the surface. Beware, however! The moment that water
drains off, it’s a sign of honeycombed ice.
Mayor’s Report
Steve Roe, Mayor
March brings the Crosslake St. Patrick’s Day
Festivities. Many events are being planned:
Royalty Crowning, Pot-O-Gold Medallion
Search, Grand Parade, Firemen’s Pancake
Breakfast, Street Food Vendors, Beer Garden,
Live Music and Great Irish Food. This all takes
place on March 12, 2016 right here in Crosslake.
Don’t forget to get your Blinkie Button. If you
have questions, please contact the Crosslake
Chamber of Commerce at 218-692-4027.
Many of the festivities and activities in
our community happen because of the great
people that we have working to make our City
a great place to live, work, play and visit. I wish
to thank everyone — citizens, city employees,
volunteers and businesses — for your participation and work.
The government issues are always present:
Dream Island Bridge replacement, Crow Wing
County sales tax addition for the Highway
program here in the County, Crosslake Road
maintenance program, Communications
Company future, Drinking and Surface Water
Quality preservation and Invasive Species
detection and prevention. Your continuing
support for the issues surrounding our growth
is truly appreciated.
Economic Development
Patty Norgaard, EDA President
At the March 2, 2016 EDA meeting, we will
have a guest speaker from Minnesota GreenStep Cities. This organization was started in
2007 by Hunt Technologies, Clean Energy
Resource Team (CERTS) and GPI (Great
Plains Industries) to challenge, assist and
recognize cities regarding their achievement
of sustainability and quality of life goals. In
2010, the program was launched at a League
of Minnesota Cities conference.
The free program is based on 29 best
practices that are focused on cost saving and
energy use reduction and encourage civic
innovation. A few of the best practices are:
1. A continuous improvement pathway for
cities to “go green” and become more sustainable and resilient
2. W
ays to save city staff time when researching
cost-effective actions for cutting energy use
and accomplishing other sustainable goals
Because our economy is largely dependent
on forest and lakes, it makes sense that Crosslake would join the other 91 cities that are part
of the Minnesota GreenStep Cities coalition.
The PAL Foundation sincerely appreciates all who donated during
our annual fund drive. Without these contributions, it would be
impossible to support all the wonderful community events and
programs each year. If you would like to help us continue these
activities, please send your donation to the PAL Foundation,
14126 Daggett Pine Road, Crosslake MN 56442.
Fireworks Update - The PAL Foundation, Crosslake Chamber
and the City of Crosslake are working together to make the 2016
fireworks show the best ever. The Fireworks Committee is planning to create a barge that will give us the capability to grow the
show and also provide a safer environment for all those involved in
setting up and shooting the fireworks. As part of this process, we
are looking for aluminum pontoons to be donated to help us build
a barge that will be utilized along with the island to carry out the
fireworks display. If you or someone you know would like to donate
an older aluminum pontoon, please contact Cindy at the Chamber or
Jon at the Crosslake Community Center.
We are planning the biggest fireworks show ever, so we hope
you will help us by donating funds to the PAL Foundation to
continue this Fourth of July tradition.
