Your New, Fast and Easy Online Application Center How Strong Is Your Computer Password? Computer passwords are the most common way to prove your identity when using electronic devices. Therefore, the use of strong passwords is essential in order to protect your security and identity. Here are a few tips to improve and protect your passwords: * C reate a password with at least eight characters – the longer your password, the harder it is for criminals to guess or break. * D o not use numerical sequences as part of your password. * Change your password often. * D o not use your name or birthdate as part of your password. * C reate a password using characters from each of the following categories: Character Category Examples Uppercase Letters A, B, C Lowercase Letters a, b, c Numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Symbols found on the keyboard and spaces‘ ~ ! @ $ % ^ & * ( ) _ +={}[]\/|:;“< >,.? For example, I love to play chess could become ILuv2PlayCh3$$. Passwords provide the first line of defense against unauthorized access to your computer. If your username and password falls into the wrong hands, someone can fraudulently sign your name to an online service agreement, engage in online transactions, change your account information, etc. Don’t compromise your identity. Keep your identity safe by keeping your passwords strong. APCU VISA EMV Cards Are Coming Have you heard about EMV chip cards? EMV chip cards are credit cards and debit cards that have computer chips in them. These cards look similar to the cards you currently carry, but they are embedded with a small, metallic square microchip. Why Chip Cards? The magnetic strip on the back of your credit and debit cards contain “static” data, or payment data that does not change. Some of the data stored in the magnetic strips includes your card account number, expiration date, and security code. Using a chip card, each purchase or transaction you make generates unique and dynamic data that is encoded in a safe mode. This protects against the creation of counterfeit cards because dynamic data is only good for a single purchase or use. $WODQWD3RVWDO&UHGLW8 QLRQ Will This Change How I Pay For Things? Not all merchants have an EMV chip reader machine. At those merchants who do have an EMV chip reader, instead of swiping your card, you will simply insert it into the card reader. At merchants who do not have a EMV chip reader machine you will simply swipe your card as you have in the past. Detailed instructions will be provided to you when your new chip card is reissued. When Will I Receive An APCU EMV Chip Card? You will receive a new APCU EMV VISA Credit Card and/or Debit Card when your current card expires. There is no specific action you need to take in order to receive a chip-enabled card. Please contact an APCU Card Services Representative at (800) 849-8431 should you have any questions regarding our new VISA EMV Platinum Credit Card or VISA Debit Card. Pin-less Debit Transactions Have you noticed that sometimes when you use your APCU Debit Card that you don’t have to input your Personal Identification Number (PIN)? As a result of recent regulatory changes, some merchants are opting to switch to a “PIN-less debit” system. With this new system, card transactions are processed without using a PIN. PIN-less debit transactions are limited to purchases under $50.00. This is why when you go to a fast food restaurant and/or convenience store, more often than not, your transaction is run through as a PIN-less debit. Some big box retailers like Target and Walmart have also begun to process small transactions as PIN-less debit. The choice to use a PIN-less debit is made for you by merchant. Processing the transaction this way not only speeds up the check-out process, but it also saves the merchant money on processing fees. Rest assured that if your APCU Debit Card transaction under $50.00 is processed as a PIN-less debit, you are still protected by VISA’s Zero Liability policy. VISA’s Liability policy states that you won’t be held responsible for unauthorized charges. Dividends are compounded and credited to your account quarterly. Dividends will be computed by applying a periodic rate to the balance in the account for each day of the dividend period.
