November 2015 - Old Dominion Postcard Club
******BIGGEST EVER ****** 38th ANNUAL OLD DOMINION POSTCARD CLUB SHOW Friday, November 13th, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. NEWSLETTER OF THE OLD DOMINION POSTCARD CLUB www.olddominionpcc.com The V irgini a Delt iolo gist Est. 1978 Richmond, Virginia NOVEMBER, 2015 Saturday, November 14th, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. With two full days, there promises to be something for everyone at this Show. From beginner to advanced collector, the vendor population will have everything from 25c boxes of cards to that special elusive postcard rarity. Archival postcard supplies will also be available. Located just off I-95 exit 61B, at CCWA on the Campus of John Tyler Community College, 13101 Jefferson Davis Highway, Chester, VA. (Approx. 12 miles south of Richmond). A donation of $3 is requested, good for both days. Plenty of free parking. Anyone with an interest in history or art is encouraged to attend. ODPCC PRESIDENT’S CORNER With the ODPCC Show fast approaching, I thought it would be good to note a few things about it. Everyone in the Club should take pride in these facts: 1. To my knowledge, this will be our biggestShow ever, with 32 Dealers signed up (see Dealer list). This can be attributed to many factors, including excellent location and site, increased publicity, and member participation. 2. Vendors and collectors alike are very happy with the JTCC location, with easy access off the Interstate, and the facility itself, with plenty of space and great lighting. 3. Publicity has expanded to several “events” prior to the Show. Kay Seidenburg has a Nurse postcard exhibit at the VCU library. That opening was well-attended, and Art made sure everyone knew about the Show. We currently have 15 exhibit boards on dis- 2015 Chester Library Display ODPCC Club Members and Chester Library Staff play at the Chester Public Library, which is attracting a lot of attention. Thanks to all who supplied past Show display boards! And Tim O’Gorman did a book signing at the Antique Village, which was another opportunity to “spread the word.” 4. BARR’s Postcard News did an article based on our press release, which gives us national exposure, in addition to the paid ads I’ve run there. I just heard that the Chester Village News also picked up on our press release and has an article in the latest issue. (villagenewsonline.com/2015/11/04/ biggest-ever-old-dominion-postcard-clubshow) 5. Member participation includes volunteers for various duties during the Show. Harriet (Cookie) Cook says this is the first time she’s EVER had all volunteer slots filled for the front desk prior to “Showtime!” Thanks to all who have been distributing the Show cards to area shops, malls, and friends! Also, I’m confident that members will come through again this year with a fine spread of food for the Thursday evening 7 p.m. “Meet & Greet.” With the record number of vendors, we’ll also need a record amount of food and drink! Dealers are always impressed with our Virginia hospitality. It’s also a great time for Club members to meet the dealers prior to the Show. 6. I’ve heard several members who have never entered an exhibit board say they are preparing one (or more) for this years’ Show. Our Exhibit Board competition is another thing that sets us apart from many other shows. Please make an entry this year, and don’t forget that in addition to the ribbons and other judging prizes, there will be three $50.00 drawings that each of your entries makes you eligible for (limit one cash prize per person). 7. This just in: Cynthia Martin, our “professor judge” from John Tyler CC is “encouraging” her students to attend the Show Friday morning with an assignment to each create a postcard (front and back) and display it at the Show. We will provide a space for that purpose. They’ll be judging their creations, and please give them words of encouragement when you see them there. I also suggested that we could give them a “tour” of the Show, and explain how to look for cards they may be interested in. I remember how intimidating it was for me at my first Show. Anyone interested in helping with that on Friday morning, please let me know. She said it’s a small group (eight), but this is a great opportunity for us to explain our hobby and “recruit” some younger postcard enthusiasts! Everyone I’ve talked to is looking forward to our 38th Annual Show. Let’s make it not only our biggest, but our BEST ever! With your help, it will be! We will have a half page article in Barrs Postcard Magazine and another announcement of our November show. Twenty one were in attendance at our October meeting including visitor Anne Rappe who collects cards from around the world! Rather than a dealer we had a silent auction tonight and a number of boxes of postcards were made available for sale by a handful of our members. MCV continues to display Ann Seidenberg's large card collection and is also available for viewing online with a link at our website. Thanks to all who signed up for the meet and greet Thursday night social and we have complete coverage of the sign in table throughout the show.
