Easter Centennial Celebration of Baptistry Painting and Slimp Family
VOLUME 69 APRIL 13, 2011 No. 7 Small Things Jorge Zayasbazan “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel's hand.” Zechariah 4:10 NLT Zerubbabel led the first group of Jews back to Jerusalem from the Babylonian Captivity and laid the foundation of the Second Temple. These 40,000 Jews were unwelcomed and friendless. They were mocked by the enemies of God who did not believe the Temple would be built. The Bible tells us that God was pleased to see the foundation laid and the work begin. (Zechariah 4:10) Many people marvel at mega churches and big ministries while despising the new and the small. Yet the Bible teaches us that all great things begin small. Not only that, but faithfulness at small things is a prerequisite to bigger things. “His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'” Matthew 25:21 At Baptist Temple we have recently found ourselves in the realm of small beginnings and God is pleased. In the last two years we have started numerous small ministries that are growing larger. This is clearly an example of two biblical principles. First, God is pleased with small beginnings and, second, faithfulness in small things will be rewarded with greater ministry responsibilities. Our clothing ministry has been fruitful enough to support a food distribution and prompt the recovery of the annex as a ministry space. Our fitness ministry began with four people on a Sunday afternoon and grew to a seven day a week ministry. Easter Centennial Celebration of Baptistry Painting and Slimp Family Easter Sunday’s special recognition goes back to Baptist Temple’s beginnings when the Slimp Family and its artistic heritage will be recognized. A. B. Slimp was a charter member of Pegues Memorial Baptist Church (later Baptist Temple) in 1911. His son, Chester A. Slimp Sr., was Sunday School Superintendent from 1921-45, when the total attendance passed the million mark. An “All church Appreciation Day in recognition of the services of Brother Chester A. Slimp, General Superintendent of Sunday School” was observed on Sunday, September 30, 1945. He served not only his church, but numerous civic organizations as well as the San Antonio Baptist Association. His wife, Helen Ferne Slimp, designed two prominent features of the sanctuary – the 30 stained-glass windows and the baptistry painting. The windows were part of the dedication ceremonies of the Sanctuary on February 1, 1942 and the original designs lasted 40 years before they were replaced. Granddaughter Charlotte (Slimp) Mitchell said Helen would even climb onto the scaffolding in her split skirt to help supervise the two-year work-inprogress with the windows. “That was scandalous at the time; ladies just did not do that.” “She was very picky and left nothing to the imagination. She was most prolific, though, as a landscape artist.’’ Her baptistry painting was dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 10, 1955 and is still in use. The painting is executed on imported mural canvas of the highest grade, the size being 90 inches in height and 168 inches in width, so as to provide good perspective when viewed from any angle in the auditorium. The design of the mural depicts rugged and semi-arid country. The river, in blues and greens, lends a refreshing and cool atmosphere as it winds through the distant hills. The trees, shrubbery and rolling terrain are typical of the Holy Land as envisioned by Mrs. Slimp. Centennial Celebration of Sports & Athletic Ministries Good Friday Service April 22 7:00 PM Baptist Temple Chapel Community Ministries Teacher Appreciation Days Education is important. It's important to God and it's important to us. For this reason, Baptist Temple Church has made a habit of expressing our appreciation to teachers for all their countless hours of hard work to educate our children and teenagers. In May we will express our appreciation to teachers of Baptist Temple's Day Care, Highland Park Gifted & Talented Academy, and Highland Park Elementary School. Wed, May 4th, we will provide a pizza lunch and desserts for teachers and staff of Highland Park Elementary School. Wed, May 11th, we will provide desserts for BT Day Care and Highland Park Gifted & Talented Academy. Here are ways you can help us show our appreciation to the teachers and staff of these education centers in our community: One, you can give $5 to pay for a pizza. Two, you can make a dessert. Finally, you can help set-up and serve at these events. You can sign-up to help in any of these ways by contacting Danny Vallejo at 422 5637. We will need plenty of help, so please let Danny know how you can contribute. On Sunday, May 15, as part of our ongoing Centennial celebration, the emphasis will be on Baptist Temple’s sports/athletic ministries. If you have comments you would like to share regarding the impact of BT’s sports programs on your life, please e-mail t h e m t o L ou i s e D u d l e y a t [email protected] by May 1st or you may give your handwritten comments to Linda Grinnell in the church office. Selected comments will be included in the bulletin insert on Sports Sunday. The men were there to receive ministry training and enjoy fellowship with fellow church leaders. The GSS appreciated the $616 that was donated by Baptist Temple Church to help with the cost of meals that week. Eagle Pass Our mission trip to Eagle Pass this summer will be in July again. We will depart Saturday, July 9th and return the evening of July 14th. Opportunities to serve include construction, Backyard Bible Club, and ESL. The sign-up deadline is Sunday, May 29th. See Wesley to sign-up. Centennial Moment: Did you know? Baptist Temple voted to allow TOUCH, a drug rehabilitation program, to use its facilities in October of 1974. TOUCH is an acronym: “Transforming Others Under Christ’s Hand.” Financial Freedom Expo June 11 marks one of the biggest events planned in this centennial year. We are bringing to our community the “Financial Freedom Expo,” which is a cooperation of Baptist Temple Church and 13 or more businesses and ministries. The effort is to provide a venue that links our community with practical information as well as classes and resources in the areas of finance, health, and marriage. The event will last from 8 AM until 3 PM Saturday June 11, it includes breakfast and lunch, and the cost is $7. At this event people will be connected to classes in English or Spanish on personal financial management (Financial Freedom in Seven Weeks Plus), and living debt free. The 7 Pillars of Biblical Stewardship introduction Sunday night was a great success! We had 25 people present as Pat Hail unfolded the action plan for the weeks ahead where we will dive deep into inductive Bible Study on one of the most significant discipleship areas for Christians: God’s ownership or mankind’s ownership. We will be learning about being consciously and totally available to God, recognizing the differences between a Biblical world view and a secular world view, and considering what the footprint of our resources might tell us about what our view is. It is not too late to join in, please let Jonathan know if you would like to be a part of 7 Pillars of Biblical Stewardship. Day Care Audrey Good In April we are learning about: April showers, caterpillars, farm animals... but most of all the children are learning Bible stories. Baptist Temple Day Care will close at 12:30 pm on Friday, April 15 for the Battle of Flowers Parade. If Easter is about the cross, why all the chocolate? Because no matter how broken or hard boiled you are, once you taste the true meaning of the cross, life is a whole lot sweeter! Charter school mascot, Bennie, cut the ribbon at the March 31 ceremony celebrating the opening of Highland Park Gifted & Talented Academy at BTC! Are YOU Ready to Volunteer? The Community Ministries Action Team is looking for volunteers to help with summer camp feeding. We need a minimum of 3 volunteers per meal for breakfast and lunch. 7:45—9:15 AM for breakfast 11:45 AM—1:15 PM for lunch Volunteers will be setting up, serving sack lunches from the S.A. Food Bank, and wiping down tables. You don’t have to volunteer to help with every meal every week. Let us know which days and weeks you are available to help. For more information contact Joe Guinn at 314-1279 or Wesley Craig at 533-7114. Training will be Wed, May 25, 4:30 PM in the Parlor Small Things from page 1 in that ministry is our Christian Karate program that grew from 19 to 70 in less than 6 months. Another growing ministry is our charter school, Highland Park Gifted and Talented Academy. Not only did it spark the renovation of our most neglected building, but it also launched other ministries: after school club, summer day camp, and the karate club. And— Worship is another area where God is blessing us. We currently offer three opportunities for worship: an 8:15 contemporary worship service as well as traditional English and Spanish worship at 11. Our faithfulness in these small ministries will lead to more worship opportunities in the future. We must also be mindful of our summer feeding ministry that grew from a trial for a few weeks to a full summer breakfast and lunch program. It, too, was a catalyst to our summer day camp. This summer we will have three interns—one from Baylor and two from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship via the Baptist University of the Americas. This triple blessing is the result of our faithfulness with one intern last summer. There are a few Baptist Temple ministries that are currently in their beginning stages. Some others are in the dreaming and discussion stage. There are too many ministries to mention. I cannot say which ones are the most important but I know that our faithfulness to the leading of the Holy Spirit in small beginnings will determine the future of our church.
